2. Existing Product This product is similar to the one I am
wanting to create due to several factors one
of which being the setting, the cover photo is
taken Infront of fluorescent lighting, the pink
lighting in the background can be signified to
represent women and the fact that this issue
of vogue is for strong independent women
which is why it is featuring the most well
recognised famous women’s equality media
presence.
Another reason this is similar to the
magazine I am wanting to create is the
fashion Billie Eilish is showing on the
front cover, Balenciaga is a well known
high end fashion brand which is worn
by many upcoming or famous artists
which is usually a sign of wealth and
meaning in the fashion industry.
This eye-level shot which is featured on the front page of the magazine is shot in this
particular way for a reason and that is direct address to the reader, by taking a head on ‘eye-
level’ shot the influencer on the cover is staring back at the audience creating direct address
proving Blumer and Katz uses and gratification theory giving the audience a sense of
belonging and social interaction to talk with one another about the magazine.

My product will share some similar values with this GQ
style magazine featuring one super imposed Robert
Downey Junior, one of which being the focus image of
the magazines front cover. This magazine is built around
men’s fashion and style and with a heading like ‘how to
succeed with style’ it draws the reader in and makes
them read more. This appeals to GQ’s target audience of
men who are wanting to up their fashion game, by
creating sub-headings which intrigue the audience and
bring them in with what they want which is fashion and
fame.
The fonts used on the headings is very cursive and
stereotypically unmasculine but due to it being a fashion
magazine we can see GQ want it to be seen as smart and
professional like the style they are wanting Robert to
portray to their readers.
By shooting the centre image as a medium shot we get to see Robert Downey Jr from an
angle most people are not familiar with as he almost looks like he is right infront of you
making the reader want to explore the magazine more as a famous celebrity is creating
direct address.
4. Existing Product
Grind magazine has chosen to make Tyler The Creator
their centre image for this edition of their magazine
using a low angled shot making the reader look up at
Tyler, I will explore angles like this when creating my
magazine as a lot of great publishers will use photos
like this as the centrepiece of the magazines front
cover due to the fact its almost like we, the audience
are looking up towards the celebrity on the front cover
giving the effect of the audience being belongers as
they can conversate over their love of celebrities like
Tyler or others.
The magazines choice of using a more environmental background with a clear blue sky
dictates that they want to portray feelings such as happiness and give effects of the
model in the photo a ‘boyish’ appeal. I will be implicating similar ideas of colour into my
magazine to give the magazine a certain type of mise en scene.
The lighting is bright as the photo was taken outside, this gives connotations of
happiness and full of life due to the fact we are not aloud outside as often lately I will
implement this into my magazine to make it relatable and to keep readers invested.
