Jamie Holland wants to create an art magazine with a fashion magazine layout to attract more readers. The magazine will showcase lesser-known artists and controversial debates. Jamie wants readers to feel involved by thinking deeply about their opinions rather than being passive. The fashion magazine style seems refreshing compared to typical art magazines, which Jamie finds messy and unprofessional. Fashion magazines have a serious status that Jamie wants for the new magazine. A fashion style may attract more readers interested in both art and fashion.
2. Intention
Recently I have become interested with the topic of art and so a magazine based around art
appealed to me greatly. It is important for me to work on a topic I am interested in as I can fully
invest myself in the topic without it seeming like work. My vision is to have the magazine
showcase lesser known artists and their work, as well as controversial debates within the art
community. I want the reader to feel as if they can be involved by thinking deeply about their
own opinions, instead of being a passive reader.
I want to create a magazine with the layout of a fashion magazine as it seems refreshing from the
usual art magazine layouts- they feel too messy and unprofessional to me. Fashion magazines
hold a somewhat serious status about them and I want my magazine to be taken just as seriously.
Having this design may trick the eye into thinking the magazine is about fashion and will entice a
lot more than my target audience to view the magazine in detail. Fashion is a form of art so
people interested in fashion may also be interested in other forms of art: ones that feature in my
magazine.
4. Vogue DPS
The main article image is the
subject of the article itself: in
this case it is Emma Watson.
The image seems professional
and has been taken
specifically for this article. The
article isn’t about anything
specific in regards to Emma so
the image is just her face as
she is the focus, not
something she’s done or
achieved. The image perfectly
captures what the article is
trying to say.
Tricolour scheme, red, white
and black. It is very formal
and is easy on the eye.
6. Wall Street Journal Cover
Professional photo, somewhat
strange position, helps the cover
to stand out among other
magazines on the shelf
Minimal coverlines; not too much
given away, encourages the
reading of the article
The title of the magazine is the
largest piece of text on the cover.
This establishes the brand so the
customer knows which magazine it
is immediately. It will be the
second thing the reader will notice
after the cover image
8. Existing Product
The artist featured in the
magazine is displayed as
the main cover photo and
will be the subject of the
magazines main article.
Their artwork is also
produced behind them
This magazine is a good
example of what I am
trying to avoid with my
final design. It seems
somewhat clunky and
messy.
9. Main Influence: Paper Magazine
The layout of my magazine’s cover will be heavily
influenced by the layout of Paper Magazine. The design is
very minimal compared to most magazines as it contains
only basic cover lines that don’t necessarily explain a lot
about what the content main article. The only indication of
what to expect inside is the cover image and the main
headline. This is because the main article in the magazine
is usually an interview with a specific person that is
somewhat generalised, instead of it being about a specific
story that has occurred recently with the interviewee.
Paper has the intended professional, minimalistic look I
was searching for in order to allow for my magazine to
have a more serious tone. The cover is still inviting as they
use appealing colours and interesting cover photos and
are not messy or disorganised.
10. Research Analysis
Minimalism plays a big part when it comes to design of most of my
researched products. It brings a polished, professional and modern
element to the magazines, which Is something I would like to bring to
my final idea too.
Another aspect I will include in my own work is coordinating the
colours within the main cover image with the colour scheme of the
entire cover. I feel it to be more appealing and exciting as readers
aren't sure what to expect with every issue.
I will replicate a lack of information when it comes to the cover line
which can be seen from most of my researched products. This is
because my magazine is intended to be something to subscribed to, so
I wont need to include flashy titles or buzzwords in order to attract an
audience as I will already have a dedicated following. Magazines such
as Vogue and Paper operate based on this mentality.
