Devil in the White City Essays
Write an essay discussing the historical insights presented in Erik Larson s Devil in the White City,
being sure to answer the following questions: In what ways does the Chicago World s Fair of 1893
represent the contrasts and conflicts of the Gilded Age? What is the Fair s lasting imprint on American
society culture, what new trends does it signal for the twentieth century?
Although the Chicago World s fair of 1893 only lasted 6 months, I had an enormous impact on the city
of Chicago, its people, and indeed the entire country. Up until that point in its history, the US had done
nothing on the scale of the world s fair, and was regarded as a country of barbarians and cowboys by
much of the world, especially Old Europe. The fair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You also see a callous disregard for human life. But within all of this, Burnham was very progressive
in his approach to his labor force. He realized that the higher the morale of his men, the faster and
better they would build. You also see the introduction of the 8 hour workday, and near the end of the
fair the carpenters received overtime pay and extra pay on holidays. The idea of overtime was
revolutionary at the time. Within the Fair s construction you can better see the progressive labor
movement that was sweeping the world at the time. The fair can be considered a turning point for
American labor. The term gilded means something of little value that is covered by a precious metal,
usually gold, to make it look more valuable. Mark Twain coined the term Gilded Age . It is an
appropriate analogy for a time when the very rich lived in the lap of luxary, and the very poor starved
to death. It was a time when the middle class we have today didn t exist in the numbers that they do
today. The Fair is an appropriate analogy, both physically and metaphorically to the guilded age.
Physically, the fair was designed to look magificant and permanent, and like it had been there for ages.
In reality, it was constructed of a material that looked like real stone, but was really just a plaster mix
that wouldn t last very long. All of the landscaping was done very quickly, in only a few months.

Explain Why The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living
Nicole Wade Course Number: HU 399 6 Assignment: Final Project Due Date: 12/04/2014 Date
Submitted: 12/04/2014 Myth/Narrative I Am Living I enthusiastically embrace the sentiment of
Socrates that, The unexamined life is not worth living. Upon reflection, and asking myself, what
exactly does this mean, I feel as if my life has progressed full circle. I finally understand, to a greater
extent, the meaning and purpose of my life the myth I believe and know I should be living. Through
the course readings, text, and concepts, the authors have inspired me to seek more knowledge. It has
stimulated self introspection, an analysis of my experiences, and a desire to further examine my life. I
am convinced that my inherited narrative is my tradition of faith. My faith gives me purpose, allowing
me to connect to life, as I write my narrative and personally extract the significance of tradition that
measures my completeness, proving that my living is not in vain. Since my youth, I have been on a
quest to find my place in this world curious and questioning always, the reason and meaning of my

Introduction
Atlantic Computer is a leading developer company of High Tech Servers; it has recently started
manufacturing Basic servers and now company is looking to decide the pricing of the servers based on
the four models given in the case i.e status Quo pricing, competition based pricing, cost plus pricing
and then there is value in pricing.
Situation analysis
For this situation, Atlantic Computer is a producer of servers and technology products.
Two business sections exist in the server business: High Performance Servers and Basic Servers.
Atlantic Computers has held a 20% offer of the High Performance market with their Radia servers
being their head item. Then again, the business sector for Basic servers is developing and this has
brought about Atlantic Computers to create and present a Basic Server called the Tronn and software
called the Performance Enhancing Server Accelerator (PESA). The Tronn was created basically for the
developing US business market open door for basic servers. The PESA would permit the Tronn to
perform up to four times quicker than its standard speed and make regularly asked for data more
available. Along these lines, packaging the Tronn and PESA appeared well and good. Atlantic is not
worried that the Tronn will be viewed as a substitute for its High Performance servers. They are
looking to decide a price of the servers to introduce in the market before the trade show.

How Did The Witch Trial Happen Before The English Civil War
Gaskill, reported that at his time King James I would also review trials and in some cases he
discovered that some trials occurred because of false accusations. Before the Civil War, the trials of
accused witches were more or less a fair trial, however, do to the political vacuum caused by King
Charles I s reign and the civil war, the format of the witch trials would also change once again.
After the start of the English Civil War, one can see a change in the actual witch trials themselves. The
English Civil War brought chaos to more people than the religious tensions between Catholics and
Protestants. Court systems suffered at this time as well. Any of the progressive movements in the court
systems during the witch hunts in Early Modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In these trials the corruption of the courts is evident. In summary of the trials the townspeople of
Manningtree accused Elizabeth Clark for witchcraft, which she in turn accused other female members
of the community. Anna West and her daughter were two of the other the thirty four people accused of
meeting with Elizabeth Clark. This trail can be considered corrupt because of the processes of the trial.
Elizabeth Clark and the others we accused by their fellow townspeople, whom then were handed of
over to Hopkins and his associate John Stearne. The two men and what Gaskill labels as search
women testified against the accused women in the court of a puritan earl of Warwick because at this
point in history, Essex County, England did not have a judge. This shows that corruption that war
brought to the court system because of war. Court systems were no longer run by a judge with a jury
but by the local noble, whose religion most likely influenced his ruling. It is important to remember
that Hopkins was also a Puritan and could have been searching for people to oversee his trials who

The Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway
The United States faced the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean during World War II in what was later
known as some of the most gruesome battles in either country s history. The Pacific theatre of World
War II consisted of a series of bloody conflicts in which the United States responded to early Japanese
victories with an offensive campaign that won a decisive victory for the Allies. Although many
significant battles were fought in the Pacific, the most important battle was the Battle of Midway,
because it was a decisive victory for the Allies that changed the course of the war completely.
The United States officially joined World War II on December 8, 1941, the day after the devastating
attack on Pearl Harbor and the loss of more than 2,000 lives. However, American forces were already
on the defensive as the Japanese military pushed British Borneo, Hong Kong, Guam, and the
Philippines. The battle that occurred at Luzon was a devastating defeat, resulting 76,000 American
soldiers surrendering to Japanese forces. These men were forced to march from Bataan, a long and
terrible journey in which thousands of men were killed by Japanese soldiers, malnutrition, and
diseases such as malaria. Losing the Philippines was disastrous; the Bataan death march and the defeat
of General MacArthur seriously damaged the morale of the American people. The islands of the
Philippines itself were also a major loss to the United States as their location had provided for a

Summary Of The Call Of Cthulhu
In the short story, The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Love Craft, Cthulhu is described multiple times
throughout the story a giant, otherworldly, unimaginable monster with ancient origins. What if
Cthulhu is more than a giant evil monstrosity but is a representation of madness itself, and like the
narrator, the reader is doomed to a fate of madness and there s nothing we can do about it. The story is
split into three chapters that introduces us to Thurston and Angell who learned of Cthulhu and starts
researching about it, then in chapter two it gives us more detail about the fanatic cult and then in the
third chapter, we learn a horrible truth behind the monster and the cult. The story shows how anyone
who knows or anyone who even conceives the idea of Cthulhu becomes crazy or even dies. This fate
has happened to the great uncle Angell, the narrator Thurston, and even possibly us as the reader.
In chapter one, we re introduced to Thurston and we discover his great uncle, Angell, died from
mysterious circumstances and left several journals behind. Angell was a professor of Semitic
Languages at Brown University in Rhode Island. He was studying a strange statue of an otherworldly
creature on a pedestal with some hieroglyphics. Thurston describes it by saying My somewhat
extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human
caricature.... A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings .

The Relevance Of Justice In Plato s Republic
In Plato s Republic, Socrates engages in a dialogue to defend justice as a worthy virtue. His
conversation partners challenge him to legitimize a concept that is seemingly burdensome on those
who abide by it and is, at best, an inconsistent attempt at fairness for those it is meant to serve. In
Book I, Cephalus, Polemarchus, and Thrasymachus put forth flawed definitions of justice that range
from limited to cynical and self serving. Socrates is able to refute their ill conceived perceptions of
righteousness and, in doing so, present a doctrine that leads to the benefit of those who adhere to it and
society at large. The central aim of said doctrine, education for the sake of knowing goodness, is
neglected by Socrates companions, yet is vital for ensuring a justice that is desirable for both its
consequences and its very essence. Cephalus, the first to offer a definition, posits that justice is giving
what is owed and conducting oneself with honesty. This appears to be a commonplace yet strong
image of justice, ingratiated within man s consciousness as the ancient system of reward and
retribution. Socrates, however, is quick in finding its limitations. He puts forth the scenario of one who
is in possession of a crazed man s weapon. Giving the man his property would be a just action
according to this definition; however, he may go on to harm others with it (331c). Justice, they agree,
could not result in this outcome. The only situation in which this definition would be viable is one
where every person has both full knowledge of the good and is aware of all consequences that could
arise from any action; circumstances such as these are clearly impossible given human limitations. A
parallel can be drawn between Socrates refutation and elements of modern societies: for example,
those who are deemed a threat to themselves or others due to their mental state can be involuntarily
committed to a controlled environment for a set amount of time. This lends credence to Socrates idea
of justice in that his words, recorded over two thousand years ago, bear great relevance in societies far
larger and more complex than his own. Cephalus, seeing that his definition is lacking, excuses himself
from the dialogue.

My Purpose Of School
At some point in our lives we have all asked the question What is the purpose of school? Why must I
learn this? . Some say school is simply preparation for employment and for the rest of our lives. I
enjoy school; however, I have always found it to be rather difficult and pointless being in the French
immersion stream and this was due to the lack of help I received from my mother and father unlike
many of my peers whose parents attended university and spoke both English and French fluently.
Everyone faces a variety of challenges and I have always tried my hardest to do my best and
overcome any challenges I face in order to succeed as well as make myself and my parents proud. In
elementary school, I discovered my weakness for French. It was the subject I abhorred; reading,
spelling and grammar were concepts I could not grasp. As a result of my academic struggles, I would
often become frustrated and cry. Perhaps what had stained my academic experience the most was in
sixth grade, our teacher invented a game called Autour du monde A game where we would go around
the class answering grammar questions that were given to us with the objective of improving our
French. I waited in vain for my turn to be over, only then to be made fun of by my teacher and peers
when I couldn t conjugate a verb in passé compose. It was humiliating that my teacher who was
supposed to support and inspire me to do my best, was instead putting me down in front of all my
peers. My parents had

Ebola Virus Disease ( Evd )
Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. EVD outbreaks have a case
fatality rate of up to 90%. Ebola first appeared on July 27, 1976, the very first person to contract the
Ebola virus began to show symptoms. Ten days later he was dead. The latter was in a village situated
near the Ebola River, from which the disease takes its name., with a total of 602 reported cases and
431 deaths. The first victim to contract Ebola was a cotton factory worker from Nzara, Sudan. Soon
after this first man came down with symptoms, so did his co worker. Then the co worker s wife
became sick. The outbreak quickly spread to the Sudanese town of Maridi, where there was a hospital.
Since no one in the medical field had ever seen this illness before, it took them awhile to realize that it
was passed by close contact. By the time the outbreak had subsided in the Sudan, 284 people had
become ill, 151 of whom had died.
On September 1, 1976, another, even more deadly, outbreak of Ebola struck this time in Zaire. The
first victim of this outbreak was a 44 year old teacher who had just returned from a tour of northern
Zaire. After suffering from symptoms that seemed like malaria, this first victim went to the Yambuku
Mission Hospital and received a shot of an anti malarial drug. Unfortunately, at that time the hospital
did not use disposable needles nor did they properly sterilize the ones they used. Thus, the Ebola virus
spread through used needles to many of the hospital

The Importance Of Human Physical Strength In The Ancient...
Humans in the ancient world definitely took advantage of their physical strength. Five great examples
of this are: building roads, quarrying, operating cranes, digging wells, and constructing tunnels. All of
these tasks could only be completed with an immense amount of endurance and strength. Anything
from laying rocks to digging out an entire tunnel was a difficult and grueling task. In many cases, a
great deal of human physical strength was required to fully exploit the technologies and technical
practices developed in the ancient world. Building roadways in ancient Italy required an extensive
amount of physical strength. Creating roadways required quarrying, lumbering, and drainage (Oleson).
The workers initially began by placing curb stones to create the defined border of the road (Oleson).
Ditches were dug on the outside of both rows of curb stones for storm drainage (Oleson). The land
between the curb stones was then completely removed by a large amount of digging and cutting
(Oleson). The excavated ditch was then filled with stones, sand, and other materials that were dug up
from the ditches or the land around the road, forming a solid foundation (Oleson). Laying down
gravel, carrying the stones, transporting them, and carefully placing them down required a great deal
of upper and lower body strength. On top of the layer of stones and sand was a layer of finer gravel
(Oleson). The top layer of the road was made of polygonal basalt blocks that formed a

Social Oppression Of Society In The Doll s House
In a short story by Katherine Mansfield called The Doll s House, there is a social barrier between a
family with less that is struggling to make ends meet and a flourishing family, that appears to not have
any difficulties getting through life. The Kelvey family, whose hard working mother makes the best of
life that she can by crafting clothing from materials she can salvage from the wealthy clients houses
she cleans. The Burnell family, who is getting through life with ease because of their position in the
wealthy class, is the complete opposite in lifestyles. The short story The Doll s House suggests society
is unfair to the people with less and that possessions play a part in the deciding factor whether people
will be your friend, but it only takes one person to break from the social expectations.
Society is unfair to people with less. Having less in life can range from a wide spectrum of things
from age, which Isabel is the oldest out of the three Burnell daughters, all the way to materialistic
valuables like the Burnell s doll s house. The narrator states, Isabel was bossy, but she was always
right, and Lottie and Kezia knew too well the powers that went with being eldest. This was unfair to
Isabel Burnell s two younger siblings because of the remarks that Isabel would say to the younger
siblings, such as I m to tell, said Isabel, because I m the eldest about breaking the news to their fellow

Since she is new to the organization, and she is not part of sales department, she should have taken

She did not mention any incentive program for the field consultant to spend more time with larger

Yes, her proposals to change the call patterns make complete sense. But problem was the way she

Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants By Marc Prensky
Americans are known to reflect on East Asian education systems, then compare those systems to the
education system here in the United States. When doing so, people tend to come to the same general
conclusion: there are intensifying problems within the American education system. Marc Prensky, the
author of Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, argues that the real issue with educating today s youth
is that our education system s design does not accommodate today s students since they are not the
same as the students who molded our education system years and years ago. Today s students are
referred to as digital natives and their educators are referred to as digital immigrants. Delivered

Prensky s strategy of doing just that with his own bold, personal technique is what thrusts his
argument. If he did not utilize syntax in the way that he did, his argument would have come off plain
and uniform. And without his personal diction, the tone of the article would have been dry. Finally,
Prensky s strong metaphor added depth to his argument, while getting the reader to think should we
accommodate them, or should they accommodate us? Using such a prominent metaphor raises the
eyebrows of Digital Immigrants, but also gets them to listen. In sum, Prensky drew predominantly on
pathos with his use of strategic shaming, but also touched on ethos when categorizing himself within
the very group that he shamed, and finally using logos with his overall us or them metaphor. All in all,
without his bold rhetorical strategy, the same message would have been said, but with a less
convincing delivery style, and the argument would not have been as effective. Prensky s additions are
what pushed his argument right where it needed to be in order to give it the best chance of convincing
the educators of older generations to accommodate the learning needs of the students of newer

Lab Report Potato Osmosis
Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to observe the various osmosity rates of different vegetables and the
relationship of the surface area to volume ratio and rate of diffusion. In activity 1, we hypothesize that
the agar cubes with higher surface area to volume ratio have higher rate of diffusion. Reversely, the
agar cubes with lower surface area to volume ratio have lower rate of diffusion. In the activity 2, we
hypothesize the potato has higher osmosity rate than carrot.
Introduction
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower
concentration. Osmosis is a special kind of diffusion that describes the movement of water molecules
seperated by a selectively permeable membrane. Cells, which ... Show more content on

Then, they placed three cubes placed in a plastic cup and added white vinegar until the cubes were
submerged. After 10 minutes, the experimenters took out the agar cubes by using plastic spoons and
placed them on a dry paper towel. In order to get accurate measures of diffusion, the experimenters
used the knife to cut the cubes in half and used the metric ruler to measure the distance from the edge
of the cube to the edge of pink area. Then, the experimenters culculated and record the rate of
diffusion for each cube. At the end, they culculated and record the volume of the pink portion of each
cube.
In activity 2, the experimenters first cut potatos and carrots into similar pieces. Then they weighed
each core and measured the length of each core. Next, they put one carrot core and one potato core in
each of the mystery sucrose solutions. After 30 minutes, the experimenters re weighted the carrot and
potato cores. Then, they culculated the change in mass and percentage change in mass of each core.
Results
Activity 1:
The data and culculate results in table 1 show that the largest cube has lowest surface area to volume
ratio. The smallest cube has highest surface area to volume ratio. The table 2 indicates that the relation
of surface area to volume ratio with depth of diffusion and rate of diffusion. The table 3 indicates that

Factors Caused By Recreational Scuba Diving And Snorkeling...
Globally, marine ecosystems, in particular, coral reefs, are experiencing increasing pressure due to the
growth in recreational scuba diving, and snorkeling. Pressure refers to the frequency, and quantity of
divers, and dive boats on any particular reef. This pressure often results in damage to the reef, and is
caused by divers, snorkelers, and even dive boat anchors, and anchor lines, furthermore, this damage
takes significant time to repair, due to the rate at which coral grows, and repairs itself. Although this
damage is not irreparable, continual pressure by recreational dive and snorkeling industries, can lead
to damage beyond the reef s ability to recover. Damaged reefs result in loss of sea life, vibrancy, and
color, the primary draw for divers, snorkelers, and other marine enthusiasts. Consequently, this
damage extends to the economies of the local communities, in which water related activities are a
primary source of revenue. To sustain these local communities economies, and tourist enjoyment,
private SCUBA organizations can coordinate, and facilitate options to reduce the recreational damage
of the ocean s reef system through education, artificial reef attractions, and alternative dive programs.
SCUBA diving is a growing, and global recreational sport, with one certification agency, PADI,
claiming an annual average of 900,000 new diver certifications globally . Of course, not all of these
new divers will continue on to become frequent, or repeat divers, however,

Similarities Between College And University
The terms college and university originally had very similar meanings. Only with the passing of
centuries did university come to signify an educational institution composed of more than one college.
The word college means literally union formed by law, or a group of people associated in some
common function. The ancient Roman craft guilds were called collegia. The closest parallel today is
the corporation, a business organization chartered by a government.
 During the Middle Ages students at the universities of Paris, Oxford, and Cambridge found it
convenient to rent houses and share expenses instead of living in private apartments. By the 13th
century these houses of scholars were becoming legally recognized corporate institutions. ... Show

When used in its modern sense as a place for advanced learning, it usually required the addition of
other words such as masters and scholars. The term that was normally used to describe a legally
chartered school of teachers and students was studium generale, meaning a place of study open to
students from all parts. The universitas was a group of teachers or students (or perhaps both) within
the studium. A studium was quite similar to a guild in both origin and composition. The beginners
were essentially apprentices, called bachelors, while the teachers were the masters.
 The studium probably emerged when the bishop of a diocese gave a teacher permission to operate a
school other than the local cathedral or monastery school. It is likely that a license to teach was
granted to a master after a formal examination. The studium itself became a school that granted a
teaching license to its scholars after they completed a prescribed course of study and passed

Compare the relationships between Mr and Miss Bingley, Mr...
Compare the relationships between Mr and Miss Bingley, Mr and Miss
Darcy and any two of the Bennett sisters, exploring the use Austen makes of sibling relationships in
the novel.
The core theme in Pride and Prejudice is the relationships between
[MSOffice1] siblings. Austen had a large family and many siblings with whom she was close but with
her sister Cassandra, was she especially so. These reflect the sibling relationships that, in my opinion,
are central to the novel. Each character has more than one sibling relationship, whether related through
blood, through growing up together or in the sense of a close friendship. For example, Darcy has more

Jane and Lizzy are very close to each other and this intimate relationship is lacking within the other
three girls. Kitty and Lydia are close in that they stay with each other and share the same views and
interests, for example the officers and regiment. Lydia is the most independent of all the sisters and I
believe that if she were to have a more intimate relationship with one or all of her sisters, similar to
that of Jane and Lizzy s, she would not have brought such shame on them. This is because she would
have had the advice and care of the other girls and at the least would have confided in them.

Non-Ruminant Animal Digestive System Differences
Non Ruminant and Ruminant Animals Digestive System Differences
Non Ruminant
Non ruminant animals are just like humans, they digest their food just the once if they are able to
digest it and it is good food and the one stomach works on it.
The non ruminant digestive system works so that our stomach churns the food so it is into tiny little
pieces, and makes sure that the food we eat is fully digested and the stomach muscles contract in order
to churn food. The small intestine then absorbs and digests 90% of the food we eat and then absorbs
minerals and nutrients, the large intestine then absorbs water from the remaining indigested food and
transports waste material from our bodies, the rectum then temporarily stores our faeces until it is full
and then faeces excrete from our anuses.

Childhood Asthma And Its Relations
Childhood Asthma and its Relations to Traffic Related Air Pollutants
2. Introduction (300 word to 350 words) 359
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that is not to be underestimated; it affects approximately
12.1% of children in the United States (English et al. 2006). Asthma is particularly concerning and
threatening to children for multiple reasons, one being the anatomy of children. Asthma has no cure
however there are some ways to treat asthma. If gone untreated, asthma could be deadly. Many causes
of asthma cannot be exterminated however they can be reduced. Air pollution, being one of them, is
something that many people may consider to be unavoidable, but in reality it is an unfortunate result
of a luxury that the majority of the population consider a necessity.
Asthma causes inflammation of the airways and the bronchi of the lungs. This in turn causes a
decrease in oxygen uptake leading to the common asthma symptoms of shortness of breath, coughing
and wheezing, and chest pain (Erzurum et al. 2006). In severe cases, if the airways haven t gone back
to normal, lips can become blue due to lack of oxygen. If this occurs, it is imperative to seek
immediate medical attention. The anatomy of children is different than adults in that practically
everything is smaller. The main anatomical differences that have to do with asthma are that children
have smaller and shorter airways, a larger tongue, a longer and floppier epiglottis, and a funnel shaped
trachea. All of

Analysis Of The Film Delicatessen

This is the author account of the film Delicatessen. This is a post apocalyptic film set in France. Meat

cannibalism to people living under the ground.
1.1 Methodology
The author was giving the film Delicatessen and told to deconstruct the film and give the author s
opinion on this strange film. The author watched the film a few times and read reviews online to learn
about the director and main actors and actress that starred in Delicatessen.
2.1 Food is Currency
There is no money in this post apocalyptic film so meat, corn, lentils and even sex is used to pay for
food. The people are using the barter system to trade by exchange of commodities rather than money.
Food was more important than money, you need to eat to survive, and meat is the top commodity. The
Kube brothers exchanged 2 bags of corn for nine hundred grams of shoulder meat. And when they
argue this Clapet told the brothers you get what you always get. Lentils were seen as nothing as the
taximan would not take lentils from Louison for his fair, instead he took his shoes, even though taxi
broke down before and Louison had pushed the car for miles.

Communication In Norma Rae At The Textile Mill
The use of machines has radically transformed the nature of productive activity and has left its mark
on the imagination, thoughts, and feelings of humans throughout the ages. An organization as a
machine is the first theoretical metaphor that believes that organizations operate as fully functioning
machines. According to Morgan, an organization taking the mechanistic approach would be clearly
defined as ...a pattern of precisely defined jobs organized in a hierarchical manner through precisely
defined lines of command or communication. Essentially, the mechanistic approach is all about
maximizing efficiency and maintaining control. The concept that organizations can run like machines
is one that is most easily identified with the factory work that is shown in Norma Rae. This metaphor
describes communication in organizations as having three factors: instrumentality, hierarchy, and
codification. While codification isn t really shown, instrumentality and hierarchy are eminent

The Pros And Cons Of Stadium Subsidy
Sports subsidies have become the main way to finance a lot of the stadiums being built all
around the United States. A stadium subsidy is a sort of government subsidy provided for a
professional sports team to help invest in the building or improvement of sports stadiums. Even
though these subsidies are occurring that does not mean that they are good. As a matter of fact
they do more harm than good to the economy of the area the stadium is built in. This situation
brings in taxes, business collapse, and really no solid evidence after research has been done on
the economic boost of these stadium subsides. The government should be shut down from giving
out subsidies to sports franchises for the construction of the new stadiums because of all the
harm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the area by the stadium may flourish other parts of
the city could be kicked out of business. Also no matter if the sports franchise is a winning
franchise, the more distance the sports stadium is from the main part of town, there is more of a
chance of economic collapse (Jacobson 25). It is very hard to have a flourishing city all around if
one side of town is getting the majority of business. If a city plans to have a better economy,
building a new sports stadium is not the way to go. Most of the time the stadiums do not work
out economically. That does not mean that stadiums can not work out in a city but just that the
fact that the city will not become rich off of this introduction of a stadium (Jacobson 23). There
are a lot of sports cities that struggle because of new stadiums coming into their community and
a lot of businesses that have gone out of business because of this. The government should stop
giving out this free money to big money franchises.
Lastly there have been studies all over to test and see the value or nonvalue of

Arguments Against The Drug War
Each day it seems America slips further away from the true meaning of individual liberty. I m sure you
have been raised to think that you grew up in the land of the free, but I question what the true
definition of freedom is. Now don t get me wrong, I agree that other countries may not have as much
freedom as we do in America but that s not my argument. The problem is that The land of the free isn t
so free anymore. It seems we go against the constitution more often every year. The drug war is a
great example of us loosening our grips on the constitution because of the precise fact that it takes
away individual liberty. Using drugs is most certainly not anything I would advise, but if it was my
choice to make for you then you wouldn t truly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believe that law enforcement using their powers is making America more drug free. The facts
prove this to be incorrect though, because it is doing everything except for what it was created to do.
Since the day that the drug war began drug use has expanded steadily, which is the complete opposite
of its purpose. What people fail to realize is that others will use drugs regardless of if it is legal or not.
During the 1920 s the alcohol prohibition brought similar outcomes as the drug war is. It s causing
violence, lawlessness, gangs, brutality and corruption. The reasoning for the violence was not that
selling or making alcohol was unsafe, but was ultimately caused by the brutal black market, which
sent profits through the roof. As Congressmen Ron Paul once stated The only beneficiaries are the
drug barons, smugglers and dealers who enjoy exorbitant profits, and those dark forces in government
who try to further suppress our freedoms under the excuse of fighting the war against drugs. Pablo
Escobar s son stated that the United States Government used to work with Pablo. They worked with
him by smuggling more drugs into America and buying or selling drugs to and from Pablo himself.
That is just one man s word but there have been multiple times when the CIA has been called out in
making or selling cocaine. If the drug war were working there wouldn t be a large amount of people
using drugs and there wouldn t be people committing crimes to get the drugs, because if it were
working then the country would be drug free. I iterate that people still use drugs and the drug war has
done nothing but create violence, send people to jail and ruin opportunities for the person. According
to Mona Chalabi, in a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2013 found that despite efforts
to limit the supply of drugs, since the

The Design Philosophy of Ruby Ross Wood
The Design Philosophy of Ruby Ross Wood D Aja Anderson Professor Jennifer Hopkins Tidewater
Community College SDV 101 17 December 15, 2012 This paper expounds on the life and design style
of Ruby Ross Wood. Her abstract life was during the cookie cutter times of the 1900 s. During these
times the everyday woman went from being a homemaker to earning wages and being a prominent
member of society. It was an excellent time in history when the women of the world stood on the
threshold of greatness. The world desperately needed an eccentric, intelligent, and strong female
designer in the public eye who would forever change the way we look at design and what is beautiful.
Being a descendent of several families prominent in America ... Show more content on

According to Baldwin, Wood s professional credo was: The final judgment in decorating is not the
logic of the mind, but the logic of the eye. (Wikipedia contributors). Mrs. Wood embraced many
different cultural designs, and preferred to design with old world intent rather than embrace modern
design. Her Death and Legacy Ruby Ross Wood died 1950 of lung cancer. She was described by many
as eccentric, but was best described by Mitchell Owens who wrote: Ruby Ross Wood was an anomaly
when compared with the other prominent decorators of her day. She was not a charter member of the
international social set, like Elsie de Wolfe. She was not a beautiful society divorcée, like Dorothy
Draper. And she most decidedly was not a glamorous kept woman, like Rose Cumming. Instead, Ruby
Ross Wood chain smoking, impatient, tart tongued was what used to be called a working girl. Ruby
Wood did not start her career with the intention to become a world famous interior designer, but she
did become one. She was different in many ways from the interior decorators of her time, but from the
looks of things that is what made her work so exciting and vibrant. She is also a great example of
realizing and pursing your dreams. She found her passion in life and followed through to the end, and
even when she failed she kept going. When thinking of Ruby Ross Wood you should not only admire
her design

Devil in the White City Essays Write an essay discussing the historical insights presented in Erik Larson s Devil in the White City, being sure to answer the following questions: In what ways does the Chicago World s Fair of 1893 represent the contrasts and conflicts of the Gilded Age? What is the Fair s lasting imprint on American society culture, what new trends does it signal for the twentieth century? Although the Chicago World s fair of 1893 only lasted 6 months, I had an enormous impact on the city of Chicago, its people, and indeed the entire country. Up until that point in its history, the US had done nothing on the scale of the world s fair, and was regarded as a country of barbarians and cowboys by much of the world, especially Old Europe. He realized that the higher the morale of his men, the faster and better they would build. Within the Fair s construction you can better see the progressive labor movement that was sweeping the world at the time. The fair can be considered a turning point for American labor. The term gilded means something of little value that is covered by a precious metal, usually gold, to make it look more valuable. Mark Twain coined the term Gilded Age . It is an appropriate analogy for a time when the very rich lived in the lap of luxary, and the very poor starved to death. It was a time when the middle class we have today didn t exist in the numbers that they do today. The Fair is an appropriate analogy, both physically and metaphorically to the guilded age. Physically, the fair was designed to look magificant and permanent, and like it had been there for ages. • 11. The Battle of Midway The Battle of Midway The United States faced the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean during World War II in what was later known as some of the most gruesome battles in either country s history. The Pacific theatre of World War II consisted of a series of bloody conflicts in which the United States responded to early Japanese victories with an offensive campaign that won a decisive victory for the Allies. Although many significant battles were fought in the Pacific, the most important battle was the Battle of Midway, because it was a decisive victory for the Allies that changed the course of the war completely. The United States officially joined World War II on December 8, 1941, the day after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor and the loss of more than 2,000 lives. However, American forces were already on the defensive as the Japanese military pushed British Borneo, Hong Kong, Guam, and the Philippines. The battle that occurred at Luzon was a devastating defeat, resulting 76,000 American soldiers surrendering to Japanese forces. These men were forced to march from Bataan, a long and terrible journey in which thousands of men were killed by Japanese soldiers, malnutrition, and diseases such as malaria. Losing the Philippines was disastrous; the Bataan death march and the defeat of General MacArthur seriously damaged the morale of the American people. • 14. The Relevance Of Justice In Plato s Republic In Plato s Republic, Socrates engages in a dialogue to defend justice as a worthy virtue. His conversation partners challenge him to legitimize a concept that is seemingly burdensome on those who abide by it and is, at best, an inconsistent attempt at fairness for those it is meant to serve. In Book I, Cephalus, Polemarchus, and Thrasymachus put forth flawed definitions of justice that range from limited to cynical and self serving. Socrates is able to refute their ill conceived perceptions of righteousness and, in doing so, present a doctrine that leads to the benefit of those who adhere to it and society at large. The central aim of said doctrine, education for the sake of knowing goodness, is neglected by Socrates companions, yet is vital for ensuring a justice that is desirable for both its consequences and its very essence. Cephalus, the first to offer a definition, posits that justice is giving what is owed and conducting oneself with honesty. This appears to be a commonplace yet strong image of justice, ingratiated within man s consciousness as the ancient system of reward and retribution. Socrates, however, is quick in finding its limitations. He puts forth the scenario of one who is in possession of a crazed man s weapon. Giving the man his property would be a just action according to this definition; however, he may go on to harm others with it (331c). Justice, they agree, could not result in this outcome. The only situation in which this definition would be viable is one where every person has both full knowledge of the good and is aware of all consequences that could arise from any action; circumstances such as these are clearly impossible given human limitations. A parallel can be drawn between Socrates refutation and elements of modern societies: for example, those who are deemed a threat to themselves or others due to their mental state can be involuntarily committed to a controlled environment for a set amount of time. This lends credence to Socrates idea of justice in that his words, recorded over two thousand years ago, bear great relevance in societies far larger and more complex than his own. Cephalus, seeing that his definition is lacking, excuses himself from the dialogue. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some say school is simply preparation for employment and for the rest of our lives. I enjoy school; however, I have always found it to be rather difficult and pointless being in the French immersion stream and this was due to the lack of help I received from my mother and father unlike many of my peers whose parents attended university and spoke both English and French fluently. Everyone faces a variety of challenges and I have always tried my hardest to do my best and overcome any challenges I face in order to succeed as well as make myself and my parents proud. In elementary school, I discovered my weakness for French. It was the subject I abhorred; reading, spelling and grammar were concepts I could not grasp. As a result of my academic struggles, I would often become frustrated and cry. Perhaps what had stained my academic experience the most was in sixth grade, our teacher invented a game called Autour du monde A game where we would go around the class answering grammar questions that were given to us with the objective of improving our French. I waited in vain for my turn to be over, only then to be made fun of by my teacher and peers when I couldn t conjugate a verb in passé compose. Ebola first appeared on July 27, 1976, the very first person to contract the Ebola virus began to show symptoms. Ten days later he was dead. The latter was in a village situated near the Ebola River, from which the disease takes its name., with a total of 602 reported cases and 431 deaths. The first victim to contract Ebola was a cotton factory worker from Nzara, Sudan. Soon after this first man came down with symptoms, so did his co worker. Then the co worker s wife became sick. The outbreak quickly spread to the Sudanese town of Maridi, where there was a hospital. Since no one in the medical field had ever seen this illness before, it took them awhile to realize that it was passed by close contact. By the time the outbreak had subsided in the Sudan, 284 people had become ill, 151 of whom had died. On September 1, 1976, another, even more deadly, outbreak of Ebola struck this time in Zaire. The first victim of this outbreak was a 44 year old teacher who had just returned from a tour of northern Zaire. After suffering from symptoms that seemed like malaria, this first victim went to the Yambuku Mission Hospital and received a shot of an anti malarial drug. Unfortunately, at that time the hospital did not use disposable needles nor did they properly sterilize the ones they used. • 18. The Importance Of Human Physical Strength In The Ancient... Humans in the ancient world definitely took advantage of their physical strength. Five great examples of this are: building roads, quarrying, operating cranes, digging wells, and constructing tunnels. All of these tasks could only be completed with an immense amount of endurance and strength. Anything from laying rocks to digging out an entire tunnel was a difficult and grueling task. In many cases, a great deal of human physical strength was required to fully exploit the technologies and technical practices developed in the ancient world. Building roadways in ancient Italy required an extensive amount of physical strength. Creating roadways required quarrying, lumbering, and drainage (Oleson). The workers initially began by placing curb stones to create the defined border of the road (Oleson). Ditches were dug on the outside of both rows of curb stones for storm drainage (Oleson). The land between the curb stones was then completely removed by a large amount of digging and cutting (Oleson). The excavated ditch was then filled with stones, sand, and other materials that were dug up from the ditches or the land around the road, forming a solid foundation (Oleson). Laying down gravel, carrying the stones, transporting them, and carefully placing them down required a great deal of upper and lower body strength. On top of the layer of stones and sand was a layer of finer gravel (Oleson). The top layer of the road was made of polygonal basalt blocks that formed a Chambers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social Oppression Of Society In The Doll s House In a short story by Katherine Mansfield called The Doll s House, there is a social barrier between a family with less that is struggling to make ends meet and a flourishing family, that appears to not have any difficulties getting through life. The Kelvey family, whose hard working mother makes the best of life that she can by crafting clothing from materials she can salvage from the wealthy clients houses she cleans. The Burnell family, who is getting through life with ease because of their position in the wealthy class, is the complete opposite in lifestyles. The short story The Doll s House suggests society is unfair to the people with less and that possessions play a part in the deciding factor whether people will be your friend, but it only takes one person to break from the social expectations. Society is unfair to people with less. Having less in life can range from a wide spectrum of things from age, which Isabel is the oldest out of the three Burnell daughters, all the way to materialistic valuables like the Burnell s doll s house. Double Indemnity Essay In Double Indemnity , to depict the characteristics of the femme fatale named Dietrichson in different plots, the combination of various representational ways is necessary. Hanson Helen and O Rawe Catherine analyze many plots of this movie and list them in their book named The Femme Fatale: Images, Histories, Contexts . Take one representational method as an example, In this plot which shows the conversation between Dietrichson and Neff, audiences just can hear Dietrichson s voices and all of her gestures and facial expressions are hidden by the shadow, at the same time, Walter appearance can be seen clearly (Hanson Helen, O Rawe Catherine). This innovative way is used to highlight their different standpoints, in fact, the movie shows Dietrichson always manipulates the progress of the crime and controls Neff s affection for her plan. In another words, Walter is in the light, meanwhile, Dietrichson is in darkness. Additionally, This movie uses this method for transforming the threat into a secret to foreshadow their tragic results (Hanson Helen, O Rawe Catherine). Double Indemnity does not show the outcome of Neff clearly, although audiences know that he was shot by Dietrichson and the crime he did was known by his colleague. • 23. Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants By Marc Prensky Americans are known to reflect on East Asian education systems, then compare those systems to the education system here in the United States. When doing so, people tend to come to the same general conclusion: there are intensifying problems within the American education system. Marc Prensky, the author of Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, argues that the real issue with educating today s youth is that our education system s design does not accommodate today s students since they are not the same as the students who molded our education system years and years ago. Today s students are referred to as digital natives and their educators are referred to as digital immigrants. Delivered through Prensky s syntax/diction and his overall audacious ... If he did not utilize syntax in the way that he did, his argument would have come off plain and uniform. And without his personal diction, the tone of the article would have been dry. Finally, Prensky s strong metaphor added depth to his argument, while getting the reader to think should we accommodate them, or should they accommodate us? Using such a prominent metaphor raises the eyebrows of Digital Immigrants, but also gets them to listen. In sum, Prensky drew predominantly on pathos with his use of strategic shaming, but also touched on ethos when categorizing himself within the very group that he shamed, and finally using logos with his overall us or them metaphor. All in all, without his bold rhetorical strategy, the same message would have been said, but with a less convincing delivery style, and the argument would not have been as effective. Prensky s additions are what pushed his argument right where it needed to be in order to give it the best chance of convincing the educators of older generations to accommodate the learning needs of the students of newer ... Lab Report Potato Osmosis Purpose The purpose of this lab is to observe the various osmosity rates of different vegetables and the relationship of the surface area to volume ratio and rate of diffusion. In activity 1, we hypothesize that the agar cubes with higher surface area to volume ratio have higher rate of diffusion. Reversely, the agar cubes with lower surface area to volume ratio have lower rate of diffusion. In the activity 2, we hypothesize the potato has higher osmosity rate than carrot. Then, the experimenters culculated and record the rate of diffusion for each cube. At the end, they culculated and record the volume of the pink portion of each cube. In activity 2, the experimenters first cut potatos and carrots into similar pieces. Then they weighed each core and measured the length of each core. Next, they put one carrot core and one potato core in each of the mystery sucrose solutions. After 30 minutes, the experimenters re weighted the carrot and potato cores. • 25. Factors Caused By Recreational Scuba Diving And Snorkeling... Globally, marine ecosystems, in particular, coral reefs, are experiencing increasing pressure due to the growth in recreational scuba diving, and snorkeling. Pressure refers to the frequency, and quantity of divers, and dive boats on any particular reef. This pressure often results in damage to the reef, and is caused by divers, snorkelers, and even dive boat anchors, and anchor lines, furthermore, this damage takes significant time to repair, due to the rate at which coral grows, and repairs itself. Although this damage is not irreparable, continual pressure by recreational dive and snorkeling industries, can lead to damage beyond the reef s ability to recover. Damaged reefs result in loss of sea life, vibrancy, and color, the primary draw for divers, snorkelers, and other marine enthusiasts. Consequently, this damage extends to the economies of the local communities, in which water related activities are a primary source of revenue. To sustain these local communities economies, and tourist enjoyment, private SCUBA organizations can coordinate, and facilitate options to reduce the recreational damage of the ocean s reef system through education, artificial reef attractions, and alternative dive programs. SCUBA diving is a growing, and global recreational sport, with one certification agency, PADI, claiming an annual average of 900,000 new diver certifications globally . The universitas was a group of teachers or students (or perhaps both) within the studium. A studium was quite similar to a guild in both origin and composition. The beginners were essentially apprentices, called bachelors, while the teachers were the masters.  The studium probably emerged when the bishop of a diocese gave a teacher permission to operate a school other than the local cathedral or monastery school. Compare the relationships between Mr and Miss Bingley, Mr and Miss Darcy and any two of the Bennett sisters, exploring the use Austen makes of sibling relationships in the novel. The core theme in Pride and Prejudice is the relationships between [MSOffice1] siblings. Austen had a large family and many siblings with whom she was close but with her sister Cassandra, was she especially so. These reflect the sibling relationships that, in my opinion, are central to the novel. Introduction (300 word to 350 words) 359 Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that is not to be underestimated; it affects approximately 12.1% of children in the United States (English et al. 2006). Asthma is particularly concerning and threatening to children for multiple reasons, one being the anatomy of children. Asthma has no cure however there are some ways to treat asthma. If gone untreated, asthma could be deadly. Many causes of asthma cannot be exterminated however they can be reduced. Air pollution, being one of them, is something that many people may consider to be unavoidable, but in reality it is an unfortunate result of a luxury that the majority of the population consider a necessity. Asthma causes inflammation of the airways and the bronchi of the lungs. This in turn causes a decrease in oxygen uptake leading to the common asthma symptoms of shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing, and chest pain (Erzurum et al. 2006). In severe cases, if the airways haven t gone back to normal, lips can become blue due to lack of oxygen. If this occurs, it is imperative to seek immediate medical attention. The anatomy of children is different than adults in that practically everything is smaller. The main anatomical differences that have to do with asthma are that children have smaller and shorter airways, a larger tongue, a longer and floppier epiglottis, and a funnel shaped trachea. Even though these subsidies are occurring that does not mean that they are good. As a matter of fact they do more harm than good to the economy of the area the stadium is built in. This situation brings in taxes, business collapse, and really no solid evidence after research has been done on the economic boost of these stadium subsides. The government should be shut down from giving out subsidies to sports franchises for the construction of the new stadiums because of all the harm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the area by the stadium may flourish other parts of the city could be kicked out of business. Also no matter if the sports franchise is a winning franchise, the more distance the sports stadium is from the main part of town, there is more of a chance of economic collapse (Jacobson 25). It is very hard to have a flourishing city all around if one side of town is getting the majority of business. If a city plans to have a better economy, building a new sports stadium is not the way to go. Most of the time the stadiums do not work out economically. That does not mean that stadiums can not work out in a city but just that the fact that the city will not become rich off of this introduction of a stadium (Jacobson 23). There are a lot of sports cities that struggle because of new stadiums coming into their community and a lot of businesses that have gone out of business because of this. The government should stop giving out this free money to big money franchises.

  • 46. Arguments Against The Drug War Each day it seems America slips further away from the true meaning of individual liberty. I m sure you have been raised to think that you grew up in the land of the free, but I question what the true definition of freedom is. Now don t get me wrong, I agree that other countries may not have as much freedom as we do in America but that s not my argument. The problem is that The land of the free isn t so free anymore. It seems we go against the constitution more often every year. The drug war is a great example of us loosening our grips on the constitution because of the precise fact that it takes away individual liberty. Using drugs is most certainly not anything I would advise, but if it was my choice to make for you then you wouldn t truly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believe that law enforcement using their powers is making America more drug free. The facts prove this to be incorrect though, because it is doing everything except for what it was created to do. Since the day that the drug war began drug use has expanded steadily, which is the complete opposite of its purpose. What people fail to realize is that others will use drugs regardless of if it is legal or not. During the 1920 s the alcohol prohibition brought similar outcomes as the drug war is. It s causing violence, lawlessness, gangs, brutality and corruption. The reasoning for the violence was not that selling or making alcohol was unsafe, but was ultimately caused by the brutal black market, which sent profits through the roof. As Congressmen Ron Paul once stated The only beneficiaries are the drug barons, smugglers and dealers who enjoy exorbitant profits, and those dark forces in government who try to further suppress our freedoms under the excuse of fighting the war against drugs. Pablo Escobar s son stated that the United States Government used to work with Pablo. They worked with him by smuggling more drugs into America and buying or selling drugs to and from Pablo himself. That is just one man s word but there have been multiple times when the CIA has been called out in making or selling cocaine. If the drug war were working there wouldn t be a large amount of people using drugs and there wouldn t be people committing crimes to get the drugs, because if it were working then the country would be drug free. I iterate that people still use drugs and the drug war has done nothing but create violence, send people to jail and ruin opportunities for the person. According to Mona Chalabi, in a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2013 found that despite efforts to limit the supply of drugs, since the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The Design Philosophy of Ruby Ross Wood The Design Philosophy of Ruby Ross Wood D Aja Anderson Professor Jennifer Hopkins Tidewater Community College SDV 101 17 December 15, 2012 This paper expounds on the life and design style of Ruby Ross Wood. Her abstract life was during the cookie cutter times of the 1900 s. During these times the everyday woman went from being a homemaker to earning wages and being a prominent member of society. It was an excellent time in history when the women of the world stood on the threshold of greatness. The world desperately needed an eccentric, intelligent, and strong female designer in the public eye who would forever change the way we look at design and what is beautiful. Being a descendent of several families prominent in America ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Baldwin, Wood s professional credo was: The final judgment in decorating is not the logic of the mind, but the logic of the eye. (Wikipedia contributors). Mrs. Wood embraced many different cultural designs, and preferred to design with old world intent rather than embrace modern design. Her Death and Legacy Ruby Ross Wood died 1950 of lung cancer. She was described by many as eccentric, but was best described by Mitchell Owens who wrote: Ruby Ross Wood was an anomaly when compared with the other prominent decorators of her day. She was not a charter member of the international social set, like Elsie de Wolfe. She was not a beautiful society divorcée, like Dorothy Draper. And she most decidedly was not a glamorous kept woman, like Rose Cumming. Instead, Ruby Ross Wood chain smoking, impatient, tart tongued was what used to be called a working girl. Ruby Wood did not start her career with the intention to become a world famous interior designer, but she did become one. She was different in many ways from the interior decorators of her time, but from the looks of things that is what made her work so exciting and vibrant. She is also a great example of realizing and pursing your dreams. She found her passion in life and followed through to the end, and even when she failed she kept going. When thinking of Ruby Ross Wood you should not only admire her design ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
