Essay On Joint Meeting
I am very grateful and most honored for the invitation to address a Joint Meeting of the United
States Congress. I was born in Cuba, almost 43 years ago, under the control of its totalitarian
communist government. My father suffered persecution for criticizing the regimen and faced
allegations of planning to immigrate to the US to overthrow the Castro s revolution. In 1961 he
was sentenced to prison for many years. The government continually harassed and intimidated my
family and limited resources of education and jobs for the whole family, before and after my
father was released from prison. Their repressive acts also included public acts of shaming and
threats. Meetings were held near our house and angry multitudes of people approached us yelling
denigrating words, throwing eggs at us, and holding sticks threatening us to beat us. We were
fortunate, but not many others in my small town, who were beaten up to death. Finally, on April
18, 1994, we traveled to the US after my father was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Today I call on to your humanity for those that live a life of oppression I once experienced.
During all these years, I have learned about American history and although I know there have
been many errors in the past, certainly you have built a great nation where freedom is indeed
palpable. In his beautiful poem, the negro speaks of rivers African American author Langston
Hughes, wrote and I quote: I have known rivers; I have known rivers ancient as the world and
older than the flow of human veins. My soul has grown like the rivers. I heard the singing of the
Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans and I have seen its muddy, bosom turn
all golden in the sunset. The author was referring to the muddy, dark and horrible time of slavery
but then he mentions how it turned golden in the sunset referring to the freedom that it was granted
to slaves by Abraham

On William Wordsworth s Preface to Lyrical Ballads
On William Wordsworth s Preface to Lyrical Ballads The late 18th century saw a fundamental
change in the historically rigid structure of poetry, as witnessed by the collection of poems
entitled Lyrical Ballads, penned by William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge. At first deemed
an experiment, Lyrical Ballads garnered enough interest and favor to warrant Wordsworth s
Preface to Lyrical Ballads in 1802, as an introduction to the second edition of the collection. This
revolutionary preface became a manifesto of sorts, ushering in a period of poetrydefined by
descriptions of raw emotion, while straying away from the hierarchy of past poetry. More
specifically, Wordsworth advocated a break from poetic diction and a divergence from

By weaving all of these elements together, Wordsworth creates a powerful collection of poems,
where he attempts to achieve his goal of creating an overflow of powerful feelings (Wordsworth
265). Lyrical Ballads revolutionized the field of poetry, and Wordsworth s manifesto helped lay the
groundwork for many poets throughout the romantic period. He managed this feat by using
common language to describe the joys and struggles of the average family. This heightened the
emotional response of the reader, along with the reader s ability to relate to the themes and
imagery drawn from nature. In this endeavor, Wordsworth believed that a species of poetry would
be produced, which is genuine poetry (Wordsworth 274).

Argumentative Speech On Athenian Republic
I Eryximachus am here at the assembly today to speak to you all about an important issue regarding
all Athenians. I came here today to revise the citizen franchise by giving credit to those who
deserve it. Athens, right now, is experiencing hardships from the war. We the citizens of Athens
must unite the people of our great polis to join together in returning our polis back to the mighty
Athens. The only way to do such is by resigning the law granting any resident of Athens citizenship
with an Athenian born father. We discredit most of our Athenian residents who in all our ways earn
the deserving credit and political stance in our polis. The most important discredited being women
and metics. Granting them political rightsis only for the benefit of Athens which is why I am
speaking here today. I am sure to get many opposed looks and thoughts at first, but please hold
your opinions until you hear what I have to say. Athens well being is my only concern, and I
hope, as I look at all of you, that it is yours as well.
The first item of agenda is the women population and what they do offer us. Hold back your
confusion and look not on what we always believe to be right but what I have to tell you today
about women and their value. Think about fertility, the ritual of peplos, civic cults, and funerary
rites. Think about yourself, your uncles, and sons and remember that without women s abilities to
bear children Athens would not be able to produce soldiers or philosophers the

Water Density Lab
The purpose of this experiment is to learn how to measure mass and volume and to determine the
density of water, alcohol, and a solid. We will be using a laboratory scale or balance and the
graduated cylinder to determine the density of water and of alcohol. First, place an empty
graduated cylinder on a balance, determine its mass and record the value under the Densityof Water:
Data Table. Next, pour 25 mL of tap water into the graduated cylinder. Place the cylinder on the lab
bench and read the volumeof the water using the bottom of the meniscus and the volume makings
on the cylinder. Then, replace the cylinder filled with water back on the balance to weigh and
record the mass of both cylinder and water. Next, subtract the mass of the empty

Comparing Media Images Of Criminological Research Essay
iii.Comparing Media Images to Criminological Research
The superhero genre is so popular and influential that many studies have been done on its
depictions of the groups and the impact it has on a large part of society how it has become a
staple on film, television, and in video games (Darowski). The genre is so influential in fact,
that it dates back all the way to the Ancient Greeks, and possibly even further (Haynes). Every
group in history has had their mythologies and epic tales of crime fighters, they just did not call
them superheroes. For example, Achilles only had one weakness (his heel) and was by the
Greeks definition, considered a hero (greek gods.org). The same goes for heroes like Perseus,
Theseus, and even Heracles. Back then though instead of being changed into a super soldier in a
lab by a German scientist or creating a flying metal suit in the desert, these heroes were part god
which explained their extra ordinary abilities. Super crime fighters have always existed, but when
comic books began in the 19th century a new set of rules was created to guide their content to be
more appropriate than the Greek tales (Coville).
The Comics Code was a list of regulations regarding the depiction of certain events in comic books
maintained by the Comics Magazine Association of America (Nyberg). The code was very strict
and eventually challenged by Stan Lee (one of the creators of Marvel) through a story arc in the
Spiderman Comics that dealt with drug abuse.

Space Exploration And Tourism During The Cold War Of 1947
Previous to space colonization and tourism, one must explore the given planet; understanding the
problems and providing solutions to protect and aid the coming population. During the Cold War of
1947 through 1991, the United States and Russia fought for the accomplishment of space travel; the
moon was the primary target due to humans general understanding as well as the relative closeness
to the earth. Besides the sun, the moonwas the utmost visible object in the sky. July 20, 1967, The
U.S. put the first man on the moon, One small step for man one giant leap for mankind. During
December, 1972, Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan set foot on the moon and is the last known
man to do so. Forty four years later, humans debate over whether or not man should set foot on the
moon. Today, the main question is, why humans should set foot on the moon? The company Space
Exploration will allow the furthering of scientific knowledge, improved energy crisis, international
cooperation, excavation of resources, bodily preparation for gravitational disadvantages,
exploration preparation, and surface liftoff medium. With the moon being three days away (with
current technologies), humans can improve overall understanding and life circumstances in relation
to lunar exploration. The moon s surface is primarily untouched land that is around 3 4.5 billion
years old. This indicates that it still withholds early geologic history: early meteor fragments, comet
fragments, ancient solar wind

The Importance Of Being The Middle Child
Being the middle child, I have always thought of myself as the forgotten one. I m not the first
born or the baby of the family so I was, and still am, sort of looked over. My parents, although I
am sure they did not mean to, have proven me right about this many times. I was only four years
old the first time I was forgotten. My mothergot all of my sisters into the car as we were leaving K
mart, the biggest store in town, when she forgot to check if I was there. It wasn t until she had
already driven across town and told my sister to ask me what I wanted from Taco Bell that she
realized I was not there. Being a whole four years old, I figured I could navigate the town pretty
well by myself, so I began my journey home alone. Unfortunately, the policeman did not see it the
same way and I only made it to the end of the parking lot. To my mother s advantage, we lived in
a very small town, so she got in no sort of trouble for this mistake.
I have had the chance to establish the most important relationships in my life, relationships that
have built me into the person I am today and am still growing to be. The most prominent people
in my life have always been my four sisters: Jasmine, Stirling, Lukila, and Isabella. Each of them
have impacted me in a completely unique way because they are all so different. Over the years, we
have all been split up many times. In other words, we ve been put in all sorts of places on the map
and back again. For the most part, I have always had

How Does Gene Mature In A Separate Peace
A Separate Peace by John Knowles, introduces the story of Genes arduous struggle to adulthood
during a time when the U.S. is experiencing World War I, Gene constantly lashes at himself for his
incompetence to understand his adolescent feelings and excel like his honest and capable best
friend, Phineas or nicknamed Finny. Furthermore, Gene avoids confronting his fears in hope to
maintain his childlike happiness at school in conformity, but no doubt, I believe; growth comes
only from strife and struggle, and Gene protects his conformity through obedience to his friends and
teachers, thus, Gene is safe and can not grow. Presumably, Gene, unconsciously, thrusts Finny of a
high tree in a fit of jealousy of Finny s athletic talents, of which, Finny... Show more content on

I mull over my project for days, finally, I went to scroll through reference images including the
Philip Exeter school and A Separate Peaceposters, hoping to draw inspiration for my piece.
Meanwhile, I notice the covers revolves around Gene and Finny sitting and hanging out on the
lone tree as best friends lounging together, which was inaccurate, Gene and Finny never climbs
the tree to converse. Thus, I did not feel the artist made justice of the relevance of the scene. So,
I flip through my cool dark blue sketchbook to a silky and blank neonate page; crisp and full of
possibility. Thereupon, I drew two people as Gene since Leper remarks, I could see both of
them... the sun was blazing... the rays... shooting past them...like golden machine gun fire... them
looked... as black as death standing there...one of them... holding the trunk... sank... up and down...
the other one sank and fell (174 176). There is an uncertainty whether Gene is in front or behind
Finny, however, Gene and the readers understand Gene is in front, who pushes Finny off. I
display Gene on the tree with lax Finny falling down the branches, I made Finny falling like an
elegant leaf floating down to the ground. Moreover, Finny extends his athletic arms outwards to
Gene like a child to his stuffed teddy bear. This scene is a cause to Gene s bitter step to adulthood.

The Alternatives Of Makeup Testing On Animals
Makeup testing on animals is when animals are utilized to test the safety and hypoallergenic
reaction of the products. In the United States animal testing is legal but regulated by The United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the Animal Health Inspection Services (AHIS).
Regulations include the handle and care of the animal among all stages of life, and not being able
to use pets such as dogs, cats, horses, etc. for testing purposes. When makeup is tested on animals
they are harmed. Animals with harm include: inflamed skin, dry skin, bleeding, swollen eye,
blindness, and sometimes death. When a product does not go as planned, or the products is not
okay to use, it is usually told by the reaction of the animal being tested. Animals that are usually
used for makeup are smaller animals such as rats, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits. The reason
scientist uses animals to test makeup products, is because their skin and hair are so similar to
humans. According to the Humane society international, ...100,000 200,000 suffer and die every
year due to cosmetic testing. (Zuazua). There are alternatives for testing makeup on animals. Some
alternatives include methods that use human blood, cell lines, and artificial skin. Society is
beginning to become eco friendlier which is turning people s outlook on using products that test on
animals or not. Cosmetic testing is harmful due to the chemical reaction of a certain product. When
animals are tested for cosmetic purposes they

The Positive And Negative Impacts Of Immigration
Where did immigration start? Why did immigration start? Was immigration encouraged by our
government? What were the positive and negative impacts of immigration? Immigration has been
occurring for many years. Throughout history immigrating to different lands was very common.
During the early 1800s through the early 1900s, nearly 30 million foreigners were arriving in the
United States. In the late 1800s in a single year close to 400,000 immigrants arrived. During this
time the immigrants were helping shape America by supplying labor and industrialization. When
people were first migrating to North America as this country was getting started, the American
people had a very narrow mindset, therefore, as people from other countries migrated to the U.S.
little by little the country was broadened. The country was broadened along with the American
people, their laws and foreign peoples perspective of America. As the perspectives of foreign
people changed migration to America was encouraged.
First, before America was bound to begin: The Native Americans were here in North America
first, then the Europeans settlers came to this land and were taken from the natives. Many
injustices have occurred in history but this is how America was shaped to be the country it is
now. Therefore, it can be viewed in two different was in a positive and a negative way. For
example, it can be positive because through our past events in history we were able to become the
country we are today. Although

Confession And False Confessions
Interrogation is common activity for police officers. Interrogations are used with suspects to gain
information on a case and hopefully get a confession. Recently, the issue of false confessions and
poor interrogation tactics have come to light in the media. With T.V. movies, such as Netflix s
Making a Murderer , or the podcast Serial , potential issues with the process of interrogationbecome
a public concern. These concerns need to be researched to determine what issues do exist in the
system and how many of these cases are just random, rather than normal occurrences.
One of the major concerns is that police and other law enforcement officials may not be able to
distinguish between a real confession and a false confession. The fear is that law enforcement
officials may be overconfident in their abilities to get a true confession so they are missing these
false confessions. With this, another issue is that individuals may give a coerced confession either
because they have been in interrogation for quite some time and want to be done or because the
tactics used in interrogation make them believe they did commit a crime. Another concern is that
police are finding ways to around the Miranda Rights. They may be using tactics that prevent
clients from invoking their Miranda Rights or just tricking them into talking after they have
invoked their rights like in the Rhode Island vs Innis case. With this there is also the issue that
individuals may be read their rights but

Essay about The Odyssey
The life of a God, forever bliss, complete happiness: Odysseus slights all of these things in order
for him to return to his loving wife and son. The concept of true commitment was a very
commendable quality for a Greek hero to possess. With this character trait, Odysseus models the
ideal husband, father, and leader. Unfortunately, in today s society, one rarely encounters such
outstanding morality. Being raised in an explicit society, a decrease in certain morals has become
fashionable. In particular, the college experience has become accepted as the wild times of one s
life. Certain activities ordinarily shunned are now perceived as a learning experiencewhen involving
a college student. Drugs and alcohol abuse are commonplace around... Show more content on

But let him have no company, gods or men,
Only a raft that he must lash together,
And after twenty days, worn out at sea,
He shall make land upon the garden aisle. (263)
This edict of Zeus summarizes the journey Odysseus makes in order to return home. He endures dire
hardships to make the journey home, yet he still chooses to continue forward. Although Odysseus
accepts this hardship as a mere speed bump, many people today would not prevail through such
adversity. A knack for finding the easy way out has seemed to blossom as the one uniform skill
possessed by most young people today. With today s technology, a person rarely spends an
afternoon by himself, and if so, would not like it. With this in mind, choosing to continue on with
the journey in present times would be much harder of a decision to make than in ancient times.
Another problem around school campuses is the growing rate of alcohol and drug abuse amongst
students. Extreme marijuana usage has taken claim to many victims. The drug may not kill the
person using it, but it does kill motivation. The drug becomes a part of the user s life, and the user
will eventually become lethargic. This lethargy continues to increase until most productive
activities are eliminated. Although Odysseus s crew did not have marijuana on their ship, his crew
did encounter a drug that posed a similar threat. Odysseus explains the drug, but those who ate this
honeyed plant, the Lotus,/ never cared to report,

Emtala
Background
EMTALA is the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act that was developed in 1985 as part
of the Title IX of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act that went into effect in the
year 1986 (Sara Rosenbaum, 2012). EMTALA was developed after an article was published in
1986 that documented how Cook County Hospital in Chicago was receiving patients that were
dumped there that were unemployed, minorities, and lacked health insurance (Singer, 2014). This
problem also occurred in 1983 in Dallas where over 200 patients were transferred between
hospitals that were not stable (Singer, 2014). EMTALA is under the direction of the Department of
Health and Human Services and was developed to address the needs of Americans ... Show more

The filing of the complaint must be completed within 72 hours of the transfer (Sally Austin, 2011).
As a result of this, it has been difficult to see whether or not EMTALA has truly been successfully
implemented and effective (Sara Rosenbaum, 2012). Another disadvantage is that EMTALA only
requires hospitals to treat true emergencies , which are subjective in nature. The last revisions in
2003 for EMTALA by policymakers and CMS limited EMTALA to only patients that arrived to the
emergency department, not to other areas of the hospital, such as a doctor s office appointment or
outpatient surgery (Sara Rosenbaum, 2012). Another negative consequence of EMTALA that is
not addressed by the law is that emergency department physicians can still be held liable and face
malpractice issues by uninsured patients (Singer, 2014). There have been legislative proposals by
members of Congress that are working to change this to include physicians as members of the
Public Health Services, which would address these concerns (Singer, 2014). These hesitations by
physicians has forced some hospitals to close their emergency departments in California to avoid
these financial consequences of lawsuits (Friedman, 2011). As a policymaker, EMTALA was

intentionally nominating them together because, as individuals, they are outstanding leaders;
however, as a team, they are unstoppable. Their leadership goes above and beyond that of their
peers, together creating a team of deputies that have received respect and attention from the

his personal assistance. Sergeant Prindle conducts himself in a professional manner and his
leadership style gains the respect of his deputies. His uniform is always clean, pressed and well
fitted. His command presence is an example for others to follow. He motivates his deputies by
leading from the front, answering calls for service and conducting traffic stops, while maintaining
his administrative duties. He maintains a healthy lifestyle and encourages his deputies to do the
same. He is also an active member of the SWAT team and encourages his deputies to seek out
collateral duties to enhance their law enforcement career and expand their knowledge. On his off

BACKGROUND:
Psoriasis is a multi systemic, chronic, inflammatory disease, with the most common manifestations
being in the skin and joints.4, 5 It is estimated that 1 3% of the population has psoriasis, though it
may be less prevalent in Africa and Asia than other parts of the world.5 Psoriasisis further divided
into different categories, the most common of which is plaque psoriasis, which affects 80 90%
of patients with psoriasis.4 The defining characteristic of plaque psoriasis is the presence of
erythematous, sharply demarcated, scaly, white or silver plaques, which can range in their size
and coverage of the body.4 These plaques may be itchy and bleed if disturbed.5 The most common
sites for plaques are the trunk, buttocks, scalp, and limbs.4 Additionally about 1/3 of patients with

Exploring Identity In The Harlem Renaissance
Exploring Identity in the Harlem Renaissance During the 1920s, black literature and culture
exploded in a movement known as the Harlem Renaissance, which at its forefront directly
challenged white stereotypes that defined black perception in society. Thus, one major focus during
this movement was to recreate and define a new identity for black Americans through the lens of
art. Two poets attempted such a feat and, in their works, argued for an identity centered on the
authentic roots and customs of African American culture. As evidenced by I, too, Theme for
English B, and The Melting Pot, Hughes and Randall assert that black racial identity should not be
sequestered, but instead should be embraced in society. Langston Hughes, in I, too ... Show more

Fascism In Germany
Fascism succeeded in Germany, not as a result of Hitler being elected. There were many factors
that lead Hitler and the Nazi party to succeed. Hitler took advantage of situations such as the
Great Depression and the Reichstag fire to help the Nazi Party gain support and obtain power of
Germany. Along with taking advantage of those factors Hitler was able to convince the members
of Reichstag to pass the Enabling Act. Another way Hitler was able to gain more support was by
rewarding the people of Germanywith organizations such as the Gleichstang and strength through
joy. The Great Depression of 1929 impacted Germany tremendously. Already gone through the
Hyperinflation of 1923, the struggling Germany economy was facing another challenge. Many
Germans encountered unemployment along with German farmers facing the threat of price
declines of commodities and also the declining of markets. With many Germans facing
unemployment this meant they were not able to earn money so it was difficult to get food or other
necessities. This economic hardship gave Hitler the opportunity to reach out to the people of
Germany who were outraged and worried about their future. So, this economic tragedy brought
new supporters, voters, activists to the Nazi Party, which led them to gain more popularity. With
more support and popularity, the Nazi Party kept on growing and becoming more powerful. In
January 1933 Hitler was designated as Chancellor. He did not have much power at the beginning of

Intended Conversion to Christianity in Flannery O Conner s...
I think that Flannery O Connor s short story A Good Man is Hard to Find is written partially in
order to convert people who have not yet fully accepted the Christian faith. O Conner, having a
strong upbringing and solid Christian background, wrote this story believing it would help people
who do not have a strong moral base and Christian convictions to seriously making the necessary
changes. Flannery O Connorshowed deep concern towards the value system of the youth at the
time. She firmly believed in helping to guide the youth in a positive direction. Her belief that
Christ was no longer a major priority to the people of her generation was a driving motivation. A

Her characters never seem to find their redemption until they find God at the end. People of
Christian faith have often criticized O Connor s works for being immoral, but in actuality, she
writes about these extreme situations and portrayals of wrongdoing to express the power of
God in a positive light. O Connor both gracefully and skillfully shows the immoral character of
the Misfit as well as the enlightened character of the grandmother. The characters in A Good
Man is Hard to Find evolve through a sort of metamorphosis. There are changes that occur in
their views of the world and their perceptions about life and death. In this body of work, we see
those changes occur in the Grandmother and in the Misfit. The Misfit is shown to be constantly
experiencing a deep inner struggle with his own convictions. We see this clearly in his
conversation with the Grandmother. O Conner s skillful portrayal of the Misfit helps the reader
to detect some obscure details of his behavior. These details, his gestures, his speech, and his
thoughts are key elements in determining the Misfit s state of mind. We see the grandmother
become timid over the course of the story. She seems to have some type of identity crisis. Starting
off bold and confident, we see the Grandmother very humble and timid by the end. Her ideas of
what she should look like and how she should talk no longer mattered. O Connor also shows that
the Grandmother s idea of a southern

The witness, Wali Khan, is thirty five years old and can speak, read and write English. He initially
identified himself as Haji Alam Khan, the father of Mohammed Aslam. He later identified himself

outside world.
Throughout both lessons that are presented they showcase various amounts of positive practices
throughout their learning experiences. Within Psalia lesson it is evident that Psalia explores the use
of open ended questions and materials, encouragement of peer discussion and learning and uses an
arrange of concrete resources. Psalia explores Palindromic numbers with students through the use of
open ended materials and questioning which allows students to enter the activity at their own level.
Through the use of open ended materials and questioning it speaks to all students to each learning
ability. Reys (2016 p.39) suggests that open ended questioning allows students to express their ideas
and hear other points of views to gain a vast understanding. Psalia successfully structures the lessons
to encourage peer discussion and individual learning, this is clear in the lesson as students can input
their knowledge into the discussion, linked from open ended questioning. Reys (2016 p.22)
expresses that educators should encourage children to reflect on their own learning as it inspires
students to explore and explain their thinking. Exploring peer discussion gives the students an
opportunity to experiment and apply to their work, this is evident in the video (0.55 1.10) where
children are exploring through the use of number chart where they create their own assumptions
and formulas to create a palindromic number. Psalia introduces an arrange of concrete materials
and resources such as slips of paper and computers. Using concrete materials such as the paper
slips allows students to explore and create strategies to create connections to the mathematics
provided (Reys. 2016 p.344) The use of computers is a positive practice as students can explore
numbers they have experimented with to see how and if they are successful. ACARA (2012 p.11)
makes a point of how influential technology is to learning which is evident towards the end of the
lesson where the whole class is engage to the computer activity to explore their palindromic
numbers. It is visible throughout the lesson that the educator s

The color yellow appears most at Bearpaw Lake State Park, where a yellow raft is in blue water.
Rayona feels the yellow boat as an escape from reality and feels peaceful whenever she s on it.
This is because of Ellen DeMarco. When Rayona sees Ellen for the first time, Rayona admires
her because she assumes that Ellen has a perfect life that Rayona dreams and imagines of
having, even when Ellen gets off and on the yellow raft. The yellow raft is so precious to
Rayona that the yellow raft symbolizes the life that Rayona is desperate for, but she cannot and

Roma Stereotypes
While reading and listening to the interview I learned a ton form Isabel Fonseca. I always knew
there was a stereotype placed on the Roma/gypsy societies, I had no clue how segregated they
still are today. The Roma people are treated very poorly in the majority of Europe, because they
are uneducated and different. But by segregating the Roma and not allowing them in our schools
they wont ever be able to better them self s and blend better into society. Roma society s deal with
stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination which I am going to discuss in this paper. First the
Roma society s deal with people stereotyping them into one lump. People see them as uneducated,
but partially we are to blame because we wont allow them to merge into our society. Due to them
being uneducated they live in poverty. Gypsies are stereotyped as being poor, due to this we treat
them poorly regardless if we know if they are poor or not. Last we also treat them differently and
define them by the way they dress. But by us stereotyping them we are taking away their
opportunities to better themselves. Second the Roma society s deal with prejudice everyday. For
example, in the interview and article that we read there was a story about a camp of Roma s in...

Formal Context In Double Indemnity, By Billy Wilder
Formal context is a big part of why movies are how they are. In Double Indemnity (1944) clip, by
Billy Wilder, there are many formal context elements that are important as to why the choices
are made during scenes. Some of these are the types of shots, camera movement, lighting, and
the mise en scene. This paper analyzes the five shots in the two minute and thirty three second
scene in depth. The prologue shot is forty four seconds, which is a long take. It starts with a tall,
dominant character walking towards the elevator. As he is walking the shot transforms from a
medium long shot (also known as plan americain) quickly to a medium shot. The character is
facing the front of the elevator while giving his back the camera, building a distance between the
audience and the character. He is wearing his coat in one arm and is trying to cover his other arm
with the other side, showing to the audience that he is hiding an injury. As soon as he is in the
elevator, a short delicate character follows him into the elevator and begins talking to him.
Viewers find out the tall character s name is Neff. During the first thirty seconds of the shot, the
camera is static and the music is extra diegetic, which builds anticipation towards Neff who is
wearing a mysterious hat that covers his face. The worker attempts to initiate a conversation with
Neff, but he is very dry, building more anticipation to what is going to happen. When Neff exits the
elevator, there is a tracking shot where

The Irresponsible Deployment of Tasers by Canadian Police...
Introduction
Invented by NASA researcher, John H. Cover, in the 1960 s and 70 s, the TASERВ® has been
widely adopted by police agencies as a non lethal alternative to guns. While these devices have
aided authorities in subduing suspects, it has also resulted in numerous unnecessary deaths. The
general perception of the non lethality of Tasers along with poor judgement on the part of law
enforcement has culminated in the over use and apparent misuse of discharge against suspects
when alternate options have existed. The following paper will discuss in detail the creation of
Conducted Energy Weapons (CEW) and the TASERВ®; negative medical implications of Tasers
and their current use by police enforcement groups; the laws which govern the use of ... Show more

In fact, in Canada, TASERВ® International Inc. is the only authorized retailer for CEW s, and
these devices are considered a prohibited weapon and can only be sold to law enforcement
agencies ( Facts about stun, 2009).
Tasers work in either a stun gun mode delivered in close proximity or by deploying two probes
from the machine which imbed into the victim s body. Each mode carries a pulsating electric
current which delivers a shock to their neural network. These shocks overwhelm normal neural
traffic and result in involuntary muscle contractions and impaired motor skills ( How a taser,
2013). Currently in Canada, the X26 s are the most widely used version of the Taser, these were
introduced in 2003 for law enforcement and military use as a more compact and stronger option
to the earlier model, M26. Some notable features of the X26 taser are data storage capability
which stores date, time, and burst duration for up to 1,500 discharges, as well as audio and video
recording during discharges which can record up to 90 minutes.
Medical Implications
While the X26 taser is equipped to deliver 50,000 volts of electricity (over 400 times more electrical
current than the standard house light switch), the transfer of this current through clothing or air
decreases the current to 1,300 volts.

The Reasons for the Hostility Between Austria Hungary and Serbia During 1878 and 1914
Between 1878 and 1914, there was generally a lot of hostility in the Balkans this was mainly due to
the weakening Ottoman Empire, this allowed countries within it to start to fight for independence
and the greater powers surrounding it to try and take over parts of it.
After the Treaty of Berlin, 1878, Austria Hungary was given the right to occupy and administer the
Ottoman province of Bosnia Herzegovina. In 1908, after growing fears of Serbia and Russia
becoming stronger, Austria Hungary annexed Bosnia Herzegovina. This angered the Serbsbecause
they had wanted Bosnia Herzegovina to be in their control as the ... Show more content on

The results of the first Balkan War in 1912 were another cause of hostility between the two
countries. As a result of this war Serbia had gained control of the Adriatic coastline, and had also
taken over Albania. Austria Hungary resented and feared the sudden growth of Serbia and
wanted Serbia to give up both the Adriatic coast and Albania. Russia however supported the
Serbs, and he and Austria Hungary mobilised their troops against one another. A peace treaty was
drawn up and by May 1913 the Treaty of London was signed. In this treaty Serbia lost control of
the Adriatic coast and Albania was made an independent state, however they did gain control of
central and northern Macedonia. They felt this was inadequate and blamed Austria Hungary for
their loss of land. This was a significant factor in the hostility between the two sides as it made
Austria Hungary fear Serbian growth and angered Serbia as they felt that whenever they made
gains of land in the Balkans the Austrians would thwart it.
The results of the second Balkan war were also key factors in the hostility between the two
countries. In 1913 Serbia and Greece went to war with Bulgaria to win land they thought they
deserved after the first war. Bulgaria was defeated and in the Treaty of Bucharest Serbia and
Greece got to keep those parts of Macedonia they had captured. The Serbs then went on to

After watching both of the films for this week I definitely noticed a difference in the film narratives
due to musical numbers and how they were integrated. While watching 42nd Street, the musical

between the numbers and the filmmade me question, the films event s and I thought I

It was as if the focus was the music numbers opposed to the films, which in my opinion is the
best part of a musical. I enjoyed watching the numbers and seeing the elaborate costumes and
details that were put into them. Furthermore, in Cabaret, one could tell that the music numbers
really fit in with the film and provided more insight into what was going on. A good example of
this was the during the musical number Maybe This Time sung by Sally which demonstrated her
relationship with Brian and how it has evolved. Their relationship turned into more than a
friendship and as the number goes on Sally sings of the hope she has of this relationship being
the real deal and withstanding the test of time.Through this musical number the audience is able
to understood how Sally is feeling without the use of any actual dialogue. I do believe there is
some relation between the context of integration/non integration and the contexts in which the
films were made. 42nd Street was created during the Great Depression and it seems as if there
was some caution in terms of the film was made. It seems as if the events of the film were more so

Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated
Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated
I think we ought to have a draft. I think if a nation goes to war, it shouldn t be represented by a
professional force because it gets to be unrepresentative of the population . . . . (Fayette, par. 2).
Those are the words of General Stanley McChrystal, the former senior commander of international
forces in Afghanistan, speaking of his stance on whether the United States should bring back the
draft. The American public has become disconnected from the military. The time has come to do
something about this; it is time to reinstate the draft. There are three reasons why the draft should
be reinstated. The costs of military personnel have soared in recent years, it would make elected
officials think twice before sending troops overseas since there will be a larger pool of draftees it
would create a melting pot of backgrounds. Although there are those who condemn the draft, they
miss the point entirely. Without question, the draft should be reinstated immediately.
President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which
established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency within the Department
of Defense (Smith, par. 3). Young men were only drafted in America s greatest conflicts the
Civil War, Vietnam War, World War I, and the lead up to World War II (Bandow, par. 3). Nearly
2.2 million men were drafted during 1961 to 1973 (South, par. 25). This practice continued during
the Cold War as the U.S. sought to protect friendly war ravaged states (Bandow, par. 3). From
1948 until 1973, young men were drafted to fill open spots in the armed forces which could not be
filled through voluntary means (Smith, par. 4). The registration requirement was suspended in
1975 but it was resumed again in 1980, registration continues today as a hedge against
underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis (Smith, par. 10). In 1973, the
United States military went to full volunteer service that marked the end of the draft. Since the all
volunteer military has been active, there have been 144 executed operations compared to 19
operations prior to 1973 (South, par. 56). Currently, there have been talks of reinstating

Everyone Is Mortal
Everyone will one day face mortality. This was also true for Prince Prospero in the short story
by Edgar Allen Poe, The Masque of the Red Death . In it is a version of the black plague, which
is called the Red Death . Prince Prospero secludes a thousand friends and himself from the death
around them, but finds that he cannot avoid the inevitable. The author uses many literary devices
to develop the theme of unavoidable death. One of the devices used is imagery, which evokes the
events of the story clearly in the reader s mind. Another is allegory, which is used by Poe to create
another story within his, as it is filled with double meanings. Lastly, Poe utilizes symbolism to give
the story meaning. Edgar Allan Poeuses imagery, allegory, and symbolism to add dimension to his
story and to express the theme that one cannot escape death, no matter how hard one tries.
Poe uses imagery to paint a picture in readers mind, create a mood, and emphasize the significance
of certain objects. One can envision the amazement of the chambers, which had ...a tall and narrow
Gothic window...of stained glass whose color varied in accordance with the...hue...of the chamber
into which it opened and was lit up by ...a brazier of fire that projected its rays through the tinted
glass (421). One can also imagine the way the crowd slows down to a pause when the ...chiming of
the clock... [causes] disconcert and tremulousness and meditations (423). These descriptions keep

stationed in Iraq and maybe your reality if the draft is reinstated. Now, picture this. You re
watching the news, they are calling out birthdays, oh they choose yours, but uh oh this is for a
draft. You are now being shipped over to Iraq to fight with out choice. Easy as that. But what are

Too much money on something so pointless.
Pointless? Yes pointless. Do you remember why we originally went to war with Iraq? Bush told
us they had weapons of mass destruction. Do they? No. Why are we still there? I don t know...
do you? After searching Iraq for weapons and coming up empty handed George Bush decided he
did not like Sadam Hussein and the world would be much safer with out him so he attacks. He
did not even have the support of the European Union. Opposing countries included France,
Germany, Russia, Greece, Belgium and Belarus. He is now trying to make Iraq a democracy,
like the American government, which is not a bad idea at all. There is just way too much
opposition from Iraq, they obviously do not want it, let them have there dictatorship, it is not our
problem. This is a useless war now. We do have to give credit to the many countries that helped us
by sending in there own troops to Iraq. Mainly England, Italy and Poland who sent a combined total
of almost 15,000 troops to the 130,000 America sent. Unfortunately there are casualties.
Casualties include over 1000 American deaths and 7722 wounded American s in Iraq. What
about the Iraqi people? Are they cooperating? Nope, so far around 15,000 have been killed 30%
of the deaths were civilians. This is not right for Bush to do. He should not be in Iraq killing that
many people

In this paper the multinational corporation boom and its reasons are investigated and then the
challenges which these corporations encounter will be discussed.
There are certain reasons associated with the rapid growth of multinational corporations during the
last 50 years. Including but not limited to globalization, information technology telecommunication,
deregulations and worldwide market liberalization and the operation in the emerging economies
and the growth opportunity in these countries.
Globalization)
Globalization is the process of international integration caused by the exchange of products, ideas
and other aspects of the culture in a global scale. Scholars still disagree whether the globalization

believed that multinational corporations are both a cause and a result of the globalization process.
The globalization has manifested itself in the interdependence of national economies and financial
markets. There are different dimensions for the growth of multinational corporations in
globalization era. The economic dimension of the multinational corporation growth can be
presented through the numbers; including the fact that approximately 33% of the world trade

  • 2. Essay On Joint Meeting I am very grateful and most honored for the invitation to address a Joint Meeting of the United States Congress. I was born in Cuba, almost 43 years ago, under the control of its totalitarian communist government. My father suffered persecution for criticizing the regimen and faced allegations of planning to immigrate to the US to overthrow the Castro s revolution. In 1961 he was sentenced to prison for many years. The government continually harassed and intimidated my family and limited resources of education and jobs for the whole family, before and after my father was released from prison. Their repressive acts also included public acts of shaming and threats. Meetings were held near our house and angry multitudes of people approached us yelling denigrating words, throwing eggs at us, and holding sticks threatening us to beat us. We were fortunate, but not many others in my small town, who were beaten up to death. Finally, on April 18, 1994, we traveled to the US after my father was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his beautiful poem, the negro speaks of rivers African American author Langston Hughes, wrote and I quote: I have known rivers; I have known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human veins. My soul has grown like the rivers. I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans and I have seen its muddy, bosom turn all golden in the sunset. The author was referring to the muddy, dark and horrible time of slavery but then he mentions how it turned golden in the sunset referring to the freedom that it was granted to slaves by Abraham ... On William Wordsworth s Preface to Lyrical Ballads On William Wordsworth s Preface to Lyrical Ballads The late 18th century saw a fundamental change in the historically rigid structure of poetry, as witnessed by the collection of poems entitled Lyrical Ballads, penned by William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge. At first deemed an experiment, Lyrical Ballads garnered enough interest and favor to warrant Wordsworth s Preface to Lyrical Ballads in 1802, as an introduction to the second edition of the collection. This revolutionary preface became a manifesto of sorts, ushering in a period of poetrydefined by descriptions of raw emotion, while straying away from the hierarchy of past poetry. More specifically, Wordsworth advocated a break from poetic diction and a divergence from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By weaving all of these elements together, Wordsworth creates a powerful collection of poems, where he attempts to achieve his goal of creating an overflow of powerful feelings (Wordsworth 265). Lyrical Ballads revolutionized the field of poetry, and Wordsworth s manifesto helped lay the groundwork for many poets throughout the romantic period. He managed this feat by using common language to describe the joys and struggles of the average family. This heightened the emotional response of the reader, along with the reader s ability to relate to the themes and imagery drawn from nature. In this endeavor, Wordsworth believed that a species of poetry would be produced, which is genuine poetry (Wordsworth 274). Works Cited Bialostoky, Don. • 4. Argumentative Speech On Athenian Republic I Eryximachus am here at the assembly today to speak to you all about an important issue regarding all Athenians. I came here today to revise the citizen franchise by giving credit to those who deserve it. Athens, right now, is experiencing hardships from the war. We the citizens of Athens must unite the people of our great polis to join together in returning our polis back to the mighty Athens. The only way to do such is by resigning the law granting any resident of Athens citizenship with an Athenian born father. We discredit most of our Athenian residents who in all our ways earn the deserving credit and political stance in our polis. The most important discredited being women and metics. Granting them political rightsis only for the benefit of Athens which is why I am speaking here today. I am sure to get many opposed looks and thoughts at first, but please hold your opinions until you hear what I have to say. Athens well being is my only concern, and I hope, as I look at all of you, that it is yours as well. The first item of agenda is the women population and what they do offer us. Hold back your confusion and look not on what we always believe to be right but what I have to tell you today about women and their value. Think about fertility, the ritual of peplos, civic cults, and funerary rites. Think about yourself, your uncles, and sons and remember that without women s abilities to bear children Athens would not be able to produce soldiers or philosophers the ... • 6. Comparing Media Images Of Criminological Research Essay iii.Comparing Media Images to Criminological Research The superhero genre is so popular and influential that many studies have been done on its depictions of the groups and the impact it has on a large part of society how it has become a staple on film, television, and in video games (Darowski). The genre is so influential in fact, that it dates back all the way to the Ancient Greeks, and possibly even further (Haynes). Every group in history has had their mythologies and epic tales of crime fighters, they just did not call them superheroes. For example, Achilles only had one weakness (his heel) and was by the Greeks definition, considered a hero (greek gods.org). The same goes for heroes like Perseus, Theseus, and even Heracles. Back then though instead of being changed into a super soldier in a lab by a German scientist or creating a flying metal suit in the desert, these heroes were part god which explained their extra ordinary abilities. Super crime fighters have always existed, but when comic books began in the 19th century a new set of rules was created to guide their content to be more appropriate than the Greek tales (Coville). The Comics Code was a list of regulations regarding the depiction of certain events in comic books maintained by the Comics Magazine Association of America (Nyberg). The code was very strict and eventually challenged by Stan Lee (one of the creators of Marvel) through a story arc in the Spiderman Comics that dealt with drug abuse. ... During the Cold War of 1947 through 1991, the United States and Russia fought for the accomplishment of space travel; the moon was the primary target due to humans general understanding as well as the relative closeness to the earth. Besides the sun, the moonwas the utmost visible object in the sky. July 20, 1967, The U.S. put the first man on the moon, One small step for man one giant leap for mankind. During December, 1972, Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan set foot on the moon and is the last known man to do so. Forty four years later, humans debate over whether or not man should set foot on the moon. Today, the main question is, why humans should set foot on the moon? The company Space Exploration will allow the furthering of scientific knowledge, improved energy crisis, international cooperation, excavation of resources, bodily preparation for gravitational disadvantages, exploration preparation, and surface liftoff medium. I m not the first born or the baby of the family so I was, and still am, sort of looked over. My parents, although I am sure they did not mean to, have proven me right about this many times. I was only four years old the first time I was forgotten. My mothergot all of my sisters into the car as we were leaving K mart, the biggest store in town, when she forgot to check if I was there. How Does Gene Mature In A Separate Peace A Separate Peace by John Knowles, introduces the story of Genes arduous struggle to adulthood during a time when the U.S. is experiencing World War I, Gene constantly lashes at himself for his incompetence to understand his adolescent feelings and excel like his honest and capable best friend, Phineas or nicknamed Finny. Furthermore, Gene avoids confronting his fears in hope to maintain his childlike happiness at school in conformity, but no doubt, I believe; growth comes only from strife and struggle, and Gene protects his conformity through obedience to his friends and teachers, thus, Gene is safe and can not grow. • 12. The Positive And Negative Impacts Of Immigration Where did immigration start? Why did immigration start? Was immigration encouraged by our government? What were the positive and negative impacts of immigration? Immigration has been occurring for many years. Throughout history immigrating to different lands was very common. During the early 1800s through the early 1900s, nearly 30 million foreigners were arriving in the United States. In the late 1800s in a single year close to 400,000 immigrants arrived. During this time the immigrants were helping shape America by supplying labor and industrialization. When people were first migrating to North America as this country was getting started, the American people had a very narrow mindset, therefore, as people from other countries migrated to the U.S. little by little the country was broadened. The country was broadened along with the American people, their laws and foreign peoples perspective of America. As the perspectives of foreign people changed migration to America was encouraged. First, before America was bound to begin: The Native Americans were here in North America first, then the Europeans settlers came to this land and were taken from the natives. Many injustices have occurred in history but this is how America was shaped to be the country it is now. Therefore, it can be viewed in two different was in a positive and a negative way. Recently, the issue of false confessions and poor interrogation tactics have come to light in the media. With T.V. movies, such as Netflix s Making a Murderer , or the podcast Serial , potential issues with the process of interrogationbecome a public concern. These concerns need to be researched to determine what issues do exist in the system and how many of these cases are just random, rather than normal occurrences. One of the major concerns is that police and other law enforcement officials may not be able to distinguish between a real confession and a false confession. The fear is that law enforcement officials may be overconfident in their abilities to get a true confession so they are missing these false confessions. With this, another issue is that individuals may give a coerced confession either because they have been in interrogation for quite some time and want to be done or because the tactics used in interrogation make them believe they did commit a crime. Another concern is that police are finding ways to around the Miranda Rights. Another disadvantage is that EMTALA only requires hospitals to treat true emergencies , which are subjective in nature. The last revisions in 2003 for EMTALA by policymakers and CMS limited EMTALA to only patients that arrived to the emergency department, not to other areas of the hospital, such as a doctor s office appointment or outpatient surgery (Sara Rosenbaum, 2012). Another negative consequence of EMTALA that is not addressed by the law is that emergency department physicians can still be held liable and face malpractice issues by uninsured patients (Singer, 2014). There have been legislative proposals by members of Congress that are working to change this to include physicians as members of the Public Health Services, which would address these concerns (Singer, 2014). Hitler took advantage of situations such as the Great Depression and the Reichstag fire to help the Nazi Party gain support and obtain power of Germany. Along with taking advantage of those factors Hitler was able to convince the members of Reichstag to pass the Enabling Act. Another way Hitler was able to gain more support was by rewarding the people of Germanywith organizations such as the Gleichstang and strength through joy. The Great Depression of 1929 impacted Germany tremendously. Already gone through the Hyperinflation of 1923, the struggling Germany economy was facing another challenge. Many Germans encountered unemployment along with German farmers facing the threat of price declines of commodities and also the declining of markets. With many Germans facing unemployment this meant they were not able to earn money so it was difficult to get food or other necessities. This economic hardship gave Hitler the opportunity to reach out to the people of Germany who were outraged and worried about their future. So, this economic tragedy brought new supporters, voters, activists to the Nazi Party, which led them to gain more popularity. Throughout both lessons that are presented they showcase various amounts of positive practices throughout their learning experiences. Within Psalia lesson it is evident that Psalia explores the use of open ended questions and materials, encouragement of peer discussion and learning and uses an arrange of concrete resources. Psalia explores Palindromic numbers with students through the use of open ended materials and questioning which allows students to enter the activity at their own level. Through the use of open ended materials and questioning it speaks to all students to each learning ability. Reys (2016 p.39) suggests that open ended questioning allows students to express their ideas and hear other points of views to gain a vast understanding. Psalia successfully structures the lessons to encourage peer discussion and individual learning, this is clear in the lesson as students can input their knowledge into the discussion, linked from open ended questioning. Reys (2016 p.22) expresses that educators should encourage children to reflect on their own learning as it inspires students to explore and explain their thinking. Exploring peer discussion gives the students an opportunity to experiment and apply to their work, this is evident in the video (0.55 1.10) where children are exploring through the use of number chart where they create their own assumptions and formulas to create a palindromic number. Psalia introduces an arrange of concrete materials and resources such as slips of paper and computers. Using concrete materials such as the paper slips allows students to explore and create strategies to create connections to the mathematics provided (Reys. 2016 p.344) The use of computers is a positive practice as students can explore numbers they have experimented with to see how and if they are successful. ACARA (2012 p.11) makes a point of how influential technology is to learning which is evident towards the end of the lesson where the whole class is engage to the computer activity to explore their palindromic numbers. Roma society s deal with stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination which I am going to discuss in this paper. First the Roma society s deal with people stereotyping them into one lump. People see them as uneducated, but partially we are to blame because we wont allow them to merge into our society. Due to them being uneducated they live in poverty. Gypsies are stereotyped as being poor, due to this we treat them poorly regardless if we know if they are poor or not. Last we also treat them differently and define them by the way they dress. In Double Indemnity (1944) clip, by Billy Wilder, there are many formal context elements that are important as to why the choices are made during scenes. Some of these are the types of shots, camera movement, lighting, and the mise en scene. This paper analyzes the five shots in the two minute and thirty three second scene in depth. The prologue shot is forty four seconds, which is a long take. It starts with a tall, dominant character walking towards the elevator. As he is walking the shot transforms from a medium long shot (also known as plan americain) quickly to a medium shot. The character is facing the front of the elevator while giving his back the camera, building a distance between the audience and the character. He is wearing his coat in one arm and is trying to cover his other arm with the other side, showing to the audience that he is hiding an injury. As soon as he is in the elevator, a short delicate character follows him into the elevator and begins talking to him. Viewers find out the tall character s name is Neff. During the first thirty seconds of the shot, the camera is static and the music is extra diegetic, which builds anticipation towards Neff who is wearing a mysterious hat that covers his face. The worker attempts to initiate a conversation with Neff, but he is very dry, building more anticipation to what is going to happen. When Neff exits the elevator, there is a tracking shot where ... Cover, in the 1960 s and 70 s, the TASERВ® has been widely adopted by police agencies as a non lethal alternative to guns. While these devices have aided authorities in subduing suspects, it has also resulted in numerous unnecessary deaths. The general perception of the non lethality of Tasers along with poor judgement on the part of law enforcement has culminated in the over use and apparent misuse of discharge against suspects when alternate options have existed. The following paper will discuss in detail the creation of Conducted Energy Weapons (CEW) and the TASERВ®; negative medical implications of Tasers and their current use by police enforcement groups; the laws which govern the use of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, in Canada, TASERВ® International Inc. is the only authorized retailer for CEW s, and these devices are considered a prohibited weapon and can only be sold to law enforcement agencies ( Facts about stun, 2009). Tasers work in either a stun gun mode delivered in close proximity or by deploying two probes from the machine which imbed into the victim s body. Each mode carries a pulsating electric current which delivers a shock to their neural network. These shocks overwhelm normal neural traffic and result in involuntary muscle contractions and impaired motor skills ( How a taser, 2013). Currently in Canada, the X26 s are the most widely used version of the Taser, these were introduced in 2003 for law enforcement and military use as a more compact and stronger option to the earlier model, M26. Some notable features of the X26 taser are data storage capability which stores date, time, and burst duration for up to 1,500 discharges, as well as audio and video recording during discharges which can record up to 90 minutes. Medical Implications While the X26 taser is equipped to deliver 50,000 volts of electricity (over 400 times more electrical current than the standard house light switch), the transfer of this current through clothing or air decreases the current to 1,300 volts. ... The Reasons for the Hostility Between Austria Hungary and Serbia During 1878 and 1914 Between 1878 and 1914, there was generally a lot of hostility in the Balkans this was mainly due to the weakening Ottoman Empire, this allowed countries within it to start to fight for independence and the greater powers surrounding it to try and take over parts of it. After the Treaty of Berlin, 1878, Austria Hungary was given the right to occupy and administer the Ottoman province of Bosnia Herzegovina. The results of the first Balkan War in 1912 were another cause of hostility between the two countries. As a result of this war Serbia had gained control of the Adriatic coastline, and had also taken over Albania. Austria Hungary resented and feared the sudden growth of Serbia and wanted Serbia to give up both the Adriatic coast and Albania. Russia however supported the Serbs, and he and Austria Hungary mobilised their troops against one another. A peace treaty was drawn up and by May 1913 the Treaty of London was signed. In this treaty Serbia lost control of the Adriatic coast and Albania was made an independent state, however they did gain control of central and northern Macedonia. They felt this was inadequate and blamed Austria Hungary for their loss of land. This was a significant factor in the hostility between the two sides as it made Austria Hungary fear Serbian growth and angered Serbia as they felt that whenever they made gains of land in the Balkans the Austrians would thwart it. The results of the second Balkan war were also key factors in the hostility between the two countries. • 37. Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated Why The Military Draft Should Be Reinstated I think we ought to have a draft. I think if a nation goes to war, it shouldn t be represented by a professional force because it gets to be unrepresentative of the population . . . . (Fayette, par. 2). Those are the words of General Stanley McChrystal, the former senior commander of international forces in Afghanistan, speaking of his stance on whether the United States should bring back the draft. The American public has become disconnected from the military. The time has come to do something about this; it is time to reinstate the draft. There are three reasons why the draft should be reinstated. The costs of military personnel have soared in recent years, it would make elected officials think twice before sending troops overseas since there will be a larger pool of draftees it would create a melting pot of backgrounds. Although there are those who condemn the draft, they miss the point entirely. Without question, the draft should be reinstated immediately. President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency within the Department of Defense (Smith, par. 3). Young men were only drafted in America s greatest conflicts the Civil War, Vietnam War, World War I, and the lead up to World War II (Bandow, par. 3). Nearly 2.2 million men were drafted during 1961 to 1973 (South, par. 25). This practice continued during the Cold War as the U.S. sought to protect friendly war ravaged states (Bandow, par. 3). From 1948 until 1973, young men were drafted to fill open spots in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means (Smith, par. 4). The registration requirement was suspended in 1975 but it was resumed again in 1980, registration continues today as a hedge against underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis (Smith, par. 10). In 1973, the United States military went to full volunteer service that marked the end of the draft. Since the all volunteer military has been active, there have been 144 executed operations compared to 19 operations prior to 1973 (South, par. 56). Currently, there have been talks of reinstating ...
