Lab 1 Nitration Of Naphthalene
Nitration of Naphthalene
Wed 2/25/2015
Lab report # 1
Abstract:
The purpose of this experiment was to nitrate naphthalene with nitronium ion, which is formed at low
concentration from a reaction of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The percent yield from the experiment
was 54.4% of the product, and the melting point of the possible results were 59 °C for 1
nitronaphthalene, and 78°C for 2 nitronaphthalene.
Introduction:
Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene can be nitrated by the same methods as
benzene derivatives, including the well known mixed acid method that utilizes a mixture of nitric acid
and sulfuric acid. The electrophile is the nitronium ion, NO2+, which is formed at low concentration
by a reaction of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The solid was then boiled with 10ml of fresh water for 10minutes. The mixture was cooled in ice and
the product was collected by vacuum filtration. 0.1 of the crude product was then recrystallized for
5minutes with 5ml of hexane under reflux. The hot solution was filtered using a preheated filtering
paper. Crystallization occurred, and then the product was collect by vacuum filtration. The product
was dried and the melting and mass were measured of the product, nitro naphthalene.

Technology And Social Media s Effect On The People s Privacy
We collect the content and other information you provide when you use our Services, including when
you sign up for an account, create or share, and message or communicate with others (Hachman).
Each day people live with a false security that they are protected and maintain a sense of privacy.
Citizens misplace their trust in social media and technology, and divulge their personal information in
ignorance of the repercussions that may arise. Users say the advances in technology and social media
won t affect the people s privacy; however, it is proven that these advances can be a harbinger of both
danger and discontent. Our nation is built upon its foundation from the United States Constitution and
its Bill of Rights. Included in this governing document is the Fourth Amendment, the laws and
guidelines that gives us the right to privacy. Within in this amendment, it is stated that The right of the
people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and
seizures, shall not be violated (gpo). Despite the fact that these right are clearly stated and profound,
recent advances is the scopes of technology and social media have violated the people s privacy by
deceiving them into thinking they are protected. It is shown that one of the most prominent sources,
that prove a danger toward privacy, is through social media, specifically Facebook. This site alone, has

Logical Design Gregory M Dowell CIS 111 Professor Thakkar 25 February 2014 Logical Design The
purpose of normalization is to create a stable set of relations is representative of the operations of an
enterprise. By doing this we are able to reduce redundancy to save space and avoid inconsistencies in
data. It also ensures that the design is free of certain updates, insertions, and deletion anomalies
(Ricardo, 2012). With normalization as with most anything else there are advantages and
disadvantages. The advantages of normalization are: ACID, which stands for atomicity, consistency,
isolation, and durability. Atomicity means the transaction is a single unit. Either the entire set of
actions is carried out or is not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This causes an inconsistency in the data since it was only updated in one location and not all locations.
Insertion anomalies occur due to the impossibility to store some information unless other information
is stored as well. Deletion anomalies are caused by information being deleted that may cause other
information to be deleted as well. This means it may not be possible to delete some information
without deleting other information as well. That is why it is important to use normalization when
creating databases to help alleviate these problems. There are three stages to normalization, 1st NF,
2nd NF, and 3rd NF. In the 1st NF stage must ensure that the table has no multivalued attributes. If
there are the table should be broken down into separate tables so that there are no multivalued
attributes. The 2nd NF stage requires that we break the tables down even more to ensure that all
attributes and functional dependency entirely to the primary key and has met all requirements of the
1st NF. Then, and only then will it be considered to have met 2nd NF requirements. To transform the
database to 3rd NF you must identify the primary key in the 2nd NF table. Then we must identify
functional dependencies in the relationship to ensure there are no transitive dependencies. These types
of dependencies can cause insertion, deletion, and update

Relevance Of Study And Scientific Background
Relevance of Study and Scientific Background
G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are crucial for multiple areas of human physiology including
vision, olfaction, taste, hormone control, and neurotransmitter control (1). As a result of its wide
spanning functions, it is a popular area of study for therapeutic targets for many diseases (1). GPCRs
are composed of seven helices that run through the membrane with parts both inside of the cell and
outside of the cell (1).
The widely accepted model for GPCRs work is outlined in Figure 1 of this paper (2) and is essential
for understanding the rest of the paper. An agonist binds to 2AR.Then changes occur to 2AR such that
a Gs heterotrimer complex can bind to the 2AR better. The Gs ... Show more content on

T4 lysozymes (T4L) were added to 2AR to stabilize 2AR Gs. A previous paper referenced by the
Kobilka group (3) used this approach to put T4L between TM 5 and TM 6. In it this Science paper,
they expressed concern about T4L addition modifying WT 2AR. What they found were minimal
differences in the modified 2AR compared to WT (normal antagonist binding and slightly elevated
agonist binding) (3). I would have liked to have seen a similar functional comparison done for the WT
2AR compared to the T4L modified 2AR for this paper as well for completeness to ensure T4L
addition does not change function. Another problem was the variability in the position of GsAH. A
nanobody (Nb35) was bound to the complex to help reduce this variability. As with T4L addition, I
would have liked to have seen additional data included to show that the Nb35 addition does not
significantly alter the function of the protein complex. While Figure 2c) in the paper shows the
structure of the structure of the 2AR Gs complex without the aids, I would have liked to have seen
some functional tests performed on the complex, both with the aids for crystallization and without the
aids for crystallization.
A key result of this paper was finding the structure of the active state of 2AR. To find this, the agonist
bound receptor of 2AR Gs was compared to the inactive 2AR. A few differences were noted. Namely,
there is a 14 angstrom movement of TM 6 in the active form compared to

Mini-Bestest Evaluation
The Mini BESTest Because the administration of the BESTest takes from 45 to 60 minutes, which
may not be practical in all clinical settings, a condensed shorter version of the BESTest (Mini
BESTest) was created. Through the basis of rash analysis, unnecessary items and 2 sections of the
BESTest, biomechanical constrains and stability limits/vertically, were removed to yield the
assessment of dynamic balance. The Mini BESTest contains 14 items of the original 36 items from the
BESTest. The items on the Mini BESTest are scored on a 3 point scale ranging from (0) to (2). A score
of (0) indicates the lowest level of function and a score of (2) indicates the highest level of function,
leading to a possible total score of 28 points (Yingyongyudha et al., 2015). In 2015, researchers
conducted a study on 79 adults (mean age 68.7) to determine the validity of the BESTest, Mini
BESTest and Brief BESTest. Activities Specific Balance Confidence Scale, The Physical Activity

Reach Test and Timed Up and Go Test). The Mini BESTest was repeated again for the 30 participants
after 10 days in order to determine its reliability. The results showed a close relationship between
scores on the Mini BESTest and the other outcome measures. The Mini BESTest was able to detect the
difference between the fallers and non fallers groups. More importantly the Mini BESTest showed less

Uncertainty In Physics
Lab # 1: Measurements and Uncertainty in Physics Experiments 1 4 Dylan Adams Date: June 22,
2016 Abstract: Experiments 1 4 focused on using different types of measuring tools, and the
uncertainty that goes on while using these tools. The lab focused on rulers, calipers, spring scales, and
stopwatches. Each different type of measurement was analyzed for precision, accuracy, and
uncertainty. Students learned how to calculate measurements on a Vernier caliper, by using the least
half count. Students also learned the formula that was used to obtain the measurement from a caliper:
Lower tick mark value of major scale reading plus the number of least count spaces on the minor scale
multiplied by the least count of the minor scale. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As seen in table 1, the caliper was much more accurate than the ruler. This is true because the caliper
is much easier to read, and has less uncertainty than the ruler. The caliper has less uncertainty than the
ruler because it has the ability to measure at a smaller unit than the ruler. The source of error in this
experiment was that the caliper could easily be bent, giving incorrect measurements. In experiment 2
students tested the uncertainty and accuracy of a 5 and 10 N spring scale. As seen in table 2, the 5 N
spring scale had less uncertainty than the 10 N spring scale. Because of this, the 5N spring scale was
more accurate. The only downfall to the 5N spring scale was that it was not large enough to measure
the weight of the modeling clay. In experiment 3, students tested the error and uncertainty of using a
stopwatch. As seen in table 3, using a stopwatch gave a large variety of measurements. Since the time
it took the marble to fall was so small, it was hard to react quick enough to give accurate readings.
Lastly, in experiment 4 students tried to determine the density of the mass set. As seen in table 4,
students used the radius, diameter, and height in order to find the volume. Once they found the volume
they used the weight of 100 grams in order to find the density. The density of the mass set was found
to be 9.03. This value was closest to the density of copper, but the

The Sun Also Rises Robert Cohn Essay
What were your first thoughts when you read this? And then? And then? My first thought when I read
this was the realization of where Willy s stress and frustration stems from. The successes of his father
and brother in difficult environments emasculates Willy. Although he has a great superiority complex
when it comes to others, such as Charley when he comes to visit, when Willy speaks to his brother in a
hallucination like state, he acts completely submissive. His brother and father continue to have a
strong, dominating hold over him postmortem. My second thought was the realization that this is why
Willy is so hard on his children, especially Biff. Although he believes he failed in emulating his father
and brother, he views his boys as still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willy barely even knew his father, and therefore this grand legend and hero of a man he claims to be
his father, may be more a creation of his mind than memory or actuality. Fiction often makes things
out to be more grandiose than they actually are. Oftentimes, people tend to glorify what they don t
know about or have not experienced in person. Precisely, one example of someone romanticizing what
they do not understand is the character Robert Cohn from The Sun Also Rises. Specifically, at the
beginning of the story, pages 2 to 3, Robert Cohn romanticizes South America. Like how Willy does
not know his father outside of the stories he s heard from his brother, Robert Cohn knows nothing
about South America aside from what he read in The Purple Land . Neither of them knows many
specific facts, with Robert unknowing of where, IN South America, he desires to travel specifically,
and Willy struggling to remember what instrument it was that his father actually played in the few
memories he has. This vagueness in understanding enables both of these characters to further
romanticize said places or people. All Willy sees is potential perfection; however, in actuality, he
scarcely knew the man.

A Raid On The Oyster Pirates Jack London
An autobiographical sketch is when the author writes about their own experience. This is exactly what
Jack London does in his story A Raid on the Oyster Pirates . London is very skilled in the art of
character development. This explains how he was able to create such developed characters to the point
where they almost seem like real people. In A Raid on the Oyster Pirates by Jack London a lot of
detail is shown through Charley, Mr. Taft, and Centipede in terms of how they act and speak. Charley
is a good friend of the narrator. He can be viewed as very forgiving because of how he treated the
oyster pirates after they were caught stealing oysters from Mr. Taft. After the oyster pirates Charley
stated, You can dry your clothes here, lads, and get some hot coffee (London). Even after they stole
from him and his friends Charley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Centipede is viewed as very sly and deceitful. After being confronted my Mr. Taft about stealing his
oysters, his response was, Now, in my experience, broke in the tall man, oysters is oysters wherever
you find em, an they re pretty much alike all the Bay over, and the world over, too, for that matter. We
re not wantin to quarrel with you, Mr. Taft, but we jes wish you wouldn t insinuate that them oysters is
yours an that we re thieves an robbers till you can prove the goods (London). This shows how
dishonest he is. Even after being caught he still decided to lie in Mr. Taft s face and make him feel
foolish about accusing him for the crime. In conclusion, in A Raid on the Oyster Pirates by Jack
London a lot of detail is shown through Charley, Mr. Taft, and Centipede in terms of how they act and
speak. Being an oyster pirate himself back in the day really helped Jack London in a big way when it
came to writing this story. Considering he was writing about his own experiences, it must have been
very easy for him to make these characters feel

Food Famine Research Paper
Many people might believe that global famine exists nowadays just in extremely poor places of the
world and in not so high levels when indeed local level famines have erupted in Sub Saharan Africa,
South Asia and parts of Latin America. Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough
food to lead a healthy active life. That is about one in nine people on earth and the vast majority of the
world s hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is
undernourished. Which is even sadder is to think that actually the amounts of food to help solve this
situation exists around the world and instead of been designated to contribute with the cause it is
thrown to garbage. 40% percent of the food that is produced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

But we cannot only solve this, we can prevent bigger catastrophes, troubles that put in risk the
preservation of the environment. Whenever we dump our food, we lost a big amount of the labor and
natural resources that are used in the elaboration of food, being the last one commonly known as
limited natural resources, such as water, and most of the time, fossil fuels that are used to provide
energy to the different factories that work with food. 40% percent of the food that is produced in the
U.S. never gets eaten (Natural Resources Defense Council). This, of course, brings a lot of
consequences for the environment. Another direct consequence from the food waste is that all the food
that is thrown away with other types of garbage, decomposes without air, which produces high levels
of methane, a greenhouse gas that is even more dangerous than CO2, because it catches even more
heat in the atmosphere than the already mention gas. We can say that this is not only a problem related
to famine, their effects are even deeper that we can

Conflict Between Northern Uganda And The Civil War Essay
When I think about conflict in Northern Uganda, I vividly recall the distant look and aloofness that my
childhood neighbor and friend, Grace, always donned. My primary school was entirely a boarding
school affair. We left the comfort of our parents homes to move to an entirely new community, living
with other children my age, 7 years, sharing, caring and looking out for each other. Yet, deep down,
each of us had their untold story. Grace s story, which she told, piece by piece, a little unsure whether
she could trust me, was different. She talked about one of the biggest and longest conflicts was in
Northern Uganda, a civil war by the Lord s Resistance Army led by Kony .They carried out
widespread abduction, mutilation and kidnapping of children who became child soldiers, sex slaves
and child mothers. Some were civilians with fresh bullet wounds who had been caught in a rebel
ambush; others were land mine victims. Her mother was a nurse at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital,
so she spent most of her childhood at the medical quarters. Each time the ambulance arrived at the
hospital; local residents would rush to the hospital gate to observe in sorrow as dying victims were
rolled into the surgery ward. Watching this daily routine was the beginning of her distrust in humanity
and social withdrawal. I had no help to offer besides a listening ear.
The more she talked about her ordeal, the more she opened up. There was always a glimmer of hope
in her eyes after telling her story.

January 18, 2012
This paper will discuss the principles and position of harm reduction. It will also examine the public
perception of the user, which has created an ineffective philosophy. Most importantly, my paper seeks
to recognize the harm of harm reduction. This discussion will highlight the lack of hope it creates in
the user. Harm reduction needs to be addressed so that a long term solution for the user can be
implemented, not just a quick fix Band Aid solution. If caregivers, counselors and the general public
do not hold more of an abstinence position on recovery they will eventually do users a disservice. I
will touch on needle exchange, safe injection sites, wet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea behind the creation of safe injection sites is that society can t cure or get rid of the drug
problem. While harm reduction may work for those not effected directly with the damages of drug
use, it encourages out of sight, out of mind compartmentalization of people who unconsciously don t
want to help the addict. This results in the addict staying in his addiction. It seems to me that such an
approach is much like facilitating drug use, which is illogical. The fact is we can t stop rape either but
we don t resort to lowering the consequences and give ways to do it. There is a concern that the users
sharing straws to snort cocaine will spread Hep C . So, should we also create a straw exchange
program? There will always be something that will cause harm with drug use.
We also have to ask if we are in line with Canada s Drug Strategy definition of harm reduction, which,
in general, is to lower sickness, death, social misery, crime, violence and economic costs. Has it
reduced the harms associated with alcohol and drugs to individuals, families and communities or is the
drug still in control? Some effects of drugs are too powerful to manage. Paranoia, a common effect of
cocaine use, can cause violent and erratic behavior. Sometimes users experience coke bugs :
imaginary bugs crawling over their skin. Heroin causes euphoria, which is followed quickly by

Essay On Gap Wedge

Title: Best gap wedge
With the short game accounting for more than 50% of shots you play in a round, improving your
wedge play is the first step to shooting a lower score. The wedge is the most important aspect when
playing golf. Acting as the goalkeepers of our game by saving us shots from both turf and sand, golf
wedges come in various lofts, finishes, bounce and grinds to help us get closer to the pin from
anywhere inside of 125 yards. Gap wedges range in loft from 50 to 55 degrees and are a compromise
between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. A gap wedge is particularly critical to use today because
the 5 degree difference in degrees between the SW and PW in the 1960s has now grown to exactly 10
degrees. This has made room for golf club companies to respond by inventing a new club to fill the
gap , and of course, encourage us to buy more products.

Innovation Vs Traditionalism
I am sure that we have all, at one time or another, noticed that almost any discussion concerning the
merits and demerits of art, if it goes on long enough will come to the qualities of innovation and
traditionalism in regards to aesthetic value. As soon as these two qualities are mentioned, there comes
an inevitable forming up of those who favor innovation and deride tradition and those who favor
tradition and deride innovation. Either side usually admits only enough merit to their opposition, and
limitation of their own view, to make themselves seem reasonable and objective: but the bulk of their
effort goes into savaging their opponents and extolling the ultimately ascendant nature of their
position. I am inclined to take neither ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For many people, the most damning denunciation they can make of a work of art is that it is, in some
way, stale, antiquated, or outmoded. They will note how this feature has been borrowed, how that
aspect has been done before, and how the entire work lacks freshness, originality, and creativeness.
These sorts of people are not necessarily wrong for saying such things, but they are wrong for leaving
their criticism at that, for it is simply not enough. What is implied in many of these people s demands
for freshness, originality and so on, though they would never say it explicitly, is a fascination with
novelty. A few, if cornered, might defend a taste for novelty by saying that something, because it is
novel, takes their aesthetic experience beyond where it had been before, and thereby expands their
understanding of art and themselves. There is a grain of truth in this, but a second explanation seems
more likely, and far more damning. If someone displays a taste for art which is novel, it indicates that
art which preceded the novelty possessed only a passing transient value, and art which now seems
novel will also, most likely, be passing and transient, for its only real attraction to this sort of person is
that it is new, and, as we have seen, this will soon pass. However, many of us are inclined to believe
that aesthetic values are something eternal,

Machiavelli And Humanism
While the moral codes of Humanism and Catholicism consider being deceitful to be wrong, from an
amoral perspective, betrayal is unavoidable and comes with its own set of benefits. This is Machiavelli
s view in his 1513 work The Prince, in which he details the complexities of gaining and maintaining
political power to his Italian statesman Lorenzo de Medici, from whom he hopes to regain a political
position after shifts in the unstable Florentine republic. Machiavelli argues that people, particularly
political leaders, should have flexible moral codes so that they can bend them when necessary. For
him, betraying allies or betraying one s own beliefs is acceptable, even beneficial, because it aids in
making tough political decisions to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite Machiavelli s tongue in cheek perspective, his intentions in writing The Prince exemplify the
two faced nature of mankind. During political upset in Florence, the ruling family betrays Machiavelli
himself by temporarily jailing him for treason, stripping him of his political position, and banishing
him. Yet unlike Dante, who is more personally affected by his exile, Machiavelli sees Medici family s
return to power as an opportunity to regain his own position, which is why he hopes to impress
Lorenzo with The Prince. For him, betrayal is more expected under the circumstances, and so he
hopes to play them at their own game. By feigning loyalty and kissing up to Lorenzo, Machiavelli
improves his chances of obtaining power, even though he likely doesn t believe everything he s
saying. For him, his true intentions or beliefs don t matter like with religion and betrayal, his
deceitfulness is a useful political tool in a world of deceitful men. With the sixteenth century
Florentine power struggle and religious tension, it was difficult for anyone to find stability. While
Machiavelli experienced treachery firsthand through being banned from Florence, many Florentines
could relate to a general lack of loyalty. During a time of political turmoil, aspiring leaders would have

In the 1969 case of Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC, Red Lion Broadcasting challenged the fairness
doctrine that the Federal Communication Commission imposed on them in relation to a specific
broadcast. Red Lion Broadcasting Co. aired that program on November 27, 1964, which included a
personal attack on one author Fred J. Cook. Red Lion Broadcasting Co. refused to give Fred J. Cook
his requested free time on air for rebuttal. As a result, the FCC supported Cook and ordered the radio
station to give Cook his time on air for the opportunity to refute the previous negative claims made
against him. The D.C. Circuit of the Court of Appeals subsequently upheld the FCC s decision.

In other words, the doctrine had two requirements, which were a personal attack rule and a political
editorializing rule. The personal attack rule was the portion regarding the right of public figures who
had been attacked during a FCC licensed broadcast to respond to that attack. The political
editorializing rule meant that for any endorsed or opposed candidate that was spoken of on a show,
there must be reply time offered to the unspoken of candidate.
By nature of its requirements, this doctrine was less concerned with the interests of the radio
broadcasters themselves but with the interests of the listening public. Due to limited access to radio
waves the FCC was mainly concerned with public interest in getting fair and balanced information so
that they may be an informed republic and make educated decisions, especially with regard to politics.
The airwaves were a part of the public domain and under regulation of the government and the FCC
did not want the airwaves to become monopolized. Private entities do not necessarily work for the
public interest without incentive. Thus, by law the FCC only renewed broadcast licenses to those radio
stations that complied with the Fairness Doctrine.
The Court ruled on the side of the Defendant, the Federal Communication Commission and it was a
unanimous vote. Justice White wrote for the Court and he wrote that it was not possible to leave radio
waves ungoverned by the fairness doctrine due to the spectrum scarcity. The

What s Going On defined a time in history where social unrest was at it s highest in the black
community. Police brutality was rife. Just like in the USA in 2015, one could argue that this problem
is still extremely prevalent. In the early 1970s, police were racially profiling young black males and
females across the United States. This was witnessed by Ronald Obie Benson who wrote the initial
draft of the piece. Benson proclaimed What is happening here? One question led to another. Why are
they sending kids so far away from their families overseas? Why are they attacking their own children
in the streets? (Lynskey, 2011) Similarly, Gaye was also impacted by the issues of the Vietnam war, in
which his brother spent 3 years overseas like countless other Americans. Gaye reveals I was very
much affected by letters my brother was sending me from Vietnam, as well as the social situation here
at home. I realised that I had to put my own fantasies behind me if I wanted to write songs that would
reach the souls of people. I wanted them to take a look at what was happening in the world. (Buskin,

Disneyland and its Offerings
This is the place where every kid begs to go. This is the place where adults enjoy going also. It s the
place where dreams come true , Disneyland. Located in Anaheim, California, this popular amusement
park is known all over the world for its entertainment, park rides, Disney characters, and so much
more. Here, children laugh and play while adults enjoy tours or spend the day at the spa. Either way,
both parties will experience the time of their lives. There is so much scenery for the eyes to enjoy
here. From the bright lights, to the extravagant decorations, and to the tall castle buildings; its
elaborate factors cease to exist. This is what sets Disneyland apart from its fellow amusement parks.
The park continues to grow with new things each year. There are so many awesome things that
Disneyland rewards us with.
This tourist attraction was founded by Walt Disney in 1955 (Disneyland Amusement Park). When this
amusement park was first created it wasn t like other amusement parks at the time. Unlike traditional
parks, Walt Disney had a vision of not just having rides but making it a place where Disneyland is
known for its entertainment also. Walt Disney was a cartoon genius (Disneyland Amusement Park). A
lot of his works, most popular being Mickey Mouse, were brought into the theme of the park.
Bringing cartoons like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the amusement park brought in joy.
While walking through the park one may encounter costumes of, Tinker Bell and other Disney
characters. For children and adults, seeing these cartoon characters depicted in real life, reminds one
of happier times. This stood as a trademark for Disneyland. An atmosphere of optimism, patriotism,
and fun are three of the many goals Walt Disney set to achieve (Disneyland s History). With this in
mind things needed to be fixed and changes needed to be made. When the parked opened up in 1955,
there were many speculations that the heavy investment Disney put in to the park would not be
beneficial in return (Disneyland Amusement Park). Walt Disney spent a lot of money on his vision.

How Did Hagia Sophia Change Over Time

Constantinople, a great city founded by Constantine the Great, was an advantageous site which lied

Numerous changes befitting a mosque were made to the building.
Islam forbids images and virtual representation of figures. So of course when Hagia Sophia was

Traditionalism In Texas
The United States of America is a country priding itself on providing equal opportunity for the right of
life, liberty, and property. These unalienable rights, according to the Founding Fathers, were not to be
taken away or denied by the American government. Also known as a natural right, the right to life can
be classified as a citizen s right to be protected by the government from abuse or death. Property
classifies the right that a citizen has for owning materialistic items and land for which can be
considered private. Finally, the right of liberty presented in the Constitution for a citizen refers to
many different aspects ranging from freedom of speech and expression, right to bear arms, freedom of
religion, freedom against search and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Texas case served as the tip of the iceberg into advancing the gay rights movement in Texas and
nationwide. Without the case as well as the specific decision made by the Supreme Court, Texas
would still be majorly intolerant, discriminant, and unrepresented by the LGBT community and
supporters. Lawrence and Garner were two men who fought for their love, their privacy, and their
rights, and they came out successfully in the end in turn affecting all of society and many events that
have taken place since 2003. Considering if sodomy laws were still implemented in Texas, an injustice
and unconstitutional hindrance would be in place fostering the traditional culture and conservative
views that are voiced as the majority in Texas. In the past few years, Texas Democrats have voiced
their support of same sex marriage, the next step in the gay rights movement. In 2012 their support
and advocacy in favor of same sex marriage began and it would not have been possible without the
existence of the Lawrence v. Texas case and its six to three ruling declaring the sodomy laws in Texas
unconstitutional. The LGBT community wants what all Americans expect: life, liberty, and property.
The pursuit of happiness is the added bonus as to what they strive for, and it was made possible by the
ruling of the Lawrence v. Texas case in

History Of The Rwanda Genocide
In the country of Rwanda, one of the most infamous events was the genocide that took place in the
spring of 1994. Even though Rwanda was known as a turbulent country already, the rapid pace of the
killings still left people around the world in shock. In the span of just one hundred days over eight
hundred thousand people were slaughtered by their own government. It all started when the death of
the Rwandan president, Juvenal Habyarimana, was announced. A French Judge blamed the Tutsi rebel
leader, Paul Kagame, for the crash. The judge claimed that he and his people carried out the attack on
his plane. Though Kagame continuously blamed Hutu extremists for the attack, his arguments were
pushed aside and the government ruled him guilty. After ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bikini Bottom Marxist Theory
Marx s Bikini Bottom When a child is watching the television show SpongeBob SquarePants, it is
often viewed as an innocent, comical, cartoon about a Sponge and his day to day activities. But later in
life, after learning about Marx s Theory, one can explain the correlation between the two polar
opposites. Marx s Theory is the political and economic philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
in which the concept of class struggle plays a central role in understanding society s allegedly
inevitable development from bourgeois oppression under capitalism to a socialist and ultimately
classless society ( Marxism ). The entire town of Bikini Bottom is exactly how a Marxist City would
be set up, with each level of the social structure demonstrated with different characters in different
classes; poor, middle, and upper.
The lowest class in the today s social structure would be considered the poor, which is often viewed as
lazy, education lacking people who are not willing work in order to move up through the social
structure. Patrick, one of the main characters in SpongeBob SquarePants, presents these views to be
true while he is participating in his role in Bikini Bottom. He has no source of income, does not attend
school, has little belongings and lives under a rock. In episode 13 of season 9 he refers to his
unemployment as funemployment when he tries to convince SpongeBob that he does not need to work
(Hillenburg). Another character displayed is Plankton. He is also

Summary Of IVe Been To The Mountaintop
The day before Martin Luther King Jr s assassination, MLK Jr. spoke at Mason Temple in Memphis,
Tennessee on April 3, 1968 about the Memphis Sanitation Strike. The intention of the speech I ve
Been to the Mountaintop was to convince other African Americans to band together and support the
sanitation workers after two black, garbage collectors died in an accident. The deaths caused others to
realize the unequal treatment of blacks and whites in the workplace. MLK uses ethos, pathos, and
logos to persuade fellow African Americans to band together in a nonviolent movement for the
equalization between races.
Ethos is an appeal to ethics in writing to convince the audience of the speaker s character. In the start
of the speech, King tells about a hypothetical journey through the ages of time. He mentions the Great
Depression and uses the famous words, We have nothing to fear but fear itself. a paraphrased line
from John F. Kennedy s inaugural address. The use of JFK s words gives credibility to King by
mentioning and remembering a popular past President. Another example of King s use of ethos is in
this quote, Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of freedom of speech.
Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right
to protest for right. Martin Luther King Jr. says this because these are all amendments in the
Constitution that were not being applied to African Americans even though these are

Racial Stereotypes About Tattoos
Lives are in the palms of his hands, yet eyes perceive him differently. Hearts keep their steady beats,
yet everlasting whispers envelop him. Minds are at ease when the pleasant news is given, yet his is
roaring with different voices. A medically trained professional, judged because he bears the art of ink
on his flesh. In reality, the appearance of a white lab coat drapes a curtain over the ink that represents
him. Once taken off, a spotlight is shone directly on the area that holds his passion. An excellent
illustration of racial stereotypes is discussed in Crazy Horse Malt Liquor, an article by Michael Dorris
where he acknowledges the various stereotypes that Native Americans face alone, even in the twenty
first century. All these generalizations have wrapped a foot of ribbon and tied a knot on society, even if
it is a mere splat of ink; thus it is my mission to snip a piece of it off. To embark on this journey,
questions have to be asked, and there is one in particular that society has to praise; in what ways does
American culture address stereotypes against tattoos? Tattoos are a source of self expression, and there
are countless of ideas that one can forever ink on their body. There are people whose life story is
captured and told by the inking that scatters their physique, yet there are others who believe this is a
representation of a bad character. When I began digging, I knew that starting off with an individual s
clashing experience with their tattoo would be

Huckleberry Finn from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is described by all the adults as idle and
lawless and vulgar and bad and is hated by all the mothers . Huck really is a good person at heart, but

the life of a widow from a bad man seeking revenge on her because her husband had died. The first
reason Huck in not idle and lawless and vulgar and bad is because he reasonably judges people.
Society in the 1800s tell Huck that african americans are just an object. Huck believes different when
he meets Jake the slave. Jake sleeps in his masters barn and allows Huck to sleep in the barn too. Jake

Summerfest Research Paper
Most people opted not to return to Summerfest on Saturday, given it was July 4th and the smaller
sized audiences were quite noticeable. The weatheron Saturday was just as refreshing as the day
before, and the fact that the festival wasn t at full capacity made it a lot easier to move around to each
show. Despite not having a large crowd, the performers on Saturday put on very memorable shows.
The Avett Brothers headlined Summerfest s Saturday lineup. The band played at the 23,000 seat
Amphitheater, and unfortunately, the venue had a lot of empty seats. To be fair, Summerfest s
Saturday turnout wasn t as big as the day before, but it s a bit surprising more people didn t come and
see the band perform. Avett Brothers played songs such as You and I, The Carpenter, Talk on
Indolence, and True Sadness. They even honored America with a rock rendition of America the
Beautiful. Those people who did not attend The Avett Brothers set, missed out on a great show, which
also featured a performance by Brandi Carlile. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

performance of their biggest hit Slow Ride. The moment the first note of Slow Ride blasted through
the loud speakers, it sent the audience into a frenzy. Any time I get a chance to see Foghat play in the

Individuality In Brave New World
Samay Patel
Ms. Schmidt
Honors English IV Section 2
7 December 2015
The main conflict in Brave New World is individuality versus social stability. The notion of Brave
New World is that one must give up their individuality and fulfill their role in the society for the
greater good which is social stability. The totalitarian government in the novel controls every aspect of
the id, superego, and ego. Aldous Huxley distinguishes each of his characters from the other to portray
the different levels of individuality they display. Through the psychoanalytical perspective, it is
interpreted that the World State dominated the characters throughout the novel. However, Bernard and
John Savage show the readers the individuality aspect of the society ... Show more content on

Although this society is built with unity as stability, it lacks and deprives humans of their happiness
and freedom. All principles of humanity are disregarded and encountered by the Brave New World
society. The society created in Brave New World is everything Huxley did not want the world to
become. Bernard and John the Savage are a direct representation of Huxley. First of all, it is obvious
that Bernard does not fit into the society he lives in. Throughout the novel, Bernard is shown different
from the other Alphas. He possesses low self esteem because he is not able to engage with females as
easily as the other Alphas can, especially in a society where, everyone belongs to everyone else.
Bernard s alienation is a result of mockery from others and his self pity. His physical disabilities take a
toll on him and his insecurities are overtly seen. His self pity and insecurities are handled by him
abstaining from soma and dealing with the emotions he feels. Bernard s disabilities have a direct effect
on his personality. Too little bone and brawn had isolated Bernard from his fellow men, and the sense
of this apartness, being, by all the current standards, a mental

Persuasive Essay On Why Zoos Are Bad For Animals
Zoos are bad for animals. Zoos are all around the world where people like to go to see animals many
people enjoy it, but are zoos really a good place? Zoos are not a healthy natural place for animals to be
kept. They are unhappy and they don t get to experience the natural life they were supposed to live.
Animals have families that the love and know just like humans do we re not put in cages and separated

ways they mistreat the animals.
When animals are taken from their natural habitat, they are placed in secluded cages where their
natural habitat is recreated, to the best of the zoo s abilities. However, certain aspects such as ambient
temperature in an animal s natural habitat cannot be recreated perfectly. Animals live around the world
for a reason, not to be taken away . The main reason is that their natural habitat is associated with a
particular climate and ecosystem is reliant upon all of the natural plants and animals who also share
that habitat. Nocturnal animals are those who sleep during the day and forage during the night. When

Criticism Of John Dryden
On the author s life and work
John Dryden was born in 1631 in a middle class family who supposedly supported the Puritan cause
and Parliament. According to the Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism (2001), he started his
education in Westminster School and continued in Trinity College, Cambridge where he graduated in
1654, (2001). Dryden is known for his poetry, drama, criticism and translations, such as Virgil s
Aeneid, and translations of Homer (The Princeton Encyclopaedia of Poetry and Poetics, 2012).
Dryden s philosophical poetry shows his awareness of fideism, modern science, skepticism, and deism
(Wellek, R Warren, A., 1942). Relying on the Norton Anthology of English Literature (2006), Dryden
s first poem Heroic Stanzas, specifically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dryden himself turned his intention to blank verse, supporting rhyme through the character of
Neander. Crites, on the other hand, criticises rhyme in serious play, it is unnatural since no one speaks
in rhyme. Blank rhyme is also peculiar as nobody speaks in verse. Dryden writes in his Essay: Tis best
to write Tragedy in that kind of Verse which is the least such, or which is nearest Prose: and this
amongst the Ancients was the Iambique, and with us is blank verse (Richter, H. D. 2006).
Words should be placed in a natural order. The Elizabethans mastered the use of blank verse and the
Moderns cannot outshine them. Rhyme adds joy to poetry and since the basic function of poetry is to
delight, rhyme supports to perform this function justly (I. A.Richards., 2001).

  • 2. Lab 1 Nitration Of Naphthalene Nitration of Naphthalene Wed 2/25/2015 Lab report # 1 Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to nitrate naphthalene with nitronium ion, which is formed at low concentration from a reaction of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The percent yield from the experiment was 54.4% of the product, and the melting point of the possible results were 59 °C for 1 nitronaphthalene, and 78°C for 2 nitronaphthalene. Introduction: Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene can be nitrated by the same methods as benzene derivatives, including the well known mixed acid method that utilizes a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The electrophile is the nitronium ion, NO2+, which is formed at low concentration by a reaction of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The solid was then boiled with 10ml of fresh water for 10minutes. The mixture was cooled in ice and the product was collected by vacuum filtration. 0.1 of the crude product was then recrystallized for 5minutes with 5ml of hexane under reflux. The hot solution was filtered using a preheated filtering paper. Crystallization occurred, and then the product was collect by vacuum filtration. The product was dried and the melting and mass were measured of the product, nitro naphthalene. Technology And Social Media s Effect On The People s Privacy We collect the content and other information you provide when you use our Services, including when you sign up for an account, create or share, and message or communicate with others (Hachman). Each day people live with a false security that they are protected and maintain a sense of privacy. Citizens misplace their trust in social media and technology, and divulge their personal information in ignorance of the repercussions that may arise. Users say the advances in technology and social media won t affect the people s privacy; however, it is proven that these advances can be a harbinger of both danger and discontent. Our nation is built upon its foundation from the United States Constitution and its Bill of Rights. Included in this governing document is the Fourth Amendment, the laws and guidelines that gives us the right to privacy. Within in this amendment, it is stated that The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated (gpo). Despite the fact that these right are clearly stated and profound, recent advances is the scopes of technology and social media have violated the people s privacy by deceiving them into thinking they are protected. It is shown that one of the most prominent sources, that prove a danger toward privacy, is through social media, specifically Facebook. • 6. Cis 109 Assignment 3 Logical Design Gregory M Dowell CIS 111 Professor Thakkar 25 February 2014 Logical Design The purpose of normalization is to create a stable set of relations is representative of the operations of an enterprise. By doing this we are able to reduce redundancy to save space and avoid inconsistencies in data. It also ensures that the design is free of certain updates, insertions, and deletion anomalies (Ricardo, 2012). With normalization as with most anything else there are advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of normalization are: ACID, which stands for atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability. Atomicity means the transaction is a single unit. Either the entire set of actions is carried out or is not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This causes an inconsistency in the data since it was only updated in one location and not all locations. Insertion anomalies occur due to the impossibility to store some information unless other information is stored as well. Deletion anomalies are caused by information being deleted that may cause other information to be deleted as well. This means it may not be possible to delete some information without deleting other information as well. That is why it is important to use normalization when creating databases to help alleviate these problems. There are three stages to normalization, 1st NF, 2nd NF, and 3rd NF. In the 1st NF stage must ensure that the table has no multivalued attributes. If there are the table should be broken down into separate tables so that there are no multivalued attributes. The 2nd NF stage requires that we break the tables down even more to ensure that all attributes and functional dependency entirely to the primary key and has met all requirements of the 1st NF. Then, and only then will it be considered to have met 2nd NF requirements. To transform the database to 3rd NF you must identify the primary key in the 2nd NF table. Then we must identify functional dependencies in the relationship to ensure there are no transitive dependencies. These types of dependencies can cause insertion, deletion, and update ... • 7. Relevance Of Study And Scientific Background Relevance of Study and Scientific Background G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are crucial for multiple areas of human physiology including vision, olfaction, taste, hormone control, and neurotransmitter control (1). As a result of its wide spanning functions, it is a popular area of study for therapeutic targets for many diseases (1). GPCRs are composed of seven helices that run through the membrane with parts both inside of the cell and outside of the cell (1). The widely accepted model for GPCRs work is outlined in Figure 1 of this paper (2) and is essential for understanding the rest of the paper. T4 lysozymes (T4L) were added to 2AR to stabilize 2AR Gs. A previous paper referenced by the Kobilka group (3) used this approach to put T4L between TM 5 and TM 6. In it this Science paper, they expressed concern about T4L addition modifying WT 2AR. What they found were minimal differences in the modified 2AR compared to WT (normal antagonist binding and slightly elevated agonist binding) (3). I would have liked to have seen a similar functional comparison done for the WT 2AR compared to the T4L modified 2AR for this paper as well for completeness to ensure T4L addition does not change function. Another problem was the variability in the position of GsAH. A nanobody (Nb35) was bound to the complex to help reduce this variability. As with T4L addition, I would have liked to have seen additional data included to show that the Nb35 addition does not significantly alter the function of the protein complex. While Figure 2c) in the paper shows the structure of the structure of the 2AR Gs complex without the aids, I would have liked to have seen some functional tests performed on the complex, both with the aids for crystallization and without the aids for crystallization. A key result of this paper was finding the structure of the active state of 2AR. To find this, the agonist bound receptor of 2AR Gs was compared to the inactive 2AR. A few differences were noted. Namely, there is a 14 angstrom movement of TM 6 in the active form compared to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Mini-Bestest Evaluation The Mini BESTest Because the administration of the BESTest takes from 45 to 60 minutes, which may not be practical in all clinical settings, a condensed shorter version of the BESTest (Mini BESTest) was created. Through the basis of rash analysis, unnecessary items and 2 sections of the BESTest, biomechanical constrains and stability limits/vertically, were removed to yield the assessment of dynamic balance. The Mini BESTest contains 14 items of the original 36 items from the BESTest. The items on the Mini BESTest are scored on a 3 point scale ranging from (0) to (2). A score of (0) indicates the lowest level of function and a score of (2) indicates the highest level of function, leading to a possible total score of 28 points (Yingyongyudha et al., 2015). In 2015, researchers conducted a study on 79 adults (mean age 68.7) to determine the validity of the BESTest, Mini BESTest and Brief BESTest. The Mini BESTest was repeated again for the 30 participants after 10 days in order to determine its reliability. The results showed a close relationship between scores on the Mini BESTest and the other outcome measures. • 9. Uncertainty In Physics Lab # 1: Measurements and Uncertainty in Physics Experiments 1 4 Dylan Adams Date: June 22, 2016 Abstract: Experiments 1 4 focused on using different types of measuring tools, and the uncertainty that goes on while using these tools. The lab focused on rulers, calipers, spring scales, and stopwatches. Each different type of measurement was analyzed for precision, accuracy, and uncertainty. Students learned how to calculate measurements on a Vernier caliper, by using the least half count. Students also learned the formula that was used to obtain the measurement from a caliper: Lower tick mark value of major scale reading plus the number of least count spaces on the minor scale multiplied by the least count of the minor scale. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As seen in table 1, the caliper was much more accurate than the ruler. This is true because the caliper is much easier to read, and has less uncertainty than the ruler. The caliper has less uncertainty than the ruler because it has the ability to measure at a smaller unit than the ruler. The source of error in this experiment was that the caliper could easily be bent, giving incorrect measurements. In experiment 2 students tested the uncertainty and accuracy of a 5 and 10 N spring scale. As seen in table 2, the 5 N spring scale had less uncertainty than the 10 N spring scale. Because of this, the 5N spring scale was more accurate. The only downfall to the 5N spring scale was that it was not large enough to measure the weight of the modeling clay. In experiment 3, students tested the error and uncertainty of using a stopwatch. As seen in table 3, using a stopwatch gave a large variety of measurements. Since the time it took the marble to fall was so small, it was hard to react quick enough to give accurate readings. Lastly, in experiment 4 students tried to determine the density of the mass set. As seen in table 4, students used the radius, diameter, and height in order to find the volume. Once they found the volume they used the weight of 100 grams in order to find the density. The density of the mass set was found to be 9.03. This value was closest to the density of copper, but the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My first thought when I read this was the realization of where Willy s stress and frustration stems from. The successes of his father and brother in difficult environments emasculates Willy. Although he has a great superiority complex when it comes to others, such as Charley when he comes to visit, when Willy speaks to his brother in a hallucination like state, he acts completely submissive. His brother and father continue to have a strong, dominating hold over him postmortem. My second thought was the realization that this is why Willy is so hard on his children, especially Biff. Willy barely even knew his father, and therefore this grand legend and hero of a man he claims to be his father, may be more a creation of his mind than memory or actuality. Fiction often makes things out to be more grandiose than they actually are. Oftentimes, people tend to glorify what they don t know about or have not experienced in person. Precisely, one example of someone romanticizing what they do not understand is the character Robert Cohn from The Sun Also Rises. Specifically, at the beginning of the story, pages 2 to 3, Robert Cohn romanticizes South America. Like how Willy does not know his father outside of the stories he s heard from his brother, Robert Cohn knows nothing about South America aside from what he read in The Purple Land . Neither of them knows many specific facts, with Robert unknowing of where, IN South America, he desires to travel specifically, and Willy struggling to remember what instrument it was that his father actually played in the few memories he has. This vagueness in understanding enables both of these characters to further romanticize said places or people. All Willy sees is potential perfection; however, in actuality, he scarcely knew the man. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. A Raid On The Oyster Pirates Jack London An autobiographical sketch is when the author writes about their own experience. This is exactly what Jack London does in his story A Raid on the Oyster Pirates . London is very skilled in the art of character development. This explains how he was able to create such developed characters to the point where they almost seem like real people. In A Raid on the Oyster Pirates by Jack London a lot of detail is shown through Charley, Mr. Taft, and Centipede in terms of how they act and speak. Charley is a good friend of the narrator. He can be viewed as very forgiving because of how he treated the oyster pirates after they were caught stealing oysters from Mr. Taft. After the oyster pirates Charley stated, You can dry your clothes here, lads, and get some hot coffee (London). Even after they stole from him and his friends Charley ... In conclusion, in A Raid on the Oyster Pirates by Jack London a lot of detail is shown through Charley, Mr. Taft, and Centipede in terms of how they act and speak. • 16. Food Famine Research Paper Many people might believe that global famine exists nowadays just in extremely poor places of the world and in not so high levels when indeed local level famines have erupted in Sub Saharan Africa, South Asia and parts of Latin America. Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That is about one in nine people on earth and the vast majority of the world s hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is undernourished. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But we cannot only solve this, we can prevent bigger catastrophes, troubles that put in risk the preservation of the environment. Whenever we dump our food, we lost a big amount of the labor and natural resources that are used in the elaboration of food, being the last one commonly known as limited natural resources, such as water, and most of the time, fossil fuels that are used to provide energy to the different factories that work with food. 40% percent of the food that is produced in the U.S. never gets eaten (Natural Resources Defense Council). This, of course, brings a lot of consequences for the environment. Another direct consequence from the food waste is that all the food that is thrown away with other types of garbage, decomposes without air, which produces high levels of methane, a greenhouse gas that is even more dangerous than CO2, because it catches even more heat in the atmosphere than the already mention gas. • 17. Conflict Between Northern Uganda And The Civil War Essay When I think about conflict in Northern Uganda, I vividly recall the distant look and aloofness that my childhood neighbor and friend, Grace, always donned. My primary school was entirely a boarding school affair. We left the comfort of our parents homes to move to an entirely new community, living with other children my age, 7 years, sharing, caring and looking out for each other. Yet, deep down, each of us had their untold story. Grace s story, which she told, piece by piece, a little unsure whether she could trust me, was different. She talked about one of the biggest and longest conflicts was in Northern Uganda, a civil war by the Lord s Resistance Army led by Kony .They carried out widespread abduction, mutilation and kidnapping of children who became child soldiers, sex slaves and child mothers. Some were civilians with fresh bullet wounds who had been caught in a rebel ambush; others were land mine victims. Her mother was a nurse at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, so she spent most of her childhood at the medical quarters. Each time the ambulance arrived at the hospital; local residents would rush to the hospital gate to observe in sorrow as dying victims were rolled into the surgery ward. Watching this daily routine was the beginning of her distrust in humanity and social withdrawal. I had no help to offer besides a listening ear. The more she talked about her ordeal, the more she opened up. There was always a glimmer of hope in her eyes after telling her story. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This results in the addict staying in his addiction. It seems to me that such an approach is much like facilitating drug use, which is illogical. The fact is we can t stop rape either but we don t resort to lowering the consequences and give ways to do it. There is a concern that the users sharing straws to snort cocaine will spread Hep C . So, should we also create a straw exchange program? There will always be something that will cause harm with drug use. Essay On Gap Wedge Goal: Review post Total word count in this document: 1011 Title: Best gap wedge With the short game accounting for more than 50% of shots you play in a round, improving your wedge play is the first step to shooting a lower score. The wedge is the most important aspect when playing golf. Acting as the goalkeepers of our game by saving us shots from both turf and sand, golf wedges come in various lofts, finishes, bounce and grinds to help us get closer to the pin from anywhere inside of 125 yards. Gap wedges range in loft from 50 to 55 degrees and are a compromise between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. A gap wedge is particularly critical to use today because the 5 degree difference in degrees between the SW and PW in the 1960s has now grown to exactly 10 degrees. Innovation Vs Traditionalism I am sure that we have all, at one time or another, noticed that almost any discussion concerning the merits and demerits of art, if it goes on long enough will come to the qualities of innovation and traditionalism in regards to aesthetic value. As soon as these two qualities are mentioned, there comes an inevitable forming up of those who favor innovation and deride tradition and those who favor tradition and deride innovation. For many people, the most damning denunciation they can make of a work of art is that it is, in some way, stale, antiquated, or outmoded. They will note how this feature has been borrowed, how that aspect has been done before, and how the entire work lacks freshness, originality, and creativeness. These sorts of people are not necessarily wrong for saying such things, but they are wrong for leaving their criticism at that, for it is simply not enough. What is implied in many of these people s demands for freshness, originality and so on, though they would never say it explicitly, is a fascination with novelty. A few, if cornered, might defend a taste for novelty by saying that something, because it is novel, takes their aesthetic experience beyond where it had been before, and thereby expands their understanding of art and themselves. There is a grain of truth in this, but a second explanation seems more likely, and far more damning. If someone displays a taste for art which is novel, it indicates that art which preceded the novelty possessed only a passing transient value, and art which now seems novel will also, most likely, be passing and transient, for its only real attraction to this sort of person is that it is new, and, as we have seen, this will soon pass. The personal attack rule was the portion regarding the right of public figures who had been attacked during a FCC licensed broadcast to respond to that attack. The political editorializing rule meant that for any endorsed or opposed candidate that was spoken of on a show, there must be reply time offered to the unspoken of candidate. By nature of its requirements, this doctrine was less concerned with the interests of the radio broadcasters themselves but with the interests of the listening public. Due to limited access to radio waves the FCC was mainly concerned with public interest in getting fair and balanced information so that they may be an informed republic and make educated decisions, especially with regard to politics. Bikini Bottom Marxist Theory Marx s Bikini Bottom When a child is watching the television show SpongeBob SquarePants, it is often viewed as an innocent, comical, cartoon about a Sponge and his day to day activities. But later in life, after learning about Marx s Theory, one can explain the correlation between the two polar opposites. Marx s Theory is the political and economic philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in which the concept of class struggle plays a central role in understanding society s allegedly inevitable development from bourgeois oppression under capitalism to a socialist and ultimately classless society ( Marxism ). The entire town of Bikini Bottom is exactly how a Marxist City would be set up, with each level of the social structure demonstrated with different characters in different classes; poor, middle, and upper. The lowest class in the today s social structure would be considered the poor, which is often viewed as lazy, education lacking people who are not willing work in order to move up through the social structure. Summary Of IVe Been To The Mountaintop The day before Martin Luther King Jr s assassination, MLK Jr. spoke at Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee on April 3, 1968 about the Memphis Sanitation Strike. The intention of the speech I ve Been to the Mountaintop was to convince other African Americans to band together and support the sanitation workers after two black, garbage collectors died in an accident. The deaths caused others to realize the unequal treatment of blacks and whites in the workplace. MLK uses ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade fellow African Americans to band together in a nonviolent movement for the equalization between races. Ethos is an appeal to ethics in writing to convince the audience of the speaker s character. In the start of the speech, King tells about a hypothetical journey through the ages of time. He mentions the Great Depression and uses the famous words, We have nothing to fear but fear itself. a paraphrased line from John F. Kennedy s inaugural address. The use of JFK s words gives credibility to King by mentioning and remembering a popular past President. Another example of King s use of ethos is in this quote, Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press.
