Essay on America s Crime Fighters Need DNA Fingerprinting
America s Crime Fighters Need DNA Fingerprinting
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a chemical structure containing a base sequence. Base pairs are
genetic codes made up of four chemicals (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Thymine) and each
sequence differs in every person. Because DNA is so complex and varies immensely in individuals, it
can be used like a fingerprint, hence the name DNA Fingerprinting. DNA can be found and analyzed
in blood, semen, saliva, hair and skin even decades old if properly stored. The process takes longer
than simple fingerprinting and is very expensive, but the results are almost perfect in determining
identity. While these tests are very accurate, there is a 1 in 50 billion chance that two people ... Show

Department of Justice. Today DNA testing is used regularly to convict criminals as fingerprints have
in the past. The Department of Justice states that in 1998, the FBI created the National DNA Index
System (NDIS), which currently links 42 states. Today there are genetic profiles for more than one
million criminals stored in this database, and soon all 50 states are expected to participate in the NDIS.
That is a great example of an effective use of DNA Fingerprinting and security.
Previously used only in research labs, DNA fingerprinting has become more common to the public.
Although mostly used for paternity testing, DNA profiling is reliable enough as evidence that
prosecutors are relying on it more and more to help convict suspects in criminal cases. One specific
example occurred in Goldsboro, North Carolina. A man known as the Night Stalker had committed
offenses of rape in 1990 to three elderly women. Each incident resulted in an attempt to murder the
victim; however, only two lost their lives along with one husband. One woman was fortunately saved
by the unusually early arrival of her daughter. The suspect planned to burn the residence to hide the
crime, but panicked and ran, leaving behind substantial evidence. A matching pap smear was taken
from each victim to cross reference DNA samples, but no suspect was known. This is where the NDIS
came into effect, adding a profile to North Carolina s database. After 10 years of

Dear Minister Sushri Uma Bharti,
My name is Vynateya Purimetla, and I am an eighth grader currently attending East Hills Middle
School, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Presently, we are in a hydrogeology unit and we have been
researching global water crises around the world and the effects they have on people who inhabit those
regions. I am writing this letter to address the issues of inadequate sanitation, untreated sewage in
groundwater, and holy rivers being polluted due to a host of reasons. These problems are occurring in
both rural and urban areas, and are affecting more than 80% of the Indian population who depend on
water polluted with untreated sewage, nitrate, and agricultural runoff for basic survival needs, (The
Huffington Post). As the leader of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development Ganga
Rejuvenation, I hope that some of the solutions outlined in this letter could be helpful to you in
solving India s water crisis.
A problem that affects the daily life of more than a hundred million people is inadequate sanitation
and a lack of proper sanitation facilities. For example, only 87% of Indians in urban areas have access
to a sanitized latrine, while only 33% of Indians in rural areas have access to a toilet, (The Guardian).
This statistic is alarming, as it increases the susceptibility to diseases such as

The Work And Paintings Of Jacob Lawrence
For my research paper, I will be studying the work and paintings of Jacob Lawrence. Jacob Lawrence
was an American painter and was very highly commended African American artist of the 20 century.
What he is best known for is his Migration Series. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on
September 7, 1917. When he was the age of two his mother deposited him and his two younger
siblings in foster care in Philadelphia after his parents divorced. When he was thirteen he went to work
in New York City and there he went to join his mother. He also spent fifteen years teaching as a
professor at the University of Washington. Lawrence was also widely known for producing narrative
collections such as the Migration Series and War Series. Shortly after Lawrence had arrived there, he
was introduced to art when his mother had enrolled him in Utopia Children s Center, which then had
an after school art program. At the age of 16 he dropped out of school and took classes at the Harlem
Art Workshop where it was taught by Charles Ashton and he very often visited the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. In 1937, he won a scholarship to the American Artist School in New York. When he
graduated in 1939 he had received funding from the Works Progress Administration Federal Art
Project. By that time, he had already established his own type of modernism and that is then when he
began to create his narrative series; where he would paint about 30 paintings or more for that one
subject. In 1941, he had

Difference Between Bollywood And Nollywood
Introduction:
The two industries that I have chosen to research is the Film industry is of Indian film industry,
Bollywood, and the Film industry Nigeria, Nollywood. Both Film industries are one of the biggest
industries in the world, creating thousands of films a year. The two directors to come out of the
countries as some of the best directors in the respected countries and the world are Kabor Khan, from
the Bollywood industry who is presently one of the most sought after Bollywood directors. And
Andrew Dosunmu who is a Nigeria Director and had gained much support in the US after directing

Bollywood:
The Indian film industry started its journey in 1899 when the first Indian silent film was shot and sent
to be processed in the UK. The film was shot by Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar (also known
as Save Dada) who became intrigued by the art in 1896 when the Lumiere brothers sent over short

Their Eyes Were Watching God Chapter 6 Summary
Chapter 6 of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Hurston starts out by describing how
Janie detests running the store, but also how she finds some joy in listening to the bright stories the
townsfolk have on the porch. The guys there like to tease Matt Bonner a man with an overworked
good for nothing mule. Jody, regardless of Janie s wonderment in the stories, forbids her from
hanginging out with the trashy people out on the porch. Because of the men who constantly are
entranced by Janie s hair, Jody commands her to wear a head rag around her head due to his
overgrown jealousy. One day Matt Bonner s mule runs away and ends up outside of the store, where
some townsmen are torturing it for their own amusement. Janie does not like this and mutters her
disapproval, Jody hears her and decides to buy the mule for five dollars so it can finally be at peace.
After the mule finally dies, Jody has a mock funeral which turns into a town wide gathering, none of
which Janie is allowed to attend to. Later on at the store, Janie and Jody get into an argument where
she tells him that he is no fun, and he tells her that he is just trying to be responsible. As time goes on
the indignation that Janie holds for Jody only grows stronger. One day, Jody slaps Janie after seven
years of having met each other after a treacherous dinner. Later that same day, Mrs. Robbins begs
Jody for a little meat for her family which Jody spares. The men on the porch talk crudely about the

Literary Analysis Of Ambush, By Tim O Brien
We all make mistakes that we later regret, but that s life. We need to focus more on just accepting to
live with it.
Living with regret. Ambush Literary Analysis
Tim O Brien, a fighter affected by the trauma Vietnam War held, divulge on his participations when
his daughter asks herself if he has ever taken a man s life. At nine years old, nearly 20 years after the
Vietnam War is over, Kathleen asks her father a question. Has he ever killed someone, she wants to
know. O Brien decides to tell her that he has not killed a man. It felt like the right thing to do ; he
thinks when she is a little older she will understand better. Maybe then O Brien will tell her about the
slender young man who still consumes him, whom he still ponders about when reading the newspaper.
Mr. O Brien briefly relives the night in My Khe. He had been on lookout after midnight. He saw the

O Brien acknowledges that he has lied to his own daughter. Again he is drawing attention to the nature
of the story as a story that he decided to tell, rather than something that is essentially true. This is
meant to put the reader on his or her guide against false sources, and unreliable guides to the war. But
O Brien also disputes the notion that there is a stable truth to be found. He views a story s content as
changeable. He writes:
It was a difficult moment, but I did what seemed right, which was to say, Of course not, and then to
take her onto my lap and hold her for a while. Someday, I hope she ll ask again. (129) The difficulty
for O Brien is double pronged. He must decide whether or not to lie to his daughter. He must also
relive and come face to face to a deeply traumatic event. The title is an ironic double entendre. O
Brien ambushed the soldier with a grenade and Kathleen ambushed her father with a wrenching
question. O Brien killed the soldier, and Kathleen threw her father into moral

We Are All Frogs Or Cows By Anne Fadim The Spirit Catches...
Introduction We are all frogs or cows; we wander through life in a state of perpetual bafflement
because empathy is so hard harder than anger, harder than pity (Fadiman, 1988, p. 300). An individual
living in a foreign country has a big challenge to face, particularly the new rules and laws that they
must follow to be considered a good neighbor. The book of Anne Fadiman: The spirit catches you and
you fall down is about the struggles of the Hmong family from Laos who had a child (Lia) that
suffered from intractable epilepsy. Her parents have a difficult time adjusting to the American society
particularly the language barriers, cultural impediments and the US health care physicians. As a result,
multiple medical mistakes, uncertain decision making and ultimately caused harm to Lia. Should
physicians be more compassionate and take the time to understand their patients coming from a
different culture? Should cross communication be taught to the doctors to improve the dissemination
of information? These are some of the questions that I will attempt to explain as well as answer in this
midterm assignment.
Reflections on the book (Did you like the book? Why or why not?) After reading the first few chapters
of this book, I was not entirely immersed in the story. I find it tough to understand particularly the
birthing traditions of the Hmong and how they believe in the evil spirits dabs. As I progress to the
pages, I started to understand the difficulty that the

Meridian
To be independent is to be without limitation and free of civilization, all the while, the thought of
being free of civilization, without limitation is overwhelmingly wild. In the novel Meridian, by Alice
Walker, the short presence of a character addressed as The Wild Child symbolizes the theme of self
awareness and pursuing one s life independently. Alice walker uses the short presence of The Wild
Child as an influential factor when developing her main character Meridian. The use of characters
from Meridian s ancestry, such as Feather Mae (Meridian s great grandmother) and inanimate objects,
such as The Sojourner (tree), further support the theme that The Wild Child represents. Notably, Alice
Walker writes her Meridian through a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As an activist against racism and a person of whom secludes herself from others, Meridian lives as an
outcast within society trying to avoid the judgement passed by people, just as The Wild Child does.
This shows both Meridian and The Wild Child s sense of self identity and independence in the way
that they realize that they would rather be separated from society and go about things in their own
way, the only way that they know. Although The Wild Child makes only a brief appearance within the
novel, Alice Walker makes her intentions of this character evident by supporting the theme of self
awareness and independence that The Wild Child represents with other characters and objects. Feather
Mae, Meridian s great grandmother is made out to also be a person of free will, who is far reachinging
and of an eccentric nature. Feather Mae is a woman whoabandons all religion not founded on physical
ecstasy and later results to worshiping the sun while walking around naked. This is just as Meridian
renounced religion at an early age in her life because she had not experienced any type of ecstasy in
trying to become devoted to Jesus. Just as The Wild Child lived content in her own ways of surviving,
both of these exceptional women, Meridian and Feather Mae, endure life in their own idealistic way.
Walker also emphasises the importance of the rather large

is caused by captivity itself (Ventre 1 ). Many institutions that hold orcas claim to be preserving the

deal with than wild orcas. Consequently, the animals quality of life is reduced to following trainer
demands in fear of the repercussion.
For instance, chimpanzees that are used in famous movies like the Planet of the Apes movies will
often start their career very early on in their life. As a consequence these animals are subject to
physical and mental abuse.
Performing chimpanzees are taken from their mothers at a very young age. This causes tremendous
emotional and psychological distress to the mother as well as to the infant. Trainers frequently use fear
and physical discipline to control their apes and the degree of force increases as the apes grow. This
continues until they re about 8 years old and too dangerous to work with.
However, even after they are retired, film chimpanzees have no guarantee that their way of living will
be restored. Some chimpanzees are lucky and placed in sanctuaries where they will be able to enjoy
the rest of their lives roaming a large enclosure while others do not share the same fate and end up
breeding for the next generation of film chimpanzees or in poorly

The Power of Rebuilding
Warwood was still in shambles, and normal kingdom life had been suspended until essential repairs
were completed. Since Xavier couldn t physically lift and move things due to his injured hand, his
father had assigned him to one of his most trusted friends, General Loren Hardcastle, who was
organizing telekinetic citizens. Today, their task was to clear out rubble and assist masons and
construction workers in rebuilding the gatehouse, which had been demolished during the initial
onslaught of LeMasters invasion.
Rebuilding of the gatehouse would be a simple task and Xavier was looking forward to doing
something constructive, regardless of how tedious or boring it might become. Although his powers
could be intense at times, he felt confident that he had a secure command over them and could
summon them without difficulty. He didn t like to brag, but there were few kids in the kingdom who
could rival his empowerment level and strength.
However, there was one power that still proved challenging for Xavier: that of impediment. He
struggled to block telepathic advances, especially when faced with a strong, capable telepath. His
confrontation with William LeMasters only punctuated this deficiency. Although he had made gains in
impediment and could, at times, hoodwink Uncle Mike, his father was a different matter altogether.
The king was the most powerful telepathic alive. For this reason, when the new school term began,
Uncle Mike would no longer be teaching him telepathy; his

Japan s Attack on Pearl Harbour Essay
Japan s Attack on Pearl Harbour
In December 1941, Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese. It was the consequence of a series of
events which brought tension between Japan and America to boiling point. Japan was a country
growing in power and stature and America soon came to realise that this growth could prove a threat
to them. America aimed to stop Japan s growth in its tracks as they realised that if the situation was
left to evolve much longer then the situation may be out of their control. However, it can be argued
that by not seriously dealing with this threat until the 1940 s, America had left things too late and
faced an opponent who would not back down.

At the Washington Conferences in 1921, America reasoned with the Japanese government and decided
that Japan s naval bases and naval arms would be limited. For every 5 ships that America had, Japan
would be allowed a maximum of 3. Although Japan agreed, they still aimed to expand more so that
they could become one of the major world powers.
The Great Depression in America hit Japan with force. Japan was affected because America s trade
was vital to Japan s survival. Trade with America became limited and Japans economic prosperity was
at risk. Japan needed more imports. The army decided on a militaristic option and seized Manchuria,
as it had rich supplies of raw materials such as coal, iron ore, timber and rice. They believed that by
expanding, Japan could become more powerful. As Japanese troops were already stationed in
Manchuria, it proved an easy target for the Japanese. The Americans, focusing on their own needs, did
not interfere with the seizing of Manchuria. This proved to be a bad decision for them as their trade
links with China were badly affected, but more importantly Because of the success in Manchuria the
military gained power. The public became more enthusiastic and supportive of militaristic
nationalism. This led to the military running the government by the late 1930s as many people

To Kill A Mockingbird Friendship Analysis
The definition of friendship is the state of being a person attached to another by feelings of affection
or personal regard (dictionary.com). In Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird, friendship drives the
interactions between the main characters that live in Maycomb, Alabama. Miss Maudie Atkinson, a
neighbor whom is kind to the children; Jem, Scout s older brother; and Arthur Radley, a neighbor
whom rarely comes out of his house and is kind, all have a friendship with Scout in different ways that
grows throughout the novel.
Miss Maudie and Scout have a friendship that starts very small at the beginning and progressively
grows throughout the novel. Dill and Jem play together and exclude Scout. She does not want to do
what they are doing and be reminded that she is not like them because she is a girl. Scout spends time
with Miss Maudie, a neighbor, on pain of being called a girl, I spent most of the remaining twilights
that summer sitting with Miss Maudie Atkinson on her front porch (Lee 42), instead of playing with
the boys. Miss Maudie and Scout spend a lot of time together. Miss Maudie treats Scout like she is an
equal to her and not a child. Scout enjoys spending time with Miss Maudie and it makes her feel like
she is still a tomboy. Miss Maudie bakes cakes for the children often and Scout always receives her
own little cake. When she finishes eating the cake, Miss Maudie and her have a conversation. Scout

Essay about The Globalization of Child Labor
Globalization of an idea or practice can be very beneficial worldwide, but globalization can also effect
countries and people negatively. Child labor was once an immense issue in the United States;
however, we now have laws protecting children from dangerous working conditions. Unfortunately,
children in countries like India and Africa are still falling victim to harsh working conditions. These
developing nations have the same problem that the United States had years ago; children are working
long hours with little pay and are working in very dangerous environments. India and Africa have
industries that are growing rapidly, but because these nations are so poor, they have to rely on children
to do most of the work because it is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was the start of child labor issues in the United States. To help support the family, every available
family member had to become employed, and the children had the worst working conditions out of
anyone. They often worked ten to fourteen hours a day with usually no breaks during work shifts.
Rural families also thought it was in their best interest to move to the city. Unfortunately, the children
in rural areas also went through most of the same conditions. They worked long hours just like the
factory children, and they also were not supervised as much, so there was more of a possibility for
things to go wrong (Rich). The main problem with this is the obvious problem; this is mistreatment
towards the youth and extremely dangerous and unfair. Fortunately, the rest of the country thought the
same way and laws were put in place. According to Child Labor Public Education Project, between
the years of 1918 and 1926, Child Labor laws were passed that protected children. Children with non
agricultural jobs that have hazardous situations and tasks have to be at least eighteen years old. For
agricultural employment with hazardous situations the minimum age was set at sixteen years of age
(Harkin).
Another issue surrounding child labor in the United States was children were not getting an education
because he or she was always working. Children

Technology In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is a product of the era of its conception. Originally published in 1818, the
novel found itself released at the height of the Industrial Revolution. During this tumultuous time
period, many nations and peoples found themselves witnesses the dawn of a new era and a new way of
life. Industrialization brought with it the possibility and promise of a simplified and more efficient
way of living. But with such bold potentialities came the fear of going forth into the unknown. Shelley
s Frankenstein is a response to the new technological advances seen in her life and is a cautionary tale
about boldly going in the new industrious age. In Frankenstein, Shelly creates a narrative of a man
throwing caution to the wind with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the world we live in we see many examples of human s working towards combating the limited
existence we have on this Earth. The field of medicine has greatly benefited the quality and longevity
of human life. In this way, the facet of Frankenstein s pursuit for circumventing death is present in
today s world as we are seeing people being able to live longer and healthier lives thanks to advances
in medicine and the medical field. But Shelley did not create Frankenstein as a character entrenched in
the search of a longer life, but rather to be able to hold the reins of existence and to create life itself.
Shelley is clear with her stance on the idea of mankind attempting to supersede a creator and become
creators of life themselves. Frankenstein is seen as being greatly affected by his creation and the very
nature of his actions. After the creation of his monster, Frankenstein is stricken with illness: I passed
the night wretchedly. Sometimes my pulse beat so quickly and hardly that I felt the palpitation of
every artery; at others, I nearly sank to the ground through languor and extreme weakness (Shelley p.
36). This is Shelley presenting the idea that should a person perform such an act as to create an
abomination of life that they would be going against such an innate tendency of humans. And in doing
so, their own body would react to such aberration that they would be wracked with physical torment.

Analysis Of Tuesdays With Morrie
An old man, a young man, and life s greatest lesson may be the most prominent understatement of the
book Tuesdays with Morrie. In reality, the book is about a wise old man fighting a lethal disease,
known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Lou Gehrig s disease, teaching a young man life s
greatest lessons during meetings that always take place on Tuesdays. Morrie Schwartz is the old man
with the fatal disease and life s greatest lessons to teach, and Mitch Albom is the young man who
becomes the student once again in his old professor s study. One might make the argument that Mitch
got the most out of the Tuesday meetings, however Morrie attained more from each of his last
fourteen Tuesdays spent with Mitch. To begin, Morrie got the most out of the Tuesday meetings with
Mitch as Morrie was able to spend his last days sharing what he loved to do with someone he loved.
Morrie devoted his life to teaching, and he even stated himself, I decided what I wanted on my
tombstone... A Teacher to the Last (134). It is only fair that Morrie spent his last days teaching
something he would love to do to his death meaningful life lessons that would have countless impacts
on millions of lives besides Mitch s. In addition, Morrie so loved Mitch that he went as far as to say, If
I could have had another son, I would have liked it to be you (168). It is impossible to measure how
much love was in Morrie s heart for Mitch after they had first reunited in sixteen years and in the

Main Themes Of The Prince By Machiavelli
1. Machiavelli wrote The Prince because he wanted to give Lorenzo The Magnificent, a book that
highlights major keys to being a Prince and being one efficiently. Also, The Prince was written
because to gain endeavor by the prince it is customary to give him something a person holds most
valuable, Machiavelli held his knowledge most valuable.
2. The way Governments are Established and Held , is a theme in The Prince. Machiavelli says, The
dominions thus acquired have either been previously accustomed to the rule of another prince, or else
have been free states, and they are annexed either by force of arms of the prince himself, or of other,
or else fall to him by good fortune or special ability. , he then further explains this topic in the next
nine chapters. Another one of the major themes is War . Machiavelli explains how to use the methods
of offense and defense in a war if a princes foundation is stable for four chapters. Finally, Reputation
is a theme of The Prince. Throughout the last twelve chapters Machiavelli explains how you should
act to keep in favor of your citizens.
3. The role of armies is to maintain its country s defense through fortifications. This ensures security
and stops enemies from attacking a prince s country.
4. Machiavelli s advice is more realistic. He writes the real truth of the matter than to its imagination ,
compared to other writers that have, have imagined republics and principalities which have never been
seen or known to exist in reality .
5. Machiavelli says it is better for a prince to be both feared and loved, because men will love at free
will and fear at the will of their prince, but a prince must rely solely on his power that he already has.
It is possible for a prince to be both. A prince could show love by giving constant support for many of
the citizens of his country, but should also be feared because he should give consequences to citizens
who do not follow the rules of the country.
6. Conspiracy, a prince should not worry about conspiracies when people are well, but when people
are hostile, he should fear conspiracies. Merit, a prince should show merit, and honor those who excel.
Goodness, a prince should gain

Decision To Use The Atomic Bomb
The Decision To Use The Atomic Bomb The decision by Americans to use the atomic bomb in
Hiroshima and Nagasaki created a controversial debate that has refused to end. At the same time, it
has led to a hostile relationship between USA and Japan since atomic bombing took place in 1945.
Many people have been asking questions whether it was necessary to use the atomic bomb against
Japanese, especially after it led to massive loss of lives of innocent civilians. Another controversial
question is whether the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led the end of WW II by forcing
Japan to surrender (Alperovitz 3). There are some people who support the action by America to use
the atomic bomb against Japan while there are those who oppose the decision. ... Show more content

The US government was insensitive to the plight of innocent civilians who were powerless. It seems
the US did not even time to assess the collateral damage that was associated with the use of the atomic
bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The main focus of the US government defeated the Japanese and to
end the war. In addition, it seemed that the decision to drop atomic bomb was also meant to scare
Russians than to end WW II. Based on Alperovitz s argument, the US was scared by the Soviet Union

The Branches of the US Government
The structure of the United States Government created by the founding fathers is a foundation that
holds the country together. It has gathered the trust of the American citizens and used it to make
decisions that make America a better nation. The government is made up of three main branches, the
Legislative branch, the Executive branch, and the Judicial branch. The branches are vital to America s
social and political integrity and the organization is considered one of the most unique forms of
government in the world today. The three branches work together to face and solve the problems that

This is because the population of the United States has grown, and also because the viewpoints of
those populations has changed overtime as different generations come into power that have different
ideas for the country. When the government was first founded there was a population of 3,513,183
people in the United States. The government was formed to compensate the growth of the country, but
they stopped putting more people into the House when they reached 435 in 1917. If they had
continued putting representatives in for every 50,000 people as they were before there would be about
6,000 people in the House. The ratio used to be one representative for every 50,000 citizens, but now
it is one for every 710,676 citizen (Members of Congress Questions and Answers). This gives the
people less input because there are less representatives to state their opinions. Although more of the
representatives are more diverse both by gender and ethnicity.
When first created, the Legislative branch had a lot of power, as a result a system to keep the power in

Essay on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an unknown author in the 14th century, can be called a
timeless work of poetry. It exudes a certain fantastic quality that, despite its age of over 500 years, still
appeals to modern audiences. Because of this application to all eras, would it be reasonable to state
that this poem could be classified with modern fantasy fiction? Because of the similarities in plot and
style with so much modern fantasy, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight could be placed in the same
category with that genre, though the uses of doing so are questionable.
In plot, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight has elements which are similar to much modern ... Show

From when the Green Knight is beheaded and proceeds to pick up his head, give a wicked grin, and
say essentially, I ll see you in a year, (ll. 423 456) it is clear that magic will play in integral part in the
narrative. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446 2462) finishes the plot as it
began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy, particularly
from writers of modern fairy tales. Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have essentially made
their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White, Blood Red and its
several follow ups. To increase the fairy tale style feel of the story, the Green Knight is called an elf
(ll. 680, 2461) and faery. (l. 240) There is clear indication that this can easily be called a fairy tale.
Stylistically, the visual and concrete nature of the poem lends itself to modern comparison as well. The
delightful accounts of the changing of the seasons are in part to indicate the passage of time, but also
add mood to the whole of the piece. Present day fantasy writer Patricia McKillip has been critically
lauded for lush imagery and stories described as atmospheric... and filled with rich imagery. Clearly
the descriptions are an important part of the style that makes modern

Before leaving the farm, he asked the farmer what the trailers were used for. The farmer told him that

threw him to the ground. Just when he thought that was it, the second package went off, filling the
garage with a loud rumbling, and a light brighter than the sun. This explosion blew out the windows.
This chain of events continued with a third and final explosion Causing his ear drums to pop, and his
lungs to fill with the aroma of freshly lit gunpowder, Audi was left gasping for air. After this series of
events took place he stood up, scratched his head, and started laughing. At that moment his wife Judy

his mistake had created. Then he finished his job of sharpening the blades and mowing the yard. Life

Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants, By Ernest Hemingway
Hills Like White Elephants is the epitome of Ernest Hemingway s legendarily concise writing.
Comprised of basically only dialogue, the story forces its audience to deduce themes from
microscopic shifts in the conversation between the girl and the American . Through this meticulous
diction, as well as through the use of powerful symbolism, Hills Like White Elephants encapsulates a
recurring theme in Hemingway s works: the superiority of men due to the emotional and dependent
nature of women. Following a short introduction that establishes the scene in Spain, the story opens
with two main characters in a bar. Hemingway describes the surrounding landscape as long and white
with no shade and no trees (1). After ordering drinks, the female character looks off into this brown
and dry terrain and notes that the contrastingly pale hills look like white elephants (1). The man
quickly responds I ve never seen one, to which she answers No, you wouldn t have (1). From this
exchange, it can be inferred that the white hills represent something beyond face value, something that
only the woman can understand and interpret. As the story progresses, their conversation begins to
revolve around an operation (3), and suddenly a possible symbolism of the hills appears: the
representation of the emotional and physicals repercussions of abortion. The hills convey the fear that
women have following the procedure about infertility, death, and loss. These hills are so important,

Traditional and Nontraditional Forms of Litigation
Traditional and Nontraditional Forms of Litigation In every business of today, every business and
organization needs legal assistance. Yet, the types of legal assistance might not always be the same,
depending on the individual industry and situational analysis of the business in question. This is a
comparison of traditional and nontraditional litigation services that are often used by contemporary
businesses, with special attention paid to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). First, to understand
the newer, nontraditional forms of litigation it is imperative to set up a sound foundation for
understanding the more traditional forms of litigation. Essentially, traditional litigation is the process
of going to court to handle disputes of both business and civil matters. As such, litigation is the
traditional process, whereby both parties use the court system and procedures to resolve their dispute
(Lewis, 2012). Here, legal advice and representation is provided by lawyers who act on behalf of the
parties involved in the dispute. In this traditional form, the parties can not talk to each other at all
during the context of the dispute process. In contrast to the more traditional styles of litigation,
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is much different. Essentially, this more alternative style to
approaching litigation needs aims to resolve disputes before they have to actually go through the
expensive and complicated process of litigation. Here the research claims that

Geometry Standards
During my level two s I was in a first grade classroom and I had a wonderful experience teaching at
Orchard Hill Elementary, I grew to love teaching first grade. My mother was also a preschool teacher
and my aunt was a kindergarten teacher, so I have always had a passion for teaching lower elementary.
I think first grade would be the perfect classroom to teach, because that is when students are starting to
become less dependent on help from the teacher. Students are still at the age where they love going to
school and are excited to learn. Also, I can empower them to keep having a love of learning for years
to come. Students in first grade are starting to develop their critical thinking and problem solving
skills, so this is very important when it comes to math. I plan on staying in Iowa to teach, so I am
going to be discussing how geometry can be taught in a first grade classroom. Then, I will discuss
how to implement the standards in a first grade classroom. Then, I will discuss briefly how the Iowa
Core and the Common Core compare in geometry standards and also describe the three Iowa Core
standards for geometry. As well as, explaining the Van Hiele levels and what level first graders should

Organizational Justice
2.1 Theory Organization justice plays a very important role in employee motivation, loyalty, and well
being (Mc Shane et al, 2013). To minimize the feeling of injustice, corporate leaders have to
understand well of the concepts, theory and forms of organization justice (Mc Shane et al, 2013).
There are three different but overlapping forms of organization justice, which are: Procedural
Organizational Justice, Interactional Organizational Justice and Distributive Organizational Justice (
Elovainio et al, 2002). 2.1.1 Procedural organizational justice: According to Oxford Dictionary,
procedure refers to an established or official way of doing something . Procedural justice is the idea of
fairness in the processes of resolving disputes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the justifications provided to people that express information about why procedures were used in
a certain way or why outcomes were distributed in a certain fashion (Muzumdar). The perceived level
of informational justice is higher when more sufficiency of explanations are disclosed (Fricchione,
2006). Informational justice shows the transparency in the procedures adopted to accomplish certain
judgment or result (Muzumdar). The second part is called as interpersonal justice which referring to
the respect and dignity with which one treats another (Colquitt et al, 2001). It is how a person is being
treated by his supervisors, subordinates or others (Muzumdar). Treatment by a supervisor is defined as
respect, dignity, motivation, encouragement and so on. Since interactional justice emphasizes one to
one transactions, employees frequently seek it from their supervisors. This creates an opportunity for
the organizations to train union leaders to behave more justly (Skarlicki et al, 1996). They were taught
to give explanations and apologies (informational justice) and to treat their reports with courtesy and
respect (interpersonal justice) Leaders of an organization have to behave in a particular manner in
order to influence their subordinates to enhance productivity (Karris, n.d). For example, individuals
who reported to trained leaders revealed more helpful citizenship

The Negative Consequences Of Stereotyping
Stereotyping is to treat or classify a person, place, or thing according to a mental idea or conception.
This concept has been inherited every generation throughout life. Everyone knows right from wrong,
but when stereotyping comes into play, it s acceptable. Stereotyping negatively affects the lives of
those who judge along with those who are judged. Within a couple readings and videos portraying
stereotypes, I have begun to realize why people continue to assort things into groups. My outcome is
that people judge directly off what they see, then they begin to understand the truth to it.
To begin with, the reason we continue to use stereotypes are to make one feel better about themselves.
One person s thoughts has the power to influence anyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, in the film Crash, a newbie cop who meant no harm towards black people or anyone in
general ends up killing one in cold blood. This occurred because of his experiences with his partner
who illegally treated civilians without respect only because of the color of their skin. Due to his acts,
the new cop, off patrol, shot a black hitchhiker when pulling out a christian figurine from his pocket
thinking it was a firearm. Stereotyping is mainly influential. Imagine growing up without hearing
certain people are bad or stink or are smart even. Stereotypes aren t always bad, but they still criticize
all aspects of people. Influential judgement continues thus, giving a nickname to all walks of life. The
film Crash shows that most forms of stereotypes are based upon discrimination among diverse races.
To sum up, diversity plays a big role within stereotyping. If one does not look, talk, or walk like the
rest, they are poorly judged and treated without morality. Furthermore, prejudism has caused much
distrust in all neighborhoods in the world as we can see from the above authors and the film, Crash.
Stereotyping has formed many other types of inequal prejudism amongst all ages that are very difficult
to take back. From this, many mishaps have occurred from judging, however we still go through life

The First Confiscation Act Of September 1862
With this knowledge Congress passed Major General Benjamin F. Butler quick thinking into a policy,
the First Confiscation Act, in August of 1861 which stated that the federal government had authority to
seize any property owned by the Confederates which included slaves. By March the following year, an
Article of War was produced which prohibited any military or naval services from returning run away
or fugitive slaves to their respective masters, nullifying the Fugitive Acts all together. When the
Second Confiscation Act was announced in July of 1862 it declared forever free Confederate owned
slaves who made their way to federal lines or who resided in rebellious territory that fell to federal
forces (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Also in the bill, was the legitimisation of the president to utilise
persons of African descent in any way that he considered necessary and proper for the suppression of
the rebellion (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Thus the Militia Act of July 1862, which gave Lincoln carte
blanche (Luke and Smith 2014, 14) to make use of black resources. Although these acts were issued
with the intention of blacks serving as military labour it gave way to many possibilities. The first to
act on these possibilities was Major General Jon C. Frémont, in August 1861, who emancipated the
slaves of Missouri rebels. By late August, following him, but surpassing freeing slaves, Republican
U.S. senator and brigadier general James H. Jim Lane, a Free Soiler and

Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut
Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut Section I On October 23, 1983, a massive explosion
from a 19 ton truck full of explosives attacked military barracks and killed 241 servicemen (including
220 U.S. Marines) in Beirut, Lebanon. The blast was the biggest known non nuclear explosion since
World War II and was the bloodiest day since Iowa Jima, according to Rick Hampson writing in USA
Today. The Marines had been sent to Lebanon as peace keepers, trying to bring some peace to a civil
war that was ongoing in Lebanon. Military observers subsequent to that horrific event have suggested
that this terrorist assault was the beginning of the reign of terror that radical Islamic would continue to
perpetrate on Americans through the next twenty years. Hampson explains that the bloody attack on
American servicemen was ...a seminal moment on a timeline that led to the 9/11 attacks, to the war the
U.S. waged in Afghanistan (Hampson, 2008). Moreover, Hampson notes that this attack drove the
U.S. out of Lebanon but more than that, if led people like Osama bin Laden to ...conclude that when
America gets its nose bloodied, it pulls back (Hampson, p. 1). Previous to this attack the Cold War era
was a time when the greatest enemy of the U.S. was Soviet communism; but following the attack,
there were new and extremely dangerous enemies such as al Qaeda, Hezbollah, the Taliban and Iran,
Hampson continues. This paper reviews the reasons for the U.S. presence in Beirut, the

Women In The Office
The Office is an award winning sitcom about a humorous outtake on modern day office life. (NBC)
Each documentary style episode portrays different situations in the workplace. In episode fifteen of
season two called Boys and Girls focuses on a common problem in the workplace, gender gaps.
Gender and different minority s issues have been a problem in the business industry for many years.
Women are treated differently for many reasons such as stereotypes and perceptions. (Modaff, Butler,
Dewine, 2012) In the boys and girls episode a women s seminar is being held in the office. First, I will
be talking about the behaviors presented in the seminar. The women were circled around a conference
room, all calmly listening to Jan, One of the women from corporate, held the seminar. Jan felt like the
office needed to have an all women s conference to talk about issues with women and the workplace.
The behaviors that were taken place in the seminar were not surprising. The women were joking
around and not taking the seminar seriously. Jan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the positive for having a seminar is stated in the episode. Jan states that they use seminars to
help find women who might be a good attribute to the corporate life. When women are given the
opportunity to move up in a company is always going to be a positive. Another positive is confidence
building. The seminar in The Office episode was not the best example of a women s seminar but they
can be very helpful to women. Women are allowed to speak their minds freely and express their
feelings and challenges they face in the workplace. Women can also gain trust and better
communication in other women the workplace for a better workplace environment. The seminars can
really help women learn about themselves and about women in general in the workplace. A negative
outcome is women not gaining any insight from the special

Compare And Contrast Reagan And Kennedy
Two past presidents of the United States leading America through tough times and crisis . Ronald
Reagan and John F. Kennedy were two of the most significant leaders in America. Kennedy and
Reagan were very popular presidents. When Reagan took office he got shot but it didn t kill him.
Reagan had a lot of integrity in his personal life where Kennedy didn t. Reagan was faithful to his
wife while Kennedy ran around with other women. They were both powerful communicators. Reagan
had a greater impact because of the way that he spoke he was able to articulate conservatism in a way
that nobody else was able to do. Reagan and Kennedy both led presidencies that were compelling and
significant.

Kennedy was a democrat. Ronald Reagan s vice president was George H. W. Bush for both of Ronald
Reagan s terms. Ronald Reagan once said, The most terrifying words in the English language are: I m
from the government and I m here to help . I found it particularly interesting that he said this because
he was the president of the United States and he still had no faith in the government. John F. Kennedy
did not have a vice president. John F. Kennedy once said, As we express our gratitude, we must never
forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them . I liked this quote from
Kennedy because it says we should never fear things too much to the point where we can t appreciate
them. Ronald Reagan was married twice, first married to Jane Wyman and then he was married to
Nancy Reagan. John F. Kennedy was married once to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for ten years since
he was assassinated. They had four children together; John F. Kennedy Junior, Arabella, Caroline, and
Patrick. John F. Kennedy was also known to be called by the name Jack . Together Ronald Reagan and
John F. Kennedy impacted America in multiple ways in their time

Washington Wizards Business Analysis
The Washington Wizards are one of thirty NBA organizations, and they were founded in 1961. In
1961, they were known as the Chicago Packers before switching their name to the Zephyrs the
following season. Starting in 1963, they moved to Baltimore and were known as the Bullets. They
landed in Washington in 1973 74 as the Capital Bullets and became known as the Washington Bullets
in 1974 75. They kept the Bullets name until 1997 when they became the Washington Wizards (
Wizards History, Online). The Wizards won one NBA championship in the 1977 78 season when they
defeated the Seattle SuperSonics as the Bullets. The organization has been owned by Ted Leonsis
since June 2010 as part of Monumental Sports Entertainment, which also owns and operates the
Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, the Verizon Center, and the Washington Valor ( Wizards
History, Online). Since January of 2016 I have interned for the Wizards organization in their
basketball operations department. Although I believe the organization runs a smooth operation, there
are certain aspects that call for improvement. The Wizards had ... Show more content on

the Wizards basketball operations staff is already small. Thus, with the departures of front office
members, there is room to add a couple coordinators for basketball analytics. The organization should
look to hire individuals who have strong economic, programming, and analytical backgrounds to the
organization. I would advise that the organization simply hire two or three individuals currently, and
potentially expand the department in the

  • 2. Essay on America s Crime Fighters Need DNA Fingerprinting America s Crime Fighters Need DNA Fingerprinting Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a chemical structure containing a base sequence. Base pairs are genetic codes made up of four chemicals (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Thymine) and each sequence differs in every person. Because DNA is so complex and varies immensely in individuals, it can be used like a fingerprint, hence the name DNA Fingerprinting. DNA can be found and analyzed in blood, semen, saliva, hair and skin even decades old if properly stored. The process takes longer than simple fingerprinting and is very expensive, but the results are almost perfect in determining identity. While these tests are very accurate, there is a 1 in 50 billion chance that two people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Department of Justice. Today DNA testing is used regularly to convict criminals as fingerprints have in the past. The Department of Justice states that in 1998, the FBI created the National DNA Index System (NDIS), which currently links 42 states. Today there are genetic profiles for more than one million criminals stored in this database, and soon all 50 states are expected to participate in the NDIS. That is a great example of an effective use of DNA Fingerprinting and security. Previously used only in research labs, DNA fingerprinting has become more common to the public. Although mostly used for paternity testing, DNA profiling is reliable enough as evidence that prosecutors are relying on it more and more to help convict suspects in criminal cases. One specific example occurred in Goldsboro, North Carolina. A man known as the Night Stalker had committed offenses of rape in 1990 to three elderly women. Each incident resulted in an attempt to murder the victim; however, only two lost their lives along with one husband. One woman was fortunately saved by the unusually early arrival of her daughter. The suspect planned to burn the residence to hide the crime, but panicked and ran, leaving behind substantial evidence. A matching pap smear was taken from each victim to cross reference DNA samples, but no suspect was known. This is where the NDIS came into effect, adding a profile to North Carolina s database. Presently, we are in a hydrogeology unit and we have been researching global water crises around the world and the effects they have on people who inhabit those regions. I am writing this letter to address the issues of inadequate sanitation, untreated sewage in groundwater, and holy rivers being polluted due to a host of reasons. These problems are occurring in both rural and urban areas, and are affecting more than 80% of the Indian population who depend on water polluted with untreated sewage, nitrate, and agricultural runoff for basic survival needs, (The Huffington Post). As the leader of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development Ganga Rejuvenation, I hope that some of the solutions outlined in this letter could be helpful to you in solving India s water crisis. A problem that affects the daily life of more than a hundred million people is inadequate sanitation and a lack of proper sanitation facilities. For example, only 87% of Indians in urban areas have access to a sanitized latrine, while only 33% of Indians in rural areas have access to a toilet, (The Guardian). When he was the age of two his mother deposited him and his two younger siblings in foster care in Philadelphia after his parents divorced. When he was thirteen he went to work in New York City and there he went to join his mother. He also spent fifteen years teaching as a professor at the University of Washington. Lawrence was also widely known for producing narrative collections such as the Migration Series and War Series. Shortly after Lawrence had arrived there, he was introduced to art when his mother had enrolled him in Utopia Children s Center, which then had an after school art program. At the age of 16 he dropped out of school and took classes at the Harlem Art Workshop where it was taught by Charles Ashton and he very often visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1937, he won a scholarship to the American Artist School in New York. When he graduated in 1939 he had received funding from the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project. The guys there like to tease Matt Bonner a man with an overworked good for nothing mule. Jody, regardless of Janie s wonderment in the stories, forbids her from hanginging out with the trashy people out on the porch. Because of the men who constantly are entranced by Janie s hair, Jody commands her to wear a head rag around her head due to his overgrown jealousy. One day Matt Bonner s mule runs away and ends up outside of the store, where some townsmen are torturing it for their own amusement. Janie does not like this and mutters her disapproval, Jody hears her and decides to buy the mule for five dollars so it can finally be at peace. After the mule finally dies, Jody has a mock funeral which turns into a town wide gathering, none of which Janie is allowed to attend to. Later on at the store, Janie and Jody get into an argument where she tells him that he is no fun, and he tells her that he is just trying to be responsible. As time goes on the indignation that Janie holds for Jody only grows stronger. One day, Jody slaps Janie after seven years of having met each other after a treacherous dinner. Later that same day, Mrs. Robbins begs Jody for a little meat for her family which Jody spares. The men on the porch talk crudely about the woman, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction We are all frogs or cows; we wander through life in a state of perpetual bafflement because empathy is so hard harder than anger, harder than pity (Fadiman, 1988, p. 300). An individual living in a foreign country has a big challenge to face, particularly the new rules and laws that they must follow to be considered a good neighbor. The book of Anne Fadiman: The spirit catches you and you fall down is about the struggles of the Hmong family from Laos who had a child (Lia) that suffered from intractable epilepsy. Her parents have a difficult time adjusting to the American society particularly the language barriers, cultural impediments and the US health care physicians. As a result, multiple medical mistakes, uncertain decision making and ultimately caused harm to Lia. Should physicians be more compassionate and take the time to understand their patients coming from a different culture? Should cross communication be taught to the doctors to improve the dissemination of information? Machiavelli says, The dominions thus acquired have either been previously accustomed to the rule of another prince, or else have been free states, and they are annexed either by force of arms of the prince himself, or of other, or else fall to him by good fortune or special ability. , he then further explains this topic in the next nine chapters. Another one of the major themes is War . Machiavelli explains how to use the methods of offense and defense in a war if a princes foundation is stable for four chapters. Finally, Reputation is a theme of The Prince. Throughout the last twelve chapters Machiavelli explains how you should act to keep in favor of your citizens. 3. The role of armies is to maintain its country s defense through fortifications. This ensures security and stops enemies from attacking a prince s country. 4. Machiavelli s advice is more realistic. He writes the real truth of the matter than to its imagination , compared to other writers that have, have imagined republics and principalities which have never been seen or known to exist in reality . 5. • 27. Essay on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an unknown author in the 14th century, can be called a timeless work of poetry. It exudes a certain fantastic quality that, despite its age of over 500 years, still appeals to modern audiences. Because of this application to all eras, would it be reasonable to state that this poem could be classified with modern fantasy fiction? Because of the similarities in plot and style with so much modern fantasy, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight could be placed in the same category with that genre, though the uses of doing so are questionable. From when the Green Knight is beheaded and proceeds to pick up his head, give a wicked grin, and say essentially, I ll see you in a year, (ll. 423 456) it is clear that magic will play in integral part in the narrative. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446 2462) finishes the plot as it began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy, particularly from writers of modern fairy tales. Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have essentially made their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White, Blood Red and its several follow ups. To increase the fairy tale style feel of the story, the Green Knight is called an elf (ll. 680, 2461) and faery. (l. 240) There is clear indication that this can easily be called a fairy tale. Stylistically, the visual and concrete nature of the poem lends itself to modern comparison as well. The delightful accounts of the changing of the seasons are in part to indicate the passage of time, but also add mood to the whole of the piece. • 34. Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants, By Ernest Hemingway Hills Like White Elephants is the epitome of Ernest Hemingway s legendarily concise writing. Comprised of basically only dialogue, the story forces its audience to deduce themes from microscopic shifts in the conversation between the girl and the American . Through this meticulous diction, as well as through the use of powerful symbolism, Hills Like White Elephants encapsulates a recurring theme in Hemingway s works: the superiority of men due to the emotional and dependent nature of women. Following a short introduction that establishes the scene in Spain, the story opens with two main characters in a bar. Hemingway describes the surrounding landscape as long and white with no shade and no trees (1). After ordering drinks, the female character looks off into this brown and dry terrain and notes that the contrastingly pale hills look like white elephants (1). The man quickly responds I ve never seen one, to which she answers No, you wouldn t have (1). From this exchange, it can be inferred that the white hills represent something beyond face value, something that only the woman can understand and interpret. As the story progresses, their conversation begins to revolve around an operation (3), and suddenly a possible symbolism of the hills appears: the representation of the emotional and physicals repercussions of abortion. The hills convey the fear that women have following the procedure about infertility, death, and loss. These hills are so important, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yet, the types of legal assistance might not always be the same, depending on the individual industry and situational analysis of the business in question. This is a comparison of traditional and nontraditional litigation services that are often used by contemporary businesses, with special attention paid to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). First, to understand the newer, nontraditional forms of litigation it is imperative to set up a sound foundation for understanding the more traditional forms of litigation. Essentially, traditional litigation is the process of going to court to handle disputes of both business and civil matters. As such, litigation is the traditional process, whereby both parties use the court system and procedures to resolve their dispute (Lewis, 2012). Here, legal advice and representation is provided by lawyers who act on behalf of the parties involved in the dispute. In this traditional form, the parties can not talk to each other at all during the context of the dispute process. In contrast to the more traditional styles of litigation, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is much different. Butler quick thinking into a policy, the First Confiscation Act, in August of 1861 which stated that the federal government had authority to seize any property owned by the Confederates which included slaves. By March the following year, an Article of War was produced which prohibited any military or naval services from returning run away or fugitive slaves to their respective masters, nullifying the Fugitive Acts all together. When the Second Confiscation Act was announced in July of 1862 it declared forever free Confederate owned slaves who made their way to federal lines or who resided in rebellious territory that fell to federal forces (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Also in the bill, was the legitimisation of the president to utilise persons of African descent in any way that he considered necessary and proper for the suppression of the rebellion (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Thus the Militia Act of July 1862, which gave Lincoln carte blanche (Luke and Smith 2014, 14) to make use of black resources. Although these acts were issued with the intention of blacks serving as military labour it gave way to many possibilities. The first to act on these possibilities was Major General Jon C. Frémont, in August 1861, who emancipated the slaves of Missouri rebels. By late August, following him, but surpassing freeing slaves, Republican U.S. senator and brigadier general James H. Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut Attack on the Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut Section I On October 23, 1983, a massive explosion from a 19 ton truck full of explosives attacked military barracks and killed 241 servicemen (including 220 U.S. Marines) in Beirut, Lebanon. The blast was the biggest known non nuclear explosion since World War II and was the bloodiest day since Iowa Jima, according to Rick Hampson writing in USA Today. The Marines had been sent to Lebanon as peace keepers, trying to bring some peace to a civil war that was ongoing in Lebanon. Military observers subsequent to that horrific event have suggested that this terrorist assault was the beginning of the reign of terror that radical Islamic would continue to perpetrate on Americans through the next twenty years. Hampson explains that the bloody attack on American servicemen was ...a seminal moment on a timeline that led to the 9/11 attacks, to the war the U.S. waged in Afghanistan (Hampson, 2008). Moreover, Hampson notes that this attack drove the U.S. out of Lebanon but more than that, if led people like Osama bin Laden to ...conclude that when America gets its nose bloodied, it pulls back (Hampson, p. 1).
