2. The Role Of Media And Its Effect On The Nature Of Information
The Role of Media
Media is the main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the internet)
regarded as collectively (The Oxford Dictionary). It brings information readily; thus, play an
important role in our society. Although vital arteries of information, these media have built in
biases that distort the facts (Lewis, 2007, p.267).
Media is affected by a number of factors that affect the nature of information received. These
include but not limited to constraints of space and time, market share, advertisers, private
ownership, recognizing bias, and the internet. As a result, media can be deceptive. These are
examples of why media can be deceptive: ownership, advertising, official sources, flak, and

So, filmmaker Mark Achbar asks, what type of person would a corporation be? The evidence,
according to such political activists as Noam Chomsky and filmmaker Michael Moore and
company heads like carpet magnate Ray Anderson, points to a bad one, as the film aims to expose
IBM s Nazi ties and these large businesses exploitation of human rights .
The argument of this film is that the corporation is considered a legal person with no conscience and
is assigned attributes that suggest that it has a psychopathic nature. This assertion was confirmed
when the corporation exhibits all of the characteristics of a psychopath. According to the
documentary, these traits include:
Callous unconcern for the feelings of others.
Incapacity to maintain enduring relations.
Reckless disregard for the safety of others.
Deceitfulness: repeated lying and conning others for profit.
Incapacity to experience guilt.
Failure to comply with social norms with respect to lawful behaviours. (approx. 18 40 min)
The extent to which the validity of the argument emerge is displayed by the corporation when it
display self interested, deceitful, and willing to break the law to get its way; unable to feel guilt,
and yet able to mimic caring and altruism (approx. 40 42 min; Yamey, 2004, para. 7). The
corporation is viewed as a monster and is a result of modern capitalist. The film does not suggest

3. Comparing Einstein, Hitchcock, And Irving Berlin
Many immigrants across the country have contributed to making the society we are familiar with
today. They have helped in small and big ways. Albert Einstein, Alfred Hitchcock, and Irving Berlin
are just three of the most famous immigrants that have made the biggest differences in various
ways. Immigrants have positively impacted science, music, and technology in many ways in the
United States. Immigrants like Albert Einstein have forever changed how we learn science.
Einstein has provided evidence for the atomic theory, and he proposed the special theory of
relativity, wave theory, and photon theory (Goldenstern 51) (Anirudh). In Einstein s special theory
of relativity, Einstein says that space and time are linked together. According to Elizabeth Howell,
...as an object approaches the speed of light, its mass becomes infinite and it is unable to go any
faster than light travels. He the first to accurately determine the size of atoms and prove their
existence (Anirudh). If he was never able to do that, our learning experience would be very
different. Experimentalists were then able to count the number of atoms in an element under a
microscope (Anirudh).
Additionally, as of now, Einstein s general theory of relativity is the most precise model of motion
at any speed. The genius scientist made a unified explanation of spacetime. ... Show more content

DOES TV HAVE A NEGATД°VE Д°NFLUENCE ON SOCД°ETY
The negative effects of television are huge. To minimize the potential negative effects of television,
it s important to understand what the impact of television can be on children.
Violence
Over the past two decades, hundreds of studies have examined how violent programming on TV
affects children and young people. While a direct cause and effect link is difficult to establish,
there is a growing consensus that some children may be vulnerable to violent images and messages.
Researchers have identified three potential responses to media violence in children: * Increased
fear also known as the mean and scary world syndrome

* Television watching also promotes lack of creativity and enhances passivity. The child shies
away from mental and physical workout. * The sense of relaxation that kids feel while watching
television diminishes completely when it is switched off. This makes them watch TV for
longer periods of time and makes them addicted to it * Television viewing creates the concept of
gender role and racial stereotypes in children, as they start considering it as very natural
phenomena. Heroic acts are expected out of males, while women are displayed as objects and
less powerful. * For teens, television is a major source of information about sex. A survey
conducted in 1997 by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 61 per cent of young teens, ages
13 15, rated entertainment media as their top source of information on sexuality and sex health.
This should concern parents because although two thirds of TV shows contain sexual content,
only one in ten includes any reference to safe sex or the consequences of unprotected sex. * The
main focus of many teen dramas is sex, with each episode containing countless verbal and visual
references to sexual activity. These highly sexualized portrayals of relationships bear little
resemblance to the real lives of teens and are generally not balanced by clear messages about safe
and healthy attitudes towards sex.

8. What Is the Role of the Judiciary in a Democracy
Democracy is a system of governance, its origins dates back to Greece and ancient Athens between
421 and 322 B.C. Most Western countries changed their system of governance to a representative
democracy in the 19th century, mostly influenced by liberalism. Democracy, in Greek, means
Power to the People . In this system people vote for their president, choose from different parties. In
an authoritarian state, all powers are in the hand of one person, whereas in a democratic state,
different institutions are in charge of different powers. The government owns the executive, the
parliament the legislative and the judges the judiciary. The task of the judiciary is to settle conflicts

The application of the law may be a bit confused sometimes. For example, does a crime blamed
on a person really correspond to the definition of the crime such as we find it on the law? Are the
proofs given really acceptable? If yes, are the punishments planed by the law adapted with the
crime? Those are the kind of decision that the judge has to take, and it is very important that
judges stay independent from the rest of the government, as it is his main role in the democracy,
the impartiality. That is what we are going to study in the second part. In this second part we
will study the role of the judiciary in a Democracy. First of all, the judiciary is neutral. A judge
doesn t show his belonging to any political parties. He judges the crimes trying to be as neutral as
he can. In a democracy this neutrality is very important as neither the government nor any other
parties can affect the judgement. The judiciary is also independent in most of the countries. It
doesn t depend on the executive or the legislative. However, their collaboration is necessary for
the well being of a democracy. The legislative makes the law that the judiciary will apply on court,
but this law needs to be accepted by the judges so they can apply it in the best conditions. This
independency is very important. In fact, the judges don t owe anything to members of the executive

9. The Argument From The Sanctity Of Human Life
The moral response would be to save the child. One could only imagine that it would be in the
child s best interest to save their life. It would then be considered immoral not to save the child,
because then the child might drown, and therefore die. There are two arguments that back this
response and they are: The Argument That We Should Save as Many as We Can, and also the
Argument from the Sanctity of HumanLife. The Argument That We Should Save as Many as We
Can is straight forward. Life is precious, and thus it should be valued in the same way. The girl

12. Scientific Revolution Dbq Essay
Tits
The Scientific Revolution of the fifteen and sixteen hundreds heralded the progression towards a
new era of rational and mathematical thinking. Instead of relying on the ideas of the ancient Greeks
as Renaissance philosophers did, the contributors of the Scientific Revolution began to look to the
world around them for answers. The scientists and philosophers of the sixteenth and seventeenth
centuries were surrounded by an amalgam of social, political, and religious factors that would
influence the method in which they introduced their theories and findings to the world. These
factors often supported and promoted the growth of the Sciences, but only when they adhered to the
motives of a higher power. Oftentimes, scientific inquiry was suppressed by powerful forces

These institutions, such as the Royal Society of London, were prominent social institutions that

importance of friendship and communication within the scientific domain. These societies were
vital to the survival and expansion of sciences and a great aid to the investigation and elucidation
of the truth (Doc. 6). However, the immense cultural and social influence of the institutions of
sharing did not include everyone. Women were blocked from nearly any form of scientific
experiment or inquiry. Margaret Cavendish, an English natural philosopher and the first woman to
visit a meeting of the Royal Society, illustrates the disregard of the female sex in sciences (Doc. 9).

13. Analysis Of 911 By Michael Burke
Hero. A word that has 7.442 billion different definitions and or examples. An author named
Michael Burke; a writer for the Wall Street Journal, writes to persuade wealthy people who have
a strong influence on the daily world to recognize a problem that happens yearly on a single
date.9/11. First responders or better known as the heros of 9/11 were sent to a different location to
watch their own ceremony at ground zero, all while congressmen sit and take their seats at the real
ceremony. This all arises due to the upcoming 10th anniversary of 9/11. He builds his argument
through the use of organization and pathos.
First and foremost, it was thought that Mr. Burke would never get his his point across. This is
what makes his organization so important. Burke drags his thesis out to three quarter of the

Yorkers and visitors from out of town attended there hundreds of memorial services across the

Question 2 As a response to angry and frustrated citizens at the fact that nothing had been in
President Barack Obama s first two years in office, James Madison, author of Federalist 10 and 51,
would argue that the government was created by the Framers to be virtually unable to get anything
done, and if he had gotten anything done, the government was not working correctly. A president is
not the supreme leader of a country, therefore the Constitutiondesigns a system separation of powers
and the implementation of checks and balances limit their ability to exert their free will on the
people. During the discussion of the ratification of the Constitution, a major fear on the minds of
the Framers was that of tyranny. James Madisondescribes the two types of tyranny that were
feared, that of the majority and that of the elite. Tyranny of the majority is when a majority of a
population has a view this not held by all, however, because they are the majority, their voice is
listened to and the minority s voice is suppressed. Tyranny of the elite is the opposite of the
majority, and was the fear that the government would use its power to control and abuse the people,
rather than help the people. As one of the Framers of the Constitution, James Madison was in
support of the ratification. As a means to urge the public to persuade their representatives to vote
for the ratification of the Constitution, he addressed the people of New York in Federalist 10,

Part A
Question 1:
The article suggests some fishermen choose piracy as an alternative to fishing during adverse
weather conditions. The table below lists some of the marginal costs and benefits to fisherman
during the adverse weather conditions. As shown above, not all cost can be measured in monetary
value. Implicit costs such as opportunity costs are also considered as these are important in order to
determine the economic profit.
Piracy has far more monetary benefits than fishing during the adverse weather as suggested in the
table. Furthermore, the marginal costs of piracy are mostly based to threats/expectations, while the
marginal costs of fishing are mostly based on facts. Hence it can be said that piracy has more
marginal benefits than fishing during the adverse weather, which causes an increase in piracy.

As for the use of space, Hassam creates the illusion that there is three dimensional space in this
work. By making the buildings, trees, and people all appear to grow smaller in the background
creates the illusion of a deep space, which in turn allows the painting to feel more realistic. The
artist makes all of the objects that are closer up (or larger), to remain the focus because the
farther away the other objects appear, the more they become blurred and indecipherable . Often
times, this is how our eyes perceive things in reality as well, so this illusion successfully gives the
work a more natural, three dimensional feel. Another element used in this work that really stands

The insanity defense was first used by U.S. Congressman Daniel Sickles of New York in 1859
after he had killed his wife s lover, Philip Barton Key. The insanity defense asserts that a criminal
defendant should not be found guilty due to the defendant s insanity, but insanity in this context
refers to a very specific dysfunction. The theory behind the defense is that a person who is insane
lacks the intent required to perform a criminal act because the person either does not know that the
act is wrong or cannot control his or her actions even when the person understands that the act is

Shumey was tried for murder in the second degree, and his trial cost the county of San Luis

However, this does not account for fees the plaintiff had to pay to ensure a fair evaluation of the

Multiple trials have exceeded Shumey s in psychiatric fees including the Crockwell case which
accumulated just under twenty thousand dollars and the Brandon Woody case which accumulated
over thirty one thousand dollars (Pemberton). The insanity defense accumulates an absurd amount

To go along with such a drastic increase in trial costs, the insanity defense only accounts for a
minuscule number of trials while having an even lower success rate. While the rates may vary from
state to state, on average less than one defendant in every one hundred actually raises the insanity

22. Children Having A Television On Children
One major concern is children having a television placed in their own bedroom; parents can often
find it is easier for their child to have this amenity in their own room as this can keep them
entertained whilst the parents find themselves in a busy position. Nonetheless, with this, we do not
know what content the child is being exposed to, whether this is violence, sexual or information not
suitable for children to be watching, children who stay up after their bedtime are more commonly
able to access this. However although this is a big factor in children engaging in unsuitable
content, the figures are of the number of children with a TV in their bedroom has declined since
2005, from 71% of 8 11s and 75% of 12 15s to 49% of 8 11s and 60% of 12 15s according to
OFCOM 2015. (OFCOM 2015, Van Evra; 2004)
The World Health Organization defines that Violence is the intentional use of physical force or
power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community,
which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm,
maldevelopment, or deprivation (WHO 2015.) Acts like this can be seen through various children s
television programmes, from programmes with real life people and also cartoon characters.

also Ninja Turtles, these all promote violence to children. It is studied that through television by the

23. Physics of Firearms Essay
Shooting is a popular activity and it is enjoyed by many people, so much so that it is also done at
a competitive level. Although many people may have shot a firearm of some sort, few of those
people actually realize how much physics is involved with the shot.
So what exactly is Ballistics? Ballistics is the science or study of the motion of projectiles and in
the case of most firearms, these projectiles are the bullets. There are two things that affect the
flight of a bullet once it has been shot out of the gun. These things are the drag of air on the bullet
and the force of gravity acting upon the bullet.
The force of gravity acting upon the bullet is always in a constant direction, which is down, at a
rate of 9.81m/s^2. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sectional density, in metric units, is calculated by multiplying the bullet weight in grams by 1.422,
then dividing this by the caliber, in millimeters, squared.
So what affect does sectional density have on the bullets trajectory? Sectional density is the number
that states the bullets ability to retain it s velocity. In other words, the higher the sectional density
value is, the flatter the trajectory of the bullet will be.
After the sectional density, next there is the shape of the bullet that affects its trajectory. The
number that is related to the shape of the bullets is called the Ballistic Coefficient (BC).
So how does the ballistic coefficient affect the bullet s trajectory? The BC is the ability for the
bullet to go through the air or it s air resistance. The higher the BC, the easier it is for the bullet to
travel through the air.
If one bullet has a ballistic coefficient of .273, and another bullet has a ballistic coefficient of .623,
this difference in the two BC values is due to the shape of the bullet. The rounded tip of the one
bullet has a harder time moving through the air than the other sharply tipped bullet.
So what other physics are involved in shooting a firearm? Energy! When a bullet is fired, it has a
huge amount of kinetic energy. This can be calculated using the formula F=MA. That is, the force,
F, is calculated with M, which is the mass of the bullet, times it s acceleration, A.

25. Western Legal Tradition And Religion
Western Legal Tradition, as coined by Harold J. Berman, is the explicit set of legal aggregates,
principles, and theories that are related to the idiosyncratic, reputable culture of Western Europe,
envisioned as an articulate tradition, capable of maturing over an extended period. Dating back to
the 11th century in Western Europe, legality began maturing exponentially, in terms of legal and
religious thought through the outlet of revolutions and religious movements that impacted them,
such as the religiously inspired Papal Revolution of the 11th and 13th century. Individuals studying
this philosophy today have come to question whether the three factors religion, law, and the
movements/insurgencies were equally vital, fundamental, and collaborating... Show more content on

Through the religious outlets, mainly the religiously inspired, Papal revolution that occurred in the
11th century, the tradition was established and formed its everlasting mark on the legal system.1
The movement under Gregory VII was based on how the Church was founded by God, and the Pope
was delegated the task of implementing all individuals in a society where divine law is the only
law and is seen as the supreme ruler over the region, since he is an official of God on earth. During
this movement, occurring from 1075 1122, the Pope and his followers tried to maintain the Bishop
of Rome as the sole ruler of the Church, while preventing the control of kings over the ministry,
which caused the Roman Catholic Church to form the first Western Legal System, a self
determining system of administration and law that would maintain its ecclesiastical roots. The
primary distinction between this legal system and all of those prior to it is that it stood by and
against the domain of the secular monarchies. Even though the clerical did not advocate most of
the holy, religious responsibilities rulers had, the church understood the need to have sectors in
secular governments.3 This reform s spiritual basis was its main concern in terms of the ruler and
system of law of the era. The creation of scriptural policies (e.g., Atonement and the Last
Judgment) resulted in establishing Canon law, which is a major element of Western Legal
Tradition and has affected the way individuals view legality, including how individuals viewed and
dealt with issues such as criminal issues.2 The use of the revolution as a form of dividing the
religious and secular dimension of Western Europe, and its systematization and rationalizing, were

The Relation of Evil and Love in Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
This study will examine Emily Bronte s novel Wuthering Heights, focusing on how evil is related to
love. The study will explore the main relationship in the book, the relationship between Heathcliff
and Catherine. That relationship is full of both love and evil and will show us what happens when
evil and love become tied to one another. The first thing we need to do is define evil. It is perhaps
impossible to define love in a way, which will satisfy all of us. We will probably all agree that
love is usually an attraction between two people, which makes them feel good about themselves
and the other person and about life in general. On the other hand, the love that ... Show more content

That is what Bronte s novel shows us and reminds us about this kind of powerful, romantic love.
It does not get out of control in the case of these two lovers, and becomes evil. Heathcliff is
shown to be a dark and even hateful character the moment we meet him on the first two pages of
the book. Lockwood sees himself as a kind of kin to Heathcliff, and sees the region as a fit for heir
dark personalities. A perfect misanthropist s Heaven and Mr. Heathcliff and I are such a suitable
pair to divide the desolation between us. A capital fellow! He little imagined how my heart warmed
towards him when I beheld his black eyes withdraw so suspiciously under their brows (45).
Lockwood has no idea how much more dark and evil Heathcliff is. Heathcliff is shown to be an evil
man even before he meets Catherine, so we cannot say that he learned to be evil because of his
extreme love for Catherine. We see Heathcliff not as a loving person, not as a lover, but as a hater,
a misanthrope, or a person who hates people. This might be a clue helping us to understand the evil
part of Heathcliff s love. Perhaps a love for one person, which grows out of a hatred of all other
people, will end up being evil, sooner or later. Perhaps true love leads a person to feel warm and
loving toward all people, or most people. And perhaps a love, which is evil, is one, which comes

cadmium (Cd) included in plastic and the electric wire film material, etc. promptly. The elements
range that can be measured is from sodium (Na) to uranium (U). Liquid nitrogen cooling for the
high performance detector is needed only during the analyzing time. The vacuum and atmosphere
are switched to the measurement atmosphere by the one button operation. When X rays (primary X

(energies) peculiar to the constituent elements of the specimen are produced from the elements.
There are two methods to investigate the energies. The first method is Qualitative analysis which
can be made by investigating the wavelengths of the fluorescence X rays and the other method is
quantitative analysis by investigating the X ray dose. One is for optical separation to them and the
other is to use the energy separation characteristic of the X ray detector. The former is called the

37. Retributivism Vs Utilitarian Theory
The concept of morality and moral rules and laws has as its corollary, the concept of rule breaking
or acting immorally. A common response to immoral behavior is punishments, which leads me to
ask the question: how is punishment justified? In his article The Classic Debate , American legal
philosopher Joel Feinberg lays out the main points of discourse between the two major theories of
justified punishment, which I will deconstruct. Feinberg asserts that there are two main theories
used to justify punishment: Retributivism and Utilitarianism. These two theories supposedly oppose
each other such that they are mutually exclusive and jointly exhaustive (Feinberg). The latter of
these theories, Utilitarianism, is the main concern of this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second thesis of pure moralistic retributivism, that moral guilt is a sufficient condition for
punishment, is far more contentious (Feinber 647). One of the common counterarguments to this
point which Feinberg notes is similar to the old addage two wrongs don t make a right . If
punishment is justified irrespective of future consequences, and it is assumed that the chosen
punishment (i.e. prison time, fine) isn t itself a good, than how can this negative action be justified
if it doesn t necessarily bring about some goodness? Retributivists often respond by using the
example of sadness as a response to suffering. Neither sadness nor suffering are inherently good,
but sadness in response to someone else s suffering is uniquely appropriate (Feinberg 647). In the
same way that sadness is the appropriate response to suffering or teachers grade is the appropriate
response to a students performance on a test, punishment is the appropriate response to moral guilt
on the basis of justice. The concept of justice , the assignment of action on the basis of desert alone,
will become imporant later. Another critique raised by Feinberg relates to the third thesis of pure
moralistic retributivism: that punishment must be proportionate to the moral gravity of the offense.
This thesis implies a number consequences which are problematic. Firstly, if
