Radical Personal Statement
Radical is a word that is generally associated with current abominable global events. But the word
radical, means change relating to or affecting the fundamental nature of something. When I first set
out my college passage, I was pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering in the state of Texas. This
required me to take heavy math and science classes allowing me to develop a unique way of
approaching problems and their respective solutions. When I was a child I never watched cartoons but
instead viewed documentaries, with a majority of them being related to the aerospace industry. I love
anything that flies; especially in space. When I made the choice to pursue aerospace engineering it
was not made lightly. I quickly started engaging in after school ... Show more content on

Economics teaches us that we live in a finite world with finite resources and therefore terraforming
other worlds is a necessity for us. I was contributing my life to something much greater than myself.
Throughout my engineering days, I developed a strong dislike for the world of business; I saw it
corrupt and detrimental to the overall progress of humanity. The concentration of wealth, incentives
for singular/small group behavior, and the probability for decisions to be based on the outcome of
short term gains as opposed to long term environmental gains. In short, I felt that business created a
division amongst people with their own self interest at hand and therefore suppressed the rate of
progression. One day the ground beneath me and the skies above me started to abruptly shift. I started
seeing a place for business in not only my life but the world. It was a process drawn out overtime, but
there was one significant day, in which I knew that to truly change the world you might just have to
change yourself. I was use to observing the physical and natural world around me, but I didn t have
the slightest clue about the hidden sub world of

Invention of the Steam Engine Essay examples
Invention of the Steam Engine
Mankind s interrelation with manufacturing systems has a long history. Nowadays we see
manufacturing systems and their applications as systems in which goods are produced and delivered to
the suitable places where we can obtain them. We are conscious of the fact that everything we
consume or obtain is produced at some facilities. We are also aware of the fact that many components
involve at these processes such as laborers, capital, and machines. Nevertheless, majority of people
might not realize how these processes have developed all along this time and changed our daily lives
surprisingly. Manufacturing, as a crucial part of the industry, has always had overwhelming impacts

This machine was so simple that it had no moving parts. It also used up lots and lots of coal just to
pump a small quantity of water. (Phil Shapiro) Nevertheless, Thomas Savery became the first man to
produce a workable apparatus for raising water. In detail, Savery s apparatus was able to draw water
up by suction to a height of approximately twenty six to twenty eight feet. The water was able to reach
this height due to atmospheric pressure and the condensation of steam within the closed vessel. Savery
was the first to make the necessary connection between steam power and atmospheric pressure.
Without adding in atmospheric pressure, steam power may have never been harnessed. (Robert H.
Thurston) Savery became the first to put the method of raising water by fire to use for draining mines.
To say it was a steam engine that would be to stretch the world engine far beyond its current meaning.
However, it would be fair to say that Savery was the first person to find a practical way of using steam
to perform useful work.
The next milestone in the history of the steam engine was a result of the work of Thomas Newcomen,
who was not quickly recognized for his achievements or contributions to the steam engine. His engine
was introduced in 1712 and was basically a combination of the boiler used in Savery s engine with a
cylinder and pump. The Newcomen model was unlike other engines up to this time. It was the first
engine that was actually

Symbols In Dogville
As Dogville begins, it is clear that the film is unlike any other. The initial scene opens to a bird s eye
view of a mining town in the 1930 s. Right away, the film demonstrates a break from the idea of
realism, and displays the minimalistic and expressionistic approach that mirrors the viewing of a live
play. The town itself is very small, and each building or home in Dogville is displayed by a chalk
outline, with the descriptor of each building inside. Inside each dwelling is housed only essential
pieces of furniture, that serve the plot and characters during the film (Von Trier). Dogville is filmed
and set more along the lines of a play than a film, and follows many structures, theorists, characters
types and themes related to the history ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This however, does not encompass the only possible theme throughout the film. Dogville can be seen
as an anti American film, due to its American setting, critique of poverty and the individualization of
western culture. It criticizes the way in which America views everyone as individuals, instead of a
community of many, and as such, that individuals are responsible for their own happiness and success,
or lack thereof. It displays the absurdity, to an extreme, of how individual ideals and desires can
contribute to the hindering of compassion and understanding by the whole of a community. (Von

The Importance Of Neuropsychology And Its Effects On The...
Neuropsychology
Introduction
Neuropsychology is one of the many braches of psychology.
Explanation of Neuropsychology and Relevance to the Field of Psychology Neuropsychology is the
study of brain behavior relationships (Barkley, 1983). It is the scientific study of the association
between the different structures and physiological processes of the nervous system and the behavior of
organisms (Barkley, 1983). The focus of this particular field in psychology is not just pertaining to
humans as research on infrahumans consistently provides simple scientific information and data from
which research ideas on humans will be drawn/ concluded from (Barkley, 1983). For example,
research that was conducted on rats involved giving amphetamines to the rats with given closed head
injuries yielded the option of exploring the use of stimulant drugs in helping the recovery of adults and
children that have experienced accidental closed head trauma (Barkley, 1983). The field includes the
study of developmental changes of the nervous system and it s behavioral parallels as well as the
effects of experimental and also accidental changes of the nervous system on the behavior of an
individual (Barkley, 1983). Essentially, clinical neuropsychology is the application of this information
and knowledge, as well as knowledge from other fields of psychology, to the testing and treatment of
humans having showed or performed signs of neurological illnesses or diseases (Barkley, 1983).

Ishmael Harrington Extract
In the beginning of the extract, the theme that is revealed is hunger, which is present throughout the
extract especially when Harrington is watched eating. For example, this is clear to the audience as
Harrington chews hungrily, he eats beef which is being described by his observer. This quote proves
Harrington is desperately hungry: before thrusting a large chunk into his mouth, a greasy trickle of
pink liquid ran down to his chin as he chewed hungrily . I think that the phrase a greasy trickle of pink
liquid is describing the meat which is disgusting, gross because of the colour pink and it could also be
described as slimy. Equally, the author uses the description Large chunk to describe the beef. He ate
that yet ignored the pink liquid, therefore he was quite hungry, especially because of the size which is
used to describe the meat large chunk . He chewed hungrily is also another way to prove how hungry
he was. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Harrington frowns before picking up his knife and fork and cut angrily into the remains of his beef .
This suggests several things, either he didn t like the beef, or he was angry about being spied on. He
frowned shows the disapproval of the beef given to him by the way he frowned. Also, the description
of the facial expression shows disproval of what he was given. I think that He cut hungrily into the
remains of his beef because he was desperate to eat the beef and he was angry as the quote says, cut
angrily . Throughout this part of the extract the author describes Harrington and the actions he uses to
represent the way he feels. He was angry whilst he was cutting the beef this was shown in this quote
as well He frowned He disproved, could be another way to show his anger not only because he might
have been hungry but also because he might know that someone is spying on him. This could lead to
him being stressed which makes him eat more and feel hungry all the

Expansion of Top Level Domain
AGAINST THE MOTION
Aman Shrimal
Expansion of domain name for the benefit of users and companies as proposed by Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has many major flaws. According to
Association of National Advertisers: ICANN s proposed program for increasing competition,
promoting, innovation, addressing an alleged shortage of Internet addresses and helping differentiate
products and services is deeply flawed. (Association of National Advisers , 2011). The justification to
expand the domain name, that new gTLDs would facilitate customer search, promotes consumer
welfare, even though the registration cost for a new domain is excessively high and would harm the
brand name is flawed. The expansion of domain name will open internet for criminal activity where
felons can cyber squat in the name of trusted brands. Objections raised by stakeholders had not been
addressed adequately and the decision is mostly influenced by the parties getting directly benefits
from this program and not those going to get affected. Since beginning ICANN is proposing
introduction of new gTLDs without completing the comprehensive economic study of the domain
name registration market and, without having a completely developed understanding of the economic
realities of the domain marketplace. Thus, various communities are raising concerns for introduction
of new gTLDs. (Association of National

The New Common Core State Standards
Voices across the country are raising concerns about the new Common Core State Standards. But if
you listen carefully to the conversations, the main concern is not about the standards, themselves, but
about the consequences of high stakes tests attached to the standards. And those concerns are well
founded. Trying to implement goals for deeper learning through an outdated testing model tied to a
long list of punishments for children, educators, and schools is like pouring new wine into old bottles.
It will certainly turn sour. The Common Core, for those of you unaware, is a set of standards , skills
and requirements children need to understand by the end of the school year. Here s the thing, The

The ultimate goal intended was to ensure that students across the country are prepared to enter college
programs or the workforce after high school. Governors Association convened a panel of experts to
create the guidelines and standards that became Common Core. Yet, according to Stan Karp, editor for
Rethinking Schools magazine and education activist, said that the standards were drafted largely
behind closed doors by academics and assessment experts, many with ties to testing companies , Karp
also stated that In all, there were 135 people on the review panels for the Common Core. Not a single
one of them was a K 3 classroom teacher or early childhood professional (Karp 2014). The initiative s
purpose is to implement consistent, nationwide education standards in English and math, with the goal
of helping ensure that high school graduates across the country are ready for college or for
employment. Although Common Core isn t a federal law, the federal government supports it by
providing grants that are only available to those states that have adopted its guidelines and standards.
The joint issue for the common core would the new wave of high stakes Common Core tests. What
has been the norm when it comes to test prep will no longer be enough. This means that students will

Why Plastic Bags Should Be Banned
Banning Plastic Bags
The plastic bag is an innovative invention all around the world. It makes the world more convenient
and because of this convenience, the plastic bag is multi purposeful and is used widespread such as in
stores, houses, restaurants, etc. However, the problem is that a lot of people do not know that plastic
bags have many harmful effects. First of all, plastic bags cause environmental damages, and produces
cataclysmic events in wildlife. For example, plastic bags become litter after they are found in
waterways, parks, beaches, and streets. Plastic bags also effect air when burned, infusing the air with
toxins. Something that many may not think about when they think of plastic bags is the harmful
effects it brings to the animals. The death of countless animals such as dolphins, turtles, penguins, etc.
is due to the production of plastic bags. The ocean is home to thousands of species and ocean wonders
but there is so often trash thrown into the sea that disrupts the life beneath the water. Those animals
ingest plastic bags and ultimately die, while another animal comes back and eats that dead animal
which results in a chain reaction that is going to come back around and bite humans back. The public
should realize that plastic bags have adverse effects, and those effects will be worse than the
convenience of using a plastic bag.
Plastic bags produce environmental pollution. People need to reduce the use of plastic bags in order to
save the environment. This

Identity In John Locke s The Grapes Of Wrath
Seeking identity is an important aspect in the present global society. The interactions of between
different groups of people are characterized by the unique qualities the members of those groups
identify with. These groups are defined by race, class, religion, sex, politics, etc. Ironically, as a
whole, mankind has more similarities than differences: religions typically share the common core
values of love and peace, facial expressions are understood worldwide, and mankind even has a 90%
shared genome. Perhaps our similarities are what drive us to seek individuality, or some evidence of
specialness, and purpose: we seem to have an accepted idea that If I m different, I must be here for
contribution and reason . I find Locke s philosophy compelling ... Show more content on

Furthermore, he states there is no evidence to suggest that the same individual spirit may not be united
to different bodies. I find this interesting because this broad assertion depicts a sense of unity of one
soul with all of mankind, throughout time. His suggestion strikes me as somewhat mystical: if the
same soul or man was present in different ages, it sounds like a form of reincarnation. However,
instead of reincarnation as plants or animals, Locke excludes non human bodies. If this were true, then
who is to say our souls are not tied to all times in history, and therefore all people in history. It reminds
me of The Grapes of Wrath, where the unity of mankind versus religion is holy. His assertion suggests
to me an element of creating an on earth as it is in heaven scenario where unity is correlated with
peace. In addition, if one were to experience all souls in all time, would this not make one God? Locke
himself does not suggest this, and my understanding of what he is trying to convey may be mistaken.
Even if his assertion is true, present violence, etc. is not affected by this supposed degree of unity.
Nevertheless, I find this aspect of Locke s philosophy compelling because I interpreted it as hinting at
an extent of

Classical Athenian Women Analysis
Much of the history of humanity is understood and interpreted through the physical and conceptual
arts of ancient civilisations. Athenian arts from the classical period generally depict the real or the
ideal of specific cultural themes. Women had specific rights, roles and expectations around 5th century
Athens, with importance prominent in areas of the household, religion and male opinion. The position
of women in classical Athenian society is reflected and depicted within the Greek arts of that time.

Art showing women in domestic settings and social situations became increasingly common in the late
5th century (Camp and Fisher. 2010:183). The fountain vase, or hydra, in Appendix 1, includes an

frequent appearance of this depiction in Greek art verifies the singularity of social events in the
majority of Athenian women s lives. However, this task was avoided by wives of wealthy families,
whom had slaves to perform tasks outside the house for them (Powell, A. 1988:328). Aristophanes,

This type of growth is important as it helps the child grow and provides a purpose for the child.
Another benefit is that this toy will encourage solitary and active play, types of social patterns and
play, which is vital for child s development. This toy supports skill development through maturation as
children will learn how to play with this toy as they mature cognitively. According to Piaget s idea of
schemas which are created by assimilation and accommodation, the schema for the child in the
preoperational stage will be that they will think that two different shapes of the same colour would
both fit into the same cut out hole in the box, when in fact, they will not. The child then goes through
assimilation, where they will adjust their existing schema and understand that an object can be
classified by more than one feature. The state of the schema is then changed from disequilibrium to
equilibrium. Therefore, this toy is developmentally appropriate to children in the preoperational stage
as it will encourage the child to overcome an issue they face in their age period. PART C:

Mexican American War And The Mexican War
The Mexican American war better known as the Mexican war, was a conflict between The united
states of America and Mexico. from 1846 to 1848. It followed in the wake of the 1845 US annexation
of Texas, which Mexico considered part of its territory, despite the 1836 Texas revolution. After its
independence in 1821 and brief experiment with monarchy, Mexico became a republic in 1824,
characterized by considerable instability, so that when war broke out in 1846, Mexico was ill prepared
for this conflict. The war with the United States followed in the wake of decades of Indian raids in the
sparsely settled north of Mexico, which prompted the Mexican government to sponsor American
migration to the Mexican province of Texas to act as a buffer. Americans and some Mexicans revolted
against the Mexican government in the 1836 Texas Revolution, creating a republic not recognized by
Mexico, which still claimed it as its national territory. The 1845 expansion of US territory with its
annexation of Texas escalated the dispute between the United States and Mexico to open war. In 1844
James K. Polk, the newly elected president, made a proposition to the Mexican government to
purchase the disputed lands between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. When that offer was
rejected, troops from the United States commanded by Major General Zachary Taylor were moved
into the disputed territory of Coahuila. These troops were then attacked by Mexican troops, killing 12

Women Spies in the American Civil War
With over a half million deaths the most gruesome war in American history drove citizens to action.
The suffering during this era was so great many were inspired by nationalism to act. For those who
were unable to join the fight upon the battlefield, espionage represented a chance for personal
involvement. Although it is believed that many agents never sought recognition for their service,
especially Confederate scouts, documentation depicts the espionage present during the American Civil
War to be surprisingly sophisticated. By examining the recorded history involving active female
intelligence agents in the American Civil War, we can see the roles of female scouts were severely
underestimated, frequently encouraged, and generally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, some women enlisted in the armies disguised as males, others found they could
contribute their service to the war through acting as scouts. For those women that enlisted, changing
their dress was only a small fraction of the work required to blend in to their brigade. Hiding all
feminine characteristics including the ways, in which they walked, talked, sat, and acted was
necessary to avoid detection (Eggleston 2). An abundance of radical periodicals and writings intended
for a female audience emerged at the beginning of the war (Endres 32). With ample encouragement
women found it within their interests to take an active role in the fight. Some, including Elizabeth Van
Lew, simply desired for the feuding between the regions to end and found espionage to be their
contribution (Kane 235). In Companions of Crisis: The Spy Memoir as a Social Document , Curtis
Carroll Davis depicts the female scouts perceiving their duty to their country to be through espionage.
Surprisingly, men, including fathers and other patriarchal figures, actively sought the help of their
female kin to play an active role in the war through espionage. For instance, the father of Antonia Ford
encouraged his daughter to entertain and extract information from Union officers on behalf of the
Confederate cause (Eggleston 97). The passion for liberty was undoubtedly just as

Rising costs of healthcare is a valid concern for many households in America. A factor in the cost of
healthcare insurance is fraud. Fraud is often very difficult to detect. The magnitude of healthcare fraud
is unknown. Initial reimbursement and payment and billing timeframe of 90 days allows for fast
payment of services, however, many times before there is an indication of fraudulent billing the
company has closed up and moved on. Fraud in American healthcare, costs American s millions

Fascism Dbq Essay
Ambitious leaders took advantage of the economic fall and fought politically with rivals to rise to
power, and showcasing the growth in economy and military power after betraying the people and
ridding of unwanted elements.
Furthermore, people turned to fascism because of the Great Depression which cost many jobs and
promise of a brighter future. Document A tells us that their economy fell pretty badly. It led to massive
unemployment rates. There was not enough support for society because many nations were financially
insecure due to the war. Fascist leaders painted a brighter picture of a booming economy and jobs to
these people. The fascist leaders were able to pinpoint the supposed problems of the nations that
caused them to decline. In document f, Hitler says that the Weimar Republic s policies are to blame
and the ideas that were spreading. Fascist leaders used the economic decline to their advantage by
including it in their platform that they will work to bring jobs to everybody. In turn, Germany turned
to fascism because they thought electing a fascist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Document E tells us that Jack is ambitious because he says that he should be leader because he is the
most qualified. Document C tells us that Ralph disagrees with Jack and he stands for democracy. Jack
is very assertive and that makes his followers (the hunters) side with him all the time. His ferocity and
braveness makes many others join the new clan that he makes. Ralph sees a decline in popularity and
is left with Piggy (the only other person that wants democracy). Like in the Lord of the Flies, Hitler
had to fight against opposition. He lost the election to be president, but he still persevered and in the
end was elected chancellor. This has also happened in Russia where Stalin and Trotsky gets into a
power struggle. Eventually, Trotsky is beaten and Stalin gets into power just like how Jack gets into

Homeowner Relief Programs
Attention, you just lost more than 50% of your home s value and since you are in default on your
payments the bank has decided to foreclose. The housing bubble in the United States despite the
warnings of financial experts, led to a series of events that were exposed as a result of the bubble
bursting. In the wake of such financial devastation was the onset of various homeowner relief
programs designed to prevent a plethora of foreclosures and reduce further damages to the economy.
Unfortunately, many fell victim to this collapse and were not afforded the opportunity to delay the
foreclosure process or outright denied any of the available options by their lenders. Despite the
negligent lending practices that contributed to high risk loans being ... Show more content on

Failure to implement homeowner relief programs would yield results that far exceeded local and state
boundaries creating a nationwide catastrophe. As it is with the wide array of relief programs that 30%
of those who qualified for relief have defaulted again (ElBoghdady, 2014). Now, imagine the level of
defaults if such programs did not exist. The lasting impacts of such programs could do wonders for the
borrowers receiving help from the modifications or aid associated with the aforementioned relief
programs. However, this would be less than desirable from an investor position who contributed to or
agreed to offer relief in various forms. The unknown variables in the housing market could fall and
result in the borrowers being upside again. Further affecting the banks with undervalued assets could
result in a loss of investor confidence and face a collapse similar to that of Lehman Brothers. Although
Lehman Brothers had other contributing factors to their collapse, contributory actions in the collapse
was a result of bad mortgages and lack of investment to sustain its debts and operating expenses. Not
having programs such as these could result in large investment firms either going out of business or
the government deciding to use tax payer dollars to bail out the investment banks. Either way this
depreciates property value and reduces income. The second and third order affects associated with
reduced income and plummeting property values will directly affect consumer spending. This absence
of consumer spending will create a ripple effect that could result in less supply and demand and
increase unemployment. All of which could put the country into a depression that it may not be able to

The Factors Of Political Socialization
Cheryl Lee
Robin Datta
November 13, 2015
Exam #2
Similar to many of the things we are introduced to growing up as humans, our political knowledge is
one of the things that does not derive from one specific source. Our thoughts on politics is constantly
evolving and maturing as we encounter different agents throughout our lives. These agents of political
socialization include our family, our education, the media, and many more. They shape our values and
beliefs from the moment we are born to the moment we die. Our family environment contributes to
our interest in politics in the future, our education teaches us the fundamentals of American
government and politics, and lastly the media continuously shapes our view of the government. All
three of these agents, are crucial in allowing us to understand ourselves and our beliefs today. Many
intellects will argue that family is one of the most important agents in regards to political socialization
(cite). This comes as no surprise, as children we are incapable of making rational decisions for
ourselves. Thus, our parents and family members are tasked with making the best possible choices for
us instead. In fact, as children we want to please our parents so we are receptive to their views, this
includes political beliefs. (Stockwell, Chapter 6: Public Opinion, Political Socialization, and the
Media.) Furthermore, our family can also have an effect on how we view politics in our future.

Good vs. Evil in John Cheever s The Five-Forty-Eight Essay
Good vs. Evil in John Cheever s The Five Forty Eight
John Cheever was an award winning American author of the twentieth century. His work often
possessed psychological and religious vision with central themes of sin, deception, and redemption
(Kennedy, 551). Cheever s short story entitled The Five Forty Eight portrays a struggle of good vs.
evil. Following the themes of sin, deception, and redemption, we read of a young woman (good)
seeking revenge for the evil done to her. Through the course of the story the reader can distinguish
between the traits of good and evil.
The Webster s dictionary defines evil as that which is morally wrong. Blake has some distinct morality
issues. Blake, the evil force in the story, possesses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His relationships are not the only area of his life that we see Blake?s evil nature rise. There are subtle
hints of his self obsession throughout Cheever?s story. Early on in the story, Blake is admiring himself
in a plate glass window and sees himself with ?a clear reflection? and the crowds ?like shadows at his
back? (551). He then sees Mrs. Dent as a ?contorted being? (551) in the same window. Blake sees
himself as a flawless creature of complete perfection with the mass of city pedestrians as a blur behind
his faultlessness, and he can easily pick out the imperfections in other individuals. He sees himself as
the ultimate perfection, instead of seeing the negative impact he has on his friends and family. His
negative interactions with friends and family are the evil force that breaks his relationships. There is
no mention of any moral actions performed by him.
We find yet another example of Blake?s immoral actions through his self conceit. He fails to comfort a
crying Mrs. Dent, ?he felt too contented and warm and sleepy to worry about her tears? (553). Blake
has no compassion for others; he only worries about his own affairs. This is indicative that Blake is
morally wrong.
Blake so genuinely sees himself as perfect that it is virtually impossible for him to accept any minor
mistakes he makes. When he first comes across Mrs. Dent after their affair, he is surprised to find that
he cannot

Violence In Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho
Alfred Hitchcock s, Psycho, is a black and white psycho horror film with gothic influences, set in the
cities of Phoenix, Arizona and Fairvale, California. It was released in 1960 and at the time was
extremely groundbreaking in terms of the violence and sadistic nature of the film. Before Psycho was
released, films did not have the amount of violence and that appalling aspect that the film presents.
Hitchcock s film changed the horror genre and even created its own sub genre in psycho horror. The
film stars Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, Vera miles as Lila Crane,
and John Gavin as Sam Loomis. The audience follows the path of Marion Crane who steals a sum of

A Brief Note On Neuro Surgery Or Neurological Surgery
Neurological Surgeon
The career I m most passionate about doing is that of a Neurosurgeon. Neuro surgery or Neurological
surgery is the medical service concerned with the diagnosis and treatments of conditions, illnesses,
and injuries involving the nervous system and its support structures. I chose this career because I m
fascinated with the functions of the human brain, as well as the human body as a whole. Also, this
career appeals to me because it gives you an opportunity to save lives, and make a difference. This is
something I m hoping to accomplish. In my paper, I m going to cover various things such as:
requirements and qualifications, tools and technology, working conditions, salary, my interests in this
career, and a personal interview.
Successful Neuro Surgery is actually really young, being developed during this past century. Pioneer
surgeon s abilities were very limited due to their lack of technology and knowledge of the human
nervous system. Today, Neurosurgery represents one of the most successful and prestigious
specialties, which continues to lead the way in research, education, and advances in surgical
technologies, which serve all areas of medicine. ( Northeast Columbia Office ).

The Role of Nick Bottom and the Significance of His Portrayal
The Role of Nick Bottom and the Significance of His Portrayal The significance and role of Nick
Bottom is made prominent by Shakespeare. This is due to the fact that the play he is in is relevant not
just to the text, but also to Shakespeare in terms of his personal life and in historical context. Nick
Bottom is part of the mechanicals who are a group of six men who meet to rehearse and later perform
a play. Five of the mechanicals are performers and one is a narrator. Nick Bottom plays Pyramus in
this play. It is based around two characters that fall in love; however circumstances prevent them from
seeing each other. The play is to be performed for Theseus and Hippolyta at their wedding. The ...

As a result a law was passed preventing acting from taking place on the streets, as outside theatre
groups were of a poor standard. Shakespeare used this criticism in order to show that he didn t look
highly on amateur acting performing his art . This is emphasised by Shakespeare by the way in which
he portrays the mechanicals, with their incompetent acting skills. In Act four, scene two, Bottom has a
nightmare, it is the way that he deals with this nightmare which is not only crucial to understanding
the character of Bottom, but also to the social commentaries that Shakespeare is making. He shows his
fear but then turns it into a ballad, this illustrates the power of the text to take problems and fears and
convert them into comedy. This is Shakespeare s commentary on the nature of his work and its utility,
of taking fear and making hilarity; yet another occasion when the character of Bottom shows his
significance to the play. There are several reasons why the play performed by the mechanicals is
significant, to the overall play, as well as providing an element of comedy. This is shown by the
resemblance of the characters between the plays. Pyramus and Thisbe face parental disapproval in the
play within a play, similarly to Hermia and Lysander. Both plays also have a recurrent theme of
romantic confusion; Pyramus believes that Thisbe has been killed by the lion, and the

Chapter 6 The Pls System Essay
In chapter 6 section 1 it talks about the creation of the PLS system. As a new nation was created there
had to be a system put in place in order to keep from arguments erupting over land, this system was
created by a committee led by Thomas Jefferson in 1784. This system although having some
weaknesses is still used today to divide land. There are two main systems used in the United States
these are the metes and bounds and the GLO system.
6.2 This section describes that no survey is final until all paperwork is completed and approved by the
government. If there is a problem found in a survey then the most recent survey should be used to
correct this problem. If the same problem is found in the most recent survey then the original survey
should be found and used to solve the issue.

6.6 In 1785 the area of Wisconsin Michigan Ohio Illinois and Indiana was surveyed into 36 lots. The
land divided like these are all states east of the Mississippi because the Louisiana Purchase was not

6.7 the act of 1796 was put in place in order to improve the act of 1785. There where no surveys taken
between 1788 and 1796 until the act was put in place. This act split townships into 1 mile by 1 mile
square tiles, with interior tiles being run every 2 miles.

divide townships into 5 mile tracts with markers every 2 and a half miles. The second describes the

The Microsoft Monopoly Essay
The Microsoft Monopoly
I. Introduction
United States vs. Microsoft is one the largest, most controversial antitrust lawsuits in American
history. Many claim the government is wrongly punishing Microsoft for being innovative and
successful, arguing that Windows dominates the market because of the product s popularity, not
because of malpractice by the parent company. Others argue in favor of the government, claiming that
Microsoft s practices conflict with the free market ideal. There are many arguments for both sides of
the lawsuit, but what the case really comes down to is this: does the government have the right to
interfere in today s marketplace? Or is Microsoft violating laws that are rightfully imposed by the
government? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the 1980 s, it became the pre eminent operating systems of personal computers, until
another operating system, DR DOS, was released by a company called Digital Research. Critics claim
that this operating system never had a chance at gaining a fair share of the market because Microsoft
deliberately slowed DR DOS s sales by announcing a better version of MS DOS was on its way
(Newman).
Windows, a program that was created in 1983, but did not change the market significantly until 1990,
has grown to control 94.1% of the operating system market (Newman). This has required other
companies in the software industry to make all of their applications Windows compatible. Critics
claim that Microsoft systematically eliminated all competition of other operating systems and software
manufacturers. Microsoft also controls a large part of the software industry. According to sales from
April 2002, Microsoft sold 89% of office software to consumers (Washington Post). Microsoft
bundles these applications with the Windows operating system, which is, according to them, an
effective technique. Critics assert that this forces other makers of office software, like Corel, to lose
business, because consumers will not buy another application if one is already pre installed. Critics
point to the proposed 1995 merger between Microsoft and Inuit which ultimately failed. Inuit is the
maker of the best selling money management

Augustus Superstition
Suetonius describes Augustus in a negative light. At first it didn t seem that way. The Roman historian
touched on Augustus interest in Greek literature and almost a hunger to understand and respect it.
From this description it felt more like admiration for Augustus attempting to understand what he did
not. Yet Suetonius then goes to discuss Augustus sensitivity and immense superstition. More time was
spent detailing his fears and strange behavior than depicting his interests in another culture. It almost
seemed as though Suetonius was mocking Augustus, showcasing someone that was interested in
everything Hellenistic yet who was also afraid to go out on certain days of the week. If his shoes were
put on in the wrong way in the morning, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But considering that Suetonius is a Roman historian, I believe that is safe to assume that it cannot be
trusted. The Greeks and Romans at the time had tension from past wars and disagreements. In Rome,
Greek wasn t a first language, if it had been Augustus would ve known it. For if he had occasion to use
the language, he wrote what he had to say in Latin and gave it to someone else to translate (Suetonius
89). This seems to prove that the first language learned by the Romans was Latin not Greek, meaning
that Greek culture came second to Roman culture. Greek culture wasn t a priority. So when
considering whether these accounts are real, it s debatable for two reasons. One, the accounts may be
real in the sense that Suetonius is depicting through his own narrative how Romans view anyone who
is interested in Greek culture. They might seem simple minded and fickle, the way that he seems to
describe Augustus. The second reason being that these events could be untrue; Augustus could have
had a few small superstitions that Suetonius merely exaggerated because of his potential disapproval
of his interest in Greek culture. This would mean that August was curious about Greek culture and the
world around him but it was presented to us in a negative way. Personally, because the examples of
Augustus worries seemed to be exaggerated, coupled with Suetonius being a Roman historian, I do not
trust his account of Augustus completely. I believe that Augustus was curious but not too curious for
his own

Romeo And Juliet Rhetorical Analysis
In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses oxymora to help describe complicated human emotions. People
can have two opposing emotions such as love and hate. This is accuratly protrayed throughout the play
but mostly with the character of Juliet. For example Juliet uses the oxymoron fiend angelical in her
speech. This oxymoron means devil angle. Representing the fact that Juliet is struggling with her
interpation of Romeo character after he killed Tybalt. She thinks he may have the same traits as the
devil such as cruelness and wickedness. But her love for him makes her find it hard to belive that that
can be possible. She thinks of an angle in their love. Pure and happy is what she sees him as and
subconciously wishes he was.

  • 2. Radical Personal Statement Radical is a word that is generally associated with current abominable global events. But the word radical, means change relating to or affecting the fundamental nature of something. When I first set out my college passage, I was pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering in the state of Texas. This required me to take heavy math and science classes allowing me to develop a unique way of approaching problems and their respective solutions. When I was a child I never watched cartoons but instead viewed documentaries, with a majority of them being related to the aerospace industry. I love anything that flies; especially in space. Economics teaches us that we live in a finite world with finite resources and therefore terraforming other worlds is a necessity for us. I was contributing my life to something much greater than myself. Throughout my engineering days, I developed a strong dislike for the world of business; I saw it corrupt and detrimental to the overall progress of humanity. The concentration of wealth, incentives for singular/small group behavior, and the probability for decisions to be based on the outcome of short term gains as opposed to long term environmental gains. In short, I felt that business created a division amongst people with their own self interest at hand and therefore suppressed the rate of progression. One day the ground beneath me and the skies above me started to abruptly shift. I started seeing a place for business in not only my life but the world. It was a process drawn out overtime, but there was one significant day, in which I knew that to truly change the world you might just have to change yourself. Nowadays we see manufacturing systems and their applications as systems in which goods are produced and delivered to the suitable places where we can obtain them. We are conscious of the fact that everything we consume or obtain is produced at some facilities. We are also aware of the fact that many components involve at these processes such as laborers, capital, and machines. This machine was so simple that it had no moving parts. It also used up lots and lots of coal just to pump a small quantity of water. (Phil Shapiro) Nevertheless, Thomas Savery became the first man to produce a workable apparatus for raising water. In detail, Savery s apparatus was able to draw water up by suction to a height of approximately twenty six to twenty eight feet. The water was able to reach this height due to atmospheric pressure and the condensation of steam within the closed vessel. Savery was the first to make the necessary connection between steam power and atmospheric pressure. Without adding in atmospheric pressure, steam power may have never been harnessed. (Robert H. Thurston) Savery became the first to put the method of raising water by fire to use for draining mines. To say it was a steam engine that would be to stretch the world engine far beyond its current meaning. However, it would be fair to say that Savery was the first person to find a practical way of using steam to perform useful work. The next milestone in the history of the steam engine was a result of the work of Thomas Newcomen, who was not quickly recognized for his achievements or contributions to the steam engine. His engine was introduced in 1712 and was basically a combination of the boiler used in Savery s engine with a cylinder and pump. The Newcomen model was unlike other engines up to this time. It was the first engine that was actually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Symbols In Dogville As Dogville begins, it is clear that the film is unlike any other. The initial scene opens to a bird s eye view of a mining town in the 1930 s. Right away, the film demonstrates a break from the idea of realism, and displays the minimalistic and expressionistic approach that mirrors the viewing of a live play. The town itself is very small, and each building or home in Dogville is displayed by a chalk outline, with the descriptor of each building inside. Inside each dwelling is housed only essential pieces of furniture, that serve the plot and characters during the film (Von Trier). Dogville is filmed and set more along the lines of a play than a film, and follows many structures, theorists, characters types and themes related to the history ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This however, does not encompass the only possible theme throughout the film. Dogville can be seen as an anti American film, due to its American setting, critique of poverty and the individualization of western culture. It criticizes the way in which America views everyone as individuals, instead of a community of many, and as such, that individuals are responsible for their own happiness and success, or lack thereof. It displays the absurdity, to an extreme, of how individual ideals and desires can contribute to the hindering of compassion and understanding by the whole of a community. (Von ... Explanation of Neuropsychology and Relevance to the Field of Psychology Neuropsychology is the study of brain behavior relationships (Barkley, 1983). It is the scientific study of the association between the different structures and physiological processes of the nervous system and the behavior of organisms (Barkley, 1983). The focus of this particular field in psychology is not just pertaining to humans as research on infrahumans consistently provides simple scientific information and data from which research ideas on humans will be drawn/ concluded from (Barkley, 1983). For example, research that was conducted on rats involved giving amphetamines to the rats with given closed head injuries yielded the option of exploring the use of stimulant drugs in helping the recovery of adults and children that have experienced accidental closed head trauma (Barkley, 1983). The field includes the study of developmental changes of the nervous system and it s behavioral parallels as well as the effects of experimental and also accidental changes of the nervous system on the behavior of an individual (Barkley, 1983). Essentially, clinical neuropsychology is the application of this information and knowledge, as well as knowledge from other fields of psychology, to the testing and treatment of humans having showed or performed signs of neurological illnesses or diseases (Barkley, 1983). • 6. Ishmael Harrington Extract In the beginning of the extract, the theme that is revealed is hunger, which is present throughout the extract especially when Harrington is watched eating. For example, this is clear to the audience as Harrington chews hungrily, he eats beef which is being described by his observer. This quote proves Harrington is desperately hungry: before thrusting a large chunk into his mouth, a greasy trickle of pink liquid ran down to his chin as he chewed hungrily . I think that the phrase a greasy trickle of pink liquid is describing the meat which is disgusting, gross because of the colour pink and it could also be described as slimy. Equally, the author uses the description Large chunk to describe the beef. He ate that yet ignored the pink liquid, therefore he was quite hungry, especially because of the size which is used to describe the meat large chunk . He chewed hungrily is also another way to prove how hungry he was. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Expansion Of Top Level Domain IST 618 Information Policy Debate Notes Expansion of Top Level Domain AGAINST THE MOTION Aman Shrimal Expansion of domain name for the benefit of users and companies as proposed by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has many major flaws. According to Association of National Advertisers: ICANN s proposed program for increasing competition, promoting, innovation, addressing an alleged shortage of Internet addresses and helping differentiate products and services is deeply flawed. (Association of National Advisers , 2011). The justification to expand the domain name, that new gTLDs would facilitate customer search, promotes consumer welfare, even though the registration cost for a new domain is excessively high and would harm the brand name is flawed. The expansion of domain name will open internet for criminal activity where felons can cyber squat in the name of trusted brands. Objections raised by stakeholders had not been addressed adequately and the decision is mostly influenced by the parties getting directly benefits from this program and not those going to get affected. Since beginning ICANN is proposing introduction of new gTLDs without completing the comprehensive economic study of the domain name registration market and, without having a completely developed understanding of the economic realities of the domain marketplace. Thus, various communities are raising concerns for introduction of new gTLDs. (Association of National ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Why Plastic Bags Should Be Banned Banning Plastic Bags The plastic bag is an innovative invention all around the world. It makes the world more convenient and because of this convenience, the plastic bag is multi purposeful and is used widespread such as in stores, houses, restaurants, etc. However, the problem is that a lot of people do not know that plastic bags have many harmful effects. First of all, plastic bags cause environmental damages, and produces cataclysmic events in wildlife. For example, plastic bags become litter after they are found in waterways, parks, beaches, and streets. Plastic bags also effect air when burned, infusing the air with toxins. Something that many may not think about when they think of plastic bags is the harmful effects it brings to the animals. The death of countless animals such as dolphins, turtles, penguins, etc. is due to the production of plastic bags. The ocean is home to thousands of species and ocean wonders but there is so often trash thrown into the sea that disrupts the life beneath the water. Those animals ingest plastic bags and ultimately die, while another animal comes back and eats that dead animal which results in a chain reaction that is going to come back around and bite humans back. The public should realize that plastic bags have adverse effects, and those effects will be worse than the convenience of using a plastic bag. Plastic bags produce environmental pollution. The interactions of between different groups of people are characterized by the unique qualities the members of those groups identify with. These groups are defined by race, class, religion, sex, politics, etc. Ironically, as a whole, mankind has more similarities than differences: religions typically share the common core values of love and peace, facial expressions are understood worldwide, and mankind even has a 90% shared genome. Furthermore, he states there is no evidence to suggest that the same individual spirit may not be united to different bodies. I find this interesting because this broad assertion depicts a sense of unity of one soul with all of mankind, throughout time. His suggestion strikes me as somewhat mystical: if the same soul or man was present in different ages, it sounds like a form of reincarnation. However, instead of reincarnation as plants or animals, Locke excludes non human bodies. If this were true, then who is to say our souls are not tied to all times in history, and therefore all people in history. It reminds me of The Grapes of Wrath, where the unity of mankind versus religion is holy. His assertion suggests to me an element of creating an on earth as it is in heaven scenario where unity is correlated with peace. In addition, if one were to experience all souls in all time, would this not make one God? Locke himself does not suggest this, and my understanding of what he is trying to convey may be mistaken. Even if his assertion is true, present violence, etc. is not affected by this supposed degree of unity. According to Piaget s idea of schemas which are created by assimilation and accommodation, the schema for the child in the preoperational stage will be that they will think that two different shapes of the same colour would both fit into the same cut out hole in the box, when in fact, they will not. The child then goes through assimilation, where they will adjust their existing schema and understand that an object can be classified by more than one feature. The state of the schema is then changed from disequilibrium to equilibrium. It followed in the wake of the 1845 US annexation of Texas, which Mexico considered part of its territory, despite the 1836 Texas revolution. After its independence in 1821 and brief experiment with monarchy, Mexico became a republic in 1824, characterized by considerable instability, so that when war broke out in 1846, Mexico was ill prepared for this conflict. The war with the United States followed in the wake of decades of Indian raids in the sparsely settled north of Mexico, which prompted the Mexican government to sponsor American migration to the Mexican province of Texas to act as a buffer. Americans and some Mexicans revolted against the Mexican government in the 1836 Texas Revolution, creating a republic not recognized by Mexico, which still claimed it as its national territory. The 1845 expansion of US territory with its annexation of Texas escalated the dispute between the United States and Mexico to open war. In 1844 James K. Polk, the newly elected president, made a proposition to the Mexican government to purchase the disputed lands between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. Although it is believed that many agents never sought recognition for their service, especially Confederate scouts, documentation depicts the espionage present during the American Civil War to be surprisingly sophisticated. For those women that enlisted, changing their dress was only a small fraction of the work required to blend in to their brigade. Hiding all feminine characteristics including the ways, in which they walked, talked, sat, and acted was necessary to avoid detection (Eggleston 2). An abundance of radical periodicals and writings intended for a female audience emerged at the beginning of the war (Endres 32). With ample encouragement women found it within their interests to take an active role in the fight. Some, including Elizabeth Van Lew, simply desired for the feuding between the regions to end and found espionage to be their contribution (Kane 235). In Companions of Crisis: The Spy Memoir as a Social Document , Curtis Carroll Davis depicts the female scouts perceiving their duty to their country to be through espionage. Surprisingly, men, including fathers and other patriarchal figures, actively sought the help of their female kin to play an active role in the war through espionage. In the wake of such financial devastation was the onset of various homeowner relief programs designed to prevent a plethora of foreclosures and reduce further damages to the economy. Failure to implement homeowner relief programs would yield results that far exceeded local and state boundaries creating a nationwide catastrophe. As it is with the wide array of relief programs that 30% of those who qualified for relief have defaulted again (ElBoghdady, 2014). Now, imagine the level of defaults if such programs did not exist. The lasting impacts of such programs could do wonders for the borrowers receiving help from the modifications or aid associated with the aforementioned relief programs. However, this would be less than desirable from an investor position who contributed to or agreed to offer relief in various forms. The unknown variables in the housing market could fall and result in the borrowers being upside again. Further affecting the banks with undervalued assets could result in a loss of investor confidence and face a collapse similar to that of Lehman Brothers. Although Lehman Brothers had other contributing factors to their collapse, contributory actions in the collapse was a result of bad mortgages and lack of investment to sustain its debts and operating expenses. Not having programs such as these could result in large investment firms either going out of business or the government deciding to use tax payer dollars to bail out the investment banks. Either way this depreciates property value and reduces income. The second and third order affects associated with reduced income and plummeting property values will directly affect consumer spending. • 25. The Factors Of Political Socialization Cheryl Lee Robin Datta November 13, 2015 Exam #2 Similar to many of the things we are introduced to growing up as humans, our political knowledge is one of the things that does not derive from one specific source. Our thoughts on politics is constantly evolving and maturing as we encounter different agents throughout our lives. These agents of political socialization include our family, our education, the media, and many more. They shape our values and beliefs from the moment we are born to the moment we die. Our family environment contributes to our interest in politics in the future, our education teaches us the fundamentals of American government and politics, and lastly the media continuously shapes our view of the government. All three of these agents, are crucial in allowing us to understand ourselves and our beliefs today. Many intellects will argue that family is one of the most important agents in regards to political socialization (cite). This comes as no surprise, as children we are incapable of making rational decisions for ourselves. Thus, our parents and family members are tasked with making the best possible choices for us instead. In fact, as children we want to please our parents so we are receptive to their views, this includes political beliefs. (Stockwell, Chapter 6: Public Opinion, Political Socialization, and the Media.) Furthermore, our family can also have an effect on how we view politics in our future. Studies show Children whose parents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His work often possessed psychological and religious vision with central themes of sin, deception, and redemption (Kennedy, 551). Cheever s short story entitled The Five Forty Eight portrays a struggle of good vs. evil. Following the themes of sin, deception, and redemption, we read of a young woman (good) seeking revenge for the evil done to her. His relationships are not the only area of his life that we see Blake?s evil nature rise. There are subtle hints of his self obsession throughout Cheever?s story. Early on in the story, Blake is admiring himself in a plate glass window and sees himself with ?a clear reflection? and the crowds ?like shadows at his back? (551). He then sees Mrs. Dent as a ?contorted being? (551) in the same window. Blake sees himself as a flawless creature of complete perfection with the mass of city pedestrians as a blur behind his faultlessness, and he can easily pick out the imperfections in other individuals. He sees himself as the ultimate perfection, instead of seeing the negative impact he has on his friends and family. His negative interactions with friends and family are the evil force that breaks his relationships. There is no mention of any moral actions performed by him. We find yet another example of Blake?s immoral actions through his self conceit. He fails to comfort a crying Mrs. Dent, ?he felt too contented and warm and sleepy to worry about her tears? (553). Blake has no compassion for others; he only worries about his own affairs. This is indicative that Blake is morally wrong. Blake so genuinely sees himself as perfect that it is virtually impossible for him to accept any minor mistakes he makes. Others argue in favor of the government, claiming that Microsoft s practices conflict with the free market ideal. The Roman historian touched on Augustus interest in Greek literature and almost a hunger to understand and respect it. From this description it felt more like admiration for Augustus attempting to understand what he did not. Yet Suetonius then goes to discuss Augustus sensitivity and immense superstition. More time was spent detailing his fears and strange behavior than depicting his interests in another culture. But considering that Suetonius is a Roman historian, I believe that is safe to assume that it cannot be trusted. The Greeks and Romans at the time had tension from past wars and disagreements. In Rome, Greek wasn t a first language, if it had been Augustus would ve known it. For if he had occasion to use the language, he wrote what he had to say in Latin and gave it to someone else to translate (Suetonius 89). This seems to prove that the first language learned by the Romans was Latin not Greek, meaning that Greek culture came second to Roman culture. Greek culture wasn t a priority. So when considering whether these accounts are real, it s debatable for two reasons. One, the accounts may be real in the sense that Suetonius is depicting through his own narrative how Romans view anyone who is interested in Greek culture. They might seem simple minded and fickle, the way that he seems to describe Augustus. The second reason being that these events could be untrue; Augustus could have had a few small superstitions that Suetonius merely exaggerated because of his potential disapproval of his interest in Greek culture. This would mean that August was curious about Greek culture and the world around him but it was presented to us in a negative way.
