Session objective – At the end of this session we will be able to explain Context of changing disaster scenario and its relationship with Development. Characteristics of Development for Disaster Risk Reduction
Let us look at what happens to the hard won development due to disaster Quality of life and dignity Time If there is no disaster

Quality of life and dignity Time Ideal Preparedness
The Relationship Between Disasters & Development Development can increase vulnerability Development can reduce vulnerability Disaster can provide development opportunities Disaster can set back development DISASTER REALM DEVELOPMENT REALM POSITIVE REALM NEGATIVE REALM
Sustained efforts intended to improve or maintain the social and economic well-being of a community. People Centered Sustainability Community Participatory Approach Gender Concerns Children Reduce Vulnerability Use of capacities Life skills approach Livelihoods Ecology
Development towards Resilience capacity to absorb stress or destructive forces through resistance or adaptation capacity to manage, or maintain certain basic functions and structures, during disastrous events capacity to recover or ‘bounce back’ after an event
1. Prioritize adaptation efforts in communities. 2. Build projected climate change related trends in today’s risk and vulnerability assessment based on current climate variability. 3. Fully integrate adaptation into longerterm national and local sustainable development and poverty reduction strategies. 4. Prioritize the strengthening of existing capacities – among local authorities, civil society organizations, and the private sector. 5. Develop robust resource mobilisation mechanisms for adaptation that ensure the flow of both financial and technical support to local actors. 6. Leverage the opportunities in disaster prevention and response, through improved early warning systems, contingency planning and integrated response, to promote effective community-based adaptation and risk reduction. Development towards Resilience : 6 strategies
