How Did Exxel Differentiate Itself From Other Private...
1) What was the key strategy that Navarro pursued from 1991 on to establish Exxel as a leading Latin
American private equity organization? How did Exxel differentiate itself from other private equity
competitors?
Juan Navarro, the former Chairman of Citigroup Capital Investors S.A. (CCI) in Buenos Aires,
founded the Exxel Group in 1991. Due to his family s influential background in Uruguayan and
Argentine political and financial establishments, as well as his own work with the CCI, Navarro was
well connected and highly experienced in the financial and political sectors, and in private equity
itself. The political situation in Latin America at the time was fairly unstable and the launching of the
modern Argentine economic policy in 1991 saw ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
buyout firms and institutions. This was again for reasons of credibility as it assured both Latin
American and U.S. investors. Furthermore, it opened up more development opportunities for their
portfolio companies, as U.S. investors could transfer their experience from the American market to the
Argentine environment.
Exxel s fund devotion was mainly to invest in buyouts, recapitalizations, privatizations and mergers of
Argentine firms. Each fund was always devoted to a single transaction, which had the advantage of
being very focused on and informed about the transaction itself, as well as all corresponding
circumstances.
To differentiate itself from other private equity groups, Exxel built on Navarro s unique strength: his
ability to originate deals, based on his strong ties with local business community [!], and then to add
value to these enterprises . Exxel also put diligent work in their target selection. To maximize the
success rates, they first picked the most attractive industries, and then chose the best firms within
those industries.
To achieve an even stronger partnership with their portfolio companies, Navarro and his team would
then work on the development of a network of service

Justice Department was investigating the company s March 2006 agreement with Canadian generic
drug manufacturer Apotex. The agreement was intended to delay the Apotex s release of an
inexpensive generic version of Plavix.
Under the terms of Bristol Myers ill conceived agreement with Apotex, BMS offered Apotex $40
million to halt production of the generic Plavix until June 1, 2011. This date was five months before
the Plavix patent was set to expire. Bristol Myers also agreed not to release its own non branded
Plavix until six months after Apotex began to sell its generic version of the blood thinner. When asked
to approve the agreement, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state Attorneys General
objected to these provisions. They labelled the Bristol Myers concession anti competitive because it
assured that Apotex would be the sole market vendor of cheap, generic Plavix for at least six months.
So, Bristol Myers Squibb agreed to remove the anti competitive provision from the contract.
Nevertheless, the FTC began questioning Apotex regarding the revised agreement. During these
questioning sessions, Apotex told the federal regulators that Bristol Myers had given Apotex private
assurance that it would not release a general version of Plavix to the market.

Nussbaum s Overlapping Consensus
Humans are notoriously fickle, stubborn beings. Because of this, it is difficult to categorize/measure
every humans viewpoint in one condensed set of capabilities. Nussbaum does an adequate job of
making her list of capabilities broad, but a select number of them are not as applicable as others.
While Nussbaum s list of core capabilities is decisively somewhat universally inclusive, I believe
Nussbaum s list of capabilities in its entirety fails to captivate the sense of universalness that Rawls s
overlapping consensus encompasses, and believe that it cannot be applied universally.
While a number of Nussbaum s core capabilities potentially applies to enough people to consider it
universal, others do not fit the bill quite as well, thus tainting the universalness of the entire bunch.
The capabilities I believe to be the most universal are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, in some countries, many adolescent children are given tattoo like scars, a practice that
many western countries might consider to be mutilation. Cultural differences like that begin to reveal
the cracks in the supposed universalness of the core capabilities. Senses, imagination, and thought are
a very important capability to me especially, because I believe in the right to express oneself in
creative ways and be able to think about deeper concepts and communicate with others about their
thoughts, an act which is related to the fifth capability. Furthermore, the concept of comprehensive
education that can be easily accessed by all is extremely necessary, in my mind, and allows for our
collective society to move forward in a way the benefits everyone. Emotions, is also an equally
necessary capability that should be included. Emotional expression may not be an important capability
to some, but I believe that it is extremely important, especially when it allows people to develop their
minds emotionally as opposed to just intellectually. The fifth capability includes, [loving], [grieving],

Autonomy And Professionalism
Finally, at the heart at which governs how doctors act and behave are the four principles of medical
ethics (autonomy, beneficence, non maleficence, justice) and professionalism. From a BH tutorial on
ethics and professionalism, there was a case in which an elderly man s vision was slightly below the
values required to drive. If one was to come to a straightforward conclusion, it will be that as a doctor
you will not sign his medical report form stating his medical fitness to drive. Despite showing justice
and non maleficence to the patient, there is a conflict between autonomy and beneficence. However if
the doctor was to sign it, it would put people on the road at risk. It would also be unfair on the people

Food can be significant in people s lives for many...
Both Titus Andronicus and Grandpa s soup serve the purpose of entertaining the reader in juxtaposing
ways. Titus Andronicus is illustrative of the alarming horror that certain types of cooking and food
reinforce, whereas Grandpa s soup is representative of the warmth and affection that certain types of
food and cooking can bring. Themes portrayed in these texts such as death, mortality, celebration,
desperation, love and hate are looked at from completely different angles through the literary
techniques displayed by both writers, which will be analyzed and discussed in this essay.
First of all, the celebratory atmosphere created in both texts highlight the horror/happiness. For
example, in Titus Andronicus, ingredients of human flesh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast, Grandpa s Soup signifies that Grandpa s cooking provides her with genuine pleasure not
just contentment or satisfaction but something greater therefore she goes onto talk about her fear of
losing him, which overcasts a melancholic shadow over the whole poem. The writer understands that
death is a natural process that she cannot stop but she goes on to say how it will affect her living life
as she will be emotionally torn apart and carry the burden of pain throughout with the absence of her
Grandpa and his remedial soup.
There is evidence of figurative language that is very effective in outlining and comprehending the
character s point of view in Grandpa s Soup for example the simile like a rich island in the middle of
the soup sea . The hyperbole assists in getting her ideas across. Describing the soup as a sea represents
the depth of the character s feelings associated with the soup, and her Grandpa. This is reinforced by
the yearning that is evident through her language, for example he knows I will grow and pine for it. I
will fall ill and desperately need it this could be seen as deep emotive language that shows her
desperation and strong will to hold onto her Grandpa forever and the fact that she draws from the
semantic field of health shows that the soup is so important to her it s like a cure or a medicine for all
her illnesses. The desperate people

Microsystem Summary
Johnson (2006) eloquently talks about healthcare systems as cumbersome, unwieldy, unfriendly and
opaque to its users (Johnson, 2006, p. i10). It is the challenge of this post to take the clinical
microsystem where I practice, the HIV Health Service Center clinic, and discuss the interrelationships
of this microsystem to the microsystems of other primary care clinics in the county system. The main
role of the mesosystem is to support the microsystems. According to Bronfenbrenner s ecological
system s theory, the mesosystem contains the relationship between two systems, or between the
primary care clinics in the county system and the macrosystem which contains both the microsystem
and the mesosystem. Moreover, the Multnomah County Health Department could be identified as the
macrosystem here or we could identify the larger state system as the macrosystem. Communication
between systems is an area that could be enhanced to improve overall functioning of the clinics. ...

Team members huddle each morning to coordinate care for the day. Communication between other
primary care clinics is conducted through EPIC, county email and during monthly provider meetings
where all providers meet to discuss policy or attend some form of continuing education to enhance
patient care. Communication with the macro system of the Multnomah County Health Department is
less clearly developed on a daily basis creating a sense of disconnect with the macrosystem.
Nevertheless, one area where the macrosystem clearly sets the pace is in the area of implementing a
trauma informed care approach throughout the county system. Best practices for trauma informed care
is set at the state and federal levels through SAMHSA and is then translated into practice at the meso
and micro system levels. Initially developed at the macrosystem level, policy around trauma informed
care is imbedded in every level of

Music Programs Should be Kept in Schools Essay
All school districts should retain music programs in their schools. Probably the most well known
supposed benefit of involvement in a music program is the Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect claims
that performance on tasks of spatiotemporal reasoning may be improved for ten fifteen minutes
immediately after listening to part of a Mozart piano sonata or similarly complex music (Črnčec,
Wilson, and Prior, 580). While the Mozart Effect has little to back it, there are still many reasons
music and other fine arts belong in schools.
Spatiotemporal reasoning is related to activities involving space and time such as memory, mental
rotation and visualization. However, studies have proven that benefits are inconclusive. Many studies
such as one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One such theory involves private music instruction (Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 582). One on one
private lessons can promote the life long need to learn. Music training started at an early age can
improve the brain s ability to process different tones and patterns. This can benefit a person later in
life when he or she is trying to focus in a room full of background noise.
Ear training, the ability to discern subtleties in pitch and timing, ( Hearing the Music par. 4) increases
aptitude in children and adults when trying to learn a new language. Musicians are better able to pick
out these changing subtleties in speech and tones than non musicians. This skill, when applied to the
learning disabled, improves speech comprehension ( Hearing the Music par. 4).
A 2003 study indicates that two years of music lessons can improve performance on arithmetic tests
(Rauscher and LeMieux qtd. in Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 583). In fact, music lessons can boost IQ
levels simply because they provide a learning opportunity. The most widely cited neuro scientific
theory is one done by Leng and Shaw in 1991 which states:
Music resonates with inherent neuronal firing patterns throughout the brain; thus, music listening and
music instruction can prime the brain for improved performance on spatiotemporal and other cognitive
tasks. (qtd. in Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 585)
These other cognitive tasks include not only arithmetic, but reading, verbal

International Crime And Jurisdiction In The United States
Jurisdiction is the most prominent issue for enforcement officers to deal with international crimes
stemming from the deep web. There are illegal markets for gambling, weapons, explosives,
assassinations, exotic animals, terrorism and hacktivism all of which can be accessed by anyone in the
world if they knew the right ways to get in. The darknet has an international customer base, and cases
can get even more complicated when criminals from different countries start to work together.
Questions of which country s law should be followed and what punishment should be given arise, and
not all parties involved end up satisfied. While it is impossible to please everyone with a trial and
punishment, having an international court disfuses any issue concerning jurisdiction in order to deal
with the criminal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One could argue that the International Criminal Court already exists, and there is no need for another
one. However, the International Criminal Court follows The Rome Statute for jurisdiction which only
allows action to be taken for crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of
aggression. Though there are some crimes committed through the darknet that can fall under this, such
as terrorism, the majority of them do not. This does not mean these crimes are any less

The White Heron By Sarah Jewett
In the short story the White Heron (1886), Sarah Jewett portrays a young little girl, Sylvia, bear the
temptation of money and affection from the young man with mental struggle, and resolutely
determined to protect the fairy of nature a white heron. Through describing Sylvia s authentic
emotions and using of vivid theme colors and exquisite word choice, Jewett delivers the story like
showing a lifelike 19 century country life drama in front of the readers.
The beauty of the story is about authentically conveying the author s emotion experience, depicting
the true feeling of the characters, and delivering the thought process by putting readers into their
shoes, in order to create resonance with the readers, like her emotion for the love of nature, for her
struggle towards money, and for the crush she had towards the hunter. Sylvia s love of nature showed
from As for Sylvia herself, it seemed as if she had never been alive at all before she came to live at the
farm. (5) . She found her real self here, embracing the nature, knowing every life that lived here, and
fully enjoying the freedom in the woods, just like a jungle fairy.
Sylvia s struggle towards the hunter is also lifelike. The hunter used the money to tempt Sylvia, which
drove her crazy. No amount of thought, could decide how many wished for treasure the ten dollars, so
lightly spoken, would buy . (13) It is the original and authentic feeling that most kids can get, but the
author didn t omit the impact of money

How Is Batman Changing
Have you ever had a TV show that you loved so much but it was ruined thanks to new versions of it?
Well Batman Begins by Christopher Nolan is the complete opposite of this. Christopher Nolan toke
the character of Batman and changed it to transform it into a new character by changing the story,
changing his character a bit and changing the characters that are in the story. Changing all of this made
the story fresh and alot more interesting.
In the original batman the story started in November 1939 s Detective #33 a mugger accosted Thomas
Wayne, his wife and son while they were walking home from a movie. He demands Mrs. Wayne s
necklace, Thomas intervenes and is shot; and when Mrs. Wayne calls for help, the mugger shoots her
too.

are so many ways that they are different in because in the movie Batman fights Scarecrow, Ra s Al
Ghul, there is Rachel in the movies Lucius Fox is in the Movies shaping him, with the Scene of Bruce

Economic Analysis of the Airline Industry Introduction The airline industry is one that is both costly
and necessary to the economy. Costly because of the funding provided by the government, recent
layoffs; which has a hand in rising inflation, dealing with negative externalities and high security
risks; necessary because the ease and speed of air travel is needed to keep countries productive and
competitive. It is a key component to the economy. Many businesses rely on air transportation as well
as consumers and individuals employed within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because air travel is not the only means of transportation. A person would like the speed and
convenience of travel by air, but other transportation alternatives exist. Air travel is both a luxury and
a necessity depending on the purpose of its use. For the purpose of vacationing or visiting friends and
family, air travel could be considered a luxury, but for the individual or company who relies on the
speed of air travel to complete business transactions, it would be considered a necessity. The supply
and demand of air travel is impacted by several factors. Air travel is a normal good. The demand for
air travel can diminish slightly because there are other means of safer transportation available. The
demand can also decrease if it becomes too unaffordable. Consumers with a higher income are able to
spend more time vacationing with the use of air transportation. Air travel can be substituted with other
forms of transportation if the income of the consumer decreases. The price elasticity of supply for the
Airline industry however, is inelastic because even with the shifts in demand for air travel, which were
caused by events such as the 9/11 attacks and high gasoline prices, the rates and fares for air travel are
able to be set without being effected by those events. The airline industry provides a transportation

Machiavelli s The Prince Is Call A Classic
Machiavelli The Prince is call a classic. In today s contemporary society I believe that some of
Machiavelli advice would be relevant. His first piece of advice was teaching us how having
knowledge in the military is an important quality that a prince can achieve. Second a person should be
a true friend and a true enemy. Thirdly Machiavelli says do not be generous with your money, you ll
just have to tax harder and you ll lose the support of your citizens. Fourthly in order for a prince to
keep his power he must avoid the hatred of his people. Lastly most of our traits that we learn come
from human nature and we should use these traits to the best of our ability. Machiavelli wrote a
manual on how to rule and govern during the Italian Renaissance. The Italian Renaissance has taken
place several years ago, in today s contemporary society the world is different now. Machiavelli
believed it was better to feared than love. Machiavelli never supported cruelty and violence although,
he did believe that sometimes being cruel and violent would be good for the republic. His social
advice is very useful in today s society. Machiavelli believed that you should stay true yourself and
always keep in mind that everybody isn t always going to do the right thing. Machiavelli states that
how one lives are so far distant from how one ought to live. (chapter1) In today s society we do have
some people who follow laws and do the right thing and on the other hand you have others who break

further confirmed by the band at about 1628 cm 1. Notably, in CuO:Na5mole% and CuO:Na7mole%

Speech On The Media s Speech For A Rethinking By Media...
This cover letter addresses the first essay for English 114, Democracy in the Media in which I critique
and analyze the essay Farewell to Journalism?: Time for a rethinking by media critic Robert
McChesney. I will look specifically at McChesney s claim that American journalism is in peril danger
and that massive government subsidies are the only way to save it, and our democracy. As I analyze
McChesney s claim, I will find major discrepancies within it and will make my own claim that
although McChesney does his best to urge action from the reader he falls short on a number of issues
that are vital to the success of his message. Throughout my paper I will present an idea or research that
McChesney conveys to the reader, and I will explain my thinking and analysis of why it is incorrect
and flawed. As I reflect on the process of creating my paper, I can think of multiple instances in which
I understood the material excellently and analyzed the essay intensely. I think that my practical and
clear thinking is a strong point of my paper as I clearly outline what I feel McChesney has done
incorrect within his argument. You will also see that I address his claim and how the evidence relates
back to the claim many times in my paper as I slowly dissect and further understand his reasoning.
However, as confident as I am in my hard work I know that I struggled with many things throughout
this essay as I began my learning experience at the college level. For instance, I clearly

findings might be associated with medical conditions in connection with extreme neglect that may

subtypes of the disorder which was identified to be caused by pathogenic care as evidenced by
persistent disregard of the child s emotional and physical needs (Corbin, 2007, p. 540). The subtypes

Qualitative And Quantitative
Introduction
This chapter aims in pertaining to the ways of producing and analysing data so that theories can be
tested, accepted and rejected. Since, this study is based on Form V repeaters disposition to study
mathematics in the Mauritian schools, the only way to assure the latest update associated with validity
and reliability of the data is to conduct a research. In order to have a deep understanding of the second
year students, a mixture of different method will be used which include both the qualitative and
quantitative methods.
Qualitative and quantitative research
In a nutshell, there are two main broad approaches used in the investigation of phenomenon which
include; the qualitative and the quantitative approach. One of the main objectives of qualitative
research is to provide a specific and detailed description of the research topic as it is more explanatory
in nature. The qualitative research mainly deals with verbal data rather than measurements and the
employed are mostly observation and interviews. It also has a subjective approach as it seeks to
identify human behaviour and the reasons that direct such behaviour. However, since the researcher is
heavily involved in the process, he or she tends to interpret the data obtained according to their own
biased views which skews the data gathered. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It makes use of tools such as questionnaires, surveys, measurement and other measureable data. The
quantitative research is mainly objective in its approach in the sense that it only seeks precise
measurements. It has to be noted the structure of the quantitative research design has remained static
for centuries. Therefore it has kept its standardise format across many scientific fields and disciplines.
The main strength of making use of this approach is that, it is an excellent way of finalising results

As we have established, freedom of religion is protected by the first amendment. This amendment is
divided between two clauses, the Establishment clause, and the Free exercise clause. While the latter
allows individuals to exercise freely their religious beliefs, the former prevents the government to
impose a federal religion and prevents coercion upon a religious belief. Even though these protections
exist in reality they are easily overcome by compelling government interest . The first amendment
hasn t been very efficient when facing claims of Native Americans, unsurprisingly this is fully in line
with the prior decisions concerning their rights. A problem arises linked with the scope of the freedom
of religion clause. As we know it protects religions, the question is then what is considered as a
religion for it to be protected by the first amendment? As we have said previously, the courts have a
tendency to adopt a Judeo Christian point of view when determining whether a religion is protected by
the first amendment. The question is whether the place given to sacred sites in the Native American
beliefs will rather be understood as a cultural use. Since courts don t protect these lands it seems that
they don t consider it as part of a religious belief, but rather as part of a cultural use, offering monetary
damages instead of protecting it, as in US v Sioux Nation of Indians. A reason that may explain the
position adopted by the courts may be that Indian beliefs seem to

Characteristics Of The Gray Wolves
The species I am writing and researching about is the Gray Wolves. I think Gray Wolves are cool and
very interesting. In this article Gray Wolf, Adult male wolves are explained to average 95 100 pounds,
while adult females average 80 85 pounds. Macalester says, The heaviest wolf ever reported was 175
pounds, found in east central Alaska All wolves fur color is different. You will see the gray color fur
the most on a wolf (Macalester 3).
The gray wolf lives only in a few parts of America. One of the ranges of the gray wolves live in
Alaska, and in the Pacific Northwest. Another range they live in is the Rockies and the great lakes.
They also live in parts of Canada (Parks, 5). The gray wolves are used to live all over the United
States, but they got reduced to certain areas of the United States now (Parks, 5). The gray wolves in a
big amount of area that has a huge population of the prey they eat. A wolf s range is as large as 80 to
300 miles , which is determined by how many prey lives in the region (American Expedition 7).
The gray wolf s habitat areas are huge mountains and big forests. Their habitat needs to have big prey
population for them. Their habitat also should have a place where they can have shelter, and a lair for
them to sleep in (Parks,5). A good place to hear a wolf is at the Yellowstone National Park, which was
first habitat for them (Parks, 5). The wolves can survive in different areas of the environment, such as
the grasslands, and woods.

Pond Scum Analysis
Ancient Greek Philosophers, such as Aristotle and Socrates, were renown for challenging societal
norms and striving for individual achievement. Similarly, Henry David Thoreau endeavored to
experience a fulfilling life, while also questioning the contemporary values of the nineteenth century.
In 2015, Kathryn Schulz, a staff writer at The New Yorker, wrote Pond Scum, a fiery indictment
against Thoreau and his novel Walden. Schulz uses her prodigious talent for wordplay and literary
deconstruction to make her case that Thoreau was a hypocrite and a misanthrope. Yet, Schulz s
argument falls flat by focusing heavily on oversimplification. Pond Scum provides a fresh opportunity
to replace the common idea of Thoreau as a wilderness hermit, with an image of a more complex and
contradictory person to be admired. Thoreau should be praised for attempting to balance his
transcendental beliefs with the joys of living, and finding a way to live a richer life. Unlike the
caricature of the wilderness recluse, Thoreau s views on nature and civilization were more complex.
Thoreau s retreat to the woods was for both spiritual and intellectual inspiration. Even though he spent
two years in the woods, he preferred to only be there occasionally: The poet must, from time to time,
travel the loggers path and the Indian s trail, to drink at some new and more bracing fountain of the
Muses, in the far recesses of the wilderness (Thoreau, The Maine Woods). Thoreau purposefully used
the phrase time to time, to show he preferred his time in the wilderness in mild doses. In The Maine
Woods he expresses his preference for partially cultivated country, which explains his time traveling
around Concord. Thoreau found a middle ground: permanent residence in the partially cultivated land,
with occasional trips into the city and wilderness for inspiration. Schulz belittles Walden as simply
cabin porn, comparing Thoreau s time in the woods to Laura Ingalls Wilder time spent in the woods.
She believes that Wilder lived what Thoreau merely played at, and that Wilder s stories were more
harrowing. However, Thoreau did not live, nor did he recommend, a life fully detached from society.
In fairness to Schultz, most people

Arguments Against Autistics
Fighting Autistic Discrimination: Raising Our Voices for Those Who Cannot
Christine J.A. Burdett

Abstract
Knowledge is power. If people know more about a topic, the better they are prepared to defend and
expand upon it. What is at stake is how the world views those with autism. People need to understand
that autistics simply see everything around them differently, and there is nothing wrong with that. In
fact, creative and unique perspectives can help society shape Earth into a more productive, diverse
place. I hope that the research that I find can add to the foundation that we need if we are to move
forward in that goal. The more that people understand autism, the stronger our communication can be

An Example Of A Nonmaterial Culture In The United States
Nonmaterial culture is defined as the aggregate of values, mores, norms, etc., of a society; the
ideational structure of a culture that provides the values and meanings by which it functions. An
example of this would be religion. Religion although a belief by many throughout the world is
considered nonmaterial. This is someone that worships a God or Gods or even like the Indians
believing in visions after smoking peyote. Is this truly something that would happen or just something
that was believed to have happened because one of their elderly told them that he/she seen a vision.

An example of this is that in the United States we find it alright to ask someone to come to us by
pointing our finger and curling it toward us. In Japan they find it offensive to signal someone to come
to them in this manner. Something as simple as a hug for which we do quite often in the US can be
considered offensive in foreign countries. Weird right? Wow, I could get into a lot of trouble in
countries like this because I am a hugger. When seeing friends out and about we tend to hug each
other as a gesture of missing each other or love for one another. I never knew this because I have
friends from these countries that would find it offensive, maybe they have become Americanized .
Putting your hands in your pocket as many of us have done many, many, many times, this is found to
be rude in several countries. I guess Alanis Morsette would be in trouble also (her song Hand in My
Pocket HAHAHA). I can honestly say that I would also be considered rude because I have a bad habit
of placing my hand or hands in my pocket. I have even been known to walk around with my hands in
my pockets. So I guess I better stay away from places like Austria or the Netherlands. Next time you

Amendments Of The 14th Amendment
During the period after the Civil War, in the Reconstruction era, the United States adopted three
amendments. These three amendments are the 13th, 14th, and 15th. In 1865, the ratification of the
13th amendment abolished slavery (Berlin). The 14th amendment protects privileges and immunities
from abridgement, assures due process of law prior to deprivations of life, liberty, or property, and
prohibits denials of equal protection of the laws (Steiker). The 15th amendment granted African
American men the right to vote. All three of these amendments, known as the Civil Rights
amendments, gave rights and ensured equality to recently emancipated slaves. The law granted rights
to African Americans and protected them from explicitly race based capital codes (Steiker). African
Americans, although had more rights at this point, were still treated with extreme racial hostility,
especially in the Southern states. The law was complicit, as it still allowed for discriminatory
behavior. In The American Death Penalty and the (In)Visibility of Race, Carol Steiker writes, Race
continued to influence the application of facially neutral capital statutes through prosecutorial
discretion, all white sentencing juries, and the practice of extrajudicial execution by lynch mobs. What
this means is that laws were being created in ways that African Americans would still not receive
equal treatment. In certain circumstances law enforcement officers even handed over blacks to lynch
mobs.

Fabrication and characterization of scaffold from Keratin/Alginate blend for tissue engineering
application 3. Result and Discussion: 3.1. Compatibility and structural analysis: The miscibility
property of keratin and alginate was studied by applying X ray diffractometer and Fourier Transform
Infrared Spectroscopy. The XRD spectra of blends were compared to the control spectra of native
keratin and native alginate as mentioned in Figure 1. In XRD spectra, the native keratin and native
alginate give a highest intensity at near 7543 and 4100 at about 19° and 14° angle of 2θ, respectively
[17 19]. The spectra of keratin/alginate blends prepared at a ratio of 10:90, 30:70 and 50:50 gives a
highest intensity peak 3573, 5128 and 3264 at 22°, 6.8° and 7.1° angle of 2θ respectively. The XRD
spectra of all blend ratios gives a new peak in between 6° 8° angle of 2θ which is not present in the
spectra of native keratin and alginate, this depict that the structure of native keratin and alginate
become altered and form a new structural pattern in blend form. The XRD spectra of blend scaffold
revealed that the intensity of blend has transformed as compared to the control XRD spectra which
confirm that the compatibility exists in between keratin and alginate. Several works are reported in
which compatibility between blend components was examined by XRD. For example, Tian et al. [20]

The Spread Of Africa During The Silk Road Era
Africa was a very connected continent during the Silk Road era. A big part of the African culture was
hunting, as hunters lived off the land and used hunting as the main food source. Part of this hunting
lifestyle was painting their faces to blend in while hunting for their tribes. One of the most common
fruits that we have today was domesticated and introduced to the modern world by Africa. Bananas
were only originally domesticated in Africa, then they were introduced to the rest of the world through
trade. Slaves worked on plantations and farmed these to use as a profitable trading material. Gold and
fancy cloths were very valuable resources back then, and Africa had lots of it. Yet again, these were

Fredericksburg where other two battles took place. The Confederate army was led by General Robert

Hooker s army was composed with as many as 130,000 soldiers. The Union army was very well
trained, equipped, and had all odds in favor. The Union army was two times as big as that of General

The Damned If I Do Damned
Damned if I Do, Damned if I Don t There are a number of different ways that knowledge can broaden
our horizons as we go through life. This includes ways in which we go about doing our daily activities
all the way to how we further ourselves in our career paths. Many people do see knowledge as a
benefit, especially for those who are trying to get ahead when it comes to jump starting their careers
within certain industries. All careers require a certain amount of knowledge and skill in order to obtain
the position. However some do see too much knowledge as something that can hinder you from
certain positions. It all depends on how knowledge is applied and how we choose to share that
knowledge in order to benefit ourselves as well as others. We go through 12 years of schooling before
we reach college. Some may feel as if high school is it for them and they have retained all of the
information they need and have learned the proper amount of knowledge needed in order to be
successful in life. However, for others, their path in life is different. Some need to further in
knowledge in order to have a career in higher paying jobs, for example, if you want to be brain
surgeon, I m pretty sure you cannot obtain a career of that nature just off of a high school diploma.
That is definitely common knowledge, of course you re going to need to further your schooling in
order to obtain the skills and tools needed in order to be successful in that career path.

Analyzing Mexican Culture Of Mexico
Analyzing Mexican Culture Directly south of the United States is over 761,000 square miles of land.
It consists of beautiful beaches, high mountains, low coastal plains, high plateaus, and multiple
deserts. Divided into 31 states and 1 federal district, the vast area of land is home to more Spanish
speakers than any other nation in the world. This country, The Estados Unidos Mexicanos (Mexico),
has acquired a rich history, retained government that has remained optimistic about the future, despite
facing frequent hardships, and the influence of past culture remains obvious. The first major
civilization in Mexico, the Olmec, dates back to 1200 BC. They resided in the southern regions of
present day Mexico, and spent the majority of their time nurturing crops, such as corn, beans, chili
peppers, and cotton. They recorded their culture s history using graphic symbols, and took part in
creating fine art and pottery. In 400 BC, the Olmec civilization died out, which gave way to multiple
other civilizations; the 3 most notable are the Mayans, Toltecs, and Aztecs. The Mayans, often
remembered for their intellect, also produced admirable pottery and art. Their arithmetic, writing,
astronomy, and architecture skills surpassed that of their predecessors. The Mayans developed an
extremely accurate calendar, which divided a year into 365 days (Tondering). In addition, they built
large pyramids to reference as calendars. Many of these pyramids remain in Mexico today. One of

Benedict Arnold Motivation
Benedict Arnold, the most recognized name in American History 101 (Kullman, 2015), has become
tantamount with the word traitor. Nowadays, Benedict Arnold has become infamous for his
treacherous plot of giving West Point to the Redcoats, but I like to believe that most people overlook
his paramount embroilment in the early stages of the Revolutionary War and the reasons that he
decided to betray the United States. Arnold s decision wasn t one dimensional. In other words, many
factors were prevalent during the time of his attempt at treason that could have tipped him into the
idea of betraying America.
Born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut, Benedict Arnold appeared to most as an
interesting figure. According to Notable Biographies (n.d.), Arnold was a risk taker who looked for
outlets for his energetic and impulsive (taking action before thinking things through) nature. He
volunteered for the French and Indian War (1754 63), a war fought between France and England in
America for control of the colonial lands, but at eighteen he deserted in order to be with his mother,
who was dying. Arnold s impulsive behavior and his aptitude for war continued to be prevalent in his
life, but one thing that haunted his childhood would have to be death, seeing that three of his siblings
and both his parents died. Arnold s mother passed away in 1759. Secondly, Arnold s father proved to

What Does The Water Symbolize In The Sun Also Rises
Symbolism is used in many novels to express ideas or concepts without directly stating them.
Symbolism can be helpful in generating thoughts without needing deeper explanation from the author
and symbols render interruption of the plot. In Ernest Hemingway s novel, The Sun Also Rises,
symbolism plays a key role in the meaning and themes of the plot. The symbols can be widely
interpreted and used in many different ways but all exclusively aluminate the final themes in the
novel. Hemingway s use of bull fighting, post war handicaps and water throughout the novel directly
relates to the character s feelings and actions in the basic plot while still alluding to deeper meanings.
Within the novel, one key symbol is bull fighting. As the novel progresses, bull fighting stands for
many different things. Primarily, bull fighting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Water is a commonly used symbol of cleansing or peace, and in this book, Hemingway uses water to
symbolize both. Across the novel, when Jake leaves his friends and is away from his pain (Brett),
water is clearly present, representing peace and happiness. The two times that Jake is alone and
relaxing, when fishing and when in San Sebastian, he describes the water vividly and emphasizes
nature s presence. Then in the quiet water I turned and floated. Floating I saw only the sky, and felt the
drop and lift of the swells... The water was buoyant and cold. It felt as though you could never sink

The Threat Of Terrorist Groups Place High Value
There is substantial evidence which supports the idea that terrorist groups place high value is using
shoulder fire MANPAD weapon systems to destroy civilian jet aircraft. Successfully attacking a
civilian plane not only poses a great economic threat by effectively shutting down the commercial
aviation industry, it would also create a loss of confidence in the United States ability to defend itself
which, in of itself, holds great symbolic value. While the previous post examined mitigation strategies
centered around the aircraft, this post examines potential strategies that may be used to minimize the
threat from the ground, or more specifically, the airport. While no one strategy offers the ability to
completely eliminate the threat, there is existing literature which offers potential strategies through a
multi layered approach.
Designing any sort of counter MANPAD strategy will likely cost a great amount of money, and airport
planners will have to convince stakeholders the potential risk of a MANPAD incident. A coordinated
or well planned attack which results in catastrophic loss of life and aircraft(s) would likely have
cascading affects throughout the aviation industry, significantly effecting commerce and travel. It must
therefore be understood that any front end investment, in millions, could likely insure continued daily
operations in the event of a planned attack and preserve billions in potentially lost revenue on the back
end.

How Did Christopher Columbus Discovered America
The one thing we expect is for teachers to give us an education, that is true, but then why is,
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, one of the most famously false concepts known
to Americans? Leif Erikson was the one that discovered America in the times around 100 E.D. He was
on his way to Greenland to spread christianity commanded by the Norwegian King, when he got off
course, and landed on a different location, which he called Vinland where he stayed for 6 months. He
describes these people who were very mean, and he didn t get along with at all, this is why he did not
bring anyone here after discovering it. It is also very possible that he, if not landed in America, landed
in the North American Continent because of how close ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These people are the reason when he left, he never returned to America, and told people it was a place
people did not want to go. This is one of the big reason we do not say that he is the one that
discovered America, because he did not want his people to leave with these people. Unlike Columbus
though, he did not just want to wipe out a whole population of people. No one knows exactly where he
landed, but if not in America it was on the North American continent. This is because of how close it
was to Greenland that they know that coming from the direction of Norway. The way he describes
where he came from, and how the weather is pretty much describes completely how America was at
the time he found it. These reasons make Leif Erikson a very strong candidate for the competition, of
who discovered America. There are a lot of people in the running for who discovered America that
philosophers are looking at, but Erikson seems to have the most proof. Christopher Columbus is the
one that takes the winning trophy for discovering America, even though if you do any research you
can see that he is not, but that is alright. Leif Erikson might not be the reason the reason we call this
land America, but he is the first person to step foot on

The Devil s Arithmetic By Jane Yolen
It is difficult for anyone to truly understand devastating situations that occur in our history unless we
actually experience them ourselves. No matter how much we research, how many pictures we observe,
or even the personal stories from the individuals who endure those hard times. We can imagine the
pain and tragedy of it, however, can we truly understand it? In The Devil s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen,
is a character named Hannah Stern who undergoes a glimpse of such a tragedy and completely shifts
her outlook on her family s history in the Holocaust. Throughout the story, Hannah depicts an
unappreciative hora towards remembering the past of her family, subsequently she receives the
glimpse of the past and completely transforms her attitude. Hannah attended a Seder that her
grandparents performed for Passover. Before she arrived, Hannah made excuses that she did not know
it was Passover, or that she forgot about it, and how she already ate to be excused from it. Her mother
explained the importance of remembering to her, which Hannah replied with, All Jewish holidays are
about remembering, Mama. I m tired of remembering (Yolen 4). Already demonstrating her
indifference about remembering what took place so long ago, one receives the sense that Hannah is
simply another teenager that is ignorant towards such important events in life. Her ignorance is also
demonstrated when Hannah had been younger and took a fascination in the number on her grandpa s
arm, therefore she thought

The Themes Of Writing In A Small Place By Jamaica Kincaid
Authors use a variety of writing techniques in their pieces of literature to exemplify their ideas and
message to the audience. The use of different writing techniques also helps make pieces of literature
more comprehensible and sophisticated. The author of A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaid, uses
numerous writing techniques that help to portray the novel s message. Jamaica Kincaid displays an
array of writing techniques in the novel such as repetition, rhetorical questions and the use of you to
demonstrate her thoughts about colonization.
Repetition is used numerous times in the novel to further depict Kincaid s thoughts and ideas. By
using repetition, the author is portraying the thought as a rant as well as in a more aggressive and
serious tone. This is displayed in the novel when Kincaid says ...maybe they weren t from the real
England at all but from another England, one we were not familiar with, not at all from the England
we were told about... . In this quote, Kincaid is repeating word England in order to further emphasize
how god like England is. Kincaid is expressing how England is a place that is not within their reach
and that it is placed only for the chosen ones. Kincaid expresses these thoughts in her initial reaction
to the atrocious behavior of the Europeans. This quote also displays the effect of colonization on
people like Kincaid. The shock that Kincaid experienced is proof that she thought very highly of the
Europeans and was dismayed as soon as she found out about who they truly are. During the time of
colonization, everyone was made to believe how close to God Europeans are and were forced to
acknowledge how superior they were compared to them. Another quote that demonstrated the use of
rhetorical questions is when Kincaid says Antigua is a small place. Antigua is a very small place. In
Antigua, not only is the event turned into every day, but the everyday is turned into an event . In the
quote, the phrase that is being repeated is Antigua is a small place . In this quote, Kincaid is trying to
emphasize the fact that Antigua is a small place compared to the rest of the world. By saying small
place, Kincaid was not only trying to convey how small Antigua is based on its land but as well as

I Believe In Sport
I believe in sports. I have been playing sports since i was 7 years old, sports such as basketball,
football, and soccer. I play organized, in the street, or at the park, anywhere or anytime i can get my
hands on a ball, I will play.
Working hard is a big part of playing sports. Hard work usually beats out talent. I run 2 miles a day to
condition my body and get in healthy and physical shape. I shoot 500 free throws a day to become a
better basketball player and improve my shooting.I practice 2 hours a day doing drills to improve my
defense, dribbling, shooting, and more.
Playing sports has really gained me many of new friends and brothers. Playing basketball helped me

A Look at Ethical Perspectives Essay example
A Look at Ethical Perspectives While it would be nice to think that it is easy to make decisions and all
come to the same conclusion, this is not always the case. Unfortunately, even regarding ethical
decisions where you may think a right and wrong way exist may not be easy to determine. Since
everyone has different backgrounds and therefore, different perspectives, we may not agree on what
the best course of action is to take in a difficult decision. While I believe that character is the most
important, someone else may think that as long as the majority is satisfied that their decision is best.
An exercise created by the Williams Institute for Ethics and Management looks at four different
perspectives which are referred to using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately the boss found someone else to lie to the customer, but when he needed to find someone to
trust, he would go to Matt. Not every decision is this easy to make, but through study and close
attention to mistakes made by myself and others, I am able to increase the wisdom needed to give a
virtuous answer.
Obligation
The names of the perspectives speak mostly for themselves. Obligation is making sure that the
decision that is made is fair to all and that everyone is treated as equals (Weiss, 2006). The thought is
that we should have a duty to all humanity. This however, presents a challenge when attempting to
make a prompt decision and having to analyze the consequences that it will have on everyone. When
choices are made from this perspective, an individual may not use his or her first thought of what is
right or wrong, but instead what they think the majority of people would identify as being right.
Generally this would be very similar to the character perspective as considering the effect on society
as a whole would be an honest choice; however, this may not always be the case. When I consider
integrity, I think of Godly values which are occasionally distorted by society due to man believing that
he knows what is best.
Results
In most business decisions, organizations have to determine if the ends justify the means. This is the
correct method most of the time, but may not be acceptable in all ethical decisions. However, someone
who has this

How Did Exxel Differentiate Itself From Other Private... 1) What was the key strategy that Navarro pursued from 1991 on to establish Exxel as a leading Latin American private equity organization? How did Exxel differentiate itself from other private equity competitors? Juan Navarro, the former Chairman of Citigroup Capital Investors S.A. (CCI) in Buenos Aires, founded the Exxel Group in 1991. Due to his family s influential background in Uruguayan and Argentine political and financial establishments, as well as his own work with the CCI, Navarro was well connected and highly experienced in the financial and political sectors, and in private equity itself. The political situation in Latin America at the time was fairly unstable and the launching of the modern Argentine economic policy in 1991 saw ... Furthermore, it opened up more development opportunities for their portfolio companies, as U.S. investors could transfer their experience from the American market to the Argentine environment. Exxel s fund devotion was mainly to invest in buyouts, recapitalizations, privatizations and mergers of Argentine firms. Each fund was always devoted to a single transaction, which had the advantage of being very focused on and informed about the transaction itself, as well as all corresponding circumstances. To differentiate itself from other private equity groups, Exxel built on Navarro s unique strength: his ability to originate deals, based on his strong ties with local business community [!], and then to add value to these enterprises . Exxel also put diligent work in their target selection. To maximize the success rates, they first picked the most attractive industries, and then chose the best firms within those industries. To achieve an even stronger partnership with their portfolio companies, Navarro and his team would then work on the development of a network of service ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Justice Department was investigating the company s March 2006 agreement with Canadian generic drug manufacturer Apotex. The agreement was intended to delay the Apotex s release of an inexpensive generic version of Plavix. Under the terms of Bristol Myers ill conceived agreement with Apotex, BMS offered Apotex $40 million to halt production of the generic Plavix until June 1, 2011. This date was five months before the Plavix patent was set to expire. Bristol Myers also agreed not to release its own non branded Plavix until six months after Apotex began to sell its generic version of the blood thinner. When asked to approve the agreement, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state Attorneys General objected to these provisions. They labelled the Bristol Myers concession anti competitive because it assured that Apotex would be the sole market vendor of cheap, generic Plavix for at least six months. So, Bristol Myers Squibb agreed to remove the anti competitive provision from the contract. Nevertheless, the FTC began questioning Apotex regarding the revised agreement. During these questioning sessions, Apotex told the federal regulators that Bristol Myers had given Apotex private assurance that it would not release a general version of Plavix to the market. ... • 4. Nussbaum s Overlapping Consensus Humans are notoriously fickle, stubborn beings. Because of this, it is difficult to categorize/measure every humans viewpoint in one condensed set of capabilities. Nussbaum does an adequate job of making her list of capabilities broad, but a select number of them are not as applicable as others. While Nussbaum s list of core capabilities is decisively somewhat universally inclusive, I believe Nussbaum s list of capabilities in its entirety fails to captivate the sense of universalness that Rawls s overlapping consensus encompasses, and believe that it cannot be applied universally. While a number of Nussbaum s core capabilities potentially applies to enough people to consider it universal, others do not fit the bill quite as well, thus tainting the universalness of the entire bunch. Furthermore, the concept of comprehensive education that can be easily accessed by all is extremely necessary, in my mind, and allows for our collective society to move forward in a way the benefits everyone. Emotions, is also an equally necessary capability that should be included. Autonomy And Professionalism Finally, at the heart at which governs how doctors act and behave are the four principles of medical ethics (autonomy, beneficence, non maleficence, justice) and professionalism. From a BH tutorial on ethics and professionalism, there was a case in which an elderly man s vision was slightly below the values required to drive. If one was to come to a straightforward conclusion, it will be that as a doctor you will not sign his medical report form stating his medical fitness to drive. Despite showing justice and non maleficence to the patient, there is a conflict between autonomy and beneficence. However if the doctor was to sign it, it would put people on the road at risk. • 6. Food can be significant in people s lives for many... Both Titus Andronicus and Grandpa s soup serve the purpose of entertaining the reader in juxtaposing ways. Titus Andronicus is illustrative of the alarming horror that certain types of cooking and food reinforce, whereas Grandpa s soup is representative of the warmth and affection that certain types of food and cooking can bring. Themes portrayed in these texts such as death, mortality, celebration, desperation, love and hate are looked at from completely different angles through the literary techniques displayed by both writers, which will be analyzed and discussed in this essay. First of all, the celebratory atmosphere created in both texts highlight the horror/happiness. For example, in Titus Andronicus, ingredients of human flesh ... In contrast, Grandpa s Soup signifies that Grandpa s cooking provides her with genuine pleasure not just contentment or satisfaction but something greater therefore she goes onto talk about her fear of losing him, which overcasts a melancholic shadow over the whole poem. The writer understands that death is a natural process that she cannot stop but she goes on to say how it will affect her living life as she will be emotionally torn apart and carry the burden of pain throughout with the absence of her Grandpa and his remedial soup. There is evidence of figurative language that is very effective in outlining and comprehending the character s point of view in Grandpa s Soup for example the simile like a rich island in the middle of the soup sea . The hyperbole assists in getting her ideas across. Describing the soup as a sea represents the depth of the character s feelings associated with the soup, and her Grandpa. This is reinforced by the yearning that is evident through her language, for example he knows I will grow and pine for it. I will fall ill and desperately need it this could be seen as deep emotive language that shows her desperation and strong will to hold onto her Grandpa forever and the fact that she draws from the semantic field of health shows that the soup is so important to her it s like a cure or a medicine for all her illnesses. It is the challenge of this post to take the clinical microsystem where I practice, the HIV Health Service Center clinic, and discuss the interrelationships of this microsystem to the microsystems of other primary care clinics in the county system. The main role of the mesosystem is to support the microsystems. According to Bronfenbrenner s ecological system s theory, the mesosystem contains the relationship between two systems, or between the primary care clinics in the county system and the macrosystem which contains both the microsystem and the mesosystem. • 9. Music Programs Should be Kept in Schools Essay All school districts should retain music programs in their schools. Probably the most well known supposed benefit of involvement in a music program is the Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect claims that performance on tasks of spatiotemporal reasoning may be improved for ten fifteen minutes immediately after listening to part of a Mozart piano sonata or similarly complex music (Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior, 580). While the Mozart Effect has little to back it, there are still many reasons music and other fine arts belong in schools. Spatiotemporal reasoning is related to activities involving space and time such as memory, mental rotation and visualization. However, studies have proven that benefits are inconclusive. Many studies such as one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One such theory involves private music instruction (Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 582). One on one private lessons can promote the life long need to learn. Music training started at an early age can improve the brain s ability to process different tones and patterns. This can benefit a person later in life when he or she is trying to focus in a room full of background noise. Ear training, the ability to discern subtleties in pitch and timing, ( Hearing the Music par. 4) increases aptitude in children and adults when trying to learn a new language. Musicians are better able to pick out these changing subtleties in speech and tones than non musicians. This skill, when applied to the learning disabled, improves speech comprehension ( Hearing the Music par. 4). A 2003 study indicates that two years of music lessons can improve performance on arithmetic tests (Rauscher and LeMieux qtd. in Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 583). In fact, music lessons can boost IQ levels simply because they provide a learning opportunity. The most widely cited neuro scientific theory is one done by Leng and Shaw in 1991 which states: Music resonates with inherent neuronal firing patterns throughout the brain; thus, music listening and music instruction can prime the brain for improved performance on spatiotemporal and other cognitive tasks. (qtd. in Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 585) These other cognitive tasks include not only arithmetic, but reading, verbal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Costly because of the funding provided by the government, recent layoffs; which has a hand in rising inflation, dealing with negative externalities and high security risks; necessary because the ease and speed of air travel is needed to keep countries productive and competitive. This is because air travel is not the only means of transportation. A person would like the speed and convenience of travel by air, but other transportation alternatives exist. Air travel is both a luxury and a necessity depending on the purpose of its use. For the purpose of vacationing or visiting friends and family, air travel could be considered a luxury, but for the individual or company who relies on the speed of air travel to complete business transactions, it would be considered a necessity. The supply and demand of air travel is impacted by several factors. Air travel is a normal good. The demand for air travel can diminish slightly because there are other means of safer transportation available. The demand can also decrease if it becomes too unaffordable. Consumers with a higher income are able to spend more time vacationing with the use of air transportation. Air travel can be substituted with other forms of transportation if the income of the consumer decreases. The price elasticity of supply for the Airline industry however, is inelastic because even with the shifts in demand for air travel, which were caused by events such as the 9/11 attacks and high gasoline prices, the rates and fares for air travel are able to be set without being effected by those events. His first piece of advice was teaching us how having knowledge in the military is an important quality that a prince can achieve. Second a person should be a true friend and a true enemy. Thirdly Machiavelli says do not be generous with your money, you ll just have to tax harder and you ll lose the support of your citizens. Fourthly in order for a prince to keep his power he must avoid the hatred of his people. Lastly most of our traits that we learn come from human nature and we should use these traits to the best of our ability. Machiavelli wrote a manual on how to rule and govern during the Italian Renaissance. The Italian Renaissance has taken place several years ago, in today s contemporary society the world is different now. Machiavelli believed it was better to feared than love. Machiavelli never supported cruelty and violence although, he did believe that sometimes being cruel and violent would be good for the republic. His social advice is very useful in today s society. Machiavelli believed that you should stay true yourself and always keep in mind that everybody isn t always going to do the right thing. Machiavelli states that how one lives are so far distant from how one ought to live. This cover letter addresses the first essay for English 114, Democracy in the Media in which I critique and analyze the essay Farewell to Journalism?: Time for a rethinking by media critic Robert McChesney. I will look specifically at McChesney s claim that American journalism is in peril danger and that massive government subsidies are the only way to save it, and our democracy. As I analyze McChesney s claim, I will find major discrepancies within it and will make my own claim that although McChesney does his best to urge action from the reader he falls short on a number of issues that are vital to the success of his message. Throughout my paper I will present an idea or research that McChesney conveys to the reader, and I will explain my thinking and analysis of why it is incorrect and flawed. As I reflect on the process of creating my paper, I can think of multiple instances in which I understood the material excellently and analyzed the essay intensely. I think that my practical and clear thinking is a strong point of my paper as I clearly outline what I feel McChesney has done incorrect within his argument. You will also see that I address his claim and how the evidence relates back to the claim many times in my paper as I slowly dissect and further understand his reasoning. Qualitative and quantitative research In a nutshell, there are two main broad approaches used in the investigation of phenomenon which include; the qualitative and the quantitative approach. One of the main objectives of qualitative research is to provide a specific and detailed description of the research topic as it is more explanatory in nature. The qualitative research mainly deals with verbal data rather than measurements and the employed are mostly observation and interviews. It also has a subjective approach as it seeks to identify human behaviour and the reasons that direct such behaviour. • 22. Argumentative Essay On Freedom Of Religion As we have established, freedom of religion is protected by the first amendment. This amendment is divided between two clauses, the Establishment clause, and the Free exercise clause. While the latter allows individuals to exercise freely their religious beliefs, the former prevents the government to impose a federal religion and prevents coercion upon a religious belief. Even though these protections exist in reality they are easily overcome by compelling government interest . The first amendment hasn t been very efficient when facing claims of Native Americans, unsurprisingly this is fully in line with the prior decisions concerning their rights. A problem arises linked with the scope of the freedom of religion clause. As we know it protects religions, the question is then what is considered as a religion for it to be protected by the first amendment? As we have said previously, the courts have a tendency to adopt a Judeo Christian point of view when determining whether a religion is protected by the first amendment. The question is whether the place given to sacred sites in the Native American beliefs will rather be understood as a cultural use. Since courts don t protect these lands it seems that they don t consider it as part of a religious belief, but rather as part of a cultural use, offering monetary damages instead of protecting it, as in US v Sioux Nation of Indians. A reason that may explain the position adopted by the courts may be that Indian beliefs seem to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Pond Scum Analysis Ancient Greek Philosophers, such as Aristotle and Socrates, were renown for challenging societal norms and striving for individual achievement. Similarly, Henry David Thoreau endeavored to experience a fulfilling life, while also questioning the contemporary values of the nineteenth century. In 2015, Kathryn Schulz, a staff writer at The New Yorker, wrote Pond Scum, a fiery indictment against Thoreau and his novel Walden. Schulz uses her prodigious talent for wordplay and literary deconstruction to make her case that Thoreau was a hypocrite and a misanthrope. Yet, Schulz s argument falls flat by focusing heavily on oversimplification. Pond Scum provides a fresh opportunity to replace the common idea of Thoreau as a wilderness hermit, with an image of a more complex and contradictory person to be admired. Thoreau should be praised for attempting to balance his transcendental beliefs with the joys of living, and finding a way to live a richer life. Unlike the caricature of the wilderness recluse, Thoreau s views on nature and civilization were more complex. Thoreau s retreat to the woods was for both spiritual and intellectual inspiration. Even though he spent two years in the woods, he preferred to only be there occasionally: The poet must, from time to time, travel the loggers path and the Indian s trail, to drink at some new and more bracing fountain of the Muses, in the far recesses of the wilderness (Thoreau, The Maine Woods). Thoreau purposefully used the phrase time to time, to show he preferred his time in the wilderness in mild doses. In The Maine Woods he expresses his preference for partially cultivated country, which explains his time traveling around Concord. Thoreau found a middle ground: permanent residence in the partially cultivated land, with occasional trips into the city and wilderness for inspiration. Schulz belittles Walden as simply cabin porn, comparing Thoreau s time in the woods to Laura Ingalls Wilder time spent in the woods. She believes that Wilder lived what Thoreau merely played at, and that Wilder s stories were more harrowing. However, Thoreau did not live, nor did he recommend, a life fully detached from society. In fairness to Schultz, most people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Amendments Of The 14th Amendment During the period after the Civil War, in the Reconstruction era, the United States adopted three amendments. These three amendments are the 13th, 14th, and 15th. In 1865, the ratification of the 13th amendment abolished slavery (Berlin). The 14th amendment protects privileges and immunities from abridgement, assures due process of law prior to deprivations of life, liberty, or property, and prohibits denials of equal protection of the laws (Steiker). The 15th amendment granted African American men the right to vote. All three of these amendments, known as the Civil Rights amendments, gave rights and ensured equality to recently emancipated slaves. The law granted rights to African Americans and protected them from explicitly race based capital codes (Steiker). African Americans, although had more rights at this point, were still treated with extreme racial hostility, especially in the Southern states. The law was complicit, as it still allowed for discriminatory behavior. In The American Death Penalty and the (In)Visibility of Race, Carol Steiker writes, Race continued to influence the application of facially neutral capital statutes through prosecutorial discretion, all white sentencing juries, and the practice of extrajudicial execution by lynch mobs. What this means is that laws were being created in ways that African Americans would still not receive equal treatment. In certain circumstances law enforcement officers even handed over blacks to lynch mobs. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Result and Discussion: 3.1. Compatibility and structural analysis: The miscibility property of keratin and alginate was studied by applying X ray diffractometer and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The XRD spectra of blends were compared to the control spectra of native keratin and native alginate as mentioned in Figure 1. In XRD spectra, the native keratin and native alginate give a highest intensity at near 7543 and 4100 at about 19° and 14° angle of 2θ, respectively [17 19]. The spectra of keratin/alginate blends prepared at a ratio of 10:90, 30:70 and 50:50 gives a highest intensity peak 3573, 5128 and 3264 at 22°, 6.8° and 7.1° angle of 2θ respectively. The XRD spectra of all blend ratios gives a new peak in between 6° 8° angle of 2θ which is not present in the spectra of native keratin and alginate, this depict that the structure of native keratin and alginate become altered and form a new structural pattern in blend form. The XRD spectra of blend scaffold revealed that the intensity of blend has transformed as compared to the control XRD spectra which confirm that the compatibility exists in between keratin and alginate. The Threat Of Terrorist Groups Place High Value There is substantial evidence which supports the idea that terrorist groups place high value is using shoulder fire MANPAD weapon systems to destroy civilian jet aircraft. Successfully attacking a civilian plane not only poses a great economic threat by effectively shutting down the commercial aviation industry, it would also create a loss of confidence in the United States ability to defend itself which, in of itself, holds great symbolic value. While the previous post examined mitigation strategies centered around the aircraft, this post examines potential strategies that may be used to minimize the threat from the ground, or more specifically, the airport. While no one strategy offers the ability to completely eliminate the threat, there is existing literature which offers potential strategies through a multi layered approach. Designing any sort of counter MANPAD strategy will likely cost a great amount of money, and airport planners will have to convince stakeholders the potential risk of a MANPAD incident. A coordinated or well planned attack which results in catastrophic loss of life and aircraft(s) would likely have cascading affects throughout the aviation industry, significantly effecting commerce and travel. How Did Christopher Columbus Discovered America The one thing we expect is for teachers to give us an education, that is true, but then why is, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, one of the most famously false concepts known to Americans? Leif Erikson was the one that discovered America in the times around 100 E.D. He was on his way to Greenland to spread christianity commanded by the Norwegian King, when he got off course, and landed on a different location, which he called Vinland where he stayed for 6 months. He describes these people who were very mean, and he didn t get along with at all, this is why he did not bring anyone here after discovering it. It is also very possible that he, if not landed in America, landed in the North American Continent because of how close ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These people are the reason when he left, he never returned to America, and told people it was a place people did not want to go. This is one of the big reason we do not say that he is the one that discovered America, because he did not want his people to leave with these people. Unlike Columbus though, he did not just want to wipe out a whole population of people. No one knows exactly where he landed, but if not in America it was on the North American continent. This is because of how close it was to Greenland that they know that coming from the direction of Norway. The way he describes where he came from, and how the weather is pretty much describes completely how America was at the time he found it. These reasons make Leif Erikson a very strong candidate for the competition, of who discovered America. There are a lot of people in the running for who discovered America that philosophers are looking at, but Erikson seems to have the most proof. Christopher Columbus is the one that takes the winning trophy for discovering America, even though if you do any research you can see that he is not, but that is alright. Leif Erikson might not be the reason the reason we call this land America, but he is the first person to step foot on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Devil s Arithmetic By Jane Yolen It is difficult for anyone to truly understand devastating situations that occur in our history unless we actually experience them ourselves. No matter how much we research, how many pictures we observe, or even the personal stories from the individuals who endure those hard times. We can imagine the pain and tragedy of it, however, can we truly understand it? In The Devil s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, is a character named Hannah Stern who undergoes a glimpse of such a tragedy and completely shifts her outlook on her family s history in the Holocaust. Throughout the story, Hannah depicts an unappreciative hora towards remembering the past of her family, subsequently she receives the glimpse of the past and completely transforms her attitude. Hannah attended a Seder that her grandparents performed for Passover. Before she arrived, Hannah made excuses that she did not know it was Passover, or that she forgot about it, and how she already ate to be excused from it. Her mother explained the importance of remembering to her, which Hannah replied with, All Jewish holidays are about remembering, Mama. I m tired of remembering (Yolen 4). Already demonstrating her indifference about remembering what took place so long ago, one receives the sense that Hannah is simply another teenager that is ignorant towards such important events in life. Her ignorance is also demonstrated when Hannah had been younger and took a fascination in the number on her grandpa s arm, therefore she thought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Themes Of Writing In A Small Place By Jamaica Kincaid Authors use a variety of writing techniques in their pieces of literature to exemplify their ideas and message to the audience. The use of different writing techniques also helps make pieces of literature more comprehensible and sophisticated. The author of A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaid, uses numerous writing techniques that help to portray the novel s message. Jamaica Kincaid displays an array of writing techniques in the novel such as repetition, rhetorical questions and the use of you to demonstrate her thoughts about colonization. Repetition is used numerous times in the novel to further depict Kincaid s thoughts and ideas. By using repetition, the author is portraying the thought as a rant as well as in a more aggressive and serious tone. This is displayed in the novel when Kincaid says ...maybe they weren t from the real England at all but from another England, one we were not familiar with, not at all from the England we were told about... . In this quote, Kincaid is repeating word England in order to further emphasize how god like England is. Kincaid is expressing how England is a place that is not within their reach and that it is placed only for the chosen ones. Kincaid expresses these thoughts in her initial reaction to the atrocious behavior of the Europeans. This quote also displays the effect of colonization on people like Kincaid. The shock that Kincaid experienced is proof that she thought very highly of the Europeans and was dismayed as soon as she found out about who they truly are. During the time of colonization, everyone was made to believe how close to God Europeans are and were forced to acknowledge how superior they were compared to them. Another quote that demonstrated the use of rhetorical questions is when Kincaid says Antigua is a small place. Antigua is a very small place. In Antigua, not only is the event turned into every day, but the everyday is turned into an event . In the quote, the phrase that is being repeated is Antigua is a small place . In this quote, Kincaid is trying to emphasize the fact that Antigua is a small place compared to the rest of the world. • 47. A Look at Ethical Perspectives Essay example A Look at Ethical Perspectives While it would be nice to think that it is easy to make decisions and all come to the same conclusion, this is not always the case. Unfortunately, even regarding ethical decisions where you may think a right and wrong way exist may not be easy to determine. Since everyone has different backgrounds and therefore, different perspectives, we may not agree on what the best course of action is to take in a difficult decision. While I believe that character is the most important, someone else may think that as long as the majority is satisfied that their decision is best. An exercise created by the Williams Institute for Ethics and Management looks at four different perspectives which are referred to using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately the boss found someone else to lie to the customer, but when he needed to find someone to trust, he would go to Matt. Not every decision is this easy to make, but through study and close attention to mistakes made by myself and others, I am able to increase the wisdom needed to give a virtuous answer. Obligation The names of the perspectives speak mostly for themselves. Obligation is making sure that the decision that is made is fair to all and that everyone is treated as equals (Weiss, 2006). The thought is that we should have a duty to all humanity. This however, presents a challenge when attempting to make a prompt decision and having to analyze the consequences that it will have on everyone. When choices are made from this perspective, an individual may not use his or her first thought of what is right or wrong, but instead what they think the majority of people would identify as being right. Generally this would be very similar to the character perspective as considering the effect on society as a whole would be an honest choice; however, this may not always be the case. When I consider integrity, I think of Godly values which are occasionally distorted by society due to man believing that he knows what is best. Results In most business decisions, organizations have to determine if the ends justify the means. This is the correct method most of the time, but may not be acceptable in all ethical decisions. However, someone who has this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
