LSC Men's Basketball Weekly Release (02/20/17)
1. LSC MEN’S BASKETBALL
Tarleton State has a one-game advantage over UT Permian Basin in the Lone Star Conference standings with
two games left. Tarleton plays at UTPB Thursday and at West Texas A&M Saturday with the LSC title on the
line.
The Tarleton at WT game in Canyon on February 25 was added to the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase
and will air on the American Sports Network and NCAA.com.
The last week of action will determine the eight teams and seeding for the LSC Championship, set for March
2-5 in Allen, Texas.
The LSC men have a 156-102 overall record so far this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s
teams are currently 21-6 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 14-4 against the Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
James McPherson, UT Permian Basin, JR, Guard, Ann Arbor, Mich., Robichaud
McPherson helped lead the Falcons to a pair of close road wins this past week, averaging 25 points per game
in a 93-90 win at Angelo State and an 87-81 triple overtime victory at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Lone Star
Conference leader in 3-point percentage went off again this week from deep, hitting 8-13 from beyond the arc
against Angelo State to end the game with 29 points to lead all players. He came back to shoot 5-8 from deep
to score 21 points against the Javelinas. He played all 40 minutes against Angelo State and followed that with
a 47-minute night in the 3OT contest two days later. McPherson is now averaging 14.7 ppg and is shooting 43
percent from 3-point on the year.
DEFENSIVE
Marquieth Russell, Texas A&M University-Commerce, JR, Forward, St. Louis, Mo., W.E. Boswell HS
Russell was a menace for the Lions on the defensive end last week. He recorded five blocks in the Lions’ upset
win over No. 9 Tarleton State, including three in the first two minutes of the game. Russell also snagged four
rebounds in 20 minutes on the floor. Four of his blocks came in the first half when the Lions held the Texans to
37.5 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent from behind the arc.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Chantz Chambers, Tarleton State University, scored a career-high 33 points against Texas A&M-Commerce
on Thursday. Chambers went 11-19 from the floor and scored 18 of his 33 points in the second half while nearly
helping the Texans overcome a double-digit deficit in the final five minutes of play. Chambers also grabbed
eight rebounds with five coming on the offensive end. It’s the first 30-point scoring effort for a Tarleton player
since 2015.
Quay King, Angelo State University, made exactly half of his shots in the Rams’ pair of games this past week.
The senior guard totaled a career-high 31 points on ASU’s senior day against West Texas A&M. The point total
was the highest for a Ram all season, and he hit 8 of 13 three-pointers, falling just one short of the ASU single
game record for made threes.
Delvonte Pierre, Cameron University, led the Aggies with 23 points per game in last week’s split against
Western and Eastern New Mexico. Against the Mustangs, he scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in the
86-66 win. Two days later, Pierre had a career high 31 points, while going 7-12 from three-point range in the
overtime loss to ENMU. Pierre was 11-17 from the field against the Greyhounds before fouling out late in the
fourth quarter. For the week, he shot over 58 percent from the field and over 47 percent from the perimeter.
Pierre is now averaging 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game on the season.
Igor Ibaka, Midwestern State University, notched consecutive double-doubles to lead MSU to a LSC split
last week while snapping a six-game slide. The 6-8, 240-pound forward ranks 10th in NCAA Division II with 13
double-doubles going for 24 points and 10 rebounds against Eastern New Mexico and 16 points and 13 boards
in a win over Western New Mexico. The ultra-skilled big man shot 57.9 percent from the field (11-of-19) and
89.5 percent from the charity stripe (17-of-19) while grabbing 18 defensive rebounds. Ibaka blocked a season-
high four shots against ENMU on his way to averaging 20 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for the week.
Malik Albert, Texas A&M University-Commerce, got the job done on the offensive side of the ball for the
Lions in their win over Tarleton State on Thursday. He finished with 19 points and shot 50 percent from the
field and 50 percent from behind the arc. He also made the most of his chances from the line, shooting 75
percent from the charity stripe. Albert also had two assists and four rebounds. He is fourth in the conference
in scoring, third in field goal percentage and first in steals.
Willie McCray, Western New Mexico, led the team in scoring and assists against Cameron and Midwestern
State. McCray tallied 32 points, with a high of 19 against MSU. He dished out a high in assists with six versus
CU. He shot well from the field making 11-25 and also added two rebounds and three steals in averaging 32.5
minutes per game.
Ryan Quaid, West Texas A&M University, had a big weekend for the Buffs as they finished off their regular
season road schedule with a Thursday night loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville followed by a big win over Angelo
State on Saturday. The sophomore went 14-of-20 (.700) from the floor including 2-of-5 (.400) from the free
throw line to go along with 11 rebounds (10 offensive, 1 defensive) and two assists. The Fort Collins native
had a career day on Saturday as he went 11-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the free throw line with nine

Lamarquis Thompson, Eastern New Mexico
University, knocked down two shots to put Eastern
ahead for good en route to a 2-0 record this past
weekend. Against Midwestern, the junior nailed
a jump shot from the corner with 23 seconds left
to give the Greyhounds the lead for good. In the
overtime win over Cameron, the Houston native
banged home a three from the wing with 2:28 to play
to put ENMU ahead. Thompson came up with his first
double-double in an ENMU uniform, pulling down 15
boards in the win, the most by any ENMU player this
season. Over the weekend, he averaged a double-
double and snagged five steals.

Romond Jenkins, Tarleton State University,
registered his LSC-leading 15th double-double of
the season by scoring 11 points and grabbing 11
rebounds. Jenkins also blocked three shots and had
a steal for No. 9-ranked Tarleton.
Latrell Spivey, Western New Mexico, continued
his strong rebounding going for 22 this past week
with a high of 14 coming against Midwestern State.
He nearly had a double-double in that game with six
points, while adding two blocks and a steal. He made
three field goals and added three assists in averaging
29 minutes on the floor.
Chris Lewis, Eastern New Mexico University, was
a force to be reckoned with for the Greyhounds
this past weekend, helping Eastern to a 2-0 record
with wins on the road over Midwestern State and
Cameron. The Philadelphia, Pa., native scored 23 in
the win over MSU, his highest point output of the
season with eight rebounds to help secure the win.
Against the Aggies, the junior scored 10 points and
had a pair of crucial blocks in overtime, to help hold
Cameron to just 8.3 percent from the field in the
extra frame while pulling in six of his eight rebounds
in the second half of the contest.

The Aggie men split their games last week, beating
Western New Mexico 86-66 and then falling in
overtime to Eastern New Mexico 81-73. Against the
Mustangs, CU shot over 47 percent from the field,
while holding WNMU to under 38 percent shooting.
Tyus Momoh led CU with 18 points, while three
others chipped in 14 or more. In the overtime loss
to ENMU, Cameron led for all but 10 minutes of the
game. After shooting over 48 percent in the first
half and 43 percent in the second, the Aggies made
just one of their 12 field goal attempts in overtime.
Delvonte Pierre had a career high 31 points, going
7-12 from the perimeter, but fouled out late in the
fourth quarter.

Eastern New Mexico
The Eastern New Mexico basketball team came
up with two road wins over Midwestern State
and Cameron this past weekend. The Greyhounds
improve to 12-14 overall and 6-10 in Lone Star
Conference action. More importantly, the Green and
Silver kept their postseason hopes alive. The four-
game conference winning streak by the Greyhounds
is the most since the 2003-04 campaign. Eastern
hosts Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville to close
out the regular season.
Midwestern State
Midwestern State snapped a six-game skid with
an 89-72 win over Western New Mexico Saturday
afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum... The Mustangs can
clinch a berth in the Lone Star Conference Postseason
Tournament with a win over Cameron Tuesday night
in Lawton... The Mustangs have held a lead in the
second half in 10 of their 12 losses this season and
were tied in the final three minutes of another...
Junior guard Brandon Neel is fifth in the LSC during
league play in scoring with 15.4 points per game...
Senior forward Igor Ibaka ranks second in the LSC
with 12 double-doubles this season and is averaging a
near double-double during LSC play with 13.9 points
and 9.9 rebounds per game... Ibaka posted back-to-
back double-doubles with 24 points and 10 rebounds
against Eastern New Mexico and 16 points and 13
rebounds versus Western New Mexico last week...
Senior guard Patrick Smith notched his first double-
double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists
against Western New Mexico...
Tarleton State
No. 9 Tarleton fell on the road to Texas A&M-
Commerce, 83-82. Tarleton is now 22-4 overall and
in first place at 13-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
The Texans will travel to UT-Permian Basin on
Thursday with a chance to win the program’s fifth LSC
championship.
Texas A&M-Commerce
The Lions knocked off No. 9 and conference leading
Tarleton State 83-82 in a game that went down to
the wire on Thursday night. A&M-Commerce has a
record of 18-7 and sits in third place in the LSC with
a 10-6 conference record. The Lions continue to lead
the conference in turnover margin and in steals per
game. They finish off the regular season with road
games against West Texas A&M and UT Permian
Basin.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
1-1 last week.
UT Permian Basin
UT Permian Basin picked up a pair of road wins
this past week, defeating Angelo State 93-90 and
knocking off Texas A&M - Kingsville in triple overtime
87-81. James McPherson led the Falcons in scoring on
the week, averaging 25 points per game while hitting
13 3-pointers in the pair of wins. The Falcons have
an exciting close to the season, hosting conference-
leader Tarleton State and third place Texas A&M -
Commerce at home.
West Texas A&M
The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M finished off
their final road trip of the regular season this past
weekend as they fell at Texas A&M-Kingsville on
Thursday night followed by a Saturday win over
Angelo State to move to 22-7 overall with a 10-6
mark in LSC standings. The Buffs return to the First
United Bank Center this weekend as they conclude
the regular season starting on Thursday night against
Texas A&M-Commerce with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. in
Canyon followed by a Senior Day matchup with the
No. 9 Texans of Tarleton State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
in an LSC showdown to be broadcast on the American
Sports Network.
Western New Mexico
The Mustangs played a pair of strong first halves
against both Cameron and Midwestern State. WNMU
shot nearly 40 percent from the floor for the week
and connected on 21 three-pointers. Outside of
strong performances by Willie McCray and Latrell
Spivey, Jordan Enriquez added 30 points. McCray led
the team in scoring and assists against Cameron and
Midwestern State. McCray tallied 32 points, with a
high of 19 against Midwestern State. He dished out
a high in assists with six versus Cameron. He shot
well from the field making 11-25 and also added two
rebounds and three steals in averaging 32.5 minutes
per game. Spivey continued his strong rebounding
going for 22 this past week with a high of 14 coming
against Midwestern State. He nearly had a double-
double in that game with six points, while adding
two blocks and a steal. He made three field goals and
