Level Design Workflow
Idea
My idea of my 2D side scrolling game is a space theme where you are in outer space going through
the different levels and fighting off the different enemies in a retro theme. I have chosen to call it
‘save the galaxy’ my reasoning for this is my aim is to defeat different aliens with missiles and canons
to earn as many points as possible. I want my game to appeal to a target audience of ages between
5-18 years of age. I want it to be creative and enjoyable having to dodge the enemy whilst having to
fight them of your own spaceship. I want two main enemies which are aliens and then a UFO
battleship on the final mission. I will have a range of weapons such as missiles and canons which will
be used to kill the enemy. In the first level I want the alien bugs lock on to the spaceship and it’s your
job to shoot them before they kill you. I want a level where the alien battleship and we shoot at each
other and I have to dodge the bullets and kill the alien battleship at the same time.
Visualisation / Idea
I have similar ideas to the know game Galaga these are some images of what my spaceship and
enemies will look like in the game, I chose this design because I wanted my spaceship to have side
turrets so it looked like it was shooting out of something rather than out of know ware the colours
resembled red verses blue two normal rebellious colours .You can see that my spaceship looks
similar to the one out of Galaga that is where I got my idea from but I tweaked it a bit. Also the
enemy space ship bug looks similar to the enemy also in Galaga using Galaga my game has grown
with help of imagery and sprite designs.
Planning and Execution
2. Kieran Owens
This is the background I created the theme I used was outer space where there is no planets
just a couple of moons and some very far away stars. This is a simple background and easily
made but I think this is an appropriate background for the game. A more simple background
allows you to build up the game and make sure its not too overloaded as a person would be
overwhelmed and wouldn’t be able to concentrate on what they was doing as there would
be constant distractions. The player will start on the left and scroll to the right killing the
enemies getting points to achieve the highest score until your spaceship destroyed , then
you try and beat the high score .The level will look like the ship is travelling through space at
high speeds.
Blocking
As you can see there is a fault with the later object can protect his/her self by sitting just out
of the screen, to stop this from happening I will have to reduce the barrier of the player
sprite so it can not leave the screen. On the second picture there are too many enemies
spawned into the screen at one time there would be no chance of beating it, to resolve this I
will have to reduce the enemies spawn rate so you can complete the level .The level works
but I will have to solve these problems to stop the enemies from spawning and the barrier
problem. There are no other problems with the level.
Detail
The are some sprite images I have created to add extra content to my 2D level the first on is
an extra missile for the spaceship so they would have more chance of a better score and it
fitted in to my spaceship design .The second item i added is a second enemy so the level

would fill out more but this enemy does not lock onto the space ship it fires the laser sprite
in the third picture also this enemy changes colours during the level.
Final Testing
In the final testing when I had to test the level out I was very happy with what I have created
I felt that I have stayed with the first design well .I feel that have created an enjoyable game
what would keep the player entertained, I mostly used the colours from the idea’s picture
found because the colours where a good base for my game and I grew to like them, they
resembled two teams (red vs blue).Going through the process of making this 2D level was
enjoyable to do. I enjoyed making an idea and doing research to get different ideas for my
game. One thing I didn’t like as much was making the game itself as it was complicated and
my game deleted itself so I had to start over again. This wasted a lot of time that I could
have been using the make the game better. If I was to do this again I would improve it by
doing a better design and adding more extras so I had more in my game. This would make
the game more interesting and fun and more people would want to play it. I would also
have made sure my game was saved properly so I didn’t have to redo it last minute.
