RESEARCH
I started by researching 3 existing games similar to the type of game I want to create, I
found out about: game developers, the deign, the features, how you play and how popular
the games are. My research originally was very detailed and precise on puzzle games, I
managed the time perfectly and had everything laid out clearly. But then I changed my
game idea and had to re-do some main part of my research and add some information on
side-scrolling games. I decided to make this switch as I felt I could do more illustration wise
with a side-scrolling game rather than a puzzle game. I created a questionnaire for two
participant, I asked questions based on colour and design and also on audio. My two
participants where Emma and Leon, and their information did help me with the audio
especially, as I only made theme music rather that using sound effects, I found this
information out once I'd observed both interviews and had written up in detail about them
both and how I respond to their answers. I kept myself in good time management
throughout the first research week, but had to spend time at the end of the project to go
back and edit some side-scrolling information. I felt my research offered an insight into
games from the perspective of attractiveness and how small details add so much to a very
simple game.
Planning
For my planning I wanted to experiment both with puzzle
games and side-scrolling games, as I'd be indecisive on which
to choose. I made two experiments (still images of a game in
gameplay), one was a match 3 puzzle game, you match three
shapes together until you fill you bar up and level up. My
second experiment was a boy who was late to glass and had to
get their before he gets caught and sent to detention, it’s a
side scrolling game and players must dodge objects in the
hallway and get to the class before time runs out. I did spend
too long on my second experiment as I got carried away with it
being perfect but I did by the end of completing both know for
sure id make a side scrolling game as I came out looking much
better and more detailed. When using photoshop abode for
creating illustrations is where I feel I do good detailed work
therefore I felt I should use that skill for my actual game.
Planning, even though took longer than should, it was detailed
and I felt I had a solid platform to start production of my
game.
Time management
Time management is something I've struggled with in the past and
again with this project I focused on the minute details too much rather
than completion on time. I hope to have a solid idea from the start for
my FMP and stick to my original idea and not give myself too much to
do. I gave myself I weekly planner and stuck to the rotation just needed
an extra week to go back and finish certain points. Time management is
something I really want to work on and I'll do this by again making a
planner but sticking to the plan and not adding things till my first
original plan in completed.
Technical Qualities
I used photoshop timeline to create an snip it of what would my game be like
in gameplay. I had the main character start by running through the castle and
pointing down him gun to shoot, I added 3 red bullets, for effect, to be
released from the gun and hit each enemy. The enemy then started to flash 4
times before disappearing completely. When the squad member approaches
the ninja, I had the ninja run a few steps before he was then shot and
disappeared. With the mummy I wanted more movement as it’s the last
enemy of the level. Therefore I had the squad member stop and stand still as
the mummy came out of the case (which the lid moves to the side) and the
mummy opens its eyes, which are red, and move its arms out in front of it
and turn and start walking towards the squad member. The squad member
then points the gun and shoots and the mummy after the bullets hit flashes
and disappears. I believe the animation worked well and I was able to show
off all the work I put into each and individual character. Next time I'd space
out each animation before creating it.
Authentic Qualities
I believe my game visually looked
professional and like running live game. I
spend time to add details such as chandelier,
trees, statues and hieroglyphics to add to
the professional, authentic feel and to add
an attractiveness that will want to player to
want to keep playing to see what's coming
next. I think the game could be developed to
be played on many devices such as PC,
PlayStation etc as its an easy playing game
with lots going on visually. It also based on
travelling the world as a squad so therefore
multiple could easily be developed into the
game and the game is globally attractive due
to the traveling aspect.
Audience Appeal
My game is attractive through the visual aspects and how its
unexpected. The player is enticed through different places throughout
the world in different times and defeating enemies that fit each world,
the players has no indications of what's coming so the unexpected
keeps the players playing because they want to know what's next. I've
made my colour scheme bright and made sure certain, fun details are
seen (e.g. hieroglyphics, trees, castle details). My game will be aimed
towards children as children have more sense of adventure than adults
and are more unlikely to have to any places related to them in the
game therefore they can make the locations what ever they want and
get more excited about the new locations their unlocking.

  • 2. My research originally was very detailed and precise on puzzle games, I managed the time perfectly and had everything laid out clearly. But then I changed my game idea and had to re-do some main part of my research and add some information on side-scrolling games. I decided to make this switch as I felt I could do more illustration wise with a side-scrolling game rather than a puzzle game. I created a questionnaire for two participant, I asked questions based on colour and design and also on audio. My two participants where Emma and Leon, and their information did help me with the audio especially, as I only made theme music rather that using sound effects, I found this information out once I'd observed both interviews and had written up in detail about them both and how I respond to their answers. I kept myself in good time management throughout the first research week, but had to spend time at the end of the project to go back and edit some side-scrolling information. I felt my research offered an insight into games from the perspective of attractiveness and how small details add so much to a very simple game.

I did spend too long on my second experiment as I got carried away with it being perfect but I did by the end of completing both know for sure id make a side scrolling game as I came out looking much better and more detailed. When using photoshop abode for creating illustrations is where I feel I do good detailed work therefore I felt I should use that skill for my actual game. Planning, even though took longer than should, it was detailed and I felt I had a solid platform to start production of my game.
  • 4. Time management Time management is something I've struggled with in the past and again with this project I focused on the minute details too much rather than completion on time. I hope to have a solid idea from the start for my FMP and stick to my original idea and not give myself too much to do. I gave myself I weekly planner and stuck to the rotation just needed an extra week to go back and finish certain points. Time management is something I really want to work on and I'll do this by again making a planner but sticking to the plan and not adding things till my first original plan in completed.
  • 5. Technical Qualities I used photoshop timeline to create an snip it of what would my game be like in gameplay. I had the main character start by running through the castle and pointing down him gun to shoot, I added 3 red bullets, for effect, to be released from the gun and hit each enemy. The enemy then started to flash 4 times before disappearing completely. When the squad member approaches the ninja, I had the ninja run a few steps before he was then shot and disappeared. With the mummy I wanted more movement as it’s the last enemy of the level. Therefore I had the squad member stop and stand still as the mummy came out of the case (which the lid moves to the side) and the mummy opens its eyes, which are red, and move its arms out in front of it and turn and start walking towards the squad member. The squad member then points the gun and shoots and the mummy after the bullets hit flashes and disappears. I believe the animation worked well and I was able to show off all the work I put into each and individual character. Next time I'd space out each animation before creating it.
  • 6. Authentic Qualities I believe my game visually looked professional and like running live game. I spend time to add details such as chandelier, trees, statues and hieroglyphics to add to the professional, authentic feel and to add an attractiveness that will want to player to want to keep playing to see what's coming next. I think the game could be developed to be played on many devices such as PC, PlayStation etc as its an easy playing game with lots going on visually. It also based on travelling the world as a squad so therefore multiple could easily be developed into the game and the game is globally attractive due to the traveling aspect.
  • 7. Audience Appeal My game is attractive through the visual aspects and how its unexpected. The player is enticed through different places throughout the world in different times and defeating enemies that fit each world, the players has no indications of what's coming so the unexpected keeps the players playing because they want to know what's next. I've made my colour scheme bright and made sure certain, fun details are seen (e.g. hieroglyphics, trees, castle details). My game will be aimed towards children as children have more sense of adventure than adults and are more unlikely to have to any places related to them in the game therefore they can make the locations what ever they want and get more excited about the new locations their unlocking.
