Kieran Owens created a first-person 3D environment in Unity set in an Amazonian jungle biome. The player explores the jungle landscape, encountering animals and construction workers while searching for an enchanted tree that holds the cure for immortality. Owens built the terrain with a river valley surrounded by mountains, and populated it with trees, villages, vehicles, and other scenery using Unity assets. He added gameplay elements like transport vehicles and a campsite to link the environment to the narrative of searching for the magical tree.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

3D level workflow
This task we have been asked to create a first person 3D environment using Unity. In this
environment I would like to make a Jungle, Amazonian biome with rivers and large trees and villages
in the rainforest and animals moving around. These are some images of which I used to create my
3D Level in Unity. I created the idea of a storyline behind the game. In this game the first person
player which is you are trying to find a specific enchanted tree which is buried under ground to find
the cure for immortality. Through his journey he will encounter deadly animals that are searching for
prey. Dangerous terrain which means the ground where the player must travel across is very
dangerous and bumpy roads. The construction workers are there to help him destroy the rainforest
to find the enchanted tree for a small percentage of the profit. They will move across the landscape
as the first person player (you) moves across the map searching for clues that will lead to the tree.
When told they will begin their journey on embarking the nature and travelling night and day.
Having a storyline makes it more realistic and gives the 3D level a nice touch and meaning.
I began to create a base image to begin with on Unity. Firstly I had to raise the surface by 5 metres
so I could input a riverbed. I made a flat terrain and shaped the layout that came to mind copying
the curves in the river and laying out the land and water bed from the images of the Amazonian
river. I create a mountain template surrounding the river which is the boarder so the player would
not fall off the map. I needed to place a directional light so I could see the terrain more clearly. I
could chose from which direction I wanted the light source to come from therefore creating
shadows and more realistic scenery.
2. Kieran Owens
Secondly, I used a water asset to create my river which is 5 meter deep under water. I used 4/5
water assets as I had to level it out with the ground using the movement tools and size tools.
After this I styled the terrain around the water to make it more visually attractive. Creating
mountains to show that the river is like in a valley surrounded by mountains. I used terrain script to
3. Kieran Owens
raise and sharpen the mountain tops and put different textures in the ground to raise different pats
and make the image come to life.
After I added the mountains I applied the texture to the surfaces and the ground. I painted the
mountain using a rock texture from the terrain script paint texture. I selected parts of the surfaced
and covered them in a grass type texture to make it look more realistic. I had to be very precise on
where I painted certain places so it fitted into my environment. I had to be careful around the edges
of the mountains and in-between the surface when applying the colour so it didn’t overlaps.
4. Kieran Owens
Next, I applied a textured sky box to give the visual affect of the morning sky with clouds and
sunlight. To do this I picked the sky asset which already had the different clouds and sunlight
attached and this was placed behind the terrain.
5. Kieran Owens
With the textures added I started to add some scenery like trees to fill out the map. I selected the
tree placement tool and selected the area in which I wanted to place them and then I selected the
type of tree I wanted to use which was Scott’s pine which I downloaded from the assets store. I then
had to paint this across the surface making sure I didn’t place them on inappropriate places like half
way up the mountain or in the river. I downloaded a tree pack on the asset store which had various
different types of trees and buses which I played around with until I found one which was more
suitable for my landscape. I would also like to create a small village and camp in order to make the
3D image look alive, by giving it a more purpose. I would do this by going on the assets store and
selecting different 3D model village assets and placing them on the surface. I also was to create rock
pools lava pools and more. This would give it a more practical viewing and make the image feel more
natural look to the 3D image.
Originally the trees were hollow and therefore the player was able to pass through them easily
which was unrealistic and provided many problems for the map. Therefore i had to go back and
make the trees collide the player.
6. Kieran Owens
In this image I added a boat from the assets store to plant some scenery in the water and make it
more practice and gave it a friendly feeling with different scenery to bring it alive. I downloaded the
boat for free from the Unity assets store.
In this image I wanted to make a construction camp as I had an idea of a demolition team that
wanted to tear down the rainforest to create a new city and in this image it would show where they
started to construct by having machinery and tents where the workers were staying. I started of by
putting two fort lifts trucks from the Unity asset store and to show the start of a construction site to
reconstruct the forest.
7. Kieran Owens
I got a helicopter asset and placed this within the rainforest which was there for any emergency
which was to commence in the jungle. This originally in my design would circle the forest ensuring
no human or animal was in danger and that the forest was being kept safe and clean. This would
mean all demolition activities would be watched carefully so no animal habitats or wide life came
into danger.
I decided to apply a camp set two tents and a little fire which gives of its own light. For the play to
set up camp and live whilst construction is taking place all of the setting links up to the back story on
the level. I went into the assets store and downloaded a campsite asset. I picket to tents and a lit fire
and placed them in the map in a open space where the construction is going to take place.
8. Kieran Owens
This is an image I created on my map off rock pools which I textured myself using the rock texture. I
shaped the landscape to have jagged edges to give it a more visual effect. I placed them by the side
of the river on the other side of the map as I thought it would be good for the scenery.
This is a bridge/ pier that I downloaded from the assets store. It’s placed near the campsite. I had to
place several bridges so the player could cross them. I used around 5 bridge assets to make it more
visual and effective.
9. Kieran Owens
In this image there is SUV trucks from my army utility pack that I downloaded from the unity asset
store. Placing these symbolises that the player could use these as transport to make his way around
the map. I placed these near the campsite where the construction workers and other characters are
so the player can access these faster and transport other characters around the map. I picked three
USV’s as in my idea not more than three people can live in the tents and I have two tents. So I based
the amount which was necessary.
I placed a water tower which I also downloaded from the assets store to symbolise water
consumption in the map. The water tower cleans the river water so it’s able to be consumed by the
player. The water tower can also clean and drain the river so wildlife have a drinking area without
killing the wildlife with waste materials.
10. Kieran Owens
This is a picture of barrels which I have placed to symbolise fuel. They did not have a mesh collider
for them so I had to create a box collider around them. I created the box collider with the box
collider component shaping it around the barrels. All of my physical assets have colliders on. Some
have there own collider net and some i have to create using the box collider component.
This is the final design for my map. I have taken a screenshot to show what it looks like from two
different views. The first picture is a heads on view and the second is birds eye view of my 3D unity
level.
11. Kieran Owens
I think I have created an enjoyable realistic level using Unity. I think I have met my standards for a
map creation and I feel that people will enjoy my level and will be intrigued by the story line and be
able to connect with game and enjoy embarking on a new mission across the landscape of my
rainforest.
