Audience Research Analysis
For my audience researchIsent out a surveyto several people, thissurveycoveredtopicsspecificto
my musicvideoconcept. The firstquestionIaskedwasasimple one anditwas askingtheirgenderas
it isvery importantto see whichtargetaudience youare tryingto appeal to.As you can see fromthe
chart above, more females answered my survey than males did.
Whenitcame to the artiststhatwhere the mostpopularmore of the audience choose One Direction,
some of the reasonsbehindthiswasthe fact thattheyhave a biggerfanbase than any of the others.
Since more girls answered this survey, their comments where things such as One Direction have a
certain sex appeal which applies to teenage girls.I included Jessie J withinmy survey on purpose to
see what people thought made her popular or how popular theywould rank her. The questionnaire
showedthat people knew Jessie Jisnot the well-knownartistslike otherpeople butshe isknownto

times they where chosen.
The questionIgave the audience toanswerwas ‘In your opinionwhatmakesthese artistspopular?’
Theyall came upwithvalidanswersthatmakesthe artistpopular.Several people commentedonthe
fact that the artistshave catchysongs, thisisa vital part.Knowingthiswillworkinmyfavourbecause
I know I have pickeda catchy song and it will stickinpeople’sminds.Whenlookingat the responses
one stood out and this one was “Their looks and marketisation also the genre of songs they sing”.

Having this comment means that if all the advertising links in with each other and shows the genre
they are then it will appeal more to the target audience.
The artists look is important because it shows their personality and the audience like to see the
persona, so that they can figure out whether they like the artist and their type of music. Sometimes
the artistisjustknownfortheirsongs,asthe audience have mentionedintheircomments.Thiscould
be because theydo not have a big star personthat ispushedinto the mediaconstantly, maybe they
link the audience to admire their work rather than personality. Public appearances was also
mentionedwithinthe commentsforthisquestion.Thismeansthattheythinkthe artists are popular
because they are advertised so much on things such as TV, Radio etc. This could help me when
advertising my music video because the more I advertise and push the video out there the more
popular it will become.
As I am doinga POPgenre videoI neededtoknow whatthe audience thoughtwasthe most popular
element about POP. This allowed me to be able to see which element I can include more frequently
intothe video.Fromthese results Ican inferthatthe audience likestosee ahappyand upbeatmusic
video. This I cannot use in my video for the full thing as I have chosen to show a sad story that
increasinglygetsbetterovertime.SoI will use the audience preference butI am going to push their
boundariesandmake themsee thatthe videocanbe differentandtheycanstill enjoyit.Buttomake
sure I don’t overloadthe audience new experience Iwill keepthe otherthingstheyvotedtobe must
popular.Thiswouldbe thingssuchas, performance andnarrative based,close-upsof the artists,and
maybe bright coloured clothes.

This question above was a very important question for my research, because I am going to include
two main characters. And by the result of my questionnaire, I can see that the audience completely
back up my idea and would be happy to see it done. Which means I need to make having two
characters interesting.
The majority of the audience doing my survey have chosen that they would like to see one male
character and one female.Thiswouldnotworkformy musicvideo because itwouldmake itlooklike
the twocharacters hasa relationshipwhichisabusive,whichisnotwhatIamtryingto getacross.But
some of the audience have selectedbothfemale whichshowssome toback up the course I want to
take and this will enable me to show the storyline clearer by using the same gendered actors.

Whenthe resultscame backfromthisquestion, youcansee fromthe resultsabove that more people
supporthavingan upbeatsongwithasadstoryline.Thisfitsperfectlyintomyplanformysongbecause
it is quite upbeat, howeverIwouldlike to show thema sad and complicatedstoryline. Knowingthe
audience iswillingtosee asad storyline doesn’tallow me toknow whytheyagree tothis, sothe next
questionwasto justifytheirresponsetothisquestion.Whentalkingabouttheirreasoningsome said
thattheywouldbe willingtoseethisbecause“Itdefiespopgenreexpectationsandwouldbe aunique
approach to an upbeatsong”,“It's a good contrast and original”, “because itadds a twistand differs
from the usual music videos”. All the positive feedback from the people who agreed to this new
concept are people willing to see change. Being original for my video will make it special because
sometimesitisbetterto change the genre than letthe genre change you.My musicvideowill adda
twist and therefore satisfy some of the audience. Some who are opposed to this change mentioned
why they did not want this to happen some said “It's a happy song and a sad storyline will upset
audiences”, “hard to relate to a sad story whilst listening to upbeat music”, “It would kill the vibe,
ruining the atmosphere.” These are all valid points but I want to push the genres boundaries and
create a new product which will intrigue new people and older audience all at the same time.

The audience that have chosen the option ‘All lip syncing’ is quite unrealistic because they would
become bored with the music video if all they seem was someone singing, you need to have some
narrative in there where it shows people going about their business and not including the audience
personally, more like letting the audience watch their personal lives. Most lip syncing is available
requestbutagainthe narrative needsmore time onscreentobe able to geta clearpointacross. And
