3. Gathering audience research and utilising the
information gathered played a huge role in the
construction of our music video. It's had a key role in
informing us on how to ensure that our media products
are always tailoring to our different target audience's
needs. We received regular audience feedback
throughout the production process on all of our media
products.
4. The First form of audience research we decided to
do was a questionnaire that we done online , In
the form of survey monkey. As this platform put
the results in statistics to help us have better
understanding of the of the type of target
audience we were targeting to make a music video
that fitted there needs and appealed to them.
14. What we learnt:
This helped us identify our target audience, which were 15-20 year old females.
This we identified as our primary target audience. This audience we identified
would be, fashionable, experiencing first love, and have genuine love of the rhythm
and blues genre. Secondly, for our artist to be to be able to break into the mass
market we had to also identify a secondary target market which would be 15-21
year old boys. They would be attracted to female audience as most males around
this age group are interested in rap music as our research shows. Our tertiary target
audience are fans of similar and mixed genres such as hip hop as they share a
similar style of music to what Ariya makes. We also learnt that the audience didn’t
usually mind the lead singer, therefore our vision of having of having a female lead
singer wasn’t an issue. Furthermore we also learnt that audiences preffered fast
paced songs, which matched our original song. Also the type of music videos
audiences generally like are performance, followed in second place by narrative,
which caused us to have a mixture of the two have a music video that has a clear
narrative with elements of performance. Finally, our audience research revealed
that our audience generally really like the name we chose for our artist.
15. Our second type of secondary research for
audience feedback was a focus group in which we
played our song to some volunteers that fit our
target audience both primary and secondary. And
aske them a series of questions
16. The question
1. After listening to the song what genre do you
think it is?
2. What do you think the target audience would be
in terms of age?
3. Who do you think the target audience is in terms
of gender?
4. What do you think the music video would look
like?
5. Do you like the song
17. What we learnt:
After playing our music video for an audience for the first time in our
focus group we learnt that the general consensus was that this was a in
the R&B genre, due to this being an original song this was vital, as
planning went to making this music video for it to be an R&B music
video. The focus group was able to exactly identify the age group that
would be target as our target audience, they were much more generic
answering things like ‘teens experiencing love for first time’ which was
who we were targeting, therefore proving to be effective. The group
also identified the gender we would be targeted, that were girls.
Furthermore, the ideas they gave us for the music video, was using
performance, while others said the lyrics would be perfect for narrative
to tell a story on love and first love.
18. We also decided to to further investigate the target
audience by interviewing a individual that fitted into
our target audience, of a female aged 15-21 and
asked her a series of questions on the digipak and
poster.
19. What we learnt:
We learnt that the interviewee liked the colors used and believed that
it was suited to target females, as the colours used are very feminine
and is synchronised with the feminine image of the artist in high heels,
and congratulated the celebration of feminine traits which have been
lost in a male run industry. The interviewee was able to to understand
that she fitted into the the target market, which was effective as this
was our aim. She also had the idea that this music video would be a
narrative, due to the emotion behind the lyrics. This was very helpful as
this gave us the feedback we had hoped to receive as the ancillary text
was suited to the target audience.
20. Our rough cut
We presented our rough cut to members of the class. Through this we
got some helpful feedback to further improve our work, the main issue
was that our lack of lighting, not giving the artist the star image she
needs to appeal to a mass market. We rectified this by reevaluating our
location, and increasing our use of lighting buy purchasing a lighting kit
to enable our music video to look to the best it can be. Furthermore,
other issues were that the there wasn’t enough performance for a song
of such fast tempo, we improved this by adding a scene of performance
but splitting throughout the video for professionalism and keeping
audience engaged. Finally we were also pointed out on the fact that
some of our shots were shakey, we fixed this by re-filming the shots on
a tripod, as to the hand used before hand.
