The document provides details for a music video concept to accompany Twenty One Pilots' song "Goner". The concept involves two friends living across from each other who are growing isolated due to one friend's "inner demons". The friend is scared of what they are becoming, while the other tries to help. Their rooms will show their personalities. The video will show their failed attempts to communicate and the confrontation when the alter ego physically appears, leading to a fight scene. The message is about having friends to help overcome life's challenges.

2. CONCEPT
The concept for my video is essentially one friend (Person A) withdrawing from their
surroundings thanks to their ‘inner demons’ and the other friend (Person B) fights the
inner demon to get their friend back.
The two friends will be living together in rooms directly across from each other, they are so
close that if you would open one door outwards it would almost hit the other door, yet even
though they are so close they are both still isolated thanks to fear and frustration on each
end, friend A is scared of what they are turning into, scared that their thoughts are winning
so they isolate themselves as to not hurt their best friend; and person B is scared they are
losing their best friend but also don’t want to scare them or see them in a bad state or see
who they are becoming.
The pair will repeatedly try and communicate to each other, from talking to a mirror that
backs onto the wall or just into their blank space they will also go as far as walking to the
other bedroom door but never actually succeeding to knock or open the door, the fear of the
unknown constantly pulling the pair back from reconciling. I don’t plan to straight up
show that person A has an alter ego, I want to place subtle hints in the way they hold
themselves, their actions and how they live so the audience can start to develop their own
opinions, there will be a slow character development up until the breakdown where the
alter ego/inner demons will be physically shown by a costume change and face paint. After
the ‘alter ego’ finally presents themself in a physical manner they go to person B’s room
and confront them which leads into a fight, during which their will be a lot of quick cuts to
dangerous items/situations to show the extremity of the situation and so that you can’t
completely see what’s going on/what is being said, it’s for the audience to put their own
twist using Barthes’ Semantic Code theory.
The video will start off with obvious themes of isolation, fear, trauma, frustration and
mystery but will slowly develop into anger, causing a conflict that results in a more serene
theme of relief and mutual love once the alter ego is defeated before quickly flicking back to
dread at it reveals person B took on person A’s alter ego to set their friend free.
The video will be quite frantic and disjointed to give an unnerving feel, then once the alter
ego is defeated I want the pair to hug and end on a zoom in on the now ‘normal’ friends’
arms to show that person B has black on his wrist and for the unnerving and mysterious
feel returns as the screen fades to black.
The message being portrayed through the video is that if you have the right friends you will
get through anything that life throws at you, even if they have to hurt themselves to help
you succeed.
3. NARRATIVE AND PERFORMANCE
The narrative in this video will heavily outweigh the performance aspect with the only
performance based part of the video being the lip synching that comes across as more of a
conversation than people performing a song as they will be facing each other or facing a mirror.
Throughout the video there won’t be the stereotypical voyeurism or performance shots because
I feel that those would take away from the videos narrative. Both characters will lip sync chosen
lines when appropriate but not all the way through the video.
One of the theories that links to the Narrative that will be portrayed in the video is Levi Strauss’
theory of binary oppositions as my there will be one extremely untidy room and one extremely
tidy room along with light clothing vs dark clothing between the two characters in my video to
portray the characters’ personalities and for character development to help unveil the alter-ego
side of the narrative. The video will utilise the effect of fragmented and/or non-linear narrative
so the audience has to put their own pieces of the story together and decipher what exactly is
going on which will lead to them being more invested in the single and re-watching the video
till they make sense of it, this narrative can also help display how person A is feeling with the
burden of an alter ego, they don’t always have the same memories/point of view for the whole
situation which would result in things not quite piecing together.
The realist narrative paired with a divergent narrative will show that even though the video may
have an unexpected turn or ending in it, it’s something that could possibly happen and by
having a realistic narrative the audience may empathise with the characters, which always leads
to a better reception and better sales than a generic textbook video.
The music used for the video will also be a large part of the Narrative as for each of the build ups
of the song there will be a tense action e.g for the first build up person A goes to person B’s door
but as the music relaxes again they retreat back to their room; the most poignant of those being
that the climax of the song connects directly to the timing of the breakdown in the video.
4. LOCATION, COSTUME, PROPS
Location:
Most of the music video will be filmed within two bedrooms opposite each other that
happen to be at my grandparents’ house, I chose it to be there because the fact the doors
are directly opposite each other fits in very well with the concept I want to have
throughout my video. The bedrooms also have a double wardrobe that have mirror-doors
and are in the exact same place in both rooms which will help for editing it as if they are
sat talking to each other through the mirror along with them making more effective
mirror shots of the room since they are so large.
There will also be a small section of the video filmed in the lounge downstairs where one
of the characters will be watching home videos of the pair having fun when the other
bangs on the window pleading for help. This location is ideal for that shot as they have
french glass doors that will show the full body of the other person and also leave nowhere
to hide for the people on the inside of the room. The fact the windows are so large leaves
opportunities to alter the dress code of the person outside and widens the possibility of
portraying specific messages through specific items or styles of clothing.
For the shots including fire, water, sparklers etc. they will all either be in the back garden
or in the field beside the location as they can’t be outside for health and safety purposes
but by filming those shots in a large open space it furthers the connotations of isolation
and that they only have each other.
SetUp Of The Rooms:
For the most part of the video the pair will be in their rooms so the way they are set out is
a pivotal part of the video. The fact that one has an alter ego and one is classed as more
‘normal’ it makes sense for one to have a messy room and one to have a pristine room;
the ‘colour scheme’ of light for the ‘normal’ friend and dark for the friend with the alter
ego is also carried into the setup of the rooms that they are in.
For the small portion of the video that is in the lounge area there will also be a lot of happy
photographs and tokens of friendship around the room to signify that things haven’t
always been so dark or complicated, they were once happy and carefree.
Props:
Person A’s Bedroom - Lots of paper around the room torn and scrunched up along with
drawings and scribbled writing all over the walls(on tracing paper that’s stuck to the
walls, not actually going to paint all over). The room needs to embody the thoughts and
feelings of someone who is scared and struggling to control negative thoughts. There will
also be clothes strewn all over the room along with notebooks and stationary thrown all
over the room. (MAYBE- Have the room half tidy half messy split down the middle to
literally embody ‘alter ego’). Wipes are a prop that may or may not be used, we are
planning for person A to wipe away foundation and reveal the alter ego but we also have a
few other ideas for ‘the reveal’ of the alter ego.
5. Person B’s Bedroom - Still a lot of paper except all neat in piles with much neater writing
on them and and stationary neatly lined up on the furniture. Book full of ways to help
their friend, also a scrapbook of the two enjoying themselves to show the ‘normal’ person
is consumed in trying to help their friend but still remain their own person. More fancy
and pristine items in person B’s room to insinuate they have an income and are more put
together.
Either room: Red beanies and caps used to connote danger but also throw in frustration
and/or wear them to hide their face throughout the shots. Also a phone/mp3 player and
earphones are a must. They will be used during the ‘slip away into the sound section’ and
can also be displayed with both people listening to the same song, they’re still connected
through music and both find comfort in it.
Costumes And Makeup:
Person A: Black/Dark coloured clothing will be worn as they are the ‘darker’ and more
troubled character and the darker colours will help with that portrayal. To link to another
song by Twenty One Pilots, they will also wear bigger and bulkier boots than person B in
an attempt to keep grounded.
Alter Ego: Red clothing to connote danger and maybe even spilt blood, the clothing may
be more rugged or torn to give the more dishevelled look that will help build the character
and show they’re not a good ‘person’. They will also have skeleton face-paint on their
face and/or black face-paint on the neck and hands as if the darkness is consuming them,
or alternatively, as if everything they touch get’s tainted since the hands are black and can
transfer the paint to others.
Person B: Binary opposites to person A, they will be in light coloured clothing to make it
seem like they are more positive and almost ‘pure’ compared to person A. It can also
connote that they could be person B’s guardian angel, they are going to save and look after
their friend. They will also wear more lightweight and loose shoes to show they are more
free-living and don’t have as many troubles as person A.
6. LIGHTING AND COLOUR
The video will have a lot of different types of lighting according to what is going on in that
particular shot, for example during the ‘fight’ section of the video there will be more dark
lighting overall with either low-lit sections meaning that you only see the shadows/or
outline, or there may be fright flashes of lights so you only see bits and pieces of what is
going on, almost as if to create the effect of strobe lighting.
Again going with the light/dark theme (almost like ying/yang) person A’s room will be
more dull and dim with a lot less lighting than person B’s room which will be much
lighter and brighter in comparison. Shots with the ‘alter ego’ in will also either have a red
tinge to them or a red bulb used in them to show the danger and anger surrounding that
character.
As they defeat the alter ego there will also be a bright almost blinding light, maybe even
overlay a clip of a sparkler to show the power and emotion within that scene, however the
lighting will slowly fade back down to an eerie dimly lit frame as the shot zooms in on the
hand to show that the fight is nowhere near over.
The colour scheme of black white and red is also a nodd towards the band themselves at
their colour scheme is also quite often black and red so I wanted to continue their house
style into my own work but replace their blue with white to put my own twist to it.
7. CAMERA AND EDITING TECHNIQUES
The majority of cuts will be plain simple cuts as to not distract from the concept but there
will also be attempts at TV fuzz/loading/glitching effects atop of clips or to help transition
between two of them, perhaps zooming in on the TV as person B is watching clips of the
pair of them. There will also be use of a Twenty One Pilots flag and using shots of the
different pieces of the flag to experiment with for transitions and see if any of those will
work, they also may be used to overlay as the flag is only semi-opaque.
There will also be experimentation with different overlays of multiple clips or of a light
burn over specific parts to either draw attention to what is in that frame or even to mask
exactly what it’s going on depending on how severe the light burn is and the outcome that
I’m looking for.
Another edit that is planned to be in the video is a split screen as they were trying to
communicate to each other from either side of the wall/wardrobe either that or to pan/use
invisible editing to create that same effect of them sat in the same position in the same
place of each room.
During the ‘breakdown’ of the track there will be a lot of quick successive cuts to
emphasise the drama that is going on but to also create an almost strobing effect as
actually using a strobe light may be too much for the camera and too full on of an effect
that I want to achieve.
Some shots of person A will also be sped up to highlight the frantic/scared actions the
character is carrying out and will make it a little more obvious that something is very
wrong with them and that they’re isolated and scared and they need their best friend to
help them through this time.
As for shots there will be some tracking and point of view shots to show exactly what the
people are doing, how they move, but also how they see their surroundings which may
make them empathise with the character and try to understand what is going on more, to
invest themselves into the video.
Lots of high and low angles will also help show the extremity of the situation, it’s not just
someone stressed over work or a piece of homework there is something very wrong,
almost supernatural going on, and that will also be portrayed by may closeups on hands,
faces and specific of items of interest e.g a notebook with unnerving things wrote in it.
The closeups on the hands may show fidgeting and picking at nails, blood on them, black
paint on them, they can show many different aspects of the struggle of having an ‘alter
ego’/having a friend with one; the shots of the face can also show different facial
expressions like scared and frustrated but may also show injuries or irritation on the
features of the face that will help with the character development.
