part in this questionnaire were either 11-16 or 17-14. However,
no people between the age of 25 and 35 completed this survey
or anyone over 50 years old. This shows that my findings are
going to be based around youths.

This chart shows me that the majority of people who
took part in my questionnaire like rock music, which is
convenient as this is the type of genre I would like to use
for my music video is punk rock which is a subgenre of
rock.
What do you want to see in music videos?
Awareness videos / serious
Focus on the band off stage
Comical / Not serious
Live performance
Storytelling

The majority of people who took part in the questionnaire want to see a not serious
type of video with not particular plot or meaning. However, Storytelling and
awareness videos both got two votes, which shows my participants have mixed
ideas on what they would like to see in a music video which means I’m safe to
choose out of any of the three what to make my video as the majority of the votes
went to them.
Do you think music videos are vital in order for a singers/bands
success? If yes, explain why.
Yes
No
Yes, as music
videos give us
insights to the
band and what
they are like.
It helps to
visualise the
song how the
band interprets
it.
Yes as it further
develops the artists
style.
Lets you
discover more
about the
band, how
they perform
etc.
It helps to
promote
themselves as
their song can be
on MTV with a
music video.
The majority of participants stated that
they do think music videos are vital for a
singers/bands success, as it gives you an
insight to what the artist you are
interested in are like.
Others said they think music videos are
important as it shows the artists style,
how they perform, and in what way they
use video to add substance to their song.
Another stated that music videos are
important, as without them the artist
wouldn’t be able to promote themselves
on TV channels that only show music
videos.
These mixed responses show me
different reasons to why music videos
hold an important role for the performers
success, and therefore further informs
me that its almost imperative to have
music videos within the media industry.
What do you think about music videos that follow clear
storylines that link to the lyrics?
They make the video
interesting
They are
unimaginative
I think storylines
help to explain
the lyrics better
They can become dull
as its been done many
times before
They can be emotive and
express the intention of
the piece
Here are some of the responses to
this question. Two of these
responses state that music videos
with a storyline become boring as
this has been done many times
before. However, majority of
people feel positively towards
storylines within videos as they can
help portray emotion that the lyrics
hold.
This shows me that people enjoy
watching a video if it has a story
involved, as it helps narrate the
lyrics to further your connection
with the song.
They are most interesting that just watching the singer perform
What is your view upon more controversial music
videos such as Lady Gaga, The Pretty Reckless etc
They make the music
industry interesting They stand out from
other artists
Many people find
controversial music
effective, as it makes the
video more memorable.
It shows the
artist being
unique Shows the creativity
of the performer
It depends in what they
artist attempts to be
controversial, if its for a
cause/ to prove something
then its effective
They are more to
make the band/artist
stand out than
actually be effective
This is important to note
for my music video in
making it differ from the
usual stereotypical punk
videos in order for it to
stand out.
It depends in what way they are being
controversial, Lady Gaga expresses it
through her art which I think is
effective in the acceptance of being
unique
What would you most like to see in a music video from
your favourite genre?
A creative video
that inspires me
artistically
Interesting
visuals
A video with
substance that
relates to the
poetic lyricism
that will
challenge or add
to my ideologies
The artist that’s singing
the song to be featured
Varied shots that
match the fast paced
notion of the music
A theme to
the video
Cuts between live
performance and a
narrative to keep the
video moving along
Interesting locations
This question allowed me
to adapt on my original
ideas of what I would like
to see in a music video.
The audiences response
to the video is the most
important as they are the
ones that viewing the
video.
Therefore it’s vital for me
to take in their views and
try to incorporate them
to my video to make it
more relatable for my
audience.
What would you consider the greatest music video of
all time, and why?
Thriller – Michael Jackson
Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody
Blink 182 – I Miss You
Aerosmith - Walk This Way
Iggy Azalea – Fancy
Happy – Pharrell
November Rain – Guns n Roses
Foo Fighters – Pretender
Green Day – Jesus of Suburbia
A large percentage of people said
that older artists such as Queen
and Guns n Roses have the best
music videos.
The older music videos are
generally considered the greatest
music videos, as any way of
performing a song then was new
to the audience, whereas now so
many creative ways of making a
music video have been done.
Therefore, I have to try to make
my video unique and something
that the audience hasn’t before
seen in order to make the video
be great and memorable.
Target Audience
• From this questionnaire I have found that my main target audience is females under the age of
25, which means the majority of them are youths.
• My target audience are younger in age, which is helpful as according to Washington Post,
“teenagers spend more than 7½ hours a day consuming media — watching TV, listening to
music, surfing the Web, social networking, and playing video games” this means that my
target audience is large in numbers.
• Due to the large amount of time teenagers spend online, it comes to no surprise that the
majority of the participants view music videos on YouTube. This is useful as my music video
will be uploaded into YouTube, meaning it will be able to be targeted at my audience.
• Research I found from my questionnaire supports my earlier realisation that teenagers consume
the most media as my survey presents that most people watch music videos on a daily basis.
• The most popular genre chosen by the participants is rock music, which is where my chosen
genre of punk originated from. For this reason my questionnaire is important as it shows the
views of people who will be interesting in my music video, so I will be taking into account
their comments upon what makes a successful video.
•
What to include
• Dyers Utopian Solution is a theory which informs me that many audience members listen to music for an
escape to another, better world.
• This explains why most people want to see a comical/not serious music video, as it allows them to have
escapism in which they can be a passive audience enabling them to have a diversion from every day life.
• Therefore in my video I aim to create a world with effective visuals which will achieve my targets audiences
need for an alternative reality, and by doing so will appeal to their expectations of a punk music video.
• An example of a comical music video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ht5RZpzPqw&list=AL94UKMTqg-9BOQAspdAX07lUDWoik2Rbn
• I also found that my audience appreciates controversial artists such as Lady Gaga, and the band The Pretty
Reckless, along with other examples such as Rise Against and The Sex Pistols. These types of artists
usually include a deeper meaning within their music videos, such as the music video below by The
Pretty Reckless which enthuses audiences to be active by portraying feminist views and how women
are badly portrayed within media:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_A4G1jkw24&list=PLwJ0DGs2WfO2JknDsimiPh1v73gwBAW1G
Audience theory
• My main target is to produce a music video that will challenge
ideologies of the audience or portray a particular message.
• I will do this through using narrative to create scenes which will
act as a metaphor for a message which will consist of
eliminating the negatives and accentuating the positives.
• By creating a deeper meaning within my music video relates to
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as the highest point of the
pyramid is self-actualisation which consists of personal growth
which will hopefully be visible within my video.
• To get the audience acquainted with the performer, I will include
close-up shots of the artist, enabling a focus upon them in
order to sell them as an artist.
