1. 3. What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
2. To gain a understanding on how successful I was in producing my media texts, being;
my music video, digipak and magazine advert- I made a survey in order to gain
feedback on all of my work. I manipulated the audience by asking questions which
would aid me to know how successful my music video and ancillary products were
and this allowed me to know whether it was good promotional material.
In order to ensure that I gain results I created it online on a website called
SurveyMonkey.com and this was quick and easier than having to approach people
in person and trying to get them to first watch my music video and then view my
ancillary products, on the site I could embed my music video and tasks on there
therefore they werent having to go and find it themselves. When distributing my
survey, I chose online platforms like Twitter and Facebook as these are social
media sites that are widely populated. The survey was anonymous and this was
useful as the audience were not afraid of giving their honest opinions and to
ensure there were n biased data.
3. In order to ensure that I get people to complete my survey, I created a link which was the
following: “Can you please take a few minutes to answer my survey? Its for my A2
media coursework and is very important that I gain feedback. There is a hyperlink
when you click on the link below; it is blue and will direct you to a page with all three
of my media products and then you can proceed with the survey. Thank you.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/?sm=CnLO1E1qufadhNAG52T9oQ%3d%3d” and
this allowed me to gain feedback efficiently, when clicking on the link, they were
directed to a page which highlighted that they should click on the link to see my
music video and ancillary tasks:
Once they had clicked on the link, they were directed to a blog post with my various
productions: http://a2mediastudiessuraj.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/music-video_16.html
which then they could proceed with the survey.
5. Q1. How old are you?
I intentionally asked this question as it allowed me to know what the ages of the audience and the feedback
according to that, for example, as the majority of the people who took part in this survey were all sixteen and
above, it gives me an indication of my target audience’s opinion on my music video and allowing me to analyse
my results knowing that this is the opinion of my target audience and understand the appropriateness of the
music video for my target audience. With the knowledge of how old the person participating is, I will be able to
evaluate whether or not my project has been successful as if my target audience are not satisfied by what they
have seen then I have not done my target audience research effectively as I have not produced something
which they would like. All participant’s were within the age range in which I targeted as I initially said I wanted
to aim it towards people who are 16+ due to the fact that it had bad language within it therefore it would be
inappropriate for a younger audience therefore I know people which are giving their opinions are right for my
evaluation. This question improves the accuracy of my evaluation which would allow me to give a better
indication of the effectiveness on what I have produced and how I can improve it.
6. This question gives me a demographic indication alongside of the first question as it gives me an idea of what
people are evaluating my music video and ancillary products and whether it caters to both genders as I had
decided that I wanted to cater my music video to both genders however, slightly more to females due to the
context of the music video. According to my results, there were three males and nine females which
participated which tells me that the results given are from more females than males; which is a ratio of 1:3 and
this is appropriate for my evaluation as this was originally the figure which I had in my head as I wanted to cater
the music video to females as the song is more pop and stereotypically more females listen to pop music rather
than males. These results refine my results as I can understand who exactly was participating and although it is
anonymous, I can gain accurate results as I will have an outline of the people which are participating in my
survey.
Q2. Are you male and female?
7. 3. What genre would you say best describes this music video?
I asked this question as it enabled me to understand
whether the target audience understood what the
genre was as this was something that was very
important as if they did not understand the genre
then my production would not be successful as I
would have not achieved what I wanted; the whole
production would not be linked. The results came
out that the most people said that the genre was
Synthpop which leads me to believe that the
project was successful; although everyone did not
say it was Synthpop- the majority did proving that
the genre of the music video did come across and
the music video was appropriate for the song; if
the music video was a R n B music video, it would
not fit the genre of the song which would cause it
to be a unsuccessful project as I would have not
produced a music video appropriate for the genre
of my song. If the genre was seen as Synthpop, It
would mean that I had done the job successfully as
I would have catered the right music video for the
right song.
8. 4. Would you say the mise en scene (props, costume and location) is
appropriate for this genre?
I asked this question as it enabled me to understand fully, what aspects of the music video were generic and
worked best as this would allow me to know whether what I had done was feasible as otherwise all of my
planning and research would have been irrelevant; if my mise en scene did not fit in with the genre, it would
mean that the countless research done would not have been worth it and I should have spent longer in
planning or reverted back to it to ensure that all of the areas were covered in my music video as this was
essential. The location, costume and props are all things which make a music video and they all combined make
sure that the target audience acknowledge what the genre is and what is trying to be targeted; existing
Synthpop audiences would not enjoy the music video if it was not generic therefore in order to attract the
audience, ensuring that the music video is generic means that there would be a larger target audience- if a rap
audience saw a rock music video, they would not like it and would be less likely to listen to the song which
would cause the music video to be unsuccessful and would mean that the artist would generate a loss. The
music video is very important as it is something which is put onto social media sites and on the television
therefore it is put towards a mass audience reinforcing the fact that it is very important that the genre is
discovered within it to give an insight of what the artist is like and what the music is like which would ensure
that the right target audience is being appealed to and new audience is attracted to it also. Within the next few
slides, I have elaborated on the results.
9. All target audience said that the location was appropriate for the music video which clarifies that the research
which I did was worth it as it was believed that the locations used within the music video were all done
effectively as it indicated that the genre was Synthpop which would ensure that the audience notice and want
to watch it and find out more about the artist or listen to more of the artists music which would efficiently
promote the artist to generate more success for the artist and the record label. The location is very important
as it reflects genre through the emotions attempted to be shown, for example, a desolated woods would be
appropriate for Synthpop as it is a dark theme whereas if it is a music video for a jazz genre, a rural location
would be better, for example, a theatre with it performance based rather than a narrative and a I have used a
particular location, it is verified that it was effective as the target audience first established the genre and then
agree that the location is appropriate for it.
10. The following results were identical to the first set which was about the location which shows that as a
combination, the mise en scene was believed to be appropriate for the genre and as the target audience felt
this, it gave the impression that it was very useful as they were able to identify the genre due to thee aspects. If
they did not believe that it was appropriate it would mean that it would not correctly represent the genre
therefore as the target audience believe that it was appropriate, it allows me to establish that the music video
was successful.
11. 5. would you say this is a generic music video for this genre?
This was a very important question for me as I was able to establish whether the audience believed it was a generic
music video as the Synthpop genre has a very broad set of conventions and within itself attempts to be very
indie and different in everything it does therefore I could understand through the results whether or not it was
seen as a mainstream video. The results showed that 85% of the people believed that it was generic however
15% of people believed that it was not generic which allows me to understand that most people believed it to
be generic which means that it would be something that they would be used to watching which connotes that
it would be something in which they would enjoy as they have seen it before and are familiar with it. Even
though it was a minority that thought that it was not generic, this would most likely mean that they would be
intrigued by it and feel as if they would want to know more about the artist because of the fact that it is not
generic and they would want to discover more about their music as it is a evolving artist. The music video was
deemed as generic therefore I felt that I successfully included generic themes of the genre as it was noticed by
the target audience therefore meaning I have efficiently incorporated the conventions and themes.
12. 6. In your opinion, is there consistency between the digipak, magazine advert and the
music video?
This was an essential question as it was important that all of my productions interlinked as if it did not then there
would be no correlation between the ancillary productions and the music video therefore this does not
construct a realistic production as if in reality a music video and its album cover were not remotely similar, it
would not be recognised and especially for a new artist, people would not be able to notice who the artist is
and what is being promoted. The magazine and digipak were also things in which I made and I had the
intention of ensuring that they all interlinked and this question would let me know whether or not what I had
produced was successful; the results show that all of the people which were participating in my survey agreed
that there was consistency which remarks a real production which allows me to understand that this is realistic
and I was able to make sure that it ensembles appropriate promotional products. There were the same colours
used in all of my productions and my digipak appeared among my magazine advert as this allowed my target
audience to understand that it is the same artist and they would be familiar with all the products and want to
purchase the song; the magazine advert also features a image from a scene of the music video which creates
awareness which is something which the target audience noticed therefore proving that the consistency that
was kept benefitted me.
13. 7. In which magazine would you expect to see this advert?
This question reinforces the genre as I am able to see what the audience expect- with the genre being Synthpop I
would be expecting that they would name magazines which are not very mainstream and are for alternative
artists or for magazines which are for pop artists. The magazines which were said were indie pop, young voices,
pop magazine, a popular media magazine, cosmopolitan, an indie mag and NME (all displayed above) and so on
which are all magazines which are related to pop or indie which fits in with my genre as it is Synthpop which is
synthesized pop therefore being in a sub-genre of the actual mainstream genre. I think that the magazine
choices enhances the idea that the ancillary products fit into the genre as although it was not directly said , it
was inferred by the feedback. If the target audience were to say that the magazine advert was best suited in a
magazine such as “XXL” it would be clear that my magazine advert was not done appropriately to fit the genre
as it is a magzine which is based around rap artists therefore I would have to go back and change the way it
looked in order to ensure that it worked with all of my media products and incorporated themes which were
generic.
14. 8. Would you class this music video as mainstream?
This was a very important question as I wanted to know whether they believed it as a mainstream video as the
genre itself is a very indie genre therefore this would allow me to know whether or not the audience saw it as
indie. The music video was seen as mainstream as a total of 9 people said that it was mainstream which gives
the impression that they believed that it was already something which is out there; this is what I had aimed for
as although it is an independent genre, I wanted to ensure that the music video attracted attention and people
wanted to watch it rather than it branching out and being too different as it would not be certain that they
would like it, especially for a new artist which needs to be promoted. I believe it is good that the audience
thought that the music video as it means that it was familiar to them and it is something which would be
visually interesting and popular as it is what everyone is listening to and is watching it, benefitting my artist and
the record label. I was pleased with these results and thought that I had done my music successfully as I had
achieved what I intended.
15. 9.Was the narrative clear?
This is a question which I asked in order to discover whether the music video was clear enough; this was as I tried to
create the music video in a creative way , for example, using a game of hide and seek to infer that there is
cheating; this was something which I felt I wanted to include in order to incorporate some of the Synthpop
theme. The results stated that the narrative was clear as there were 10 people which said that they thought it
was clear and even though there were two people which said that it was not, this was only a minority and I
knew that this would be the case because of how I presented themes in my music video as I wanted it to look
different- narrative is very important as if it is not done correctly, it is much better doing a performance based
video therefore it is essential that if done, it is done effectively. I feel that I presented the narrative very
efficiently as it was clear whilst being visually interesting due to the fact that it was innovative and the events
which occurred have not happened in that way which concludes that even though it was a mainstream video, it
still had distinctive features.
