The Philippine Insurrection
The Philippine Insurrection of 1899–1902 was a little different than most insurgencies. Using Mao's 3
phases of an insurgency, which I will break down below.
The native demand for liberation from Spain had been building since the 1880s. In 1892 a poor
warehouseman by the name of Andres Bonifacio organized a group called the Katiunan, hoping to drive
the Spaniard's out of the Philippines. As in other insurgencies, we are seeing groups coming together for
the same objective, but not all insurgent groups get along. In 1896 after a reign of terror against the
islanders, Emilio Aguinaldo, a rival group leader, took over leadership by having Bonifacio executed. The
insurgency was forced into the hills, but the fighting continued. The people wanted Spain out and
supported an independent Philippines. In 1897 Spain paid Aguinaldo off to stop the fighting and sent him
to Hong Kong. This put the insurgency back into survival mode and brought a temporary peace.
Aguinaldo made a pact with the United States which was at war with Spain at the time. With the assistance
of Commodore Dewey they were able to have a decisive victory over the Spanish in Manila. June 12th
then became Philippine Independence Day in 1898. The Americans seemed reluctant to leave and in
December Spain formally ceded the Philippines to the United States in the Paris Peace Treaty. In January
1899 Aguinaldo staged an inauguration of the First Philippine Republic. This was an uneasy peace,
because what was

Essay About Katipunan
Katipunan. An association called Kataastaasan Kagalang–galang na Katipunan nang mga Anak ng Bayan
or Katipunan was founded on July 7, 1892 after the arrest of Dr. Jose Rizal due to his establishment of
Liga Filipina. Rizal's arrest was a shock to the Filipino people because he was the symbol of freedom to
them. The members performed blood compact and used their blood to sign their membership papers.
Katipunan is a secret organization which had three aims: political, moral and civic. Politically,
independence from Spain; morally, to teach moral values among the members; and civic, to help other
members of the association. Katipunan had three kinds of members: Katipon, Kawal and Bayan. The
highest member of the association was called Bayani and their password was Rizal. Dr. Jose Rizal was
recognized as honorary chairman. The Kawal used GOMBURZA as their password while the Katipon used
Anak ng Bayan. The passwords were used to keep the Katipunan in secret from the Spanish authorities.
The members were farmers and fishermen during the day ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Malolos Congress was credited by producing a supreme law distinguished for its democratic and
pluralist ideals. These were embodied in the following provisions: the distribution of power in three
separate branches of government, (1) a legislature which was unicameral– the "Assembly" of elected
representatives, (2) the Executive branch, represented by the President supported by a Cabinet, and (3) the
Judiciary composed of the Supreme Court, headed by a Chief Justice who was elected by the Assembly,
and lower courts. The Constitution also protected the people against the abuse of power with a registry of
individual and national rights, and instilled with the principle that sovereignty resided in the

Tobacco Regulation Act Of 2003
I should like to reply in three different aspects: 1. Smoking in Philippine Setting, 2. Related Diseases to
Smoking in the Philippines, and 3. Comparison between Philippines and Canada on Smoking
1. Smoking in Philippine Setting
A joint collaborative effort of the Republic of the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) and National
Statistics Office, through DOH's100% Smoke–Free Philippines campaign backed by Philippine's Republic
Act 9211, The Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, conducted two related important studies regarding
smoking. Both researches were published last February 16, 2012 as factsheets for public references. The
first study focuses on Youth/Student population and the second one was on adult.
Under the youth research, Philippines Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), it concluded that 46.2% of
students had ever smoked cigarettes, which is tantamount to more than 1 in 5 students surveyed. Almost 9
in 10 of students surveyed saw anti–smoking media messages and over two–thirds of them think smoke
from other is harmful. The study further concluded that approximately 86% of the current smokers want to
stop smoking.

Thesis Statement Of Architectural Drawing
CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
"An artist can make a cart with square wheels, but an architect can't" – Louis Kahn, American Architect.
An architectural drawing is a technical drawing of a structure or building. These are used by architects to
develop a design, to communicate their ideas and concepts, to convince clients, to enable a building
contractor to construct it, and to make a record of a building that already exists.
Drawing, sketches and animations are just some of non–verbal languages used by architects to show their
works. Truly, architects communicate through drawings. Architecture students are going to be doing a lot
of drawing in their five years. Sketching and drawing will seems to be the foundation ... Show more

It may help them to decide whether the students will continue pursuing architecture or not.
College Architecture Students
The study can also help the college architecture students to enhance their drawing skills. Also, this research
can encourage architecture students who have low confidence because they think that being not good in
drawing is a hindrance in succeeding.
College Architecture Professors
The College Architecture Professors will understand more the capabilities of each student. Professors may
conclude that not all the students have the talent or the same level of skills in drawing. This research will
increase the awareness of the professors about the differences of the students and how to adjust to help
them to enhance their drawing skills.
Future Researchers
The research can also be beneficial to the future researches since the information presented in the study
may be used as reference in conducting related researches. This study will also give them a background
and overview about the importance of drawing skills for architecture students.

Independence Day Speech
"Filipinos are worth dying for." this is the famous line of the late senator Noynoy Aquino. Maybe our
fellow Filipino who fought for the freedom of the Filipinos from the invaders of our country will also
agree with what Noynoy Aquino has said. An Independence Day is an annual celebration commemorating
the anniversary of a nation's assumption of independent statehood, usually after ceasing to be a colony or
part of another state, more rarely after the end of a military occupation. Most countries honor their
respective independence day as a national holiday and some countries or nations' independence–date

Imperialism in the Philippines
For over 400 years, the Philippines has been imperialized by the Spanish and the U.S. in order to gain
more power. Under their control, there have been many changes to culture, tradition, religion, and
language due to heavy influence from both countries. Imperialism is a policy where a country extends its
power by conquering other territories through diplomatic or military power. Imperialism is heavily driven
by the rise of industry and the need for raw materials to manufacture new firearms and consumer goods.
The Spanish treated the Filipinos ruthlessly, forcing taxes, labor, and seizing crops and livestock without
proper compensation. The U.S.' imperialization caused English to become one of the Philippines' main
languages, hospitals, schools, and railroad systems were established, and present day Philippine
government shares similarities to U.S. government.
Section 1
First colonized by the Spanish in 1521, the U.S. never had official control of the Philippines until 1899,
when the U.S. won the Spanish–American war. Eventually, the U.S. acquired the Philippines through the
Treaty of Paris, where it states that Spain's control of the Philippine Islands will be transferred to the
United States for $20,000,000. The Filipinos first viewed the conflict between Spain and the U.S. as the
perfect time to break away from Spanish rule and secure an alliance with the U.S. The U.S.'

The Trading Networks Of The 17th And The 18th Centuries
The trading networks of the 17th and the 18th centuries, probably the reason America is here and why
we're Americans. That is because this trade was a new type of trade, international trade or involving the
whole world in one network, mass production, diversity, and mixing of cultures. As a result of such trading
networks the western hemisphere was now being populated more heavily and the first colonies where
starting to form. Documents 2, and 4 describes how Chinese greed for silver changed a lot of old patterns,

This changed patterns of trade deficit where before it was on the Portuguese it was now on China who
were pouring out everything in exchange for only silver which they didn't even reinvest in their economy.
This source isn't that reliable mainly because it was written by a British merchant who tried convincing
Britain into joining trade. Therefore it was a secondary document from the outside looking in so all data
may not be correct. Thus the global distribution of silver greatened the connection between the west and
the east eliminating old patterns of trade deficit. In the documents 3, 1, 5, and 6 they discuss how when
silver came into the picture many payment and old money accounting methods changed. Document 3 talks
about how in China the economy began to fall due to cheaper grain harvest. The reason that the harvest
was cheaper is because the taxes where now forced to be paid in silver which China dispersed very little
silver into the economy. It is a reliable document because elders of villages directly told Wang Xijue a
court official of China about the first hand suffering of its people. Document 1 states how the introduction
of silver to China created much greed and whoever has a lot can never have enough but whoever has little
has enough. That is because of the suffering brought on by silver whoever had a little needed to worry

Moor Research Paper
The derivation of the English term, "Moor," is the Greek word, "μαυρο" or "mavro" which accurately
means "black, blackened or charred", says taneter.org. They go on to then say, how this English term
'Moor' has been used to describe black or very dark things such as, "Mavri Thalassa" which refers to the
Black Sea. Ancient Greeks used this term to describe the complexion of Africans or objects of that matter.
The origination of the term 'Moor' is even used in various terms that describe the color 'black'. For example
the Spanish word 'blackberry', is translated in Spanish as 'zaramora' , which carries the root word 'mor'.
The term 'Moor', also define a partial part of our postsecondary education, and example of this can be
Morehouse College. The college itself describe itself as, "The only all–male historically black institution of
higher learning in the United States." They go on to even then designate it as, "the college of choice for
black men." It is now evident of the trend that initiated from Renaissance ages in Europe to our everyday
lives today. Therefore it creates a proposal asking us, what was the influential things the Moors brought to
Europe during the age of the Renaissance? The influential things the Moors brought to Europe during the

Jimenez was responsible for coining the latest tourism come–on, "It's More Fun in the Philippines." He
talked about literature and how it can help the tourism industry which, as we all know, has yet to be fully
exploited. So many countries in our part of the world, particularly Thailand, have reaped millions from the
flood of tourists visiting these countries. We get only a trickle, for though we have great possibilities, there
is not enough global interest in our country and its attractions. Much of this is due to our own myopia, of
our leaders who do not understand or realize the myriad possibilities here if we only know how to use
them! Jimenez should produce long–range programs. This is one common fault of government; a new
administration takes over and new policies are made no continuity is pursued. Will the slogan, "It's More
Fun in the Philippines" last only three years from now.? Will it be replaced when a new administration
takes over? This is a minor point; will initiatives today be continued in the future? Does the present
administration accept the past administration program enough to pursue its good aspects? Will our tourism
executives use them? Just consider this: how many visitors go to England, to visit Stratford–on–Avon
because they have enjoyed William Shakespeare's plays. Those tourists clambering up the hills in Greece
how many of them are there because they read the Homeric classics? And Spain, which reaps so much

The War Of The American War
The year was 1898, and America had just finished fighting Spain in Cuba and the Philippines. Spain had
been in control of the islands, but when they islands wanted their independence America volunteered to
help. America promoted the islands fighting back, and were encouraging the revolution against Spain.
Little did these nations know that once Spain had lost, America got signed over everything in the Treaty of
Paris, and they did not plan to let these premiere locations go without another fight. We wanted the
Philippines for three main reasons: missionaries wanted to spread Christianity and the word of God, we
couldn 't leave them to govern themselves because they were unfit, as well as business leaders wanted a
way to easily become immersed in the vast markets of China. So in February of 1899, America found
themselves in another bloody war, known only as the Philippine–American War. Throughout the history of
America, there has always been the belief of the "white mans burden". This means that it is the
responsibility of white people to find and save non–white people from themselves by forcing our culture
and governing upon them. Through this practice, we believe we are helping and improving the lives of the
poor and unfortunate people of the world. One large aspect of this is to bring and teach the word of God to
the uncivilized people that do not have the opportunity to learn and experience about it for themselves.

business firms, prestigious universities, and remarkable tourist spots located in it. The most remarkable
tourist spot in Manila is the Luneta Park. This park has witnessed some significant events in Philippine
History, particularly, the execution of the Philippines' national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. In commemoration of
Rizal's patriotism, the Philippine Assembly approved the monumentalizing of the Rizal Statue in 1913. The
Rizal Monument was then formally declared a National Monument by the National Historical Commission
of the Philippines (NHCP), a part of a National Historical Site by the former National Historical Institute,
and a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum (Hilbay, 2015). As of today, the Rizal

Philippine American War Essay
Philippine–American War In the past centuries, colonialism has been a country's way of gaining great
amounts of wealth and cheap labor. The idea of colonialism has been heavily controversial, in terms of
today's standards. In the United States of America, Americans were also against this idea, since they also
have been under the harsh rule of the British empire. However, after the Spanish–American war ended in
1898 through the Treaty of Paris, the US government decided to own the colonies that have been ceded by
the Spanish. This decision marked the turning point in American history because it violated their
constitution and redefined what it means to be the"upholders" of democracy. In one of the acquired
colonies, the Philippines expected ultimate independence instead of a change of colonial power. This
allowed conflict to mount between the two countries, which prompted the Filipinos to stage a revolt
against the Americans. Unfortunately, because of the U.S. government's dedication to establish its
sovereignty over the islands, the desire of the Filipinos to gain their independence, and the economic
implications of the islands towards America, the two countries were unable to form a compromise leading
to the Philippine–American War. This resulted to the death of more than 250,000 Filipinos and 4,200 U.S.
troops. Ironically, this ugly encounter between the Americans and the Filipinos brought peace and strong
relations after the war that last until today. The Philippines

My Life During The Summer After I Walked A Mile Essay
During the summer after I turned thirteen, I went on a vacation that changed my entire perspective on life.
"Americans are so spoiled." I remember hearing my mother proclaim this numerous times growing up. I
would shake my head or roll my eyes every time, since I never quite understood what it meant. Of course,
I had nothing to compare it to. I grew up in the suburbs in a middle class family. I never wanted for
anything. I heard the stories of my mother and her siblings growing up; they lived in filth, they
occasionally skipped meals, all seven kids slept huddled together on concrete floors. I heard those stories
as if she was saying, "...I walked a mile to school, uphill both ways..." I never could have imagined the
reality of what the stories truly meant until I visited my birthplace, the Philippines, for the first time. I was
stubborn preteen, and I couldn't understand why my mother was forcing me to accompany her. I wasn't
familiar with my family in the Philippines and I didn't speak the language. I tried everything I could to get
out of it, nevertheless, my mother insisted it would be a "memorable experience." It was a long, twenty–
one hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. My uncle, whom I hadn't remembered ever meeting, picked us up
in the terminal. My mother whispered and reminded me to be polite, to honor my elders by remembering
to "bless" them. Embarrassed, and with a slight roll of my eyes, I obediently bowed my head and placed
the top of his hand to my forehead. I

The United States And The 21st Century Essay
Today, in the 21st century, English has become one of the most used languages around the world. It is so
widely used that linguists have considered it to be the new 'lingua franca'. Along with its language the
United States is one of the most influential countries around the globe. There is no denying its presence in
everything from international politics to entertainment. In fact, it is thought to be the only country that
rivals the world 's once–great empires in terms of its global impact. In an article written by Mclean, she
proclaims, "the U.S dominates world politics by providing the language, ideas, and institutional
frameworks around which much of the world turns" (2). However, the United States did not just become an
imperial power over night. From the middle of the 19th century till present time the U.S has been
intervening in foreign lands. One country that has been immensely influenced by English colonization, to
present day, is the Island of the Philippines. Whether it was consciously or not, the control of the
Philippines by U.S after the Spanish–American War was a small step towards world power. A brief look
into Philippines' history shows how much different the island would've been without English rule.
Although the Philippines were not pleased with the transfer of power over to America in the Treaty of
Paris, the short 50 year rule proves to have had a major impact on Philippine culture, customs, and politics
today.

Example Of Demythologizing Rizal
Demythologizing Rizal Whether you are discussing your neighbor, your foe, a government official or
somebody who lived 200 years prior, sex never neglects to catch individuals' attention and imagination. In
spite of a few affirmations about Adolf Hitler's personal life, people still insist about the gossip that he was
an illegitimate son of Klara Polzl and Jose Rizal when Rizal visited Linz in 1887. Individuals attempted to
elaborate on the sexual experiences of previous presidents or our heroes. Many inquired as to whether
Andres Bonifacio's dowager, Gregoria de Jesus, was truly raped by Colonel Agapito Bonzon when they
were in imprisonment, or whether without a doubt General Antonio Luna's better half truly was a
presidential progenitor named Isidra Cojuangco. At whatever point there is negative information around a
hero, it is dependably seen as tattles paying little heed to the documentation. Perhaps this is a method for
adapting, on the grounds that our heroes have been glorified to the point that individuals can't envision ...

Zoological Park or more commonly called zoo is what you call a place wherein animals are held captive
and are on display for people to observe. Zoos are also called as menageries in some places. Menageries
are exhibits of animals, especially wild animals, in enclosures. During the ancient times, explorers,
aristocrats and noblemen showcase their power, wealth and expeditions through menageries. Explorers
bring back unfamiliar species of animals from their expedition. Ancient petroglyphs show evidences that
zoo owners hired care takers for the animals in captivity. Zoos were privately owned and were established

be able to accommodate even one monkey due to its condition. The enclosure is not big enough for
monkeys to roam around; the floor of the cage is also made from concrete which obviously does not

too small for her. Like the monkeys' cages, Mali's pen has concrete flooring. It also lacks natural elements
such as plants, trees, logs and such to resemble an elephant's natural habitat. Mali's pen looks very gloomy

leaves from dying trees. There were photos were posted in a destination review site by visitors wherein the
tigers were pictured surrounded by trash while sleeping. Second, the animals' health is in poor condition.

President Mckinley 's Influence On The Cuban Revolution
On June 26, 1897 President McKinley also convinced Madrid to end the policy of reconcentration and try
having programs to help the Cuban people. President McKinley proclaimed that America and Cuba had a
special relationship this seemed to be a threat towards Spain and that they should heed Americas request to
stop battling Cuba. The killing of Antonio Cánoras del Castillo made it easier for each region to
compromise. Because of his death General Valeriano Weyler wanted to help the refuges and to also form a
Cuban autonomy. The Queen of Spain Maria Christina came up with this plan during November of 1897
the rebels refused this proposition because they knew that Spain would stay in power and have a strong
army. Spain did not give up the idea of being in power and kept fighting a useless war. Many of the
Spanish peninsulares hated the idea of autonomy and would do anything in their power to stop the new
official Spanish policy. The revolts that were going on during this time made America not trust Spain and
made America believe that Spain cannot control their affairs. Cuba had many revolts for example, "both
sides in Cuba preferred war to reform, and the rebels declared for full independence" (342). On February
15th, 1898 an American ship named the Maine was visiting Havana, THE MAINE then exploded in the
harbor and had 266 casualties. With no evidence Spain was the first to blame for this travesty Assistant
Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed, "The Maine

What Is Macarthur's Last Speech
General MacArthur was station on the Philippine islands during the start of WWII. He commanded all of
the U.S troops on the island and had his command center stationed on Corregidor (Biography.com, 2012).
On this island he watched as the Japanese army invaded the Philippines. Outnumbered and outgunned,
MacArthur was forced to retreat to Australia. When he arrived in Australia he made his "I shall return"
speech. In this speech he promised that he would return to the Philippines and force the Japanese off the
islands. After a couple of years he finally gained enough troops to return to the Philippines. Once he was
on the island he gave his "I have returned" speech (Breuer, 2001). Reasons for Going Back The general
consensus is that MacArthur went back because of his father's past, his personal ego, or because of his
national duty. Many biographers or historians can agree that he went back for at least one of these reasons.
Geoffrey Perret said "MacArthur saw his return to the Philippines as a way of redeeming American
national pride and honor. And his own pride and honor" (PBS, 2012). If this is true then we must ask
ourselves why MacArthur's first speech back on the island was directed at the Philippines. The first reason

Americans morale was low because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This was also the biggest army America
has ever surrendered to another country (Biography.com, 2012). This hit every American and especially

death march, where thousands of American POWs were tortured and killed by the Japanese army. An
example was in the book "Ghost Soldiers." In this book it describes an event where the American POWs
were led into air raid shelters and then burned alive by the Japanese (Sides, 2001). MacArthur would have

Retraction Controversy Of Rizal
Rizal's Retraction Controversy
As of today, there is still an ongoing dispute regarding the controversy of Rizal's retraction before his
execution on the 30th of December, 1896. Other people insist that Rizal did retract while some says that he
did not. There are different evidences that appeared to defend each side. There were four well–known
reasons behind Rizal's retraction. First, He wanted to marry Josephine Bracken and to make her his wife
legally. Second, He wanted to protect his family. Third, He wanted to reforms from the Spanish
Government. Lastly, He wanted to heal the sickness of the Catholic Church. All theories came from the
retraction paper that was written by Rizal. In the said retraction paper, Rizal wrote that he is taking ...

In Father Balaguer's statement, he said that Rizal retracted because he wanted to marry Josephine Bracken,
who was a Catholic, but when he was asked to show a certificate, he was not able to present anything. It
was impossible for the marriage to be the reason of retraction because there was no marriage certificate
found. There was no certificate that legalizes the marriage between Josephine Bracken and Jose Rizal.
Rizal was not buried with a good standing. Rizal's body was buried ten months after his death. He was also
buried without a coffin in a cemetery for Anti–Catholic Church. He should have been buried properly if
ever he was converted back to the Catholicism.
In my opinion, Rizal did not retract before his execution. After reading some of the articles, I was
convinced that he did not retract. If he retracted before his execution, then why was he not buried
properly? He was buried in the place for those who are against the Catholic Church. He did not even get a
proper burial. If he died as a catholic, they should have given him the burial that deserves. Why would he
marry Josephine Bracken if he was to die? It was said earlier that the retraction was made for Rizal to be
able to marry the love of his life, which is Josephine Bracken, then why was there no marriage certificate
presented. Besides, why would he even bother to marry Josephine Bracken if he will die the next

The Republic Of The Philippines
The Philippines, officially recognized as the Republic of the Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia
composed of more than 7,000 islands. The archipelago is a country that has struggled to develop into a
thriving nation ever since the colonization of the Spanish. The citizens who reside here are a kind, loving,
giving, generous people that face a series of challenges with its poor infrastructure, and basic utilities.
None of this can stop these proud people from moving forward and making their mark in the world. With
one of the fastest growing economies in Asia and an equally growing population, this creates rifts

brings typhoons. Storms cause mass amounts of flooding and tidal waves throughout the country and are
the most damaging to the citizens and their structures. The dry season runs from November through May
and can be the harshest with April and May being the hottest times of the year. During the dry season, it is
tough for the unemployed to find work forcing the citizens without a place to go to live in crowded slums
making homes out of any material scraps they can find. Most of these homes do not have stoves or basic
cooking utensils, so families reside to eating inexpensive street foods or ready to eat noodles with what
little money they do have, all at the cost of their health. Similar to other countries a lot of these families
move to the urban region in pursuit of happiness and a better way of life. Instead, they end up moving into
a deeper state of poverty and a world of crime filled with violence, gangs, and drugs. Most of these
problems indeed are associated with the fact that the Philippines have a faster–growing population then

Intramuros a Must See
INTRODUCTION:
Less than an hour away from the hustle and bustle of hectic cities surrounding the capital of the Philippines
enters a whole different world. Before knowing the place being referred too, it must be kept in mind that if
every nation is like a human body then it must be right to consent that the country's capital city is its heart.
Therefore as it pulses with life, it also pups the same to other parts of the nation body and vice versa. This
is especially true about Metro Manila which itself is made up of several smaller cities and a handful of
municipalities. But this capital, Manila, also has a heart of its own: one entirely surrounded by stone walls,

Pedicabs can be hired for 100 pesos hour and it can take at least two hours to go and visit the interesting
places. Lastly keeping in mind it is one of the Filipinos ways of addressing the need for environmental–
friendly transportation (HealthBridge, 2010).
The third and one of the best ways to tour Intramuros is hiring a Kalesa. Kalesa is the Tagalog word for a
horse–drawn carriage which came to light in the Philippines during the 18th century by the Spaniards. At
that period, this mode of transportation was used only by the nobles and high ranked officials who could
afford it. But nowadays Kalesa are rarely used in the streets and are commonly seen in famous tourists'
spots and rural areas. Therefore to bring back the reminiscences on how Spaniards used to travel around
Philippines, it is highly recommendable to hire a Kalesa while touring Intramuros depending on the
budget. Kalesa are considered to be more expensive than the pedicabs nevertheless it can accommodate
more people depending on their sizes. The price range varies from 350 pesos to 600 pesos for that reason
its better to negotiate with the driver/kutchero before starting the tour as some of them rip off their
passengers (Ahab, 2010). These kutcheros have a quite outstanding knowledge about Intramuros hence the
two hour trip around Intramuros is worth it while riding a Kalesa .

Queen Anne's Revenge Essay

Most people travel the different places and destinations in the world to see different sightings that would

Brief Description Of Manila, Philippines
BODY
I. Brief Description of Manila, Philippines.
Manila is the capital of the Philippines and it is located in Luzon; which is the largest island in the
archipelago. Due to its convenient location for a trade route, it is known as the Pearl of the Orient.
Before Manila was rebuilt, the city suffered many episodes of destruction during World War II (WWII)
where the Japanese invasion occurred. Even though Manila is believed to be one of Southeast Asia's best
capital cities for its breathtaking views and culture, it has its flaws. Manila is filled with crime, corruption,
overpopulation, and the daily inevitable and cumbersome traffic jams. Yet, this city is still the biggest,
most developed and prosperous when compared to the other cities in the Philippines.
II. The Importance of Preserving Historical Landmarks
Historical landmarks are just as important as every other building that has ever existed. They all have a
purpose; yet people still choose to demolish these structures. It shows a lack of respect towards the
architectural monuments. Most believe that creating brand new buildings is cheaper and more beneficial
rather than maintaining the ancient ones but it is the opposite. You can save money by preserving them;
building a brand new structure costs more.

Compare And Contrast Us Imperialism In The Panama And The...
U.S. Imperialism in the Panama Canal and the Philippines What would you do to gain more power? The
definition of imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or
military force. The Philippines and the Panama Canal are two victims of U.S. Imperialism during the early
1800s to the 1900s. During this time the U.S. used several foreign policies, tactics, and concepts to gain
control over new territories. Theodore Roosevelt used his foreign policy of dollar diplomacy to gain the
Philippines and he used his big stick diplomacy as well as the dollar diplomacy to get the Panama Canal,
these two territories were consumed by the U.S. and they have many similarities and differences during
their transfer of powers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the Spanish– American War, the Philippines was to be given
to the U.S. for $20 million dollars. This overall means Roosevelt was using the "dollar diplomacy" method
because he used U.S. money to gain more land. When the Filipino army went against the U.S. and wanted
independence Roosevelt let in a little bit of his "big stick diplomacy" because he used military force to
control the land when they weren't listening. When it comes to the Panama Canal Roosevelt used the "big
stick diplomacy" and "dollar diplomacy" to gain control of the canal. He used the big stick diplomacy
because when Colombia didn't ratify the treaty granting the U.S. control over the canal they sided with
rebels in Panama to help them get their independence. The U.S. sent military assistance and war ships in
Colombia's territorial waters to show that Panama's independence was be given one way or another.
Roosevelt also used the dollar diplomacy because he used money to persuade the Panama rebels to declare
independence, he paid a lot of money to Panama to grant him the rights to the canal, and he paid the
French for their plans they had originally made to build the

The Philippine Insurrection

  • 1. The Philippine Insurrection The Philippine Insurrection of 1899–1902 was a little different than most insurgencies. Using Mao's 3 phases of an insurgency, which I will break down below. The native demand for liberation from Spain had been building since the 1880s. In 1892 a poor warehouseman by the name of Andres Bonifacio organized a group called the Katiunan, hoping to drive the Spaniard's out of the Philippines. As in other insurgencies, we are seeing groups coming together for the same objective, but not all insurgent groups get along. In 1896 after a reign of terror against the islanders, Emilio Aguinaldo, a rival group leader, took over leadership by having Bonifacio executed. The insurgency was forced into the hills, but the fighting continued. The people wanted Spain out and supported an independent Philippines. In 1897 Spain paid Aguinaldo off to stop the fighting and sent him to Hong Kong. This put the insurgency back into survival mode and brought a temporary peace. Aguinaldo made a pact with the United States which was at war with Spain at the time. With the assistance of Commodore Dewey they were able to have a decisive victory over the Spanish in Manila. June 12th then became Philippine Independence Day in 1898. The Americans seemed reluctant to leave and in December Spain formally ceded the Philippines to the United States in the Paris Peace Treaty. In January 1899 Aguinaldo staged an inauguration of the First Philippine Republic. This was an uneasy peace, because what was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay About Katipunan Katipunan. An association called Kataastaasan Kagalang–galang na Katipunan nang mga Anak ng Bayan or Katipunan was founded on July 7, 1892 after the arrest of Dr. Jose Rizal due to his establishment of Liga Filipina. Rizal's arrest was a shock to the Filipino people because he was the symbol of freedom to them. The members performed blood compact and used their blood to sign their membership papers. Katipunan is a secret organization which had three aims: political, moral and civic. Politically, independence from Spain; morally, to teach moral values among the members; and civic, to help other members of the association. Katipunan had three kinds of members: Katipon, Kawal and Bayan. The highest member of the association was called Bayani and their password was Rizal. Dr. Jose Rizal was recognized as honorary chairman. The Kawal used GOMBURZA as their password while the Katipon used Anak ng Bayan. The passwords were used to keep the Katipunan in secret from the Spanish authorities. The members were farmers and fishermen during the day ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. Imperialism In Philippines 170140076 Natasha Schottland H Modern World History December 22, 2016 Imperialism in the Philippines For over 400 years, the Philippines has been imperialized by the Spanish and the U.S. in order to gain more power. Under their control, there have been many changes to culture, tradition, religion, and language due to heavy influence from both countries. Imperialism is a policy where a country extends its power by conquering other territories through diplomatic or military power. Imperialism is heavily driven by the rise of industry and the need for raw materials to manufacture new firearms and consumer goods. The Spanish treated the Filipinos ruthlessly, forcing taxes, labor, and seizing crops and livestock without proper compensation. The U.S.' imperialization caused English to become one of the Philippines' main languages, hospitals, schools, and railroad systems were established, and present day Philippine government shares similarities to U.S. government. Section 1 First colonized by the Spanish in 1521, the U.S. never had official control of the Philippines until 1899, when the U.S. won the Spanish–American war. Eventually, the U.S. acquired the Philippines through the Treaty of Paris, where it states that Spain's control of the Philippine Islands will be transferred to the United States for $20,000,000. The Filipinos first viewed the conflict between Spain and the U.S. as the perfect time to break away from Spanish rule and secure an alliance with the U.S. The U.S.' ... As a result of such trading networks the western hemisphere was now being populated more heavily and the first colonies where starting to form. This changed patterns of trade deficit where before it was on the Portuguese it was now on China who were pouring out everything in exchange for only silver which they didn't even reinvest in their economy. This source isn't that reliable mainly because it was written by a British merchant who tried convincing Britain into joining trade. Therefore it was a secondary document from the outside looking in so all data may not be correct. Thus the global distribution of silver greatened the connection between the west and the east eliminating old patterns of trade deficit. In the documents 3, 1, 5, and 6 they discuss how when silver came into the picture many payment and old money accounting methods changed. Document 3 talks about how in China the economy began to fall due to cheaper grain harvest. The reason that the harvest was cheaper is because the taxes where now forced to be paid in silver which China dispersed very little silver into the economy. It is a reliable document because elders of villages directly told Wang Xijue a court official of China about the first hand suffering of its people. • 11. Moor Research Paper The derivation of the English term, "Moor," is the Greek word, "μαυρο" or "mavro" which accurately means "black, blackened or charred", says taneter.org. They go on to then say, how this English term 'Moor' has been used to describe black or very dark things such as, "Mavri Thalassa" which refers to the Black Sea. Ancient Greeks used this term to describe the complexion of Africans or objects of that matter. The origination of the term 'Moor' is even used in various terms that describe the color 'black'. For example the Spanish word 'blackberry', is translated in Spanish as 'zaramora' , which carries the root word 'mor'. The term 'Moor', also define a partial part of our postsecondary education, and example of this can be Morehouse College. The college itself describe itself as, "The only all–male historically black institution of higher learning in the United States." Jimenez was responsible for coining the latest tourism come–on, "It's More Fun in the Philippines." He talked about literature and how it can help the tourism industry which, as we all know, has yet to be fully exploited. So many countries in our part of the world, particularly Thailand, have reaped millions from the flood of tourists visiting these countries. We get only a trickle, for though we have great possibilities, there is not enough global interest in our country and its attractions. Much of this is due to our own myopia, of our leaders who do not understand or realize the myriad possibilities here if we only know how to use them! Jimenez should produce long–range programs. This is one common fault of government; a new administration takes over and new policies are made no continuity is pursued. Will the slogan, "It's More Fun in the Philippines" last only three years from now.? Will it be replaced when a new administration takes over? This is a minor point; will initiatives today be continued in the future? Does the present administration accept the past administration program enough to pursue its good aspects? Will our tourism executives use them? Just consider this: how many visitors go to England, to visit Stratford–on–Avon because they have enjoyed William Shakespeare's plays. • 13. The War Of The American War The year was 1898, and America had just finished fighting Spain in Cuba and the Philippines. Spain had been in control of the islands, but when they islands wanted their independence America volunteered to help. America promoted the islands fighting back, and were encouraging the revolution against Spain. Little did these nations know that once Spain had lost, America got signed over everything in the Treaty of Paris, and they did not plan to let these premiere locations go without another fight. We wanted the Philippines for three main reasons: missionaries wanted to spread Christianity and the word of God, we couldn 't leave them to govern themselves because they were unfit, as well as business leaders wanted a way to easily become immersed in the vast markets of China. So in February of 1899, America found themselves in another bloody war, known only as the Philippine–American War. Throughout the history of America, there has always been the belief of the "white mans burden". This means that it is the responsibility of white people to find and save non–white people from themselves by forcing our culture and governing upon them. Through this practice, we believe we are helping and improving the lives of the poor and unfortunate people of the world. One large aspect of this is to bring and teach the word of God to the uncivilized people that do not have the opportunity to learn and experience about it for themselves. The most remarkable tourist spot in Manila is the Luneta Park. This park has witnessed some significant events in Philippine History, particularly, the execution of the Philippines' national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. In commemoration of Rizal's patriotism, the Philippine Assembly approved the monumentalizing of the Rizal Statue in 1913. • 15. Philippine American War Essay Philippine–American War In the past centuries, colonialism has been a country's way of gaining great amounts of wealth and cheap labor. The idea of colonialism has been heavily controversial, in terms of today's standards. In the United States of America, Americans were also against this idea, since they also have been under the harsh rule of the British empire. However, after the Spanish–American war ended in 1898 through the Treaty of Paris, the US government decided to own the colonies that have been ceded by the Spanish. This decision marked the turning point in American history because it violated their constitution and redefined what it means to be the"upholders" of democracy. In one of the acquired colonies, the Philippines expected ultimate independence instead of a change of colonial power. This allowed conflict to mount between the two countries, which prompted the Filipinos to stage a revolt against the Americans. Unfortunately, because of the U.S. government's dedication to establish its sovereignty over the islands, the desire of the Filipinos to gain their independence, and the economic implications of the islands towards America, the two countries were unable to form a compromise leading to the Philippine–American War. This resulted to the death of more than 250,000 Filipinos and 4,200 U.S. troops. Ironically, this ugly encounter between the Americans and the Filipinos brought peace and strong relations after the war that last until today. The Philippines ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. My Life During The Summer After I Walked A Mile Essay During the summer after I turned thirteen, I went on a vacation that changed my entire perspective on life. "Americans are so spoiled." I remember hearing my mother proclaim this numerous times growing up. I would shake my head or roll my eyes every time, since I never quite understood what it meant. Of course, I had nothing to compare it to. I grew up in the suburbs in a middle class family. I never wanted for anything. I heard the stories of my mother and her siblings growing up; they lived in filth, they occasionally skipped meals, all seven kids slept huddled together on concrete floors. I heard those stories as if she was saying, "...I walked a mile to school, uphill both ways..." I never could have imagined the reality of what the stories truly meant until I visited my birthplace, the Philippines, for the first time. I was stubborn preteen, and I couldn't understand why my mother was forcing me to accompany her. I wasn't familiar with my family in the Philippines and I didn't speak the language. I tried everything I could to get out of it, nevertheless, my mother insisted it would be a "memorable experience." It was a long, twenty– one hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. My uncle, whom I hadn't remembered ever meeting, picked us up in the terminal. My mother whispered and reminded me to be polite, to honor my elders by remembering to "bless" them. Embarrassed, and with a slight roll of my eyes, I obediently bowed my head and placed the top of his hand to my forehead. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. The United States And The 21st Century Essay Today, in the 21st century, English has become one of the most used languages around the world. It is so widely used that linguists have considered it to be the new 'lingua franca'. Along with its language the United States is one of the most influential countries around the globe. There is no denying its presence in everything from international politics to entertainment. In fact, it is thought to be the only country that rivals the world 's once–great empires in terms of its global impact. In an article written by Mclean, she proclaims, "the U.S dominates world politics by providing the language, ideas, and institutional frameworks around which much of the world turns" (2). However, the United States did not just become an imperial power over night. From the middle of the 19th century till present time the U.S has been intervening in foreign lands. One country that has been immensely influenced by English colonization, to present day, is the Island of the Philippines. Whether it was consciously or not, the control of the Philippines by U.S after the Spanish–American War was a small step towards world power. A brief look into Philippines' history shows how much different the island would've been without English rule. Although the Philippines were not pleased with the transfer of power over to America in the Treaty of Paris, the short 50 year rule proves to have had a major impact on Philippine culture, customs, and politics today. The zoo's main attraction, Mali – a 40 year old elephant – is housed in an enclosure too small for her. Like the monkeys' cages, Mali's pen has concrete flooring. It also lacks natural elements such as plants, trees, logs and such to resemble an elephant's natural habitat. Mali's pen looks very gloomy and boring. The tiger enclosures also look sad as its – yet again – concrete flooring is covered with dead leaves from dying trees. President McKinley proclaimed that America and Cuba had a special relationship this seemed to be a threat towards Spain and that they should heed Americas request to stop battling Cuba. The killing of Antonio Cánoras del Castillo made it easier for each region to compromise. Because of his death General Valeriano Weyler wanted to help the refuges and to also form a Cuban autonomy. The Queen of Spain Maria Christina came up with this plan during November of 1897 the rebels refused this proposition because they knew that Spain would stay in power and have a strong army. Spain did not give up the idea of being in power and kept fighting a useless war. Many of the Spanish peninsulares hated the idea of autonomy and would do anything in their power to stop the new official Spanish policy. The revolts that were going on during this time made America not trust Spain and made America believe that Spain cannot control their affairs. Cuba had many revolts for example, "both sides in Cuba preferred war to reform, and the rebels declared for full independence" (342). He commanded all of the U.S troops on the island and had his command center stationed on Corregidor (Biography.com, 2012). On this island he watched as the Japanese army invaded the Philippines. Outnumbered and outgunned, MacArthur was forced to retreat to Australia. When he arrived in Australia he made his "I shall return" speech. In this speech he promised that he would return to the Philippines and force the Japanese off the islands. After a couple of years he finally gained enough troops to return to the Philippines. Once he was on the island he gave his "I have returned" speech (Breuer, 2001). Reasons for Going Back The general consensus is that MacArthur went back because of his father's past, his personal ego, or because of his national duty. Many biographers or historians can agree that he went back for at least one of these reasons. Geoffrey Perret said "MacArthur saw his return to the Philippines as a way of redeeming American national pride and honor. And his own pride and honor" (PBS, 2012). Kalesa is the Tagalog word for a horse–drawn carriage which came to light in the Philippines during the 18th century by the Spaniards. At that period, this mode of transportation was used only by the nobles and high ranked officials who could afford it. But nowadays Kalesa are rarely used in the streets and are commonly seen in famous tourists' spots and rural areas. Therefore to bring back the reminiscences on how Spaniards used to travel around Philippines, it is highly recommendable to hire a Kalesa while touring Intramuros depending on the budget. Kalesa are considered to be more expensive than the pedicabs nevertheless it can accommodate more people depending on their sizes. The price range varies from 350 pesos to 600 pesos for that reason its better to negotiate with the driver/kutchero before starting the tour as some of them rip off their passengers (Ahab, 2010). These kutcheros have a quite outstanding knowledge about Intramuros hence the two hour trip around Intramuros is worth it while riding a Kalesa .
