Taking a Closer Look at Québec Essays
Quebec, or Québec in French, is a province in east central Canada. It is the largest province in area. It
has a predominantly French speaking population and is the only province to have an official provincial
language of French. The capital or Quebec is Quebec City. The population of Quebec is 8.081 million.
Quebec has three natural regions: the Canadian Shield, the St. Lawrence Lowlands, and the
Appalachians. The Canadian Shield is also called the Precambrian Shield or the Laurentian Plateau. It
is a big block of ancient crystalline rock. There is an abundance of glacial debris and exposed rock.
The Canadian Shield has a harsh environment and a varying terrain. The St. Lawrence Lowlands, or
Valley, lies along the St. Lawrence River ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the monuments is the Champlain monument which pays tribute to Samuel de Champlain who
founded Quebec City. Another monument is the Churchill and Roosevelt Monument which
commemorates the visit of the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the American President
Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. A third monument is the Charles de Gaulle Statue, which
is a statue of the French President Charles de Gaulle who helped develop relations between his
country and Quebec. The government of Quebec is divided into what is called the Government and
Parliament. The Government represents the executive power and Parliament represents the legislative
power. It is a unicameral legislature. Parliament is made up of the National Assembly and the
Lieutenant Governor. The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the federal government of Canada and
acts as the Queen s representative in each of the provinces. The National Assembly is made up of 125
elected members representing the 25 electoral divisions. The Government is composed of elected
representatives of the party that holds the most seats in the National Assembly. The purpose of the
Government is to provide political management for Quebec. Most bills are drafted in the Government
and Parliament examines proposed bills. Quebec also has a Prime Minister designated by the
Lieutenant Governor. Because of the Canadian Shield, mining and oil and gas extraction are two of
the fastest growing industries. Many natural

Hiv And The Human Immunodeficiency Virus
HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is a lentivirus that results in AIDS (acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV attacks and destroys CD4 helper lymphocyte cells a specific type
of immune system cell. As a result, the body has a harder time fighting off other infections, making
minor illnesses more severe. The virus will go further to use those CD4 cells to create more of the
virus. Once so many CD4 cells have been destroyed, HIV will become AIDS.
This stage, the final stage, will make the recipient more vulnerable to infections and cancers. HIV
goes through multiple phases until reaching this point, however, the progression of each stage can be
prolonged with ART medication (antiretroviral therapy) or other forms of treatment, ... Show more

Initially, the virus was thought to be connected to homosexuals, and HIV even had multiple names
relating to the word gay . Though bisexual and homosexual men are the most affected, with further
research and additional information, researchers realized HIV was affecting other populations as well.
In September of 1982, the virus was finally named AIDS. In 1983, the HIV virus was isolated,
identified, and soon confirmed as the cause of AIDS.
Now, approximately 36.7 million people in the world are living with HIV, more than 1.2 million of
those people are in the United States. Many of the infected people are not even aware they have
contracted the virus. It is estimated that 80% of the infected experience flu like symptoms shortly after
contracting HIV, however, once those symptoms subside, they may not experience more symptoms for
several years.
Depending on the stage of the virus, different symptoms will occur. The first stage, the acute infection,
is the one in which flu like symptoms begin to occur. They will occur anywhere between two to six
weeks after infection and may last several weeks, or even months. This is caused by the increase of
HIV levels in the blood. CD4 cells begin to quickly decline during this stage, causing the immune
system to kick in, making the CD4 count rise once again, but not back to its original count. During the

The Importance Of Thrasymachus In Plato s Republic
The Importance of Thrasymachus in Plato s Republic
Dr. Malters s comments: This student does two things quite remarkable for an undergraduate student.
In his compact essay, not only does he display an in depth understanding of complex perspectives on
justice put forth by the protagonist Socrates, he deftly explains how Plato has artfully made rude
objections by a seemingly minor character early in the dialogue function as a structuring device for
nearly all the important ideas examined thereafter.
In Plato s Republic, the character Thrasymachus provides an intense yet short lived appearance in the
discussion of justice early in the story. Though he seems to almost completely withdraw from the
discussion for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though defeated on this point, he s not yet satisfied with Socrates argument, and sticks by one of his
previously stated views which held that injustice is more profitable than justice. However, he shrinks
back and seems no longer able to speak for himself after Socrates refuted his argument on justice.
Despite his withdrawal from the argument throughout the rest of the Republic, his early ideas help
lead Socrates farther on his search for justice through the construction of a hypothetical just city. In
describing the education of the guardians of this city, Socrates discusses the need for a balance
between gymnastics and poetry. He relates how too much gymnastics lead the spirited part of someone
to be overtightened and hard. He ll be museless and hate discussion explains Socrates. This hardness
and hate for discussion reminds us of the actions of Thrasymachus at the beginning of the argument
defining justice. Thrasymachus becomes an example of a badly tuned soul that Socrates goes on to
describe. On examining Thrasymachus idea that it pays to be perfectly unjust, Socrates refutes this
argument in Book 4 as he speaks of the souls three parts; wisdom, spirit, and desire. The civil war
between these three parts is shown to be the cause of injustice, but before Socrates can correlate this
with the regimes of certain

Texas Political Campaigns When running for any election in the U.S, it is a common belief that you
require spending a sizeable amount of money. Texas State is no different. A Texas Tribune analysis
established that there is no amount of campaign fund can guarantee an individual, victory (Jones 2). If
you are serious about campaigning for a federal office, you may need to part with ten to fifteen dollars
per vote. U.S rep in his re election bid spent a whopping thirty dollars per vote and fortunately for

stereotype of these interest groups. Furthermore, since I would join the Republicans, most Democrats
would most likely be against me. My campaign slogan would be Remember, you matter. Reason

Detroit Tops Forbes List Of The Most Dangerous Cities
Detroit tops Forbes list of the Most Dangerous Cities this year for the fifth year in a row. What is
encouraging is that the crime rate in the Motor City actually declined last year, despite devestating
financial woes that drove Detroit into the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Crime affects
the people of Detroit and the city s reputation, employment, income and education. It needs to be
contained and reduced to make Detroit prosper and make the lives of the people living there better.
Detroit had 316 murders in 2013, a rate of 45 per 100,000 people. That s the highest rate among cities
with populations over 100,000. In 2013 Detroit also reported 14,504 violent crimes. That s also the
highest per capita rate in the nation, according to the annual report. The total is comprised of rapes,
murder, robbery and aggravated assault.
The number of homicides peaked in 1974 at 714 and again in 1991 with 615. By the end of 2010, the
homicide count fell to 308 for the year with an estimated population of just over 900,000, the lowest
count and rate since 1967. However, taken in context by population, Detroit remains as a city with one
of the highest rates per capita for homicide in the United States. In April 2008, the city unveiled a
$300 million stimulus plan to create jobs and revitalize neighborhoods, financed by city bonds and
paid for by earmarking about 15% of the wagering tax. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Police Chief
Chester Logan announced at a press

Spongebob Gender Roles
Spongebob Squarepants and Bikini Bottom: A Challenge to Gender Roles in the Modern Era Ooh who
lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Squarepants! Oh, the anthem of childhood rings out
over big screens across the world. The show is notorious for its lightheartedness, humour, fantastical
realism, and innocence. It is a staple of my childhood, but underneath Spongebob s goofy yellow
exterior and Bikini s Bottom s notorious burger joint (The Krusty Krab) lies a social misconstrued
perception of the roles that male and female characters display in our society. Think about the
characteristic and behaviour of Spongebob. He lives under a pineapple, his best buddy is an ebullient

In the episode Rock a bye Bi valve , Spongebob and Patrick discover a baby clam out in the
wilderness alone without any parents and they decide to raise it as their own. Purely for comic relief,
the show depicts Spongebob and Patrick taking on the parental roles: Patrick as the dad and
Spongebob as the mom. This seems harmless in the beginning, but later in the episode begins to turn
into very common stereotypes. Patrick goes off to work, leaving Spongebob to take care of the clam,
clean the house, and cook dinner. Every night he returns from work exhausted and cannot help take
care of this clam that he equally agreed to raise. Think about the message it is showing young boys.
For boys, if they grow up and get a job that they work hard at they do not have to help around the
house. They can go off to work and come home late at night, hold there kid for a bit, and then just sit
down. Leaving the woman (Spongebob in this case) to do all the housework, stay at home, and
provide all the nurturing. In A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen, this is the behavior that made the main
character, Nora, become so annoyed that she decided to abandon her family and find go off in the
world to find herself. In my honest viewpoint, the Spongebob scene had nothing wrong with it. For
thousands of years a man s role is to go off to work and provide for his family. This is engraved into

It requires to be treated immediately because when bone tumor grows, it presses on healthy bone

cancer will experience burning pain at the early stage and as the tumor develops, the pain become
more persistent. Beside that, the bone can easily break due to the cancerous cells can weaken the bone.

Nuclear Power Is The Best Efficient Power Production Method
Introduction:
Over the years there has been controversy over whether nuclear power is the most efficient power
production method in the world for the future. As global warming is increasing, the amount of carbon
dioxide emitted into the air is also increasing, and a global concern is arising about whether the
current power production methods using fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are long term, as these
power production methods are seen as temporary because these recourses are becoming abundant. The
most widely thought concern of the population is how long the systems we are currently are going to
last before the fuel for power runs out. There have been successful attempts to use ecological systems
such as hydropower, wind energy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, there are ethnic concerns about the production of atomic bombs, as these are a form of
fission but are an uncontrolled chain reaction unlike the controlled chain reaction of fission that
provides energy in nuclear reactors.
Nuclear energy allows one to produce energy without increasing the atmospheric carbon dioxide or
other greenhouse gases and does not stimulate global warming. There are two ways that this can be
achieved, either through nuclear fission or through nuclear fusion. Fission is known as the splitting of
large nuclei such as Uranium 235, resulting in a loss of mass and hence a release in energy in the form
of heat. This energy is used to produce steam, making a turbine spin, and then providing the power for
electricity to be produced. It is currently one of the strongest substitutes for power production methods
using fossil fuels as nuclear fuels could potentially last for about 2000 years.
Nuclear fusion, or the fusing together of light nuclei to form larger ones can create another form of
nuclear energy. Essentially, it is the exact reaction that occurs in the sun, as the sun s heat is created by
the bombardment of hydrogen atoms creating helium and a neutron during which energy is

Societal Norms In Boys And Girls By Alice Munro
In today s world there are many ideologies that women are set to follow but that are also easy to break
through. As society progresses, people have to adjust to new societal norms. The story, Boys and Girls
by Alice Munro is about an 11 year old girl who lives in a fox breeding farm, alongside her parents
and siblings. The whole point of breeding the foxes is to be able to kill them and later skin them but
the horses they own are killed in order to feed and bulk up the foxes. This is an everyday routine for
the little girl, who takes pride in helping out her father with outdoor chores. She takes it as a
compliment and blushes when her father introduces her as his hired man since it is something she
prefers doing over house work. She dreads ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story, Boys and Girls states As soon as I was done I ran out of, trying to get out of earshot before
my mother thought of what she wanted me to do next (Munro 156). It shows a wide example of how
gender roles are strictly implied in this household and how the little girl tries to avoid it as much as
possible. The story follows between the lines between a woman being fragile and catering to men, and
men not breaking and providing for the family. The feminist theory widely connects to the story
because it gives an insight of the issue of the typical gender roles and what big of an impact it makes
when they are not followed. According to the article Gender Inequality in the Home, by authors Janell
Fetterolf and Lauren Rudman Despite women s increased presence and status in the workforce, there
is still a disparity in domestic labor that disadvantages women (Fetterolf 220). It proves a critical point
that women will always be set to gender role standards that they are expected to follow. The 11 year
old girl struggles with wanting to be out with her father but still having to take responsibility for the
tasks that are imposed and meant for her. According to the story, the girl s father introduced her as his,
new hired man. I turned away and raked furiously, red in the face with pleasure (Munro 155). It seems
as though she takes much pride in being seen as masculine figure, rather than being portrayed in the
norm of a fragile good girl who is supposed to be at home doing housework. In the article, Feminism
as Critique in a Neoliberal Age it states, This imputed gender subtext proved to be increasingly
counterfactual with only a very small proportion of the population conforming to a normative dualistic
model of separate masculine and feminine

A sugar solution and an empty hole in the agar were used as controls.
From the results, it is clear that all of the honeys had a large antimicrobial effect on the culture of
E.coli, much more so than the other cultures of bacteria. Their effects on Straphylococcus aureus
should also be noted. It is obvious that the clear honey had a negligible antimicrobial effect on all
bacterium tested, excepting the E.coli colony. This was to be expected; however, as clear honey lacks
the enzymes to create the non peroxide antimicrobial effects, caused by methylglyoxal, which is
present in manuka honey. Therefore as the varying types of honey were most effective on the E.coli
culture, it was selected for the main experiment.
Furthermore, during this preliminary testing I experimented with the varying colour filters in the
colourimeter, in order to establish which led to the most reliable and measurable results. The results of
this experiment was that the blue filter resulted in larger results, meaning that it allowed an
appropriate amount of light to reach the honey. Therefore the blue filter will be used in the main
experiments, as opposed to the red, green and orange filters.

Otto Hahn
Intro Otto Hahn was the man of the times. He was associated with the greatest minds of the Twentieth
century and founded many scientific principles of the Twenty first. His work in mid war Germany
shaped the path of not only his own, but many nations. This is the investigation pertaining to the life
and works of Otto Hahn.
Childhood and Education Otto grew up as the son of a middle class Glazier (Glass fitter) and attended
the Goethe Gymnasium where he took an interest in classics. He grew up as many boys, collecting
stamps and the like, but even at an early age he was finishing in the tops of all his classes. He

Hahn not only discovered nuclear fission but also discovered many new isotopes, namely,
radiothorium (thorium 228), polonium 212, lead 210, and thorium 227. More terrifyingly for Hahn, he
concocted poison gases in World War One, some of his own creation and some merely by following
orders. In fact most shockingly, Hahn was never quite looking for nuclear fission. He enjoyed
researching and discovering new radioactive isotopes and it was because of this that he stumbled upon
nuclear fission. When Hahn discovered nuclear fission he had been working near to it for many a year
with Lisa Meitner. Meitner and Hahn worked for years in Germany together and remained friends
throughout their lives. In Germany they discovered isotopes together by bombarding certain particles
with neutrons and observing how they reacted. When Meitner and Hahn researched nuclear fission,
Hahn discovered particle induced fission. Otto did this by conducting an experiment in which they
fired neutrons at Uranium 235 and observed its byproducts. From this experiment they discovered that
Kr 92 and Ba 141 were produced along with extremely large amounts of energy and gamma radiation.
At first Otto could not believe the results of his experiment, for it was so contrary to all he had
believed. But after he had repeated it and confirmed the results with Meitner he knew

Heterosexuality And Homosexuality
I m gay. The words that can ruin a relationship or better one, but as much as you hope for the positive

my sexuality until I was around twelve, and I was dating a girl for two years whom I became close to,

The Blues Eyes Analysis
The Blues Eyes is a story of a black girl named Pecola who dreams of having the ideal family
portrayed in the story of Dick and Jane the white American family: She comes to realize that this life
she dreams of is unattainable since she is black in a white society. She is enamored with Shirley
Temple, a beautiful blue eyed white girl. Pecola feels that if she has blue eyes she would be beautiful
and endearing to others. Morrison s novel describes how Pecola and her family strive to live up to the
white standards that are imposed on them by a white society but find this goal to be unattainable.
Pecola is made to feel that her blackness is ugly and not valued, only to have her feeling validated by
others. Despite what she experiences, Pecola never gives up on her dream of beautiful blue eyes, only
leading her into despair. The story begins with the description of Pecola s family: they live in a

Pathetic Fallacy In The Red Pony
The fourth theme of nature is that the natural events imply profound messages. In The Red Pony, it is
described by the pathetic fallacy. This literary term refers to the presentation of inanimate objects in
nature as possessing human feelings. Steinbeck especially uses the weather to foreshadow upcoming
events and to symbolize the mood and emotion of the characters. For example, rain is one of the
causes of death in this story. In The Gift, Jody wishes that it does not rain before Thanksgiving. Jody s
father has told Jody that he can ride the pony on the day of Thanksgiving, because it will be all grown
up by then. Jody tries to act on his father s words, so he does not put his legs on the horse s back,
waiting for the day of getting upon Gabilan. However, the brown earth turns dark and the trees
glistens (21). Unfortunately, the week of rain beats up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of The Leader of the People, Billy gathers the last of the year s hay. Then, Jody tells
him that he is going to kill the mice with his grandfather that day (90). Jody takes a broom and begins
the mouse hunt. When Jody sees the dead mice, he sighs with satisfaction (77). He describes that the
plump, sleek, arrogant mice are doomed (77). Jody sees his obligation to kill the mice because they do
not have any reason of being alive. Thus, he continues the process of slaughter; however, Billy stops
him and tells him to come back home. Jody goes back to his house and tells Billy that the mice do not
know the near future of their life (77). Then, Billy responds philosophically No, nor you either...nor
me, nor anyone (91), meaning that nobody on earth can see the future. From Billy and Jody s
conversation, Steinbeck suggests that living things cannot control what is going to happen; instead, the
future controls them. Namely, nature rules over everything, and human beings do not have any power

The Importance Of Economic Inequality In Indonesia
In the past thirty years, globalization and market openness lead world to a better stage of wealth,
however, it is inevitable that without government intervention this prosperity is concentrated in the
hands of the small elite. The uneven of wealth distribution or the gap between the rich and the poor
called economic inequality. This essay will argue that the government of Indonesia needs to introduce
some policies to reduce economic inequality because economic inequality has no benefit at all,
Indonesia is a democratic country which aims to improve public welfare, and Indonesia, with the rest
of the world, wants to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Economic inequality is commonly translated as income inequality. Based on OECD Factbook (2011),
income inequality is measured as household disposable income in a particular year, consists of
earnings, self employment and capital income and public cash transfers then deduct income taxes and
social security contributions paid by households. The income of the household is attributed to each of
its members, with an adjustment to reflect differences in needs for households of different sizes (p.
80). Moreover, economic inequality is measured by Gini coefficient, which is based on the
comparison of cumulative proportions of the population against cumulative proportions of income
they receive, and it ranges between 0 in the case of perfect equality and 1 in the case of perfect
inequality. According to Indonesia s Statistics

Reflection On The Continuous Process Improvement And LEAN
The second guest speaker that talked to our class was Andrew Peacock. He talked to us about the
Continuous Process Improvement and LEAN. Andre Peacock is a Senior Process Engineer at OPPD
and works in a group called Operations Analysis. He mentioned that LEAN focuses on bottom to top,
instead of the usual top to bottom in an organization. I will talk about his presentation and about the
simulation that we ended with. Andrew Peacock started out by telling us what LEAN is and isn t. The
first time I heard LEAN I did think it stood for something, but Andrew reassured us that it is not an
acronym nor does it have anything to do with working out to get lean. Because that is what you will
get if you type it into Google. But what he did tell us is that LEAN is a process of evaluating and
doing whatever it takes to improve. This process helps clear up waste from an organization, like
making sure that customers don t stay on the phone too long without talking to someone, or spending
unnecessary time looking for something in an office because it was not put in the right place. Just like
our first guest speaker, Dave Klug, Andrew mentioned that LEAN does not happen without culture.
LEAN was originally adopted with Toyota, and with its founder Henry Ford. When LEAN first started
its results were things such as safe working conditions, higher customer value, and reduced frustration.
Now LEAN has turned into much more than just improving those three things in a company. LEAN

Again, time only gives us one chance and we must use this chance wisely. We again should use this
opportunity to cultivate an open mind. We should be flexible, adaptive and open to new experiences
and find alternate ways of looking at things.
If we choose to approach life in the same way day after day, as well as becoming bored and
uninspired, we will reduce our intellectual aptitude. If, on the other hand, we seek new ways of doing
and looking at things, we will expand our intellectual capability, find life way more exciting and
broaden our experiences. By opening our mind to new experiences and opportunities we strengthen
the belief in ourselves and it helps us live a happy and satisfying life. Time is precious, do not let it

All the memories and knowledge we ve gained throughout life is our own artwork, crafted by our very

How Did The Parthenon Contribute To The Pantheon
The Parthenon in Athens and the Pantheon in Rome have both made significant contributions in
architecture throughout the years from when they were built. They have also been important in helping
us understand the cultures of the Greeks and Romans during the times the two buildings were
constructed.
Right from its name it is fairly obvious that the Parthenon was built as a dedication to Athena, the
patron deity of Athens. The name Parthenon derives from one of Athena s epithets: Athena Parthenos.
Parthenon therefore means house of Parthenos . From the 4th century BCE, the whole building
acquired the name Parthenon. (M. Cartwright, 2012) The Parthenon was both a temple and a treasury.
These two functions tremendously influenced its design. There is evidence that the temple was built to
measure in order to accommodate the chryselephantine statue of Athena by Pheidius. (M. Cartwright,
2012) The Greeks had a very extensive mythology which they took very seriously. Due to this,
building of the Parthenon was a form of gratitude to Athena for helping them win the war.
Features of the Parthenon are from both the Doric and Ionic orders. The Parthenon s aesthetic appeal
emanates from the refinement of many established norms of Greek architecture and ... Show more

of the Romans engineering skills. When the Pantheon was made a church of the virgin Holy Mary and

The first thing that must be noted about Breakaway is its non profit and religious worldview. Goals for
Breakaway will be much different than that of a corporation of for profit organizations. Their
communication style will be different. As Chung Ming, McDaniel, and Busenitz insist, religious
organizations in particular have a chief goal; and that is church growth. They define growth in terms
of attendance and spiritual growth, measured with Likert scales. Olsen portrays the goals of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints as three responsibilities: to increase positive worldwide
public awareness of the church; to help people better understand the church, its members, and beliefs;

The Impact Of Western Imperialism In East Asia
Jun Woo Kang
Mr. Tirkey
IB MYP World History
April 29th, 2016
The western imperialism in East Asia begins with European interactions into what was at the moment
called East Indies. This began during the 15th century in search of trade routes leading to the Age of
Exploration of the European empires which were in the flourishing cultural and intellectual
developments with Renaissance. By the early 16th century, European merchants greatly expanded
Western European influence and established numerous trade posts with the countries in Asia,
benefiting the European countries economically. This trend originated from the Portuguese breaking
the monopoly of the Arabs and Italians of trade between Asia and Europe by the discovery of sea route
between the two continents. As a direct result, Western empires introduced their different ideologies to
the East such as their Christian beliefs, and their new weaponries. Before the Industrial Revolution in
the end of 19th century, demand for oriental goods such as spices, silk and tea remained the driving
force behind European imperialism, and the European dominance in East Asia endured with already
established trading posts between the two continents. However, industrialization dramatically ... Show

middle of the store, he is blocking everyone else who is trying to shop. Furthermore, when

A Lesson Before Dying Literary Analysis
In past years, as well as, in the twenty first century, African Americans are being oppressed and judged
based on the color of their skin. In, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, this is the primary
conflict that plagues Jefferson s as well as Grant s everyday life. By pleading guilty to a murder that
he did not commit, Jefferson has to choose to die just as he is, a hog in the white s eyes, or die a man.
On the other hand, Grant, who is his teacher, is faced with being looked down upon by his community
all because of his race and status. He is graced with the challenge of turning Jefferson into a man
before his execution date. It is only a matter of time before they both realize that they cannot change

what the white folks around here tell me to teach reading, writing, and rithmetic. They never told me
how to keep a black boy out of a liquor store (Gaines 13). Seen from this line, Grant does not want to
help Jefferson, he thinks that Jefferson is not his problem and that it s not his fault that Jefferson is
going to be executed. This accurately depicts Grant s selfishness, while in the end only helping him to
please his aunt and Jefferson s godmother. This is a turning point in Grant s development as a
character. This marks the point where he learns to accept and no longer wants to fear. And when he
finally decides to take a chance, and not be afraid of the outcome. Grant has a swift change in thinking
as the novel progresses. Seeing things differently and looking deeper into the little things in his life.
They sentence you to death because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time, with no proof that
you had anything at all to do with the crime other than being there when it happened (Gaines 158).
Based on this line, there is an obvious change in Grants perception. He is understanding that the
sooner he realizes what has been laid out to him, the better off he will be. That there is no point in
holding on to the past because there is ultimately nothing he can do to change what has been done. As

This is what happens when Adaku and Nnu Ego decide to form an alliance and stage a cooking strike.
The strike rarely affects Nnaife because his co workers are generous enough to share their food with

means of survival that enables them to take care of their personal needs and those of their children.
Some of the commercial activities that women undertake include selling various goods such as

Atrial Fibrillation with No Structural Heart Disease...

Approximately 10% to 30% of patients with atrial flibrillation (AF) do not present structural heart

in daily practice that occurs under diverse situations and its treatment should be based on the different
scenarios of presentation. Severe population based studies have found that AF is associated with
greater morbidity and mortality and worse quality of life. It is the leading cause of arrhythmia related

5) Only 12% of AFFIRM patients did not have structural heart disease, constituting a small group that
should have undergone long term follow up to demonstrate the presence of differences.
The low mortality rate observed in patients without heart disease, even in the absence of an effective
therapy, makes it difficult to demonstrate any variation in the prognosis. The basic objective in these
patients is to improve symptoms and quality of life, to avoid the adverse effects of antiarrhythmic
agents and to cure the arrhythmia in order to prevent the development of atrial dilation, need for
anticoagulant therapy and increased risk. In population based studies, as the Framingham study, the
presence of AF increased long term mortality 1.5 to 1.9 times.
WHAT ABOUT THE RISK OF EMBOLISM?
The risk of embolism is one of the major problems in patients with AF. The annual risk of stroke in
patients with a CHADS score = 0 is low, 0.36%; yet, the risk or stroke exists. Interestingly, patients
with persistent or chronic lone AF have a risk of embolism of 1.3% per year, and this percentage may
be low but not absent, especially if we bare in mind the cumulative risk. (4) Although this controversy
deals with patients without structural heart disease, patients with AF frequently have hypertension, a
condition that increases the risk of embolism (CHADS 1). Oral anticoagulant agents or aspirin

People shouldn t be determined by the way they look. Not being white doesn t mean you can t make

many people feel that race doesn t portray who you are.
This trend only offends those who minorities. It only reduces social problems because it allows people
to disrespect others by basically calling them out of their names. To make things better everyone has
to be on the same page as far as communication goes. Categorizing one another as the same regardless
of the color of our skin will reduce more than Minority Majority by creating a movement towards

The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein kept my interest so much that I could not put it down

seeking to obtain it no matter what the cost or how much human life it would take to attain. Alliances
are formed in a amalgamation of shared hatred for equal enemies and desire for power , Europe is
abound with chaos. European borders seem to be ever changing like that of a snaking river. Austria
Hungary is full of minorities each vying for its own independence and country. Germany and France
have an undying enmity for one another. Russia also hated by the Germans is seeking to protect its
interests in the Balkans, while creating alliances with France and England. The continent is as a
sleeping volcano waiting to erupt in a violent cataclysm of war and destruction with its epicenter
between Serbia and Austria hungry, pulling each of its respected allies into the First world war. It
seems every country has some disposition towards another country over disputes not its own but of its
allies. The great powers of Europe came to War after The Archdukes assassination in response to each
of its respected allies becoming engulfed in a conflict between the Serbian people and Austrian hungry
nation. With both sides drawings in their alliances made prior to the war initial beginning like a
domino effect, reigniting flames on animosity. Germany declaring war on Russia soon after, siding

Hospital Management Information Management System
Objective At present the health care system of Bangladesh faces major challenges. We are unable to
provide even primary medical care to our people let alone secondary and tertiary medical care. The
current scenario of information flow in most of the hospital in Bangladesh presents a paper based,
time consuming, inefficient system leading to problems of inefficient utilization of resources and
problems to patients. All these problems and poor coordination are closely connected to our failure to
use health information technology as an integral part of medical care. Not only that we face
difficulties in retaining specialists in non urban areas. The distribution of specialists in Bangladesh is
indeed lopsided. With these problems in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3. Existing Scenario in Most of the Hospitals in Bangladesh Providing medical care to citizens is the
constitutional obligation of the government of Bangladesh. The constitution of Bangladesh mandates
that, It shall be a fundamental responsibility of the state to attain, through planned economic growth, a
constant increase of productive forces and a steady increase in the material and cultural standard of
living of the people, with a view to securing to its citizens (a) the provision of basic necessities of life,
including food, clothing, shelter, education and medical care. [1] But the present situation is far away
form what is written in the constitution. Bangladesh, a least developed country, with an infant
mortality rate of 6.5 per cent, 75 per cent child birth without trained attendant, 90 per cent children
with some malnutrition, prevalence of hypertension among 12 per cent of its population has posed a
major challenge to arrange efficient medical treatment for them at affordable cost. There is only one
hospital bed for 3151 people, one doctor for 4572 and one nurse for 8460 which is one of the lowest
ratios in the world. Per capita government expenditure is only 26 dollars whereas a country like
Maldives spends 220 dollars per citizen a year. [1] Current situation in most of the hospitals with
respect to access to health care is far from satisfactory. It is often assumed that the

Why Choose The Caribbean
The Caribbean doesn t seem so impressive when you look at a map of the location. It s just a bunch of
little specks surrounded by tons of ocean water. Names like Caicos Island, Turks, and Nevis... Saint
Kitts, Anguilla and Montserrat aren t exactly household names. But, just because the names aren t all
too familiar, it doesn t change the fact that the Caribbean is a very popular vacation destination. The
little specks on the map are actually island paradises. There are over seven thousand islets, reefs,
islands and caves in the Caribbean just begging to be explored; so many of them are nearly
unpopulated and absolutely gorgeous. In choosing your Caribbean vacation, the largest challenge you
are apt to face is exactly where to go. All nations in the Caribbean have beautiful weather. Most of the
islands feature lovely beaches. The warm, beautiful, crystal waters are immensely enjoyable and just
as with any other island nation, the locals will welcome you with warm smiles and open arms. Picking
the destination is indeed the toughest challenge. Here are some great resources that will help you do
the necessary research to choose the best locale for your holiday. ... Show more content on

You should find out which destinations are frequented by the most visitors as those will be the
cheapest airports for your arrival. Don t be afraid to comparison shop, but do start way in advance to
give you time do the necessary work. This is especially true if you plan to take a trip to the Caribbean
over the Christmas holiday season. If you procrastinate too long in booking your flights you just might
find that the price tags for those tickets just keep going up and up as the Christmas holiday draws

Public Domain Research Paper
The topic of public domain is becoming increasingly important in the modern day. Legislation once
enacted to protect the intellectual property of the individual seems to have been flipped on its head to
do the exact opposite. Copyright was originally created to inspire original works by individual
authors, inventors and scientists for a relatively finite amount of time. In the modern era, we see big
corporate interests pushing for the extension of these deadlines while buying and hoarding copyrights,
using lawyers as guard dogs. Doing so infringes on the consumer s right to choose. Such actions
prevents fair competition in terms of price, quality, and service for an obscene amount of time. Many
famous icons all the way from Uncle Sam to Santa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believe that if they came up with the idea then they should be the one benefiting from any
money it brings in. They would prefer to have longer term limits until something goes into the public
domain. The public believes that after a certain number of years the product should become available
to the public. The public also does not agree with Congress increasing the term limits, it is making
things not available to the public until a long time. Some corporations, like Disney, spend large
amounts of money lobbying for Congress to increase the time until something is available to the
public. They do this because they make a large amount of money off of Mickey Mouse and they want
to continue to make a large amount of money from their creation. Not only do Disney and other anti
public domain businesses spend a lot of money introducing and passing bills to extend their
copyrights, but they also have a large influence on the government due to their position as business
leaders. If the congress were to veto their legislation, these powerful companies may decide not to
contribute to certain government

Why Is Tupac Controversial
The Controversial Life of Tupac Shakur
Despite his reputation as a criminal and a thug, Tupac Shakur effectively spread his message of the
unfairness in society through his storytelling, music, and public stance to increase awareness of
discrimination against African Americans.
Tupac Amaru Shakur came into the world on June 16, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York. While poverty
stricken,Tupac faced many obstacles as a child and an adolescent. All his life, Shakur used issues in
his family as an underlying conflict and expressed these issues while growing up. Tupac was very
interested in acting, so he enrolled in the Baltimore School of the Arts. Those close to him say, Tupac
showed a flair for performing. During Shakur s free time, he survived as ... Show more content on

Shakur also had been sentenced to eighteen months to four and a half years for sexual abuse charges.
After running into trouble with the law and doing time, Tupac stated that his time in jail left a lasting
impression. One associate with Newsweek said, He seemed to understand how sacred life was. With
this so called epiphany occurring in Tupac s life, some might think this could be a turning point.
Others disagreed saying, He said he wanted to get away from the violence and live a calmer life. But
those were only words. The people who disagreed had a strong point. As powerful and moving as
some of the things Tupac said were, they would need to be proved by his actions. The violence dialed
down a bit, but Tupac returned back to his old ways. He got bailed out of prison for $1 million by the
owner of Death Row Records, Marion Suge Knight. Shakur joined Death Row Records and got along
with Knight. Marion Knight even helped Tupac buy his mother a house. This shows Knight wanted
Tupac making music for his company. He even played another role in the movie B ullet. Then, Tupac
released the CD M e Against the World, w hich took his popularity to another level. It sold 500,000
copies upon its release. Dear Mama , a tribute to his mother on the CD, went made its way onto the
Top Ten. Tupac regained his place back on top after being released from prison, but did he ever leave

Changing Attitudes During World War I
I Think during the war the attitude towards the two didn t change much. However later in the years,
there attitudes changed for one another. This seems to be an issue with many groups. The childhood
friends and acquaintances, and his father s non Jewish contacts changed as time went on too. Many
people s actions towards other changed during the war times. A thing that got me in Toivi Blatt was
the deportation of people who were younger than 15 and older than 55. I couldn t fathom the thought
of losing my parents if I was 8 years old or the thought of my parents sending me off to an unknown
place. Wondering if we would ever be reunited. Before the war, there was a big push on getting the
kids out of the country and at this time. It would be

Symbolism In The Movie Angel
There is no future, there is no past. I live this moment as my last. Rent first a revolutionary Broadway
musical turned into a movie, broke down the barriers by being one of the first musical productions to
reveal the truths of the real American lifestyle. Visionaries like musical director Jonathan Larson and
film director Chris Columbus, helped use the movie and musical platform to share the stories of
hundreds of people facing adversity in the early 90 s. The movie follows six Bohemians (Mark a
hopeful movie producer, Roger a musician, Mimi a night club dancer, Collins a teacher, Maureen an
activist, Joann a lawyer, and Angel a trans street drummer) and their journeys with drug abuse, AIDS
and HIV, homosexuality, and the struggle to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the most prominent symbols I noticed, is actually a character: Angel. Angel is characterized as
a transwoman, bohemian, street drummer. In the movie Angel and Collins are in a committed
relationship, and together go to AIDS support groups, where they connect with other people suffering
from the tragic disease. From the beginning of the movie it is known that Angel has contracted AIDS,
which sadly enough eventually takes her life. Angel is aware she is dying and instead of focusing on
monetary items, focuses on making the most of the relationships she s built with the other characters.
Because of this she encourages the other characters to look past their differences and live everyday to
it s fullest. One ironic thing to notice is that Angel actually becomes an angel and by the end of the
movie is the constant reminder for the other characters to not live with hatred and resentment but love
everyone equally. Angel is a symbol of equality and not labeling a person by their sexual orientation,
social status, ethnic background, but by the quality of their inner character throughout the movie Rent.
Another symbol in the movie is Mark, the narrator of the story and documentary filmmaker. Oddly
enough Mark is one of the only characters who doesn t have HIV/AIDS or a past of drugs , but he is
the one telling their stories. I think the director does this to help the audience understand that just
because something doesn t affect you directly doesn t mean that it isn t happening and it is not
important. Rent was set in the early 90 s and at the point there were thought to be with 8 10 million
people worldwide that had AIDS/HIV, but the topic of human immunodeficiency virus and acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome were not openly discussed by many. By making the main character of
the broadway musical and the movie unaffected by the disease, the directors made it possible

Accounting, Personal Finance and Personal Finance Software
a) Accounting is the social science that studies, measures, analyzes and records the heritage of
organizations, businesses and individuals, in order to serve in decision making and control, presenting
the information previously recorded, systematically and useful for different stakeholders. It also has a
technique that produces structured and systematic quantitative and valuable information, expressed in
monetary units on transactions made by economic entities and certain identifiable and quantifiable
economic events that affect it, for the purpose of providing it to the various public stakeholders. The
purpose of accounting is to provide information at a given moment and the results obtained over a
period of time, which is useful to users in making their decisions, both to control the past
administrative events, and tor estimate future results, providing such rational and efficient decisions
Accounting is very important as all companies as well as individuals must keep track of their business
and financial affairs, so to get higher profits. In addition, accounting is necessary to obtain legal
information. We could say that, at a personal level, accounting is the financial tool that helps us go
throughout our financial plan, showing us where we are financially at each period of time, and
advising us in order to make the best economic and financial decisions. b) Personal finance planning is
not easy, and the big picture, in fact, can be complicated to understand. There are

U.s. Should Adopt A Free International Trade Policy
The question of whether the U.S. should adopt a free international trade policy is a hotly debated one.
Currently, the U.S. has a relatively open trade policy and enjoys free trade with twenty countries1 and
more are being added to this list through new agreements. But does it benefit from free trade?
Evidence, which I will present in this paper, show that the benefits of free trade highly outweigh the
little and often misinterpreted disadvantages. In light of this, the U.S. should adopt a free trade policy
and look forward to new trade agreements. When evaluating the benefits of free trade, the first
economic concept we must look at is comparative advantage: the comparative benefit one nation has
over another in the production of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
consumers would face inflated prices in a market devoid of international competition. However,
cheaper goods are not the only advantage of free trade. Trade involves exports too, and as 95% of the
consumers in the world are outside of the U.S., free trade opens a portal for the U.S. producers to sell
their goods to a larger pool of consumers who potentially value the goods more than the U.S.
consumers.5 According to Daniella Markheim and Anthony Kim of The Heritage Institute, without
free trade, the U.S. manufacturers would be limited to selling to a lower number of consumers inside
the U.S. and this would mean less firms producing, fewer jobs, and even lower wages. They say
Today, the $12 trillion U.S. economy is bolstered by free trade, a pillar of America s vitality. American
exports support one in five U.S. manufacturing jobs. Jobs directly linked to the export of goods pay 13
to 18 percent more than other U.S. jobs. 6 Further, United States Trade Representative estimates that
the U.S. exports supported 11.3 million jobs in 2013. This clearly demonstrates how exports through
free trade is beneficial to the U.S. economy. Evidence also shows that free trade stimulates a chain of
growth in the economy because as economy becomes better as an effect of free trade, spending in the
market increases, increasing demand. This results

Poem Analysis Of Tribal Land By Dale Backo
Tribal Land In the poem, Tribal Land by Dale Backo, there are many great verses that would make
great animated scenes. So, I planned to make it into a short animated film and justified why I chose
these effects, colours, styles and sounds. The poem is very descriptive and interesting so it would
make the most sense to animate this rather than to convert this to something as limited as a
PowerPoint. In scene one there is an elderly aboriginal man shown looking through the window and
the poem starts to be read out in the voice of the shown elderly man. In the background, you can hear
birds and animal sound effects to emphasise how beautiful the outside looks. In scene two the screen
fades, then it is split in two and shows a before and after

It has a predominantly French speaking population and is the only province to have an official provincial language of French. The capital or Quebec is Quebec City. The population of Quebec is 8.081 million. Quebec has three natural regions: the Canadian Shield, the St. Lawrence Lowlands, and the Appalachians. The Canadian Shield is also called the Precambrian Shield or the Laurentian Plateau. It is a big block of ancient crystalline rock. There is an abundance of glacial debris and exposed rock. The government of Quebec is divided into what is called the Government and Parliament. The Government represents the executive power and Parliament represents the legislative power. It is a unicameral legislature. Parliament is made up of the National Assembly and the Lieutenant Governor. The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the federal government of Canada and acts as the Queen s representative in each of the provinces. The National Assembly is made up of 125 elected members representing the 25 electoral divisions. The Government is composed of elected representatives of the party that holds the most seats in the National Assembly. The purpose of the Government is to provide political management for Quebec. • 3. Hiv And The Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is a lentivirus that results in AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV attacks and destroys CD4 helper lymphocyte cells a specific type of immune system cell. As a result, the body has a harder time fighting off other infections, making minor illnesses more severe. The virus will go further to use those CD4 cells to create more of the virus. Once so many CD4 cells have been destroyed, HIV will become AIDS. This stage, the final stage, will make the recipient more vulnerable to infections and cancers. HIV goes through multiple phases until reaching this point, however, the progression of each stage can be prolonged with ART medication (antiretroviral therapy) or other forms of treatment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Initially, the virus was thought to be connected to homosexuals, and HIV even had multiple names relating to the word gay . Though bisexual and homosexual men are the most affected, with further research and additional information, researchers realized HIV was affecting other populations as well. In September of 1982, the virus was finally named AIDS. In 1983, the HIV virus was isolated, identified, and soon confirmed as the cause of AIDS. Now, approximately 36.7 million people in the world are living with HIV, more than 1.2 million of those people are in the United States. Many of the infected people are not even aware they have contracted the virus. It is estimated that 80% of the infected experience flu like symptoms shortly after contracting HIV, however, once those symptoms subside, they may not experience more symptoms for several years. Depending on the stage of the virus, different symptoms will occur. The first stage, the acute infection, is the one in which flu like symptoms begin to occur. They will occur anywhere between two to six weeks after infection and may last several weeks, or even months. This is caused by the increase of HIV levels in the blood. CD4 cells begin to quickly decline during this stage, causing the immune system to kick in, making the CD4 count rise once again, but not back to its original count. During the ... The Importance Of Thrasymachus In Plato s Republic The Importance of Thrasymachus in Plato s Republic Dr. Malters s comments: This student does two things quite remarkable for an undergraduate student. In his compact essay, not only does he display an in depth understanding of complex perspectives on justice put forth by the protagonist Socrates, he deftly explains how Plato has artfully made rude objections by a seemingly minor character early in the dialogue function as a structuring device for nearly all the important ideas examined thereafter. In Plato s Republic, the character Thrasymachus provides an intense yet short lived appearance in the discussion of justice early in the story. Though defeated on this point, he s not yet satisfied with Socrates argument, and sticks by one of his previously stated views which held that injustice is more profitable than justice. However, he shrinks back and seems no longer able to speak for himself after Socrates refuted his argument on justice. Despite his withdrawal from the argument throughout the rest of the Republic, his early ideas help lead Socrates farther on his search for justice through the construction of a hypothetical just city. In describing the education of the guardians of this city, Socrates discusses the need for a balance between gymnastics and poetry. He relates how too much gymnastics lead the spirited part of someone to be overtightened and hard. He ll be museless and hate discussion explains Socrates. This hardness and hate for discussion reminds us of the actions of Thrasymachus at the beginning of the argument defining justice. Thrasymachus becomes an example of a badly tuned soul that Socrates goes on to describe. On examining Thrasymachus idea that it pays to be perfectly unjust, Socrates refutes this argument in Book 4 as he speaks of the souls three parts; wisdom, spirit, and desire. The civil war between these three parts is shown to be the cause of injustice, but before Socrates can correlate this with the regimes of certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Detroit Tops Forbes List Of The Most Dangerous Cities Detroit tops Forbes list of the Most Dangerous Cities this year for the fifth year in a row. What is encouraging is that the crime rate in the Motor City actually declined last year, despite devestating financial woes that drove Detroit into the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Crime affects the people of Detroit and the city s reputation, employment, income and education. It needs to be contained and reduced to make Detroit prosper and make the lives of the people living there better. Detroit had 316 murders in 2013, a rate of 45 per 100,000 people. That s the highest rate among cities with populations over 100,000. In 2013 Detroit also reported 14,504 violent crimes. That s also the highest per capita rate in the nation, according to the annual report. The total is comprised of rapes, murder, robbery and aggravated assault. The number of homicides peaked in 1974 at 714 and again in 1991 with 615. By the end of 2010, the homicide count fell to 308 for the year with an estimated population of just over 900,000, the lowest count and rate since 1967. However, taken in context by population, Detroit remains as a city with one of the highest rates per capita for homicide in the United States. In April 2008, the city unveiled a $300 million stimulus plan to create jobs and revitalize neighborhoods, financed by city bonds and paid for by earmarking about 15% of the wagering tax. Oh, the anthem of childhood rings out over big screens across the world. The show is notorious for its lightheartedness, humour, fantastical realism, and innocence. It is a staple of my childhood, but underneath Spongebob s goofy yellow exterior and Bikini s Bottom s notorious burger joint (The Krusty Krab) lies a social misconstrued perception of the roles that male and female characters display in our society. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the episode Rock a bye Bi valve , Spongebob and Patrick discover a baby clam out in the wilderness alone without any parents and they decide to raise it as their own. Purely for comic relief, the show depicts Spongebob and Patrick taking on the parental roles: Patrick as the dad and Spongebob as the mom. This seems harmless in the beginning, but later in the episode begins to turn into very common stereotypes. Patrick goes off to work, leaving Spongebob to take care of the clam, clean the house, and cook dinner. Every night he returns from work exhausted and cannot help take care of this clam that he equally agreed to raise. Think about the message it is showing young boys. For boys, if they grow up and get a job that they work hard at they do not have to help around the house. They can go off to work and come home late at night, hold there kid for a bit, and then just sit down. Leaving the woman (Spongebob in this case) to do all the housework, stay at home, and provide all the nurturing. In A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen, this is the behavior that made the main character, Nora, become so annoyed that she decided to abandon her family and find go off in the world to find herself. In my honest viewpoint, the Spongebob scene had nothing wrong with it. For thousands of years a man s role is to go off to work and provide for his family. This is engraved into the human ... Nuclear Power Is The Best Efficient Power Production Method Introduction: Over the years there has been controversy over whether nuclear power is the most efficient power production method in the world for the future. As global warming is increasing, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the air is also increasing, and a global concern is arising about whether the current power production methods using fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are long term, as these power production methods are seen as temporary because these recourses are becoming abundant. The most widely thought concern of the population is how long the systems we are currently are going to last before the fuel for power runs out. Similarly, there are ethnic concerns about the production of atomic bombs, as these are a form of fission but are an uncontrolled chain reaction unlike the controlled chain reaction of fission that provides energy in nuclear reactors. Nuclear energy allows one to produce energy without increasing the atmospheric carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases and does not stimulate global warming. There are two ways that this can be achieved, either through nuclear fission or through nuclear fusion. Fission is known as the splitting of large nuclei such as Uranium 235, resulting in a loss of mass and hence a release in energy in the form of heat. This energy is used to produce steam, making a turbine spin, and then providing the power for electricity to be produced. It is currently one of the strongest substitutes for power production methods using fossil fuels as nuclear fuels could potentially last for about 2000 years. Nuclear fusion, or the fusing together of light nuclei to form larger ones can create another form of nuclear energy. Essentially, it is the exact reaction that occurs in the sun, as the sun s heat is created by the bombardment of hydrogen atoms creating helium and a neutron during which energy is ... The story, Boys and Girls states As soon as I was done I ran out of, trying to get out of earshot before my mother thought of what she wanted me to do next (Munro 156). It shows a wide example of how gender roles are strictly implied in this household and how the little girl tries to avoid it as much as possible. The story follows between the lines between a woman being fragile and catering to men, and men not breaking and providing for the family. The feminist theory widely connects to the story because it gives an insight of the issue of the typical gender roles and what big of an impact it makes when they are not followed. According to the article Gender Inequality in the Home, by authors Janell Fetterolf and Lauren Rudman Despite women s increased presence and status in the workforce, there is still a disparity in domestic labor that disadvantages women (Fetterolf 220). It proves a critical point that women will always be set to gender role standards that they are expected to follow. The 11 year old girl struggles with wanting to be out with her father but still having to take responsibility for the tasks that are imposed and meant for her. According to the story, the girl s father introduced her as his, new hired man. I turned away and raked furiously, red in the face with pleasure (Munro 155). It seems as though she takes much pride in being seen as masculine figure, rather than being portrayed in the norm of a fragile good girl who is supposed to be at home doing housework. In the article, Feminism as Critique in a Neoliberal Age it states, This imputed gender subtext proved to be increasingly counterfactual with only a very small proportion of the population conforming to a normative dualistic model of separate masculine and feminine ... Does Manuka Honey Reduce The Turbidity Of Gram Negative... 1.1 Research Question: Does Manuka Honey reduce the turbidity of gram negative Escherichia Coli when mixed into a solution and will it have a larger antimicrobial effect than clear honey? 1.2 Genesis According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) a minimum of 2 million people become infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria and an estimated minimum of 23, 000 people die each year as a direct result of those infections . From the results, it is clear that all of the honeys had a large antimicrobial effect on the culture of E.coli, much more so than the other cultures of bacteria. Their effects on Straphylococcus aureus should also be noted. It is obvious that the clear honey had a negligible antimicrobial effect on all bacterium tested, excepting the E.coli colony. This was to be expected; however, as clear honey lacks the enzymes to create the non peroxide antimicrobial effects, caused by methylglyoxal, which is present in manuka honey. Therefore as the varying types of honey were most effective on the E.coli culture, it was selected for the main experiment. Furthermore, during this preliminary testing I experimented with the varying colour filters in the colourimeter, in order to establish which led to the most reliable and measurable results. The results of this experiment was that the blue filter resulted in larger results, meaning that it allowed an appropriate amount of light to reach the honey. Therefore the blue filter will be used in the main experiments, as opposed to the red, green and orange filters. 1.4 Theoretical basis: Escherichia coli Escherichia coli, often shortened to E.coli, is a bacterium in the Enterobacteriaceae family. Childhood and Education Otto grew up as the son of a middle class Glazier (Glass fitter) and attended the Goethe Gymnasium where he took an interest in classics. Hahn not only discovered nuclear fission but also discovered many new isotopes, namely, radiothorium (thorium 228), polonium 212, lead 210, and thorium 227. More terrifyingly for Hahn, he concocted poison gases in World War One, some of his own creation and some merely by following orders. In fact most shockingly, Hahn was never quite looking for nuclear fission. He enjoyed researching and discovering new radioactive isotopes and it was because of this that he stumbled upon nuclear fission. When Hahn discovered nuclear fission he had been working near to it for many a year with Lisa Meitner. Meitner and Hahn worked for years in Germany together and remained friends throughout their lives. In Germany they discovered isotopes together by bombarding certain particles with neutrons and observing how they reacted. When Meitner and Hahn researched nuclear fission, Hahn discovered particle induced fission. Otto did this by conducting an experiment in which they fired neutrons at Uranium 235 and observed its byproducts. From this experiment they discovered that Kr 92 and Ba 141 were produced along with extremely large amounts of energy and gamma radiation. At first Otto could not believe the results of his experiment, for it was so contrary to all he had believed. But after he had repeated it and confirmed the results with Meitner he knew ... The Blues Eyes Analysis The Blues Eyes is a story of a black girl named Pecola who dreams of having the ideal family portrayed in the story of Dick and Jane the white American family: She comes to realize that this life she dreams of is unattainable since she is black in a white society. She is enamored with Shirley Temple, a beautiful blue eyed white girl. Pecola feels that if she has blue eyes she would be beautiful and endearing to others. Morrison s novel describes how Pecola and her family strive to live up to the white standards that are imposed on them by a white society but find this goal to be unattainable. Pecola is made to feel that her blackness is ugly and not valued, only to have her feeling validated by others. Despite what she experiences, Pecola never gives up on her dream of beautiful blue eyes, only leading her into despair. The story begins with the description of Pecola s family: they live in a storefront because they were poor and black and they stayed there because they believed they were ugly (Morrison 38). Unfortunately, Pecola s feelings of ugliness are reinforced by her own parents; her father Cholly s ugliness came from his despair, dissipation, and violence directed toward pretty things and weak people (Morrison 38). The Importance Of Economic Inequality In Indonesia In the past thirty years, globalization and market openness lead world to a better stage of wealth, however, it is inevitable that without government intervention this prosperity is concentrated in the hands of the small elite. The uneven of wealth distribution or the gap between the rich and the poor called economic inequality. This essay will argue that the government of Indonesia needs to introduce some policies to reduce economic inequality because economic inequality has no benefit at all, Indonesia is a democratic country which aims to improve public welfare, and Indonesia, with the rest of the world, wants to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Economic inequality is commonly translated as income inequality. Based on OECD Factbook (2011), income inequality is measured as household disposable income in a particular year, consists of earnings, self employment and capital income and public cash transfers then deduct income taxes and social security contributions paid by households. The income of the household is attributed to each of its members, with an adjustment to reflect differences in needs for households of different sizes (p. 80). Moreover, economic inequality is measured by Gini coefficient, which is based on the comparison of cumulative proportions of the population against cumulative proportions of income they receive, and it ranges between 0 in the case of perfect equality and 1 in the case of perfect inequality. Andrew Peacock started out by telling us what LEAN is and isn t. The first time I heard LEAN I did think it stood for something, but Andrew reassured us that it is not an acronym nor does it have anything to do with working out to get lean. Because that is what you will get if you type it into Google. But what he did tell us is that LEAN is a process of evaluating and doing whatever it takes to improve. This process helps clear up waste from an organization, like making sure that customers don t stay on the phone too long without talking to someone, or spending unnecessary time looking for something in an office because it was not put in the right place. Just like our first guest speaker, Dave Klug, Andrew mentioned that LEAN does not happen without culture. LEAN was originally adopted with Toyota, and with its founder Henry Ford. When LEAN first started its results were things such as safe working conditions, higher customer value, and reduced frustration. How Did The Parthenon Contribute To The Pantheon The Parthenon in Athens and the Pantheon in Rome have both made significant contributions in architecture throughout the years from when they were built. They have also been important in helping us understand the cultures of the Greeks and Romans during the times the two buildings were constructed. Right from its name it is fairly obvious that the Parthenon was built as a dedication to Athena, the patron deity of Athens. The name Parthenon derives from one of Athena s epithets: Athena Parthenos. Parthenon therefore means house of Parthenos . From the 4th century BCE, the whole building acquired the name Parthenon. (M. Cartwright, 2012) The Parthenon was both a temple and a treasury. These two functions tremendously influenced its design. There is evidence that the temple was built to measure in order to accommodate the chryselephantine statue of Athena by Pheidius. (M. Cartwright, 2012) The Greeks had a very extensive mythology which they took very seriously. Due to this, building of the Parthenon was a form of gratitude to Athena for helping them win the war. The Impact Of Western Imperialism In East Asia Jun Woo Kang Mr. Tirkey IB MYP World History April 29th, 2016 The western imperialism in East Asia begins with European interactions into what was at the moment called East Indies. This began during the 15th century in search of trade routes leading to the Age of Exploration of the European empires which were in the flourishing cultural and intellectual developments with Renaissance. By the early 16th century, European merchants greatly expanded Western European influence and established numerous trade posts with the countries in Asia, benefiting the European countries economically. This trend originated from the Portuguese breaking the monopoly of the Arabs and Italians of trade between Asia and Europe by the discovery of sea route between the two continents. As a direct result, Western empires introduced their different ideologies to the East such as their Christian beliefs, and their new weaponries. In population based studies, as the Framingham study, the presence of AF increased long term mortality 1.5 to 1.9 times. WHAT ABOUT THE RISK OF EMBOLISM? The risk of embolism is one of the major problems in patients with AF. The annual risk of stroke in patients with a CHADS score = 0 is low, 0.36%; yet, the risk or stroke exists. Interestingly, patients with persistent or chronic lone AF have a risk of embolism of 1.3% per year, and this percentage may be low but not absent, especially if we bare in mind the cumulative risk. (4) Although this controversy deals with patients without structural heart disease, patients with AF frequently have hypertension, a condition that increases the risk of embolism (CHADS 1). I liked how the issue of sexuality played a role along with the issue of feminist goals in this play. I believe they complimented one another in that both groups strive for equal right among the majority. For example when Peter starts to march with the other women from the Art Institute. It shows that he is standing for a cause the effects another minority group in our society: women. I found Susan very interesting in the play. Act 2, Scene 2 is where I had the strongest reaction that is when Peter, Scoop, and Heidi went on a talk show. What made me mad was before the show Denise told Peter to act out his sexuality more than usual. Basically telling him to be the stereotypical, flaming homosexual for the television audience. It reminded me of the Jerry Springer episodes where they bring out the gay guests that have cheated on their lovers: been there, done that, now they are back for more attitude. Which is a false portrayal of the gay community. Betrayal happens in any kind of relationship whether is gay or straight relationship. The talk show they are on reminds me of the Dr. Laura show. April, the host, makes several comments that have gay derogatory undertones. April talks about how their generation is rich, powerful, famous, and even parents. Then she makes a comment to the effect of What if Peter Pan came through our bedroom windows? Peter Pan I think symbolizes homosexuality as a disease the way she talks about it. Her narrow minded perspective makes it seem that just because somebody chooses an alternative lifestyle that they can no longer be rich, powerful, famous, or even parents. Legislation once enacted to protect the intellectual property of the individual seems to have been flipped on its head to do the exact opposite. In the modern era, we see big corporate interests pushing for the extension of these deadlines while buying and hoarding copyrights, using lawyers as guard dogs. Visionaries like musical director Jonathan Larson and film director Chris Columbus, helped use the movie and musical platform to share the stories of hundreds of people facing adversity in the early 90 s. In the movie Angel and Collins are in a committed relationship, and together go to AIDS support groups, where they connect with other people suffering from the tragic disease. From the beginning of the movie it is known that Angel has contracted AIDS, which sadly enough eventually takes her life. Angel is aware she is dying and instead of focusing on monetary items, focuses on making the most of the relationships she s built with the other characters. Because of this she encourages the other characters to look past their differences and live everyday to it s fullest. One ironic thing to notice is that Angel actually becomes an angel and by the end of the movie is the constant reminder for the other characters to not live with hatred and resentment but love everyone equally. Angel is a symbol of equality and not labeling a person by their sexual orientation, social status, ethnic background, but by the quality of their inner character throughout the movie Rent. Another symbol in the movie is Mark, the narrator of the story and documentary filmmaker. Oddly enough Mark is one of the only characters who doesn t have HIV/AIDS or a past of drugs , but he is the one telling their stories. I think the director does this to help the audience understand that just because something doesn t affect you directly doesn t mean that it isn t happening and it is not important. Rent was set in the early 90 s and at the point there were thought to be with 8 10 million people worldwide that had AIDS/HIV, but the topic of human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome were not openly discussed by many. Currently, the U.S. has a relatively open trade policy and enjoys free trade with twenty countries1 and more are being added to this list through new agreements. But does it benefit from free trade? Evidence, which I will present in this paper, show that the benefits of free trade highly outweigh the little and often misinterpreted disadvantages. In light of this, the U.S. should adopt a free trade policy and look forward to new trade agreements. Trade involves exports too, and as 95% of the consumers in the world are outside of the U.S., free trade opens a portal for the U.S. producers to sell their goods to a larger pool of consumers who potentially value the goods more than the U.S. consumers.5 According to Daniella Markheim and Anthony Kim of The Heritage Institute, without free trade, the U.S. manufacturers would be limited to selling to a lower number of consumers inside the U.S. and this would mean less firms producing, fewer jobs, and even lower wages. They say Today, the $12 trillion U.S. economy is bolstered by free trade, a pillar of America s vitality. American exports support one in five U.S. manufacturing jobs. Jobs directly linked to the export of goods pay 13 to 18 percent more than other U.S. jobs. 6 Further, United States Trade Representative estimates that the U.S. exports supported 11.3 million jobs in 2013.
