Comparison Of Machiavellian Beliefs In The Prince And...
Niccolo Machiavelli, a Florence native, presented revolutionary ideas about leadership in his famous
work The Prince. This sort of how to handbook for rulers was written in a time when power was
frequently changing hands, leaving nations in constant confusion (The Prince, 443). Machiavelli
presented a way for these new leaders to maintain their power, encouraging such things as cruelty and
fear as a means of governing the common people. This new concept was drastically opposed to the
Christian ideals which had been taught for centuries. Despite its harshness, Machiavelli s doctrine was
accepted by many and has influenced some very popular men throughout history. One such person is
none other than William Shakespeare. Multiple plays written by Shakespeare are stories of men in
government who are either attempting to maintain their power or regain it. It is no wonder, then, why
Shakespeare would refer to The Prince as a resource when writing these plays. One play in particular,
King Lear, is evidence of Shakespeare s acknowledgement of Machiavellian beliefs. Throughout this
paly it may be witnessed how Machiavelli s ideas on what a ruler should be were taken into account
by the famous playwright, leading either to his characters success or downfall. One common theme
throughout both Machiavelli s The Prince and Shakespeare s King Lear is the frangibility of love.
According to Machiavelli, ...it is much safer to be feared than loved (The Prince, 452). He goes on to
justify this statement by observing that it is far easier to turn against one that is beloved than to defy
one who is feared. Shakespeare recognized this, incorporating into King Lear the idea that love is
quickly disregarded when opportunity comes knocking. This concept may be found throughout the
entire play, but is referenced specifically towards the beginning and end. As the opening scene begins,
King Lear is commanding his daughters to proclaim their love for him in exchange for a portion of his
kingdom. Both Regan and Gonerill put on an excellent façade of admiration for their aging father,
presenting him with the exact words he desires to hear. In return, the King grants them each a portion
of land. As the

In addition, since it is not told from a single person, there is no bias and it enables the narrator to
describe each character in a distinct and unique way. The purpose of utilizing third person omniscient
is to help the audience develop a deeper understanding of the characters and how they function and act
in the Igbo society.
9. Social/Political/Philosophical Agendas or Issues Being Dealt with by the Author(Themes)
One of the biggest agendas of Achebe in writing this novel is to present the point of view of the tribal
Africans. The presence of the Christian missionaries prove this point and Achebe recognized this
problem and how it essentially wiped out the true culture and tradition of the Igbo. He wanted to
display the real problems and lives of the Igbo society without any outside influence. Another
important theme that is conveyed is that being too strict or ambitious with our children cautions us to
behave with prudence as opposed to emotion. Throughout the book, Okonkwo lives by emotion and
his only goal is to come off as a strong fighter. His strict attitude towards Nwoye only causes him to
act against Okonkwo s choice and join the Christian missionaries. Achebe shows that we should be
flexible and raise our kids with judgement and leniency, because if we rule by emotion, it can lead to
our downfall. (As seen in both Okonkwo and

Why Adoptees Deserve To Adopt
Imagine growing up not knowing who your parents are, or if they re even alive. Adoptees can start to
feel like they re not good enough for their birth parents. Adoptees deserve to have access to their birth
records because if they don t, it can cause them a lot of pain, make them feel rejected by their birth
parents, and could even make them feel shame or guilt about being adopted. Adoptees feel pain from
being adopted because they can feel like their birth parents abandoned them and don t want anything

How To Write An Essay About African American Culture
Cross cultural is other cultures are studied to see similarities. For example, communication is
examined to see what worda they may have in common or how they communicate to other cultures. I
had to think deep and see how cross culture is in my life. There are many examples from the previous
chapter. I chose to go with chapter 18. I want to discuss the African slave trade, and how the African
culture shaped Black American culture in north America. When slaves were brought to America they
were striped from their culture. They were around other African cultures as well. These different
cultures could have been a rival tribe. So the Africans culture identity was challenged here in America.

Corn was a staple in the Americas which came from the native Americans. Corn became extremely
popular because a lot or people ate it. Since enslaved people ate form of corn at almost every meal,
they created a variety of ways to prepare it drawing inspiration from their Native American neighbors.
In the seventeenth century, many enslaved Africans may have noticed similarities between their
cultures (Regelski,The Soul of Food). Africans took this technique and incorporated into their way of
making bread which were called hoecake or ash cake. Corn bread was also a good source of food for
slaves that worked on the field. Because some of the time the master would not give them a break.
Corn beard was easy to eat because it did not require utensils. There are so many more food that relate

Parenting License
Inarguably, parents are one of the, if not the most, influential factors in young people s mental health.
For example, Dr.Robert Young, a psychologist, analyzed the children s perception of parenting and
their mental health, and the result showed that children who perceived their parents as being
controlling or neglectful had an increase in the probability of a psychiatric disorder at age 15 (Young).
According to another study, hopelessness had a positive association with both suicidal ideation and
suicide attempts. Psychologically controlling parenting, such as treating a child differently for
disagreeing with parents, had a positive association with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and
hopelessness (Li). Dr.Kayla Reed of the University ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dr.Jack Westman, a professor emeritus of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin who has been
serving more than 50 years to the psychiatric and developmental needs of children, outlines the
purpose and criteria of the parenting license. By establishing the license, the society will no longer
view parenting as a divine right but as an earned privilege that deserves more seriousness. In addition,
parenting license is not meant to hinder people from having kids; the criteria for parenting license will
be as straightforward as that of the marriage license, and the only people who will actually fail to
obtain the license would be neglectful and abusive parents who are likely to badly nurture children
and aggravate mental health problems (Westman).
Mental health problems are caused by the combination of many risk factors other than abusive
relationships, and a universal screening will be useful in identifying others with depression for reasons
other than abuse and neglect. Universal screening means that all members of a certain group will
undergo brief assessments designed to identify those at the risk of developing mental health
difficulties. Early universal screening identifies problems before they are aggravated and theoretically,
this should have the effect of reducing the number of those at risk being overlooked

nuclear energy. Iran should not be trusted with this sort of ability, because they are a dangerous
country that has used chemical weapons against its neighboring countries. Also, Iran is planning on

The United States and Israel would be in danger. In my opinion if a country is willing to use chemical
weapons during war and threaten to destroy an entire country and commit genocide, they should not
be allowed to have any sort of nuclear power at all. The supreme leader even said on a live broad cast
that we had watched my senior year that said Death to America . It is said that history repeats its self,
what is happening now happened in 1938 when Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain went to speak
with Adolf Hitler about negotiation. The prime minister left there thinking that Hitler s promises for
peace were in good faith in exchange for Germanys annex large parts of Czechoslovakia The Nazi
regime was a police state and Iran is a police state. The Nazis aim was to kill all the Jews in Europe
and Iran s aim is to destroy Israel. The Nazis hated America and what it stands for and so does Iran.
The alternative to this agreement was continuing and tightening the sanctions they were weakening
the Iranian regime and greatly breaking down its abilities to fund terror groups. Also, the stronger Iran
gets the more money they make means the more they will try and expand. The Iranian regime is a
bunch of religious fanatics who are morally from ISIS, Al Qaeda Boko haram and all the other
terrorist groups. Iran is the second highest country with executions right behind china. Iran is already
one of the biggest funders to terrorist groups so just imagine what they can do with another

Look Up By Gary Turk
I recently watched a video of a spoken word poetry entitled Look Up by Gary Turk, an award winning
filmmaker and spoken word artist. The poem highlights the author, Gary Turk s criticism of society s
overdependence and overuse of technology and social media. In his poetry, Turk cleverly uses a love
story to further strengthen his opinion and the message he wants to convey to us. In my opinion, Turk
makes some solid arguments that I agree with and does a good job in getting his point across,
however, there is one point he brings up which I do not agree with.
The first message I have deduced from the poem is that we should communicate with people in real
life instead of just through social media. In the poem, Gary says when we open our ... Show more

getting caught physically in an actual net. Gary likens the former to the latter, effectively conveying
his point that if you devote your whole life to the internet, you will not be able to appreciate the world
in all its wonder and beauty. The internet can only satisfy you so much. There is so much more out
there that we should experience that can not only make us happy, but can also contribute to our

Example Of Social Pedagogy
Social Pedagogy
Social pedagogy offers a holistic way of working with children and their families in ways that support
their well being, learning and growth. At the heart of social pedagogy lies a belief that each person
deserves to be treated with dignity and has potential.
In early year s settings, this requires meaningful and authentic relationships that enable practitioners to
recognise a child s potential, their qualities, strengths and interests, and to create learning situations in
which children can experience their resourcefulness and develop new abilities.
To help children develop, practitioners will carry out adult led activities with pedagogical strategies to

Relationships with others help children to define their self concept, self esteem, and ability to express
feelings. Social development is the ability to get along with others in a group. Interacting with others
allows children to begin to develop a sense of fairness and understand abstract concepts like sharing
with others.
Physical Development
Physical Development is the process of how children master control and coordination of their body.
There are two areas of physical development: gross motor (sometimes called large muscle) and fine
motor (sometimes called small muscle).
Gross motor activities involve movement of the entire body or larger parts of the body. Examples
include creeping, crawling, rolling, running, jumping, and dancing.
Fine motor activities involve movement of smaller parts of the body, like hands and feet. Examples
include grasping reaching, holding, banging, spinning, clapping, and hand eye coordination.
The Zone of Proximal Development
The zone of proximal development, often abbreviated as ZPD, is the difference between what a
learner can do without help and what he or she cannot do. The concept was introduced, but not fully
developed, by psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896 1934)

Ariel wonders Belinda will break Diana s law or some china jar shall receive a flaw; whether she shall

Lord Petre, a family companion, cut a lock of her hair without authorization, along these lines

The Role Of Popular News Media On An Electoral Environment
Information and Power
Information flow is a crucial component of any electoral process. The modern leadership dynamics,
which embraces democracy, rests on the electoral processes as the tools for gaining power. It,
therefore, means that an environment where the information flow is free, efficient and seamless
experiences balanced power distribution. In other circumstances, some people could, by design or
default, have the upper hand in the access to information. This means that these individuals have
greater balance of power to exercise it over others who may not be privileged enough to access it

Current Issues Regarding Premarital Cohabitation Essay
Current societal trends allow for more flexibility in establishing, building, and maintaining a
relationship with another individual. Decades ago it was not acceptable for a couple to have sex or live
together before they were married. Today, it is common for couples to reside together, even before
they are engaged. The rise of couples who cohabitate prior to marriage has altered the way our society
perceives marriage and relationships and led to a reformulation of the dating process. Prior to the 1960
s it was seen as untoward for couples to have live together if they were not married. The Civil Rights
Movement 1960 s and early 1970 s altered different aspects of society and how women are viewed.

156).
Despite the steady increase in cohabitation across the last several decades, research on its impact on
marital outcome is mixed. Some research has suggested that people who cohabitate long term and do
not plan to marry have lower relationship quality and less stable relationships. However, other
research has indicated that these couples do not have lower quality relationships (Jose, O Leary,
Moyer, 2010, p. 105).
Couples who choose to cohabitate are comprised of varying demographic variables that may be a
factor in their decision to cohabitate. White women are more likely to cohabitate than black or
Hispanic women and white and black men are more likely to cohabitate than Hispanic men (Casper
Bianchi, 2001, p. 155). Premarital cohabitation is associated with marital disruption in non Hispanic
white women, but not non Hispanic black of Mexican women. However, little of this disruption
appears to be attributed to differences in cohabitation (Phillips Sweeney, 2005, p. 297). Black and
white couples had equivalent in their expectations for marriage; however, black couples were less
likely to realize their expectations when cohabitating (Guzzo, 2009, p. 184). Although cohabitation
may be viewed as something that primarily occurs between young adults, a high proportion of couples
who cohabitate are in their mid thirties or older (Casper Bianchi, 2001, p. 157).

Dorothea Lange Analysis
Description
Dorothea Lange creates a work of art using her camera. This black and white photograph from the
depression era portrays the struggle of motherhood while in a destitute state. This photograph would
be much different if the value was altered. Using black and white with the photograph represents the
depression that overcame society at this time. The intensity the photographer reveals would alter if the
photo was in color. The focal point is the women s hand on the lower corner of her face as she stares

South Afric A Country Of Diversity
South Africa is a country of diversity, with 11 languages that are officially recognized Afrikaans,
English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, and Zulu (Statistics
South Africa, 2011). Although South Africa has diverse communities, much of its history has proven a
lack of representation. Up until 1994, South Africa was ruled by a white minority government, which
came into power in 1948 and enforced a racial segregation policy called apartheid a policy that
mandates that black and white communities live in separate areas, commute separately, etc. ( South
Africa: Background, n.d.). The corrupt government also stirred conflict around neighboring countries.
Eventually, the apartheid government dismantled as a result of an interim constitution created by F.W.
de Clerk and Nelson Mandela, both of whom led a multiracial forum called the Convention for a
Democratic South Africa (CODESA) to transform the oppressive white government into a multiracial
democracy ( South Africa: Background, n.d.). However, the residual damage from the previous regime
remains evident, with social problems such as poor education, high unemployment and poverty, and
HIV/AIDS still rampant ( South Africa: Background, n.d.). In fact, South Africa is home to the second
highest number of HIV/AIDS patients in the world ( South Africa: Background, n.d.). Despite the
problems that South Africa faces, South Africa dominates in terms of the economy, with its economy

Retraction Controversy Of Rizal
Rizal s Retraction Controversy
As of today, there is still an ongoing dispute regarding the controversy of Rizal s retraction before his
execution on the 30th of December, 1896. Other people insist that Rizal did retract while some says
that he did not. There are different evidences that appeared to defend each side. There were four well
known reasons behind Rizal s retraction. First, He wanted to marry Josephine Bracken and to make
her his wife legally. Second, He wanted to protect his family. Third, He wanted to reforms from the
Spanish Government. Lastly, He wanted to heal the sickness of the Catholic Church. All theories came
from the retraction paper that was written by Rizal. In the said retraction paper, Rizal wrote that he is

In Father Balaguer s statement, he said that Rizal retracted because he wanted to marry Josephine
Bracken, who was a Catholic, but when he was asked to show a certificate, he was not able to present
anything. It was impossible for the marriage to be the reason of retraction because there was no
marriage certificate found. There was no certificate that legalizes the marriage between Josephine
Bracken and Jose Rizal.
Rizal was not buried with a good standing. Rizal s body was buried ten months after his death. He was
also buried without a coffin in a cemetery for Anti Catholic Church. He should have been buried
properly if ever he was converted back to the Catholicism.
In my opinion, Rizal did not retract before his execution. After reading some of the articles, I was
convinced that he did not retract. If he retracted before his execution, then why was he not buried
properly? He was buried in the place for those who are against the Catholic Church. He did not even
get a proper burial. If he died as a catholic, they should have given him the burial that deserves. Why
would he marry Josephine Bracken if he was to die? It was said earlier that the retraction was made
for Rizal to be able to marry the love of his life, which is Josephine Bracken, then why was there no
marriage certificate presented. Besides, why would he even bother to marry Josephine Bracken if he
will die the next

Botox Research Paper
Today s society is focused on looking flawless, and achieving that perfect look. This is driven by the
idea that everyone should look like supermodels and actors on television. Many people go to different
extremes to become what they perceive as perfect . That is when Botox was introduced to help achieve
these desired looks, which are in popular demand. Botox is a minimally invasive and less expensive
cosmetic procedure. Botox injections have been used for frown lines between the eyes and smoothing
of facial wrinkles. It is also used for those stubborn wrinkles around the corner of the eyes, also
known as crows feet . There were nearly 2.5 million cosmetic procedures done with Botox in 2008,
according to The American Society of Aesthetic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first strains of Botox were discovered by a scientist trying to understand food poisoning. A
German scientist, Dr. Kerner determined that there was a toxin in spoiled sausages that were making
people ill, but what does this have to do with Botox? Well 7 more strains were discovered 70 years
later by another doctor, also investigating food poisoning, expanding on Dr. Kerner s discovery, and
found seven strains of botulinum toxin, four of which were harmful to humans. They considered using
the four bad stains of botulinum toxin as a weapon of war. They would inject the toxin into pills and
poison high ranking officials on the opposite side. Luckily this project was abandoned, which gave
researchers the chance to see the good in Botox. Science researchers discovered that injecting small
amounts of Botulinum toxin type A, which is one of the three less toxic strains, into hyperactive
muscles relaxed them. In the 1960 s they began to experiment with its helpful side effects, botulinum
toxin type A became the go to toxin in all research labs. The FDA approved botulinum toxin type A for
use on humans in the 1980 s, for everything from treating facial spasms to vocal spasms. Botox
became so popular that there was actually a Botox drought in 1997! Botox not only has medical
benefits, but is also is a safe and effective cosmetic treatment. In fact, Botox is the number one non
surgical cosmetic treatment in the

Leap Of The Brethren Pantry Summary
Least of the Brethren is a local food pantry in Pinkneyville, it is where I am choosing to plunge for my
assignment. I am choosing this culture because of the high number of low socioeconomic students that
attend school in our area. I feel it is important to understand the needs in our area in order to connect
with future students and their families. To be very honest, I know there is a great need for support in
our area. However, I assume the families that need this support also receive government assistance
through programs such as WIC and Link. Plunging into this culture I hope to gain a better
understanding of why pantries are still needed and how I can become more active in addressing the
need locally. With the knowledge I hope to gain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the break the volunteers asked us several questions. From what I gathered all of the volunteers
also need the assistance of the pantry. Many asked us how they could help us, assuming we had fallen
on hard times. I assured them they we were just there to help them and donate our time. Volunteers
receive each goods in their boxes in return for their help.
Application of Plunge Experience Prior to taking the plunge I was not aware that even with
government programs there is still a need for pantries in our local area. This brings a very large
challenge to my educational environment. I will need to find out which students will require this need
to be addressed. As a classroom teacher, I will need to bring awareness to the students that do not have
this need that a part of their role in our community is to help those in need. This can be done through
volunteering and donations.
The challenge that individuals from the group will bring to the education environment is one that
directly impact their learning. It is well understood that children cannot learn until their most basic
needs are met. Yes, we offer free breakfast to students, but many arrive too late to receive this service
and often one muffin is not enough to address their hunger. This plunge made me aware of the
challenges many students will face in my

Indian Independence Movement
Systems of governance and authority can have a profound influence on the development of human
societies. All types of governments from local politics to federal bureaucracies to huge empires
maintain their authority through specific techniques, including fostering a shared identity
(nationalism), developing economic interdependence, and sometimes using overt force. Challenges to
that authority through violent and nonviolent revolution can have significant consequences, including
the collapse and replacement of whole systems of governance. You have studied multiple forms of
governance (including ancient and contemporary empires) and resistance to authority (in both violent
and nonviolent revolutions) that occurred in societies within the Americas, India, Southeast Asia, and
Africa. In this task, you will examine systems of governance and the reactions of the governed peoples
in specific areas of the world. Task: A. Discuss the rise of imperialism or colonialism in one area of
the world from India. India came under British colonialism or imperialism via subterfuge from the
British and through their desire for expansion and money. It all started with the European trading
advantages that Europe enjoyed in India and with unrest of the country with Hindu majority and
Muslims. Between 1450 1750, Dutch traders stepped into the Indies whilst British traders took
advantage of the weak Mughal Empire and during the Seven Years War emerged victorious over
France and became the dominant

David Boonin Argument Analysis
As it was presented earlier, David Boonin s interest based argument has three major elements: 1) A
modified future like ours account of Don Marquis, 2) Relationship between desires and right to life,
and 3) Organized cortical brain activity as a necessary condition for the onset of consciousness. It is
the first two elements which are of major concern here.
David Boonin modifies Marquis future like ours argument and converts it to a desire based account,
before developing his analytical distinction of desires that has been shown earlier. Once values and
desires are used interchangeably (which itself raises concerns), the idea that the foetus values its future
or comes to value its future can be restated as that which a foetus desires, ... Show more content on

First, it is not the property of the valuable future that is morally significant. It is the desire for a
valuable future which is morally important. Second, there is an implicit emphasis on the present. The
foetus in this new version desires in the present that its future be preserved. In the original version the
foetus will come to value its future. In fact, the focus on the present is perhaps one of the reasons
Boonin has to focus on desires. What drives Boonin to focus on the present is that the morally
significant property that would confer the status of personhood on the foetus must be actually present
in the foetus for it to qualify as a person. If it is a potential property, an essential property or even a
capacity for a potential property, then Boonin will not be able to argue against those who support the
foetus inviolability from the moment of conception. Boonin must show that the foetus is not inviolable
before they start to have present conscious desires. Since he is basing his argument on Marquis future
like ours argument, any modification of the original argument to the present conscious desires version
must be done in such a way that the same criteria applies to infants, suicidal teenagers, temporary
comatose adults as well as the foetus. In order for the argument to work on all these cases, Boonin
creates the analytical distinctions between the occurrent vs dispositional desires and actual vs ideal
desires, as presented earlier, to say that it is the property of only present ideal dispositional conscious
desires that is a morally significant property for personhood. Once the foetus meets the conditions
necessary of conscious desires, that is from the onset of advanced organised cortical brain activity, a
foetus can have present ideal dispositional conscious

How Is Authority Shown In A Few Good Men
The movie A Few Good Men, made in December of 1992, is based on the premise of obedience to
authority as its primary message. Two marines, Lance Cpl. Harold W. Dawson and Private Louden
Downey were given orders from their superior, Colonel Nathan Jessup, to carry out what is called a
Code Red . A Code Red is a form of hazing when a particular private does not perform his duties up to
the marine corp standards. The two marines could not deny the order or else they would be punished
themselves. Private Santiago was the marine who was victimized by the Code Red and later died from
this extreme physical warning. This resulted in Dawson and Downey being arrested and set to trial for
attempted murder. Two articles that have similar messages and idea with this movie, are Just Do What
the Pilot Tells You by Theodore Dalrymple and Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem
by Erich Fromm. In Dalrymple s article he displays the idea of questioning the authority around you,
but understanding when it is appropriate to follow people with more credibility. In Erich Fromm s
article, there is a sense of mankind being evolved by various acts of disobedience. The author
discusses the moral violation of being obedient to authority vs. the social violation. Both articles
connect to A Few Good Men, because the decision to obey authority is a moral and social one;
furthermore, a vital part of obedience is thoughtfully judging the situation before one chooses whether
to obey or

Teaching
LESSON 1 1. Which of the instructional materials enumerated in this lesson do you often use? Are
there categories you have not tried? Why?
Materials often used: A. Printed and Duplicated Materials
I do use a lot of printed materials in teaching my pupils. I do find that my pupils do better when we are
making use of the board but I do need an evidence to show how the pupil is doing to their parent or
guardian and that is by means of printed materials. B. Non Projected Display Materials
I handle kids with different needs; one for example is that I have pupils with Autism. Those who are
on the spectrum learn best with visual materials that is why the center that I m in has a lot of
instructional materials to choose from. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Thomas Edison created the Tin Foil Phonograph on accident while he was experimenting with the
transmitter of the telegraph. The Tin Foil Phonograph is a machine that can store and replay sounds.
Edison was the first to use tin foil to wrap around the cylinder to store the recording. He made the
Tinfoil phonograph in 1870 and then later created the phonograph in 1877. However, in December of

Synaptic Activity Is Vital For The Passage Of Information...
Synaptic activity is vital for the passage of information throughout the nervous system, as it allows for
electrical impulses to be passed from one neuron to another. Electrical impulses in the form of action
potentials are passed through the axon of a neuron towards the axon terminal. This information is then
passed across the synaptic cleft to receptors present on the postsynaptic membrane via the process of
neurotransmission. Drugs can interrupt this specific process in a variety of ways such as through
affecting the production, storage and release of neurotransmitters, the presynaptic and postsynaptic
receptors as well as the reuptake and destruction of neurotransmitters (Carlson, 2014). Selective
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) are just two
types of drugs which can affect different pathways in this process of neurotransmission. In doing so,
the neurotransmitter serotonin is made more available within the central nervous system (CNS), a
neurotransmitter believed to be central to the affective disorder of depression, which is caused by a
deficiency of serotonin.
The process of neurotransmission begins with an action potential. An action potential can be described
as the brief electrical impulse that provides the basis for conduction of information along an axon
(Carlson, 2014), and is determined by the movement of ions through ion channels in or out of a cell,
depending on the permeability of the membrane, forces of

Theme Of Rape Of The Lock
Mock epic is a narrative poem which aims at mockery and laughter by using almost all the
characteristic features of an epic but for a trivial subject. In the The Rape of the Lock there is an
invocation to Muses, intention of subject, battles, supernatural machinery, and journey on water,
underworld journey, long speeches, feasts (coffee house), Homeric similes and grand style but all for a
simple family dispute instead of a national struggle. The grand action of a low subject produces
comical laughter and makes the story more absurd. Instead of magnificent passions and great fights
between heroes in which the immortals take part, we see the theme of The Rape of the Lock as a
minor passionate quarrel assisted by the spirits of the air. The ... Show more content on

In the poem Rape of the Lock, Pope has introduced the episodes of the game of Omber which suggests
the powerful battle and the cards involve the soldiers described in great detail. There is also the battle
between lords and ladies just like the battle in epic poem. But in mock epic this battle is fought with
fans and snuff instead of with swords and spears. There are single fight between Belinda and Baron
and between Clarissa and Sir Plume. Another very important element of an epic is the active
participation of supernatural machinery like god and goddesses. In The Rape of the Lock, there are
sylphs and gnomes. These aerial spirits are small and unimportant things and are therefore, exactly in
keeping with the triviality of the theme. These aerial spirits guards the person of the heroine that is
Belinda and when there is fight between the flowers of Belinda and those of the Baron, they take part
in the fight like god and goddesses in war. Pope described the protecting sylph under Ariel. In that the
sylphs are the lampoon of epic deities. A long dangerous journey on water is a must in an epic. Here in
the poem The Rape of the Lock , Belinda takes a relaxed journey on water without any stress and
danger. She travels up the Thames in a boat to join Hampton Court to play the game of card Omber
adorning her

  • 2. Comparison Of Machiavellian Beliefs In The Prince And... Niccolo Machiavelli, a Florence native, presented revolutionary ideas about leadership in his famous work The Prince. This sort of how to handbook for rulers was written in a time when power was frequently changing hands, leaving nations in constant confusion (The Prince, 443). Machiavelli presented a way for these new leaders to maintain their power, encouraging such things as cruelty and fear as a means of governing the common people. This new concept was drastically opposed to the Christian ideals which had been taught for centuries. Despite its harshness, Machiavelli s doctrine was accepted by many and has influenced some very popular men throughout history. One such person is none other than William Shakespeare. Multiple plays written by Shakespeare are stories of men in government who are either attempting to maintain their power or regain it. It is no wonder, then, why Shakespeare would refer to The Prince as a resource when writing these plays. One play in particular, King Lear, is evidence of Shakespeare s acknowledgement of Machiavellian beliefs. Throughout this paly it may be witnessed how Machiavelli s ideas on what a ruler should be were taken into account by the famous playwright, leading either to his characters success or downfall. One common theme throughout both Machiavelli s The Prince and Shakespeare s King Lear is the frangibility of love. According to Machiavelli, ...it is much safer to be feared than loved (The Prince, 452). He goes on to justify this statement by observing that it is far easier to turn against one that is beloved than to defy one who is feared. Shakespeare recognized this, incorporating into King Lear the idea that love is quickly disregarded when opportunity comes knocking. This concept may be found throughout the entire play, but is referenced specifically towards the beginning and end. As the opening scene begins, King Lear is commanding his daughters to proclaim their love for him in exchange for a portion of his kingdom. Both Regan and Gonerill put on an excellent façade of admiration for their aging father, presenting him with the exact words he desires to hear. In return, the King grants them each a portion of land. As the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of utilizing third person omniscient is to help the audience develop a deeper understanding of the characters and how they function and act in the Igbo society. 9. Social/Political/Philosophical Agendas or Issues Being Dealt with by the Author(Themes) One of the biggest agendas of Achebe in writing this novel is to present the point of view of the tribal Africans. The presence of the Christian missionaries prove this point and Achebe recognized this problem and how it essentially wiped out the true culture and tradition of the Igbo. He wanted to display the real problems and lives of the Igbo society without any outside influence. Another important theme that is conveyed is that being too strict or ambitious with our children cautions us to behave with prudence as opposed to emotion. Throughout the book, Okonkwo lives by emotion and his only goal is to come off as a strong fighter. His strict attitude towards Nwoye only causes him to act against Okonkwo s choice and join the Christian missionaries. Achebe shows that we should be flexible and raise our kids with judgement and leniency, because if we rule by emotion, it can lead to our downfall. (As seen in both Okonkwo and ... • 11. Parenting License Inarguably, parents are one of the, if not the most, influential factors in young people s mental health. For example, Dr.Robert Young, a psychologist, analyzed the children s perception of parenting and their mental health, and the result showed that children who perceived their parents as being controlling or neglectful had an increase in the probability of a psychiatric disorder at age 15 (Young). According to another study, hopelessness had a positive association with both suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Psychologically controlling parenting, such as treating a child differently for disagreeing with parents, had a positive association with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and hopelessness (Li). Dr.Jack Westman, a professor emeritus of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin who has been serving more than 50 years to the psychiatric and developmental needs of children, outlines the purpose and criteria of the parenting license. By establishing the license, the society will no longer view parenting as a divine right but as an earned privilege that deserves more seriousness. In addition, parenting license is not meant to hinder people from having kids; the criteria for parenting license will be as straightforward as that of the marriage license, and the only people who will actually fail to obtain the license would be neglectful and abusive parents who are likely to badly nurture children and aggravate mental health problems (Westman). Mental health problems are caused by the combination of many risk factors other than abusive relationships, and a universal screening will be useful in identifying others with depression for reasons other than abuse and neglect. Universal screening means that all members of a certain group will undergo brief assessments designed to identify those at the risk of developing mental health difficulties. Early universal screening identifies problems before they are aggravated and theoretically, this should have the effect of reducing the number of those at risk being overlooked ... The supreme leader even said on a live broad cast that we had watched my senior year that said Death to America . It is said that history repeats its self, what is happening now happened in 1938 when Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain went to speak with Adolf Hitler about negotiation. The prime minister left there thinking that Hitler s promises for peace were in good faith in exchange for Germanys annex large parts of Czechoslovakia The Nazi regime was a police state and Iran is a police state. The Nazis aim was to kill all the Jews in Europe and Iran s aim is to destroy Israel. The Nazis hated America and what it stands for and so does Iran. The alternative to this agreement was continuing and tightening the sanctions they were weakening the Iranian regime and greatly breaking down its abilities to fund terror groups. Also, the stronger Iran gets the more money they make means the more they will try and expand. The Iranian regime is a bunch of religious fanatics who are morally from ISIS, Al Qaeda Boko haram and all the other terrorist groups. Iran is the second highest country with executions right behind china. Iran is already one of the biggest funders to terrorist groups so just imagine what they can do with another $150,000,000,000. • 14. Look Up By Gary Turk I recently watched a video of a spoken word poetry entitled Look Up by Gary Turk, an award winning filmmaker and spoken word artist. The poem highlights the author, Gary Turk s criticism of society s overdependence and overuse of technology and social media. In his poetry, Turk cleverly uses a love story to further strengthen his opinion and the message he wants to convey to us. In my opinion, Turk makes some solid arguments that I agree with and does a good job in getting his point across, however, there is one point he brings up which I do not agree with. American Born Chinese Monkey King Conflict American Born Chinese Monkey King Conflict Essay In the book American Born Chinese, by Gene Luen Yang, the Monkey King experiences the conflict of man versus society. He wants to be recognized as a powerful deity. He is denied that status by other deities because he is a monkey. Look. You may be a king you may even be a deity but you are still a monkey. (Yang 2 15). As shown in this quote, the guard of Heaven discriminates the Monkey King by not treating him as a deity because he is a monkey. At the heart of social pedagogy lies a belief that each person deserves to be treated with dignity and has potential. In early year s settings, this requires meaningful and authentic relationships that enable practitioners to recognise a child s potential, their qualities, strengths and interests, and to create learning situations in which children can experience their resourcefulness and develop new abilities. There are two areas of physical development: gross motor (sometimes called large muscle) and fine motor (sometimes called small muscle). Gross motor activities involve movement of the entire body or larger parts of the body. Examples include creeping, crawling, rolling, running, jumping, and dancing. Fine motor activities involve movement of smaller parts of the body, like hands and feet. Examples include grasping reaching, holding, banging, spinning, clapping, and hand eye coordination. The Zone of Proximal Development The zone of proximal development, often abbreviated as ZPD, is the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she cannot do. Ariel wonders Belinda will break Diana s law or some china jar shall receive a flaw; whether she shall stain the honour or new brocade; whether she shall forget her prayers or miss a dance party; whether she shall loose her heart or her necklace . These lines show how easily and irreparably chastity might be lost in the world of fashion. In the 18th century honour to a lady was publically worn accessory like her brocade which could be easily stained. The character of Belinda is the courageous woman of The Rape of the Lock. Pope constructs her character in light of the authentic Arabella Fermor, the little girl of a noble Catholic gang. Robert, Lord Petre, a family companion, cut a lock of her hair without authorization, along these lines bringing about a crack between their two families. In other circumstances, some people could, by design or default, have the upper hand in the access to information. Decades ago it was not acceptable for a couple to have sex or live together before they were married. Today, it is common for couples to reside together, even before they are engaged. The rise of couples who cohabitate prior to marriage has altered the way our society perceives marriage and relationships and led to a reformulation of the dating process. Prior to the 1960 s it was seen as untoward for couples to have live together if they were not married. Despite the steady increase in cohabitation across the last several decades, research on its impact on marital outcome is mixed. Some research has suggested that people who cohabitate long term and do not plan to marry have lower relationship quality and less stable relationships. However, other research has indicated that these couples do not have lower quality relationships (Jose, O Leary, Moyer, 2010, p. 105). Couples who choose to cohabitate are comprised of varying demographic variables that may be a factor in their decision to cohabitate. White women are more likely to cohabitate than black or Hispanic women and white and black men are more likely to cohabitate than Hispanic men (Casper Bianchi, 2001, p. 155). Premarital cohabitation is associated with marital disruption in non Hispanic white women, but not non Hispanic black of Mexican women. However, little of this disruption appears to be attributed to differences in cohabitation (Phillips Sweeney, 2005, p. 297). Black and white couples had equivalent in their expectations for marriage; however, black couples were less likely to realize their expectations when cohabitating (Guzzo, 2009, p. 184). • 27. David Boonin Argument Analysis As it was presented earlier, David Boonin s interest based argument has three major elements: 1) A modified future like ours account of Don Marquis, 2) Relationship between desires and right to life, and 3) Organized cortical brain activity as a necessary condition for the onset of consciousness. It is the first two elements which are of major concern here. David Boonin modifies Marquis future like ours argument and converts it to a desire based account, before developing his analytical distinction of desires that has been shown earlier. Once values and desires are used interchangeably (which itself raises concerns), the idea that the foetus values its future or comes to value its future can be restated as that which a foetus desires, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, it is not the property of the valuable future that is morally significant. It is the desire for a valuable future which is morally important. Second, there is an implicit emphasis on the present. The foetus in this new version desires in the present that its future be preserved. In the original version the foetus will come to value its future. In fact, the focus on the present is perhaps one of the reasons Boonin has to focus on desires. What drives Boonin to focus on the present is that the morally significant property that would confer the status of personhood on the foetus must be actually present in the foetus for it to qualify as a person. If it is a potential property, an essential property or even a capacity for a potential property, then Boonin will not be able to argue against those who support the foetus inviolability from the moment of conception. Boonin must show that the foetus is not inviolable before they start to have present conscious desires. Since he is basing his argument on Marquis future like ours argument, any modification of the original argument to the present conscious desires version must be done in such a way that the same criteria applies to infants, suicidal teenagers, temporary comatose adults as well as the foetus. In order for the argument to work on all these cases, Boonin creates the analytical distinctions between the occurrent vs dispositional desires and actual vs ideal desires, as presented earlier, to say that it is the property of only present ideal dispositional conscious desires that is a morally significant property for personhood. Once the foetus meets the conditions necessary of conscious desires, that is from the onset of advanced organised cortical brain activity, a foetus can have present ideal dispositional conscious ... Harold W. Dawson and Private Louden Downey were given orders from their superior, Colonel Nathan Jessup, to carry out what is called a Code Red . A Code Red is a form of hazing when a particular private does not perform his duties up to the marine corp standards. The two marines could not deny the order or else they would be punished themselves. Private Santiago was the marine who was victimized by the Code Red and later died from this extreme physical warning. In Dalrymple s article he displays the idea of questioning the authority around you, but understanding when it is appropriate to follow people with more credibility. In Erich Fromm s article, there is a sense of mankind being evolved by various acts of disobedience. The author discusses the moral violation of being obedient to authority vs. the social violation. • 31. Synaptic Activity Is Vital For The Passage Of Information... Synaptic activity is vital for the passage of information throughout the nervous system, as it allows for electrical impulses to be passed from one neuron to another. Electrical impulses in the form of action potentials are passed through the axon of a neuron towards the axon terminal. This information is then passed across the synaptic cleft to receptors present on the postsynaptic membrane via the process of neurotransmission. Drugs can interrupt this specific process in a variety of ways such as through affecting the production, storage and release of neurotransmitters, the presynaptic and postsynaptic receptors as well as the reuptake and destruction of neurotransmitters (Carlson, 2014). Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) are just two types of drugs which can affect different pathways in this process of neurotransmission. In doing so, the neurotransmitter serotonin is made more available within the central nervous system (CNS), a neurotransmitter believed to be central to the affective disorder of depression, which is caused by a deficiency of serotonin. The process of neurotransmission begins with an action potential. An action potential can be described as the brief electrical impulse that provides the basis for conduction of information along an axon (Carlson, 2014), and is determined by the movement of ions through ion channels in or out of a cell, depending on the permeability of the membrane, forces of ...
