2. Unit 13 – Planning and Pitching a Print based Media Product - Proposal
Format: Magazine
I will be planning to make a new rock/ indie and alternative music magazine. As well as that I will
produce a double page spread and front cover of Record magazine to help promote it and use
this as an exemplar of how everything will be laid out and presented.
Working Title:
The working title is ‘Record’ and there could be a slight possibility that this could change. The
reason why this is chosen is because people can keep a ‘record’ and be up to date in the music
industry. The masthead would be in a black colour because it’ll stand out against light
backgrounds.
Genre:
The sub-genre of Record magazine will be rock, maybe rap, alternative and indie music, so it
would be competing with the likes of Q, NME and possibly XXL magazine. This is because these
magazines have the sub-genre of rock and rap.
Content:
Inside Record magazine you will get a variation of images, features of any well-known or
upcoming bands/ artists as well as reviews on gigs and albums. This is because the reader can
then decide whether they would want to go see a band/ artist live or buy a new album. Also they
could become interested in any new artists which would also be giving that new artist(s)
recognition.
Style or Approach:
The magazine will have colour denotations being straightforward and plain because it will mainly
be black and white, although I would have some conventions to be in red so it’ll be more effective
when conventions will stand out against plain colours such as the masthead or a quote on the
double page spread.
For the masthead I have chosen white font on a red background because a simple colour will be
more noticeable against a bright, bold background.
The connotations of black is that the mood/ feeling is quite dark and possibly have some anger,
the mood being opposite to happy or excitement, ‘in your face’ and this links to the genre of rock
and rap because not all songs are cheerful and are more likely to have anger in them.
For my magazine I am going to use Adobe Photoshop CS5 to produce my front cover and double
page spread so then it will be easier to upload my conventions and edit when necessary.
Moreover, the tools in Photoshop will help with (for example) editing the images I am going to
use, especially on the front cover. Then for the double page spread it’ll be beneficial for adding
conventions such as any quotes in the block of texts.
Audience:
For Record magazine, the audience will have an age range of 15-35 years, mainly be male,
possibly be C1, C2 and E socio-economic needs and the ethnicity would be quite diverse due to
the selection of genres. The reasoning for this would mainly be based on stereotyping people
because you are more likely to have a younger generation listening to rock and rap and then in
that genre you would mainly have a larger male proportion in comparison with a female group.
Length:
Including the front and back cover, I will produce 32 pages because then there are 30 pages of
content which will be plenty for a monthly magazine. Additionally, the size would be A4 (around
8”X11”) because if it is any bigger, not many people would want to carry that around and if it
smaller then some consumers may find it difficult to read.
Frequency:
My magazine will have a monthly frequency so it is possible to gather all the information needed
for the magazine otherwise it would not have the content it is supposed to and then that’ll mean
no one would be interested in the magazine. Due to it being a monthly magazine, this means
that the price may have to be higher, compared to a weekly frequency, so I would sell the
magazine at £3.99 which is also the same price as many other magazines so the only aspect that I
would compete with would be the standard and content inside the magazine.
