Postcoital bleeding : definition, causes, diagnosis, management

1. POST COITAL
BLEEDING
-PELVSIO

2. Spotting or bleeding that occurs after sexual intercourse is
referred to as " Postcoital bleeding"

3. CAUSES:
•An infection such as a pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a
sexually transmitted infection (STI), or chlamydia,
•Cervix or uterus polyps,
•Vaginal dryness,
•Vaginal trauma,
•Cervical ectropion,
•Abnormal cells on the cervix,

4. •Damage to the vagina, such as tears caused by childbirth, or
friction during sex,
•Cervical or vaginal cancer,
•Vaginitis,
•Endometriosis

5. DIAGNOSIS:
•A pregnancy test,
•A pelvic examination,
•Pap smear,
•Colposcopy,
•Ultrasound,
•Biopsy,

6. •Speculum examination,
•HVS,
•STI screening,
•TVS.

7. HISTORY:
•Frequency & timing of bleeding,
•Menstrual history,
•Smear/colposcopy history,
•Contraception history,
•Sexual history for STI,
•Medical history,

8. •Medication like anticoagulants
•Dyspareunia.

9. TREATMENT:
•Vaginal moisturizers,
•Antibiotics for infections
•Surgical removal, cryotherapy, or electrocautery for cervical
ectropion,
•Removal of polyps,
•Surgery or therapy for cancer,
•Low-dose vaginal oestrogen therapy for vaginal dryness.
