2. The pap smear test is done to screen for cervical cancer.
Women between the ages of 21 to 65, need this test.
The test checks for:
•Abnormal cells in the cervix (precancerous cells),
•Human papillomavirus (HPV),
•Cervical cancer.
3. How often do you take this test?
•Below 21 years - No need.
•21 to 29 years - Every 3 years.
•30 to 65 years - Every 3 years with a Pap test only or every
5 years with a Pap/HPV co-test.
•Above 65 years - No need.
4. You may need this test if you have health-related issues like
•Cervical cancer,
•HIV infection,
•A weakened immune system
•Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES), etc.,
5. Preparation for the test:
This test can't be taken during periods.
You should follow the following steps 48 hours before the test
is done;
•Don’t have sex or use lubricants,
•Don’t use sprays or powders near your vagina,
•Don’t insert tampons, dilators, cream, etc,
•Don’t douche.
6. Procedure:
•Into your vagina, a metal or plastic tool is inserted to remain
your vagina open, to see your cervix.
•Then the tissue is scraped from your cervix with the help of
the spatula.
•This procedure is not painful, but you may have a little
discomfort.
7. Results:
Normal - negative
Anormal - this doesn't mean you have cancer. It may be;
•Mild inflammation,
•HPV or other infections,
•Cancer, or precancer.
