HYPODERMIC NEEDLE
Definition
Example
It allows us, the audience, to reflect upon the media and how it
has influenced the public, also forming collective opinions and
different beliefs. This means that people are most likely to
believe what is posted on media as the truth.
A broadcast in 1938 called ‘War of the Worlds’ had a section of
the show set as a news show reporting on an alien invasion.
This caused many Americans to believe that the said alien
invasion was indeed real.
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
INFORMATION
We use different forms of ‘social media’ to find various
kinds of information such as Twitter and Instagram,
where you are able to follow various people and see what
they post e.g. updates or photos. We also use social
media to connect and talk to other people, such as with
Snapchat which allows you to send photos to other
people whilst adding captions and other things. People
also use social media for finding and seeking
information, whether it being about a certain celebrity or
about an upcoming film, we use social media to find it.
We also use various other recourses such as BBC News
to find out information that is currently going on. Using
social media can effect people health state, making them
happier since they have ways to communicate with other
people and feel a sense of belonging. Social media can
also help people to develop different behavioural traits
which could affect the way a person functions outside of
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
PERSONAL IDENTITY
Using social media can help people develop different
behavioural traits which could effect the way that person
lives outside of social media. This could lead the person
to communicate differently with people in and out of
social media, which could also lead to the person making
different friends who also have the same behavioural
traits. A person could identify with others through social
media about a certain celebrity and inspirational figure
or a fictional character which normally involves a
relatively ‘large’ fan-base. Social media can help
reinforce a persons personal values. I use social media to
communicate and keep in touch with my friends. I also
use it to see what celebrities I like are doing, through
apps such as Instagram etc…
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
INTEGRATION AND SOCIAL
INTERACTION
Social media can become a substitute for real-world
companionship, which could lead to a person developing
different behavioural traits and how they communicate
with others. This can also cause the way a person is
identified with others due to social media. A person
could have a certain interest in a hobby or person that
they can share with others through social media which
could help that person develop more social skills toward
that subject. I use social media applications such as
Instagram and Facebook to communicate with my friends
and talk about different interests that we all share
together. Using social media can help a person get a
sense of belonging, since they may not fit well in society
in real life. Social media can help boost a persons self
confidence around what they enjoy and are passionate
about. If I wanted to identify with others I would play
USES AND GRATIFICATIONS
ENTERTAINMENT
If I wanted to be entertained through social media I
would use the applications Instagram or Snapchat since
you’re able to post and watch videos as well as talk to
my friends. If I felt like I wanted to relax I would listen to
music or watch videos from the application YouTube. If I
wanted escape I would watch videos/listen to music or I
would find a television show and/or film that I haven’t
seen before and watch it, as well as trying to guess the
ending of them film/television show to keep myself
entertained.
CONSUMER GENERATED
CONTENT
Example
What are the advantages to media producers?
Why would the audience generate content?
People can watch and enjoy the content that the media producers
have created for free(most of the time). You can also make money
by making content on applications such as YouTube.
YouTube. As it’s users are able to create content that anyone is
able to watch for free(most times) and make some form of money
from it as well. Instagram is also one as users can submit their
own photos wavering their ownership of images allowing
Instagram to use the images commercially
Users on these platforms could generate different kinds of
context in order to receive money or become famous.
