2. Planning
I plan to take 8 different photos that fit in line with how I want my film to look e.g., where I want certain things to be placed, where I want
people to stand (since there can only be one character, if there are any characters that are in the background then they would either move or I
would focus on the main character).
There isn’t anyone that will specifically be needed when I take my photos (e.g., I won’t need any assistance with monitoring the camera setup,
making sure that everything is safe whilst taking photos).
There will not be many resources that I will need, I will primarily only need a camera and potentially a tripod depending on the types of
photos I will be taking (e.g., I don’t know if I’ll be able to take smooth enough photos by myself so I may need to also use a tripod to ensure
that all of my photos are of good quality).
I plan to take these photos during my free time out of college, since the main character for my film is a dog. I may require assistance from
another person (most likely someone from my household) in order to help me take the photos, since there could be issues with my dog either
not staying still or needing another person to hold things whilst I take the photographs.
Edit: I ended up needing assistance when taking my photos because I found it to be a lot more difficult to take them on my own. The process
ended up being a lot more simple when I received assistance. This meant that I was able to focus on taking the photos whilst I had another
person hold my dog so that he doesn’t move during the photoshoot.

4. This is one of the first images that I took for my storyboards/my portfolio of
eight images. The purpose of this image was to show a scene that was
going to occur during my short film, the scene is when my dog first notices
that the door has been shut and that he is now stuck inside of the room and
has to try and escape on his own.
The reason why I chose this image, despite having to change my overall
story/plot of my short film due to filming issues, is because it still fits in with
both narratives of my dog being trapped inside of a room and wanting to
escape. The only difference between the two is the locations and the
motivation (e.g., in the first draft of my film my dog wants to escape from the
kitchen so that he can go outside and play however the final draft has my
dog wanting to escape from the living room to follow one of the household
members who have shut him inside by mistake).
This is the second of my eight images for my portfolio which represents a
scene that will occur during my short film. Soon after my dog is locked
inside of the living room, he has to try and escape on his own. I wanted to
try and experiment to see if, like the photo, to shoot my film from an angle
that helps showcase that my dog is the one opening the door, rather than
myself.
The reason why I chose this image was because, at the time, I thought that
I would be able to include this particular scene in my film (which I still can,
since when actually filming I ended up filming this scene. However I
decided that I would rather go with the version that uses a leash
instead of my dogs paw).
5. This is the third image that I took for my portfolio. The purpose of this image
was to showcase a scene that was going to occur during my short film. The
scene was supposed to go as followed; once my dog realizes that the door
to go outside is shut, he tries to get the attention of the other household
members.
The reason why I chose this image, even though the overall plot line has
changed (as explained previously), is that I think that the idea could still fit in
somewhat e.g., instead of having my dog try to get the attention of someone
else (referring to the shot composition and the position of my dog in the
photo i.e., him on two legs jumping up to another person sat on a chair) I
could instead use this as a way for my dog to grab some form of object (the
leash that he will use on the door and escape is what I will most likely use
this for) so that he can leave the room.
This is the fourth image that I took for my portfolio. I wanted this particular
image, as well as all of my other images, to indicate or showcase what my
short film will look like once I have filmed, edited and exported everything.
This scene was supposed to show one of the last scenes in my short film
where my dog uses to leash he finds to hook onto the door handle and then
open the door manually.
The reason why I chose this image specifically is that although I decided to
change the overall plot of my film there are still a few scenes that I can still
film despite a change in location e.g., this scene still has the same premise
in both version of my film.
6. This is my fifth image that I took for my film portfolio. This particular scene in
my film was supposed to go as follows; using the leash my dog will pull on it
in order to open the door (this image was supposed to show the before,
meaning showing what happens before that scene occurs).
Despite changing my films entire premise (primarily using a different
location due to issues and making it easier on myself), I still think that this
image relates to what occurs during my short film. The only difference being
the locations used. I think that this shot could still be used in my film but in a
different way e.g., I could start off my film (or at some point in the film before
he goes to grab his leash and escape) with a close up shot of my dog as he
looks at the door. This would allow me to use what I had planned in my
portfolio, even if it wasn’t what I originally intended.
This is my sixth image taken for my film portfolio. This scene is similar to the
previous image, instead it it a close up image of the leash rather than
including my dog.
The reason as to why I took this image is that because in my film I not only
want to film a scene where you’re able to see the door being opened by the
leash but also a close up shot of the leash being hooked onto the door
handle and then the door opening. I think that out of all of the images I had
taken for my image portfolio, this is one of the only images that hasn’t been
altered in my newer draft of my film. I think this is because the idea can
work well despite the change in locations and the change in story.
7. This is my seventh image of my film portfolio. The scene occurs toward the
end of the film where my dog finds the leash that he can use to open the
door in the living room. The scene after shows my dog pulling the leash
along to where the door is.
Similar with the previous image, this is one of the only images that
remained the same after I had to alter the overall story of my film. This is
because the only use for this scene is for my dog to drag the leash toward
the door which will then cut to it being hooked onto the door handle (after
experimenting with my dog to see if he could actually drag the leash
himself, I found that it was too difficult and instead had to drag it myself. I
then placed my dogs paw onto the leash afterward to help indicate the he
was one that had dragged it).
This is my eighth and final image for my film portfolio. Unlike all of the
previous photos, which only include my main actor, this image is one of
myself for a scene that I had decided to add during my experiments.
Originally I wanted the door to appear as if it closed on it’s own during the
film i.e., place the camera in front of the door and then close it from the
other side myself. However after mutliple takes during my experiments I
found that the idea didn’t work and I was clearly able to see myself during
the scenes after looking back at footage. It was then when I came up with
the idea of adding an additional scene of myself, from outside the living
room, shutting the door.
