WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?

Christina
OUR AUDIENCE
 During our planning one of the most vital aspects that we had
to do was to identify who primary and secondary target
audience are for our film. It’s important to research our target
audience to make sure we have enough viewers so the film
could make money back and our investments are successful.
We had to take many things into consideration such as the
age range, their social grading gender system, what social
grade they would be and what their interests would be. By
knowing these we could add in specific conventions to target
these groups and make the film appeal to them. Within our
group we discussed what classification our film would get by
the BBFC and we concluded that the suitable age range
would be 15 years old would be suitable due to some mild
violence that could be associated with the genre of crime.
OUR AUDIENCE
Our target audience would be:
 Age- 15 – 25
 Gender- Male
 Socio-Economic Scale- C1 + C2
 Their interests could include – New trends,
technology and making their selves better
individuals, upcoming films (mystery).
OUR AUDIENCE
 After research we have found out that our primary audience
would be males, this is because stereotypically they are more
likely to enjoy violent and brutal films as this genre will appeal
to them much more than females, as they would enjoy the plot
and suspense of the film. Another reason that our film will
appeal to a male audience much more is due to one of the
lead roles being a female actor, as our lead female role is
presented as a typical glamorous female. A male based
audience are also more common and familiar with crime films;
the idea of the plot is more appealing to them and can have a
common narrative in which they can engage with. Males also
enjoy hobbies such as video games where common themes
like murder are often shown.
OUR AUDIENCE
 We have chosen this particular age range as we
have all agreed that some of the scenes will not be
suitable for an audience younger than 15 year olds,
we have stopped our age range at 25 as after
various group discussion we have all agreed that
our film would lack intrest in an audience older than
25 . This age range is quite broad which is
beneficial for our film as it opens up a bigger target
audience and therefore would create more interest
in the film. The age range is also revolved around
technology, so one of the most effective methods of
advertisement would be social media such as,
Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
OUR AUDIENCE
 One of the benefits of social media is that it is
below the line advertising and therefore free
meaning that it doesn’t cost us and it targets the
appropriate target audience, this would be
beneficial for us as it will enable us to spend the
money of other various things instead of marketing
and promotion. This would allow our audience to
actively engage with the film and contribute to its
success. This age range is a large demographic
which means that there could be more potential
buyers for our film.
OUR AUDIENCE
 The social grade of our target audience of our film will
be class D and C1 and C2; we have chosen this class
range as those members of the society will still be in
education and therefore this film will be of a bigger
interest to them as opposed to the older half of this
audience would be at the start of their careers. They
would often be entering a high skilled job market which
will allow them to engage in opportunities which will
mean they will have lots of disposable income. This part
of the target audience are more likely to have gained a
degree and have established their social status and
security in life. Due to this particular age range they
would be sociable people and enjoy going out and
meeting friends. They would be more likely to keep up
with fashion and new upcoming technologies.
OUR AUDIENCE
 A common hobby for this target audience would be
enjoying a secure lifestyle and going to the cinema
and seeing new releases or streaming new
versions of films as they come out. This social
group are very entertainment literate; as we often
see them going to the cinema, use the internet,
watch TV and keep up to date with new releases.
This would mean that there will always be constant
arising marketing opportunities in this target
audience as social meetings are common so
outings like this are available.
OUR AUDIENCE: SOCIAL GRADING
OUR AUDIENCE
 The interest of our target audience is very important as
depending of the category they fall into this will help us
determine whether they would possibly like the film, as
not all 15- 25 year olds will be interested in crime and
violence. However people who would watch our film
would be part of a niche audience; they are a selective
group of people who enjoy particular genres of films and
do not conform to mainstream expectations. This is the
type of audience for our film as crime action does not
appeal to everyone. According to Young and Rubicam’s
cross-cultural consumer methods they would be an
aspirer. This means that they would be interested in new
technologies and trends and would be constantly trying
to improve themselves.
OUR AUDIENCE
 Individuals within this target audience commonly buy
smart, high tech and high fashion goods which can help
with the idea of superiority in personal opinion for them.
As they have this aspirer personality trait it means that
they always want to be kept on their feet and engaged in
new concepts. Looking at the Maslow’s hierarchy of
needs one of the main reasons that our target audience
would watch our film would be for self-actualization and
esteem needs as this would give them acceptance of
themselves and experience their meaning and purpose,
as well as giving them confidence, it is important that
we as a group are aware of the needs of our audience
as therefore we can do everything to meet their needs
and expectations of our film.
OUR AUDIENCE
 This audience would watch our media product for
personal purposes and according to Blulmers uses and
gratifications theory their main reason for watching our
crime film would be for diversion and personal
relationships. The film would diverse them from
everyday life and be a form of relaxation and
entertainment. It’ll give them something to engage with
and can give them satisfaction due to learning new
things and becoming more knowledgeable throughout
the film. Personal relationships may be invented through
the audience watching this film as the audience can
become involved in the social lives of the other
characters and see the range of behaviours which are
common in a situation such as a crime.
OUR AUDIENCE
 Our target audience would be engaged in this and would
be able to emphasize with the characters and learn the
dynamics of interaction; the fact that the film is crime
allows them to be ‘kept on their feet’ and as they are
intrigued in self-importance it can allow comparison
between personal lives to make them feel esteemed.
According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the target
audience may also watch this for their safety needs and
esteem. This could be because they can relate to some
of the characters presented in our crime film and
therefore they can look into their lives and see how they
have dealt with the situation that they have been in
before.
OUR AUDIENCE
OUR AUDIENCE
 The film focuses on a crime and throughout has a
unsecure and eerie feeling which hints danger and
uncertainty. The target audience like to know what they
are doing and have clear goals and always want to
aspire to do more; this film can intrigue them due to the
fact they seem out of their comfort zone and are put on
edge. After watching it they can see that they have a
strong sense of safety and protection from harm in
comparison to the film and can feel a sense of security.
They may also feel esteemed by watching it is it allows
the audience to compare their current situation to the
characters which can give them a strong sense of self-
worth and have confidence in their lifestyle which links
back to the idea of wanting a higher status.
OUR AUDIENCE
 The second target audience that we have identified
would most likely be middle aged women aged 25- 40
who show and have an interest in crime and drama. We
have decided on this secondary target audience as we
think it is most suitable as some women do like violence
and crime but we think that older women who show less
fear would be more suited to this film, instead of
squeamish middle aged women. This would still be
continued to a niche selection of women as it doesn’t
target all of them as a whole. Our audience would
consist of some females that may have personal
preferences to crime. Crime films are usually
stereotyped as being a male audience but we aim to
challenge this and try to get both genders on board.
OUR AUDIENCE
 Gender – female
 Age - 25 - 40
 Social grade – C2 - B
 Interests - crime, internet and drama
 The social grade of this secondary audience is slightly higher
than the primary T.A because they are older and have more
experience meaning that they would have higher and more
intermediate occupations with social grades of B- C1/C2.
Women of that social class are likely to have managerial,
administrative and professional jobs and therefore will afford
to go to the cinema and entertain themselves through a
variety of services such as cinemas.
OUR AUDIENCE
 Our secondary target audience is quite niche and specific,
and therefore they are likely to have very specific needs and
wants when it comes to entertainment, therefore it is important
for us to identify some of the needs and expectations they
would have for a crime film and aim to follow them as this
would increase the target audience for our film
 Therefore this means they would have to be really into this
type of films so they could engage with the narrative and enjoy
the plot.
OUR AUDIENCE
 As a group after many discussions we believe that
this would be the most appropriate audience for our
opening sequence; this is due to conventional crime
films and their viewers, market segmentation and
the preferences of this demographic when watching
film.
 In order to meet those criteria of our target
audience we need to identify some of their
expectations of crime films.
OUR AUDIENCE
 For men the expectations of crime films are:
 Violence
 Female role
 Illegal activity
 Diversity of characters

 Female expectations of Crime Films:
 Lead male role
 Interesting plot
 Engaging
 Mystery and suspense
OUR AUDIENCE
 After identifying those expectations of our target
audience it is important that we meet those criteria
as well as we can in order to satisfy the
expectations of our audience.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

OUR AUDIENCE  The interest of our target audience is very important as depending of the category they fall into this will help us determine whether they would possibly like the film, as not all 15- 25 year olds will be interested in crime and violence. However people who would watch our film would be part of a niche audience; they are a selective group of people who enjoy particular genres of films and do not conform to mainstream expectations. This is the type of audience for our film as crime action does not appeal to everyone. According to Young and Rubicam’s cross-cultural consumer methods they would be an aspirer. This means that they would be interested in new technologies and trends and would be constantly trying to improve themselves.
  • 11. OUR AUDIENCE  Individuals within this target audience commonly buy smart, high tech and high fashion goods which can help with the idea of superiority in personal opinion for them. As they have this aspirer personality trait it means that they always want to be kept on their feet and engaged in new concepts. Looking at the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs one of the main reasons that our target audience would watch our film would be for self-actualization and esteem needs as this would give them acceptance of themselves and experience their meaning and purpose, as well as giving them confidence, it is important that we as a group are aware of the needs of our audience as therefore we can do everything to meet their needs and expectations of our film.
  • 12. OUR AUDIENCE  This audience would watch our media product for personal purposes and according to Blulmers uses and gratifications theory their main reason for watching our crime film would be for diversion and personal relationships. The film would diverse them from everyday life and be a form of relaxation and entertainment. It’ll give them something to engage with and can give them satisfaction due to learning new things and becoming more knowledgeable throughout the film. Personal relationships may be invented through the audience watching this film as the audience can become involved in the social lives of the other characters and see the range of behaviours which are common in a situation such as a crime.
  • 13. OUR AUDIENCE  Our target audience would be engaged in this and would be able to emphasize with the characters and learn the dynamics of interaction; the fact that the film is crime allows them to be ‘kept on their feet’ and as they are intrigued in self-importance it can allow comparison between personal lives to make them feel esteemed. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the target audience may also watch this for their safety needs and esteem. This could be because they can relate to some of the characters presented in our crime film and therefore they can look into their lives and see how they have dealt with the situation that they have been in before.
  • 15. OUR AUDIENCE  The film focuses on a crime and throughout has a unsecure and eerie feeling which hints danger and uncertainty. The target audience like to know what they are doing and have clear goals and always want to aspire to do more; this film can intrigue them due to the fact they seem out of their comfort zone and are put on edge. After watching it they can see that they have a strong sense of safety and protection from harm in comparison to the film and can feel a sense of security. They may also feel esteemed by watching it is it allows the audience to compare their current situation to the characters which can give them a strong sense of self- worth and have confidence in their lifestyle which links back to the idea of wanting a higher status.
  • 16. OUR AUDIENCE  The second target audience that we have identified would most likely be middle aged women aged 25- 40 who show and have an interest in crime and drama. We have decided on this secondary target audience as we think it is most suitable as some women do like violence and crime but we think that older women who show less fear would be more suited to this film, instead of squeamish middle aged women. This would still be continued to a niche selection of women as it doesn’t target all of them as a whole. Our audience would consist of some females that may have personal preferences to crime. Crime films are usually stereotyped as being a male audience but we aim to challenge this and try to get both genders on board.
  • 17. OUR AUDIENCE  Gender – female  Age - 25 - 40  Social grade – C2 - B  Interests - crime, internet and drama  The social grade of this secondary audience is slightly higher than the primary T.A because they are older and have more experience meaning that they would have higher and more intermediate occupations with social grades of B- C1/C2. Women of that social class are likely to have managerial, administrative and professional jobs and therefore will afford to go to the cinema and entertain themselves through a variety of services such as cinemas.
  • 18. OUR AUDIENCE  Our secondary target audience is quite niche and specific, and therefore they are likely to have very specific needs and wants when it comes to entertainment, therefore it is important for us to identify some of the needs and expectations they would have for a crime film and aim to follow them as this would increase the target audience for our film  Therefore this means they would have to be really into this type of films so they could engage with the narrative and enjoy the plot.
  • 19. OUR AUDIENCE  As a group after many discussions we believe that this would be the most appropriate audience for our opening sequence; this is due to conventional crime films and their viewers, market segmentation and the preferences of this demographic when watching film.  In order to meet those criteria of our target audience we need to identify some of their expectations of crime films.
  • 20. OUR AUDIENCE  For men the expectations of crime films are:  Violence  Female role  Illegal activity  Diversity of characters   Female expectations of Crime Films:  Lead male role  Interesting plot  Engaging  Mystery and suspense
  • 21. OUR AUDIENCE  After identifying those expectations of our target audience it is important that we meet those criteria as well as we can in order to satisfy the expectations of our audience.
