3. PUBLIC SECTOR
• Minoru Community Centre, 7191 Granville Ave., Richmond, V6Y 1N9
• Public Sector - This community centre offers different services and program
which include sports/fitness classes, arts, leadership programs, community
events, an other specific programs which are available to the public. All of
these things offered by the community centre “enhance the quality of life and
well being of citizens” (Lunn, 2020, p.3).
• I think that this is example would be related to recreation and physical
activity. A community centre should “act as a catalyst for recreation
development in the community” (Lunn, 2020, p.5) while still promoting
healthy living styles and physical activity for all. Through the various choices
of program that are offered, it would be safe to say that the general needs of
the public and the individual interests that some people have are being
served through this for the whole community.
4. PUBLIC SECTOR
• West Richmond Pitch and Putt, 9751 Pendleton Rd, Richmond, BC V7E
4M1
• Public Sector - This golf course is funded through the municipal government
since it is part of the city and provides a leisurely and fun activity that is
friendly to all while still promoting active living.
• This example would be recreation related because since this is funded
through the municipal government, “ the level of recreation needs of the
general public are directly addressed through the offering of recreation
services” (Lunn, 2020, p.5). Having these types of recreational activities that
involve some sort of physical exercise or activity really focuses on the needs
of the participants and the community. Since it is part of the city of
Richmond, lots of the money given to this course helps with the
improvements that provide a more enjoyable experience.
5. PUBLIC SECTOR
• Garry Point Park, 12011 Seventh Ave, Richmond, BC V7E 4X2
• Public Sector - Parks within the community allow for individuals to choose
what they feel like doing while attending, which provides opportunities which
are “deemed valuable by society” (Lunn, 2020, p.3).
• This is a recreation example because it states that recreation is a
“fundamental human need” that spans over every person no matter the age
and “is essential to a person’s physical and social well-being and to overall
quality of life” (Lunn, 2020, p.5). Given that this park provides lots of open
space and different recreational opportunities for all of those in the
community, funding of this park goes through the city, which helps maintain
the overall condition and structures of different parts of this park. The focus
point that this brings into light is that Garry Point Park “promotes the
preservation, protection and enjoyment of natural resources” (Lunn, 2020,
p.5)
6. PRIVATE/COMMERCIAL SECTOR
• Richmond Country Club Tennis, 9100 Steveston Hwy, Richmond, BC V7A
1M5
• Private Sector - Richmond Country Club is a private organization that is not
open to everyone, but only to those who are part of the organization itself.
This is deemed to be a “Club” which is one of the three types of commercial
recreation (Lunn, 2020, p.6).
• The Country Club is an example of a private/commercial sector because this
type of service (clubs) identifies the “business opportunity for leisure and
recreation and has recognized the need for innovative leisure and recreation
goods, supplies, and services” (Lunn, 2020, p.6) which in this case would be
the services they do provide. I would say that this connection with 2210
material classifies this to be more of a recreational relation since the country
club does provide lots of different activities and sports for the private
individuals to partake in, while still paying to the private business which
helps them fund for whatever parts of the organization need to be improved
or maintained.
7. PRIVATE/COMMERCIAL SECTOR
• Oxygen Yoga & Fitness, 10151 No. 3 Rd #112, Richmond, BC V7A 4R6
• Private Sector - Oxygen Yoga Fitness is a business that provides a
recreational physical activity for people to participate in which can be
classified as “leisure services” and “indoor commercial recreation” (Lunn,
2020, p.6) since they provide their services within a building.
• This is a recreation example because the service that this provides allows
many people to enjoy and participate in a leisurely activity that presents a
healthy living lifestyle to all who join. This specifically is defined as
“recreation for which the consumer pays, and for which the supplier expects
to make a profit” (MacLean, Peterson, & Martin, 1985, p.220, as cited in
Karlis, 2011, p.79, as cited in Lunn, 2020, p.6). So those who take part in the
classes this organization offers provide the funding that is used towards the
classes that are being offered through Oxygen Yoga and create more
opportunities and classes.
8. PRIVATE/COMMERCIAL SECTOR
• Lucky 9 Lanes (Bowling), 150-14200 Entertainment Blvd, Richmond, BC
V6W 1A8
• Private Sector - Lucky 9 Lanes offers a “unique service” (Lunn, 2020, p.8)
which is a leisurely activity that is open to all who choose to participate in,
while capitalizing on the business opportunity of the public by charging
individuals that want to engage in the activity.
• This is an example of recreation, due to the leisurely activity that individuals
can participate in and this “increases recreation opportunities for residents”
(Lunn, 2020, p.7). The service that is provided by this organization is one
which is mostly unique and the only place in the city which provides such an
activity, thus increasing the “attraction of outside capital” as well. (Lunn,
2020, p.7) and using the funds which go towards the maintenance of the
facility and for any improvements that need to be made.
9. VOLUNTARY SECTOR
• Richmond Centre for Disability, 5300 No. 3 Rd Unit 842, Richmond, BC V6X
2X9
• Voluntary Sector - Centres which provide assistance for those with
disabilities while being a non-profit organization has a service that “is
operated primarily by volunteers” (Lunn, 2020, p.8). These are good for the
society and the community by helping those in need who may have no
where else to go to.
• This is a recreation example because this organization provides lots of
different activities and courses that are deemed beneficial to society and can
help lots of people in the community. Since it states that the term non-profit
can be used interchangeably for voluntary and recreation organizations, it
seems that though that this has been studied from different academic
fields/disciplines (Lunn, 2020, p.8). This specific organization is classified as
“community” within the 4 broad non-profit categories discussed through the
material, which also seems to be the largest of the 4 categories as well.
10. VOLUNTARY SECTOR
• Richmond FC (soccer organization), 4038 Francis Rd, Richmond, BC
V7C 1J9
• Voluntary Sector - sports organizations that are held within a city
provide opportunities for the individuals in the community with a
chance for physical activity and also “engage/target specific age
cohorts” (Lunn, 2020, p.10).
• This is an example of coaching as well as physical education. This
sports organization provides a service which depends on volunteers in
the community who are able to take the time and give back to their
community, stating in the material that “the voluntary sector is the area
of service that has the closest ties to local communities” (Lunn, 2020,
p.8), and these volunteers are the coaches and assistants who
11. VOLUNTARY SECTOR
• Developmental Disabilities Association, 3851 Shell Rd unit 100, Richmond,
BC V6X 2W2
• Voluntary Sector - Organizations which aid in those with disabilities provide
a service which is mainly funded through the government and “rely on the
efforts of members and volunteers for sustained survival” (Lunn, 2020, p.10).
• This is an example of physical education as well as recreation, due to the
fact that this organization provides numerous opportunities which include
physical activities/sports and other leisurely programs. Due to the accord
established by the government and the voluntary sector in 2001, it “brings
together the public and voluntary sectors to form collaborative relationships”,
and the voluntary/non-profit sector is recognized as “critically important for
addressing the needs of society, including leisure and recreation” (Lunn,
2020, p.10). Meaning that in the future, these needs which are established
through the communities all over Canada will continue to grow and increase
in the future, making these types of organization extremely important to the
population.
