3. Unwin Park
Address: 13313 68 Avenue,
Surrey, BC
Service Sector: Public
Unwin Park is a space that is open to the whole community for “the
communal good of society – enhancing the quality of life and well-
being of citizens” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 3). Anyone can come to this park
and access all recreation services that it offers at no cost. Every
amenity is free. This means that all people including “the poor,
[and] persons with physical or mental disabilities” have
opportunities for recreation (Lunn, 2021, pg. 3). This park is funded
by the municipal government (City of Surrey) through taxpayer
money and occasional funding or sponsorships from businesses.
Connection to SPSC 2210: Recreation
Unwin parks offers a variety of recreation opportunities for all members
of the community. It includes a pool and water park that are open during
the summer months, a playground, basketball court, multiple ball hockey
rinks, baseball diamonds, and a large grass area where you can play
anything you like at anytime! This addresses the recreation needs of the
general public and helps improve the mental, physical, and emotional
well being of the community which are all benefits of engaging in
recreational activities (Lunn, 2021).
Coaching
A coaching connection can also be made as Unwin Park is the home
field of the Newton Canadian Baseball Association. On a summer day,
you can walk through the park and see community coaches working
with children of a variety of ages and skill levels. These coaches
develop athletes by teaching them sport specific skills and movement
skills by developing and planning practices to facilitate improvement.

community at a low (subsidized) cost and some programs are even
offered for free such as free family swim nights or drop in youth

5. Panorama Ridge Secondary School
Address: 13220 64 Avenue, Surrey, BC
Service Sector: Public
Panorama Ridge Secondary is a public school that is open for
youth in the community at no cost. It is government funded
and exists to provide education for our youth which helps
create leaders and responsible members of society. Schools
exist for “the communal good of society” which is one of the
most important factors of the public sector (Lunn, 2021, pg. 3).
Public schools provide access to education for all, regardless of
wealth, health status, or disability (Lunn, 2021).
Connection to SPSC 2210: Physical Education
School is somewhere we go to receive an education. It is where we
learn skills that will help us grow and improve. We specifically
receive physical education in schools. We are taught fundamental
movement skills, we learn how to play sports, and we learn about
and develop our physical literacy. We are taught the importance of
physical activity and “maintaining a healthy lifestyle” (Lunn, 2021,
pg. 3). These are skills that will help us throughout our lives and
contribute to our overall health and well being.

7. Club 16 Trevor Linden Fitness Newton
Address: 6899 King George Blvd, Surrey, BC
Service Sector: Commercial
Club 16 is a business and fitness club that “has recognized the need for innovative leisure … and services”
within the community (Lunn, 2021, pg. 6). The facility provides its members access to a gym where they can
engage in physical activity for recreation purposes. They also offer personal training and other amenities such
as tanning beds and massage chairs. Members pay an extra cost for these services in addition to the regular
membership and Club 16 makes a great profit as a result. This facility and the Club 16 corporation offer services
that provide benefits for the greater good of society through health and fitness. However, their primary goal is
to generate revenue and make a profit and this is what makes Club 16 a part of the commercial sector (Lunn,
2021). They also use advertising to get more members to join their gym which is how they make more money.
Connection to SPSC 2210: Recreation
Club 16 can be classified as an “indoor commercial recreation” service (Lunn, 2021, pg. 6). Club 16 provides a
safe space for individuals to improve their overall health and well being through physical activity that they
enjoy doing. It is a community and member focused environment where people of all ages and backgrounds
are welcomed and supported. They provide services such as group classes where you can socialize and connect
with others while getting your workout in. This leads to improvements in overall mental, physical, and social
health of its members. It doesn’t matter if your goal is to lose 20 lbs or you just workout for fun and enjoyment;
Club 16 has something to benefit everyone.
Physical Education
It connects with physical education because of the personal training that is offered at the facility. I worked at
this gym as a personal trainer for over two years and worked with a diverse population, including immigrants
who have never been taught fundamental movement skills and had poor physical literacy. I worked with these
members to develop their competence and knowledge of basic movements while promoting an active and
healthy lifestyle.

8. Hollywood 3 Cinema
Address: 7125 138 St, Surrey, BC
Service Sector: Commercial
Hollywood 3 Cinemas falls under entertainment services which is one of
the “five categories of commercial recreation services” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 6).
It is open for the general public. There is a cost involved for consumers to
be able to watch a movie at the cinema as well as extra costs for buying
other desirable products and services such as concession items that include
popcorn, drinks and other food. Reclining seats and 3D movies are some
other additional costs that a consumer would pay if they wanted those
specific services. The cinema makes a large profit from these services that
are highly desirable and demanded, which is a key factor for commercial
recreation (Lunn, 2021).
Connection to SPSC 2210: Recreation
Many people enjoy watching movies in their free time and this
cinema provides a unique and comfortable experience for its
consumers to do so. They show a variety of movies so there is
something for all ages and interests. The movies can be enjoyed solo
or also in a social setting. You can enjoy the cinema with your family,
with your friends, or go on a date with your significant other!
Recreation is something we all need and it is essential for our “overall
quality of life” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 5). This facility provides a break from
our busy work and school lives where we can go and relax.

9. Dell Lanes
Address: 10576 King George Blvd, Surrey, BC
Service Sector: Commercial
Dell Lanes is a local bowling alley in my community that provides a fun,
active, and social environment for all ages. It is a privately owned facility
that is open for the general public or “anyone who can afford the
service” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 7). Dell Lanes makes a profit through the
revenue they receive from all the services they offer. Other than regular
bowling, they also offer laser bowling, restaurant quality food and drinks,
and parties. These services come at additional costs for the consumers
but are highly desirable and “based on demand” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 6).
Connection to SPSC 2210: Recreation
Dell Lanes has taken advantage of “business opportunities of leisure
and recreation” because bowling has become a popular leisure
activity that many enjoy (Lunn, 2021, pg. 6). It makes a great
connection with recreation as it is an active form of entertainment
and also a sport that people can play competitively. This bowling alley
is a place that the whole family can enjoy. They have bumper bowling
lanes for kids and nightclub themed laser bowling for the older
population. They also have leagues and tournaments for those that
enjoy some recreational competitiveness. Overall, this facility
provides fun recreation services that provide several benefits for its
diverse consumers.

11. Akal FC
Akal FC
Service Sector: Voluntary
Akal Football Club is a local soccer club in my community that is run
completely by volunteer coaches like my dad. They commit hundreds of
hours of their valuable time without receiving a single penny in return. Akal
FC aligns with “the five key features of non-profit organizations” (Lunn, 2021,
pg. 8). It is “organized, private, non-profit distributing, self-governing, and
voluntary” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 8). Participants pay a registration fee to join
which then gets used to provide uniforms, balls, and equipment for the kids.
It is a club that promotes and values the physical, mental, and social health
of our youth which is “good for society/community” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 8).
Connection to SPSC 2210: Coaching
There are about 30 coaches that volunteer with Akal FC. These coaches work
with children and youth from the ages of 4-18, providing a safe, inclusive,
and fun environment for them to learn the sport of soccer. They help kids
develop and improve their fitness levels and basic skills such as coordination,
balance, and agility. They plan practices and set goals and schedules for
teams as well. These coaches have all completed a criminal record check and
have taken some kind of coaching course.

Recreation
This soccer club also relates to recreation as it provides fun and enjoyment for kids
who love to play soccer. It also allows them to make new friends through play!
12. Kids Play
Service Sector: Voluntary
Kids Play is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. They “rely on the efforts of
members and volunteers for sustained survival” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 10). I volunteer for
this organization as well. The goal of Kids Play is to create young leaders by getting
them involved in sports and other recreational activities. They organize sports events,
tournaments, camps, and forums to keep youth engaged in a positive way. They receive
donations and sponsorships from various organizations such as the Vancouver
Whitecaps. They also hold fundraisers as well. Youth of all ages and diverse
backgrounds are welcome to take part in any service offered by Kids Play at no cost.
Voluntary organizations such as Kids Play are “now recognized as critically important for
addressing the needs of society, including leisure and recreation” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 10).
Address: All throughout Surrey, BC at various locations.
Connection to SPSC 2210: Recreation
This foundation connects to recreation in many ways. They provide numerous recreational
activities for youth to participate in and it is free of cost for all. They provide a safe and
fun environment where kids can play and make new friends. They host camps where the
focus is on games, sports, and play. Youth from all over Surrey can benefit from Kids Play.
Coaching
Many of the Kids Play volunteers are also coaches in the community. They bring
their coaching skills into Kids Play sports camps where youth learn and play a
variety of sports. Coaches help facilitate learning by planning and delivering
sport based activities and lessons in camps. They help kids learn fundamental
movement skills and teach them important values such as teamwork. They also
help develop confidence and the 4 C’S in kids.

13. R.E.C for Kids Society
Address: 13379 68 Avenue, Surrey, BC
Service Sector: Voluntary
R.E.C for Kids Society is a non-profit organization that provides sports and recreational
equipment for kids in need. They make it possible for the disadvantaged to participate in
sports and stay active. It is run by a group of volunteers, and they receive sports equipment
through donations from the community. They also hold fundraising events and collection
drives. This organization is located in front of my house, and I have donated my bikes here
as well. They have formed “collaborative relationships” with many community partners who
help them by making sure that this equipment actually goes to kids in need. This service is
“good for select populations” and benefits society as a whole because it helps youth engage
in physical activity (Lunn, 2021, pg. 8). All these factors place R.E.C for Kids Society into the
voluntary/non-profit service sector.

(used, donated bikes that are in good condition)
Connection to SPSC 2210: Recreation
This organization directly facilitates more youth involvement in
recreational activities by providing a variety of equipment for those in
need. A child might be hesitant to play outside because they don’t have a
ball like the other kids do. This foundation prevents that from happening
by providing those kids the sports equipment they need to be active and
be able to play their sport of choice. This helps develop healthier and
happier youth which is “good for society” (Lunn, 2021, pg. 8). (the R.E.C for Kids Society facility and delivery van)
