3. WHY IS IT
PUBLIC?
Sungod recreation center is considered to
part of the public sector because “…[it
provides] recreation that because of its
nature continually reinforces values and
ideals of establishing and maintaining a
healthy lifestyle to the user” (Lunn, 2020,
pg. 3) It is also considered to be part of the
public sector because anyone can use the
facilities at a minimal cost and people are
not required to have a membership to use
the facilities. Some of the activities that
sungod provides is swimming, ice skating,
gym, summer programs, swimming lessons,
etc

CONSIDERED
TO BE
RECREATION
& PHYSICAL
EDUCATION?
Sungod recreation center is considered to be both
recreation and physical education. It’s considered to be
recreation because “… the municipal level of government
is the level in which the recreation needs of the general
public are directly addressed through the offering of
recreation services” (Lunn, 2020, p. 4).
Sungod is considered to be physical education as well
because it provides activities that allow people to be
physically active. It’s also considered to be meant for
physical education because people are able to “…[learn]
about [their] body…through some sort of physical
activity or human movement” (Ozlins et al, 2013). By
getting physically active people are able to get their
heart rate up, get the blood pumping and sweat, which
are all great for the human body.

6. WHY IS IT
PUBLIC?
Seaquam Secondary is considered to be part of
the public sector because they are
“…administered and funded by the local, state or
national government” (Advisor, 2018). Seaquam
Secondary is also considered to be public because
any child from grades 8-12 are able to go to
school there as long as they are in the catchment.
Lastly it is also public because there is no cost to
attend and learn unlike a private (commercial)
sector.

Seaquam Secondary is considered to be physical
education and not recreation because the school
“[provides] services such as “fitness, sport, age-
related programs, events, arts, leadership, etc.”
that are deemed a “public good” (Lunn, 2020, p.
3)”. For instance, at Seaquam all grades and
students from 8-11 must take a physical
education course which is all year since the
courses are all year and not just semesters.
Seaquam is also known for all of their academy’s
and sport teams that are extra curriculars. Some of
those include volleyball, rugby basketball, golf
academy, softball academy, etc.

9. WHY
IS IT

North Delta recreation center is also considered to be
public because just like Seaquam the recreation center
“[provides] services such as “fitness, sport, age-
related programs, events, arts, leadership, etc.” that
are deemed a “public good” (Lunn, 2020, p. 3)”. Some
of the activities that North Delta recreation center
provides for the public is outdoor swimming during
the Summer, gyms for basketball, fitness center, etc.
North Delta rec center is also considered to be part of
the public sector because anyone can use the facilities
at a minimal cost and people are not required to have
a membership to use the facilities.

North Delta recreation center is similar to Sungod in the
way that they are both recreation centers but have
slightly different activities and are located in 2 different
areas arund Delta.
North Delta recreation center is considered to be both
recreation and physical education. It’s considered to be
recreation because “… the municipal level of

North Delta recreation center is considered to be
physical education because they offer many different
sports, and ”sport, though it can be, is not a solitary
activity, but involves others and hence is an
opportunity for feelings of solidarity with others, the
type of feelings that can develop into friendship”
(Ozlins, 2013). It’s also considered to be meant for
physical education because people are able to “…[learn]
about [their] body…through some sort of physical

12. WHY IS IS PRIVATE
(COMMERCIAL)?
Delta Christian is considered to be part of the
the private (commercial) sector because it is
“…funded wholly or partly by…tuition and
administered by a private body” (Ozlins, 2013).
Unlike the public sector, the private
(commercial) sector requires people to pay to
attend, and not just any child is able to attend
even if it is in their catchment. Part of the
private commercial sector also requires the
kids to dress and act a specific way unlike the
public sectors.

13. WHY IS IT
CONSIDERED
TO BE
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION?
Delta Christian is considered to be physical
education because it offers and “[provides]
services such as “fitness, sport, age-related
programs, events, arts, leadership, etc.” that
are deemed a “public good” (Lunn, 2020, p. 3)”
For instance, kindergarten-grade 7 kids all
participate in a certain amount of hours of
physical activity a week in a gym class. They
also get 2 breaks throughout the day (recess
and lunch) which allows the kids to be
physically active outside on the playground.
This also allows the kids to be doing
sports/physical activity while having social
interactions and socializing with other kids.

Scouts Canada is a non-profit (volunteer)
organization because it’s a “voluntary leisure and
recreation organization...[as it has] been studied
from different academic fields or disciplines”
(Lunn, 2020, p. 8). Scouts Canada is also an
“…area of service that has the closest ties to
local communities, as organizations in this
sector are operated primarily by volunteers”
(Lunn, 2020, p.8). For instance, all of the
Scouters (leaders) are volunteers and do not get
paid for the hours they put in, to making a great
program for the kids. There are groups all over
the world and work within the community to get
kids to join the Scout program. The nice thing
about Scouts Canada is that they also have a
program called “no one left behind” which allows
kids who cannot afford the cost of Scouting to be
able to join and experience scouting. Finally, it is
considered to be a non-profit organization
because “it focus[s] on fundraising” (Lunn, 2020,

Scouts Canada is considered to be part of recreation
because “recreation [is when] the consumer pays
and for which the supplier expects to make a profit”
(MacLean, Peterson, & Martin, 1985, p. 220, as cited
in Karlis, 2011, p. 79). Scouts Canada is part of 2 of
the 3 types of commercial recreation and those 2
are “outdoor commercial recreation, and indoor
commercial recreation” (Lunn, 2020, p.6). It is
considered to be both indoor and outdoor because
some of the meetings happen inside and some
happen outside like camping. Another reason in
which Scouts Canada is considered to be recreation
is because it is an activity for kids aged 5-26 for
leisure and enjoyment. Scouting gives kids the
opportunity to do activities and learn things that
they may not get to do otherwise. For instance, our
group did discover scuba and we all got our open
water diver certificate (max depth of 60 ft), we get
to do jamboree’s and so much more.

SCOUTIN

Scouting was founded in 1907 by a man name Lord Baden
Powell in England. It first started off being just for boys but
in 1972 girls were allowed to join Scouts Canada and from
there it has been co-ed. However in the United States (US)
they are still known as boy scouts of America as girls are
not allowed in the program.

Beavers: 5-7 year olds
Cubs: 8-10 year olds
Scouts: 11-14 year olds
Ventures: 15-17 year olds
Rovers: 18-26 year olds
Scouters (leaders): 18+
Cost
$260-$300 depending on the group as Scouts Canada has
a set fee and then each group adds on a minimal cost to
help cover gear and equipment for camping and activities.

(VOLUNTEER)
Youth Bowling of Canada is considered a non-
profit (volunteer) organization because “…[it is]
organized, private, non-profit distributing, self-
governing, and voluntary (Lunn, 2020, p.8). It is
also considered volunteer, because all of the
instructors (also known as Master bowlers) who
are helping the kids are doing it as volunteers
and are not getting paid to be there and to help
out the kids. “As a result, the voluntary
sector…is now recognized as critically important
for addressing the needs of society, including
leisure and recreation” (Lunn, 2020, p.8). This
relates back to the youth bowling of Canada
(YBC) league because the kids are getting the
opportunity to participate in recreation and
physical education while socializing and
interacting with other kids. This organization is
run by the bowling lanes for profit, but run the

COACHING
Youth Bowling of Canada (YBC) is considered to be
related to coaching because as the kids are bowling,
they are getting coached by coaches (also known as
Master YBC bowlers). Their job is to teach and correct
bowling habits and techniques to better the kids
bowling, in hopes for the kids to become better
bowlers. At the beginning of the season they will also
show how to properly bowl either one handed or two
handed (granny style). Throughout the season the
coaches will help to coach both on and off the lanes.
For instance, when I was bowling in the YBC league
there would be times where I was not in the middle, so
the coach that was assigned with the lane for that day
would watch to see what I am doing and then give me
tips or advice on how to correct that like don’t drop the
should, bend over, etc.

**The cost includes games every week, shoe rental, any
tournaments that occur during the season, trophy’s and
end of the season party/lunch with trophy’s**
Bowling happens every week (Saturday) at 9:00am or
11:00am

Brit Lions, just like YBC bowling and Scouting is also a
non-profit organization. They are considered a non-
profit organization because it is run completely by
volunteers including the coaches. The Brit Lion rugby
club is also considered non-profit because it runs on
“memberships & donations; [by] user fees
&fundraising…” (Lunn, 2020, p.9) This means that the
players have to pay a fee for the season so that the
club can pay for uptake of the field, the buildings and
the gear/equipment.

& PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
Brit Lions rugby club is considered to be physical
education because not only is it getting the players
to do exercise, but it is also creating an
environment that is inclusive and fun, all while
doing the drills and learning rugby. It is also
physical education because the players are able to
“…[learn] about [their] body…through some sort of
physical activity or human movement” (Ozlins et al,
2013).
Brit Lions is also considered to be coaching
because the club has trained coaches that have all
of the necessary training (NCCP, first aid, etc).
These coaches are all volunteers that make lesson
plans and practices each week for the players. The
coaches are also there to help make sure that the
players are playing safely and properly while
