3. Maple Ridge
Leisure Centre
• Address: 11925 Haney Place Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Public
Leisure centres provide “opportunities for
recreation to disadvantaged clients” and allow for
users of the municipality to “maintai[n] a healthy
lifestyle” (Lunn, 2021, p.3). It is public because it
serves the general public and provides free or
subsidized programs for users depending on
affiliation with non-profit groups and individual
income.
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation
This is an example of recreation due to it serving
the “general public” of the city of Maple Ridge at a
municipally subsidized rate (Lunn, 2021, p. 3). This
leisure centre includes a pool, a fitness centre, a
gymnasium and together these services provide
numerous recreational opportunities and “act as a
catalyst for recreation development in the
community” (Lunn, 2021, p. 5).

4. Samuel Robertson Technical School
• Address: 10445 245 street Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Public
Samuel Robertson Technical School provides free education
for British Columbian youth in grades 8-12. This is free due
to the provincial government establishing a certain amount
of funding for public education annually and the universal
ideal that education is a “necessary service” (Lunn, 2021,
p.3).
SPSC 2210 Connection: Physical Education.
This is an example of physical education as physical
education courses are offered from grade 8-12. Further,
weight training classes are amongst other initiatives to
improve physical literacy for students at Samuel Robertson
Technical School.
Additionally, the school also offers recreation in the form of
drama, music, and sports clubs to their students. Further,
there are amenities on the property that serve both public
students and the general public such as a basketball court
and a turf field. These recreation and physical education
services are provided to all regardless of “gender, age
group, or ethnic group” complying with the Charter of
Rights and Freedoms and serving the needs of the entire
community (Lunn, 2021, p. 5).

5. Albion Sports Complex
• Address: 23778 104 avenue, Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Public
Albion Sports Complex provides recreation opportunities through
its numerous features, including a baseball diamond, a football
field, open green space, free parking, a soccer field, a spray park,
washrooms, bleacher seating, drinking water, and wheelchair
accessibility. These are funded through municipally gathered funds
via taxation.
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation and Coaching.
This facility provides recreational and coaching opportunities to
the city of Maple Ridge and serves many non-for-profit service
groups. The inclusion of the numerous sporting fields, green space,
and wheelchair accessibility ensure that this facility “serve[s] the
need of the total community” (Lunn, 2021, p.5). Further, this
municipally governed park provides “affordable and quality
recreation programs” ensuring a “broa[d] range of recreation
opportunities for every individual and group” (Lunn, 2021, p. 5-6).

7. • Address: 22420 Dewdney Trunk Rd, Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Commercial
Club 16 is a commercial business because users pay to use the
facility for recreation and the business operates to make a
profit (MacLean, Peterson, & Martin, 1985, p. 220, as cited in
Lunn, 2021).
2210 Connection: Recreation.
Club 16 is a gym providing customers with an opportunity to take part
in an “indoor commercial recreation,” one of the three types of local
commercial recreation (Lunn, 2021, p. 6). In line with what Lunn (2021)
suggests are core tenets of commercial recreation, Club 16 provides
“quality products and services” at “competitive and affordable” prices
(p. 8). In the Maple Ridge Club 16 a decal stating “Judgement Free
Zone” is firmly placed on a blank wall for all to see. This demonstrates
the gyms desire to serve the public and provide “good of some kind,” a
characteristic that defines commercial sector recreation (Lunn, 2021, p.
6).

8. Wayland Sports
• Address: 20110 Stewart Crescent, Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Commercial
Wayland sports is a commercial indoor Gymnastics
gymnasium providing a space for kids and adults to
practice and learn gymnastics. It is very much a
“specialized service” operating for profit,
classifying it as a commercial form of recreation
(Lunn, 2021, p. 6).
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation and
Coaching.
Wayland Sports falls under recreation and
coaching because attendees may seek to practice
gymnastics as a form of leisure and recreation
while others attend for personalized coaching by
Wayland staff members. By way of the numerous
obstacles in the building, participants are
encouraged to play and move in ways they
traditionally would not.

9. WildPlay
• Address: 23485 Fern Crescent, Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Commercial
WildPlay is an outdoor commercial recreation park for all ages
and experiences. The outdoor obstacle course provides the
“need for innovative leisure and recreation [services]” and
seeks to challenge users to become more fearless in their life
(Lunn. 2021, p. 6). Services provided include axe throwing, zip
lining, and adventure courses, amongst others.
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation
WildPlay users attend the Maple Ridge park to recreate by
practicing their climbing, amongst other physical feats, in a
natural environment surrounded by trees.

11. Haney Neptunes Aquatic Club
• Address: 11925 Haney Place, Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Non-Profit
The Haney Neptunes are a swim club in the British Columbia Summer Swimming
Association (BCSSA). While head coaches are paid and team membership
requires fees, the team's executives, assistant coaches and other officials are
volunteers, making it an example of the non-profit sector. Further, the team is
“organized, self-governing, voluntary, private, and non-profit distributing”, in line
with the key features of a non-profit organization (Lunn, 2021, p. 8).
2210 Connection: Recreation and Coaching
It connects to recreation and coaching because the swimmers partake due to
their interest and enjoyment recreating in the sport of swimming. Regarding
coaching, many volunteer coaches are mentored by head coaches before
eventually graduating to paid coaching.
Additionally, the club runs a developmental program where volunteer swimmers
are provided the opportunity to coach young (ages 4-6 years old) swimmers to
swim. I was lucky enough to partake in this program growing up and found the
Hammond development program to be beneficial to learning the fundamentals
of coaching and teaching.

12. Haney Seahorses Swim Club
• Address: 11925 Haney Place, Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Non-Profit
The Haney Seahorses are another non-profit swim club based
in Maple Ridge. They are in the non-profit sector due to their
reliance on volunteers at all organizational positions and due
to their reliance on corporate sponsorships from Swim BC,
Swimming Canada, Maple Ridge Liquor Store, and Fina (Lunn,
2021).
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation and Coaching.
Much like the Neptunes, the Haney Seahorses connect to
recreation and coaching through the utilization of volunteer
coaching and coaching development. Furthermore,
swimmers partake in the club because they enjoy the
therapeutic benefits associated with choosing swimming as a
form of recreation.

13. The Ridge Meadows Senior
Society
• Address:12150 224th street Maple Ridge
• Service Sector: Non-Profit
The Ridge Meadows Senior Society is a registered
charity that was founded in 1999. This non-profit club

classification is the generation of a “formalize[d]…
registered society” (Lunn, 2021, p. 9).
2210 Connection: Recreation.
The Ridge Meadows Senior Society prides itself on
offering numerous recreational opportunities such as
arts and craft drop ins, dance classes, fitness classes,
table tennis, tai chi, yoga, and gardening among other
activities. Evidently it is deeply rooted in providing
recreational services for its members.
