2. Port Moody
Recreation
Center
• Address: 300 Ioco Road, Port Moody, B.C. V3H 2V7
• Service Sector: Public + Private. The Port Moody
recreation center is both public and private its gym,
indoor track, indoor basketball courts, soccer field,
indoor hockey rink and other facilities are open for the
general public with only the gym costing a small fee
that is subsidized. In part it is also private in that
different fitness organizations run classes in spaces they
book in which their costs are profit oriented.
• Connection: Recreation, Coaching, Physical education.
The connections at port moody recreation center can be
drawn to coaching in the form of its field being the
home field for port moody soccer club and its hockey
rink being the home rink for port moody panthers.
Physical education can be seen in the form of the
classes being taught there were individuals can learn
more about fitness and entering that world. Recreation
is present in the form of gym, track, rink and other
facilities which are funded for the most part by the
municipal government and for the general public use,
with the goal being “the provision of recreation
opportunities beyond those supplied by the individual”
(Lunn, 2021, p. 6).

3. Westhill Park
• Address: 200 Westhill Place, Port Moody, BC
• Service Sector: Public because while it has a small entry fee (these fees are subsidized) for the
outdoor pool use, its park, soccer field, baseball diamond, lacrosse box and playground are all
funded and maintained by the city of Port Moody (municipal government), which is the level of
government “in which the recreation needs of the general public are directly addressed the
through offering of recreation services” (Lunn, 2021, p. 5).
• Connection: Westhill park would be an example of recreation, physical education and coaching.
Recreation because all facilities are open to the general public people can use the different
facilities as they please, if field spot or lacrosse box are not booked. It’s related to coaching in
that Port Moody soccer club teams from different ages run practices and soccer camps there,
typically during spring/ summer months. Port Moody lacrosse also hold practices in the outdoor
lacrosse box. Swimming lessons are also taught at Westhill pool which is a from of physical
education as kids from all ages learn how to swim. (Port Moody City of the Arts, n.d.).

4. Rocky Point
Park
• Address: 2800 Murray Street, Port Moody, BC
• Service Sector: Public. Rocky Point park is a
public space which is open to the general public
as it is maintained and funded by the municipal
government, with no cost from the induvial
other than coming in the form of taxes but its
use and accessibility is for the “public good”
(Lunn, 2021, p. 3).
• Connection: Recreation, Physical Education.
Recreation connection comes in the form of the
general public being able to use the park for a
variety of activities which could include frisbee,
walking dogs, walking/ jogging etc. It also
includes services like pool use coming at a small
cost from the individual during summer months,
kayaking lessons and dragon boating teams. The
park provides a broad “range of recreation
opportunities for every individual and group
consistent with available community resources
and needs” (Lunn, 2021, p. 6). Its physical
education connection come in the form of
people from all ages learning how to kayak or
dragon boat through both professional and
voluntary guides. (Port Moody City of the Arts,
n.d.).

5. Ultimate fitness
• Address: 3082 Spring Street, Port Moody, BC
V3H 1A7
• Service Sector: Ultimate fitness is private
sector business. As while it is open to the
general public with a cost coming from the
individual its costs are high and profit oriented,
it works in partnership with personal trainers
and offers classes paid by the individual. It is
not funded of maintained by the municipal
government and would be considered a leisure
service. (Lunn, 2021).
• Connection: Recreation, Physical education.
Physical education connection comes in the
form of Schools working and personal trainers
working in partnership with the business.
While attending port moody secondary school I
attended this gym at a reduced cost as part of a
class offered in the curriculum. Recreation
comes in the form of its open use to the general
public, individuals who pay are not required to
work under a personal trainer or take a class.

6. Innovative
Fitness
• Address: 2739 Murray Street, Port Moody, B.C.
V3H 1X1
• Service Sector: Innovative Fitness is a part of the
private sector as it an indoor commercial recreation
service “for which the consumer pays and for which
the supplier expects to make a profit” (MacLean,
Peterson, & Martin, 1985, p. 220, as cited in Karlis,
2011, p. 79, as cited by Lunn, 2021, p. 6). It has a
specific clientele or target audience centered around
athletes and high-level training. It is not given any
funding by the government to maintain its facilities
and it’s a company which has many different
franchises that span across North America.

• Connection: The first connection is in physical
education in the form of elite athletes learning about
training and nutrition for there self in reference to
their sport of trade through high-level professional
trainers and experts in their respective fields. The
second connection to draw is with recreation as
while they have a target group it’s also open to
general public providing whoever can afford their
service.

7. Orangetheory Fitness
• Address: 400 Capilano Road, Unit

• Service Sector: Orangetheory is
part of the private service sector as
it’s primary focus is on making a
profit in the form of individuals
paying for exercise classes which
is a specialized service provided
by certified personal trainers.

• Connection: Physical education in
the form of general public paying
for classes and learning about
fitness and nutrition through the
help of certified personal trainers.

8. Port Moody Soccer
Club
• Address: 300 Ioco Road, Port Moody, B.C. V3H 2V7
• Service Sector: Port moody soccer club is a part of the
Voluntary service sector that is a non-for-profit
organization which contains five key features which are
“organized, private, non-profit distributing, self-
governing, and voluntary” (Lunn, 2021, p. 8). The focus
is on providing recreation for the local public good, its
costs coming through the form of memberships,
donations and fundraisers which are put back into the
club. Children and youth programs are subsidized by the
taxpayer and or sponsored by organizations like
KidSport. (Lunn, 2021).
• Connection: coaching in the form of volunteer coaches
who coach young and older athletes how to play the sport
and grow them as athletes. There is also a connection to
recreation in the form of their home field at port moody
recreation center being funded and maintained by the
municipal government. (Port Moody Soccer Club, n.d.).

9. Port Moody Panthers
• Address: 300 Ioco Road, Port Moody, B.C.
V3H 2V7
• Service Sector: Port moody panthers is a part of
the Voluntary service sector as it rely’s on “the
efforts of members and volunteers for sustained
survival” (Lunn, 2021, p. 10). Whose induvial/
groups come together to form the port moody
panthers. There home rink is located at the Port
Moody recreation center. (Port Moody Panther,
n.d.).
• Connection: Coaching connection coming in the
form of volunteer coaches who teach young and
older athletes about the sport and grow them as
athletes. Recreation coming in the form of the
home rink being funded and maintained by the
municipal government.

10. TCYBA
• Address: N/A
• Service Sector: The TCYBA is part
of the Voluntary service sector as it
is run by volunteer coaches who
aren’t paid by the organization, it
has no address per say because
games are done across a wide
variety of schools for different age
groups. It includes the tri cities
which are Port moody, Port
Coquitlam and Coquitlam.
• Connection: TCYBA connects most
with Coaching as coaches teach
young and older athletes about the
sport, how to play and look towards
growing them as athletes.
