W.C Blair Recreation Centre
22200 Fraser Hwy, Langley, BC V3A
3T2
W.C Blair Recreation Centre is an example of a public
service because there are subsidized fees for
activities and is a “communal good of society” (Lunn,
n.d., p. 3) by providing programs, promoting health
and fitness, childcare, and many more resources for
the public.
W.C Blair is a combination of recreation and coaching
because it is directly involved in leisure and
recreation services (Lunn, n.d., p. 3) such as
providing opportunities for using the rec’s facilities,
programs , and pool while offering swimming lessons.
Due to them providing swimming lesson opportunities
for the public, the swim instructors must have the
minimum NCCP Swimming Teacher certification (Red
Cross Canada, 2021) in order to teach in the
community, therefore the NCCP coaching courses
apply to the W.C Blair Recreation Centre as well. Langley Advance Times. (2017). W.C. Blair Recreation Centre in Murrayville... [Image].

Langley Secondary
21405 56 Ave, Langley, BC V2Y 2N1
Langley Secondary is a public service due to the
reason that it is considered a “communal good of
society” (Lunn, n.d., p. 3) that delivers the value
Canadians have on educating the general public.
As Lunn (n.d.) states, regarding public educations
value to society the federal government plays a
significant role in public schools such as Langley
Secondary. It is funded by taxes to keep the
school up and running, make the necessary
adjustments to further enhance its functioning,
and pay the salaries of teachers.
Langley Secondary is involved in physical
education by directly teaching students about
various sports and the general health education.
This teaches their students about overall physical
literacy concepts that will encourage them to live
an active lifestyle.

City of Langley Library
City Hall, 20399 Douglas Crescent,
Langley, BC V3A 4B3
The City of Langley Library is considered a public
service because the nature of the service is free
and is considered a “public good” (Lunn, n.d., p.
3). Those within the community and even those
from neighboring communities have the access to
a library membership (free) to also read books
without cost. The federal government plays a role
by reinforcing the value to pursue knowledge and
further self-directed education has on its society
(Lunn, n.d.).
The City of Langley Library belongs to the
recreation portion of SPSC 2210, this is due to
libraries “enhancing the quality of life and well
being” (Lunn, n.d., p. 3), which is a component of
recreation. This form of recreation is available to
all ages and allows individuals to to follow their
interests such as reading a certain type of genre
or even reading a biography of their personal role
model.

Club 16
20175 Langley Bypass, Langley, BC
V3A 6K9
Club 16 is considered a commercial service due
to being a profit orientated business in the form of
“indoor commercial recreation” (Lunn, n.d., p. 6),
which involves fees that generate a revenue
(Lunn, n.d). Their clientele is directed towards
people who can afford their club rates and fees.
As a member myself, I pay a rate of around $11 Bi
– weekly in order to use their facility. They have
merchandise for purchase in their facility which is
not only profit driven, but also an advertising
technique, so that when their members wear their
merchandise in public their company is seen and
promoted.
Club 16 is a source of recreation for the
community of Langley as it “has recognized the
need for innovative leisure and recreation
goods…” (Lunn, n.d., p. 6) and in turn, created a
gym with a large variety of equipment and
amenities for its members to use with a cost. The
company utilizes sponsorships and advertising ”to
create demand” (Lunn, n.d., p. 7).

Langley Christian High School
22702 48 Ave, Langley, BC V2Z 2T6
Langley Christian High School is apart of the
commercial service sector despite providing the
public value of education because of it’s profit
driven motives. Langley Christian High School
uses its revenue solely for profit, this is done by
expensive tuition/registration and mandatory fees.
This means that their clientele is directed towards
“anyone who can afford…” (Lunn, n.d, p. 7) their
rates.
Langley Christian High School is an example of
physical education, it provides the students at the
school with knowledge on how to exercise, how to
play various sports, and teaches them about the
various areas of physical literacy through their
physical education classes.

Fast Track Indoor Karting
5760 Production Way, Langley, BC
V3A 4N4
Fast Track Indoor Karting is apart of the
commercial sector as it is an example of
commercial recreation (Lunn, n.d., p. 6). This
business is open with the goals of generating a
profit from its users. It investigates the consumers
desires of racing family and friends and driving
fast, and then utilizing those recreation desires to
make revenue. Due to this being a leisure and
recreation activity that costs money, it is directed
towards clientele that can afford their rates.
Having Fast Track Indoor Karting in Langley has
“increased recreation opportunities for residents”
(Lunn, n.d., p. 8) when looking for something fun
to do in their free time. Therefore, this company is
directly involved in recreation for residents who
live within the community or those nearby. They
provide a fun experience of karting for those who
can participate.

Langley United Soccer
Association (LUSA)
7707 202b St, Langley, BC V2Y 1S8
The Langley United Soccer Association (LUSA) is
a ”non-governmental organization” that provides
leisure and recreation (Lunn, n.d, p. 8). LUSA is
”primarily operated by volunteers” (Lunn, n.d, p. 8)
such as parents and willing members of the
community that have a passion for teaching youth
and adults' soccer. Their clientele are generally for
“local communities” (Lunn, n.d) however, it is for
the general public so often for those who are
likeminded and enjoy what LUSA has to offer they
will come from nearby communities.
LUSA is both and example of recreation and
coaching. As a voluntary sector, it has a
recognized significance in leisure and recreation
their future Canadian needs (Lunn, n.d). LUSA
also provides opportunities and standards for their
coaches to have certifications within the NCCP.
For example, as posted on their website they
provide free age specific training for their coaches
(Langley United Soccer Association, 2021).

The Langley Senior Resources
Society
20605 51b Ave, Langley, BC V3A
9H1
The Langley Senior Resources Society is a
nonprofit organization which relies on its members
in order to ”sustain survival” (Lunn, n.d, p. 10).
They have both volunteers who provide services
toward their senior members as well as have a
volunteer-based board of directors. Though they
have fees, their fees go towards keeping their
facility running rather than for profit (Lunn, n.d).
The Langley Senior Resources Society is
recreation based. They address the “needs of
society” (Lunn, n.d., p. 10), and in their case
seniors needs of both food and recreation. For
example, they provide opportunities for their
members to paint, play cards, scrabble,
participate in book club and many more. These
are all examples of recreation and leisure in which
this nonprofit organization accommodates for their
members.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Langley
20538 Fraser Hwy #201, Langley,
BC V3A 4G2
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley is apart of the
volunteer sector due to its close relationship with
the community (Lunn, n.d), in which it is run by
volunteers who are willing to dedicate their time to
their organization. This organization looks directly
into mentoring youth and providing them with
learning experiences in aim of leading them into
better futures (Big Brothers Big Sisters, 2021).
This organization falls into both recreation as well
as physical education. It is a form of recreation
because it provides youth with opportunities to
meet friends, play activities with, gain cool
different experiences and other varieties of
recreation. It could be classified as a community-
based organization (Lunn, n.d). It is also
considered to be a source of physical education
as they have programs called “Game on” which
teaches young children about how to be active by
engaging in physical activity, respecting others,
and how to live a healthy lifestyle (Big Brothers
Big Sisters, 2021).

  • 3. W.C Blair Recreation Centre 22200 Fraser Hwy, Langley, BC V3A 3T2 W.C Blair Recreation Centre is an example of a public service because there are subsidized fees for activities and is a “communal good of society” (Lunn, n.d., p. 3) by providing programs, promoting health and fitness, childcare, and many more resources for the public. W.C Blair is a combination of recreation and coaching because it is directly involved in leisure and recreation services (Lunn, n.d., p. 3) such as providing opportunities for using the rec’s facilities, programs , and pool while offering swimming lessons. Due to them providing swimming lesson opportunities for the public, the swim instructors must have the minimum NCCP Swimming Teacher certification (Red Cross Canada, 2021) in order to teach in the community, therefore the NCCP coaching courses apply to the W.C Blair Recreation Centre as well. • 4. Langley Secondary 21405 56 Ave, Langley, BC V2Y 2N1 Langley Secondary is a public service due to the reason that it is considered a “communal good of society” (Lunn, n.d., p. 3) that delivers the value Canadians have on educating the general public. As Lunn (n.d.) states, regarding public educations value to society the federal government plays a significant role in public schools such as Langley Secondary. It is funded by taxes to keep the school up and running, make the necessary adjustments to further enhance its functioning, and pay the salaries of teachers. Langley Secondary is involved in physical education by directly teaching students about various sports and the general health education. This teaches their students about overall physical literacy concepts that will encourage them to live an active lifestyle. School District Langley International Student Program. (2015). • 5. City of Langley Library City Hall, 20399 Douglas Crescent, Langley, BC V3A 4B3 The City of Langley Library is considered a public service because the nature of the service is free and is considered a “public good” (Lunn, n.d., p. 3). Those within the community and even those from neighboring communities have the access to a library membership (free) to also read books without cost. The federal government plays a role by reinforcing the value to pursue knowledge and further self-directed education has on its society (Lunn, n.d.). The City of Langley Library belongs to the recreation portion of SPSC 2210, this is due to libraries “enhancing the quality of life and well being” (Lunn, n.d., p. 3), which is a component of recreation. This form of recreation is available to all ages and allows individuals to to follow their interests such as reading a certain type of genre or even reading a biography of their personal role model. • 7. Club 16 20175 Langley Bypass, Langley, BC V3A 6K9 Club 16 is considered a commercial service due to being a profit orientated business in the form of “indoor commercial recreation” (Lunn, n.d., p. 6), which involves fees that generate a revenue (Lunn, n.d). Their clientele is directed towards people who can afford their club rates and fees. As a member myself, I pay a rate of around $11 Bi – weekly in order to use their facility. They have merchandise for purchase in their facility which is not only profit driven, but also an advertising technique, so that when their members wear their merchandise in public their company is seen and promoted. Club 16 is a source of recreation for the community of Langley as it “has recognized the need for innovative leisure and recreation goods…” (Lunn, n.d., p. 6) and in turn, created a gym with a large variety of equipment and amenities for its members to use with a cost. The company utilizes sponsorships and advertising ”to create demand” (Lunn, n.d., p. 7). (Club 16, Langley, B.C, Photo taken by Brenda Claris, 2021)

  • 9. Fast Track Indoor Karting 5760 Production Way, Langley, BC V3A 4N4 Fast Track Indoor Karting is apart of the commercial sector as it is an example of commercial recreation (Lunn, n.d., p. 6). This business is open with the goals of generating a profit from its users. It investigates the consumers desires of racing family and friends and driving fast, and then utilizing those recreation desires to make revenue. Due to this being a leisure and recreation activity that costs money, it is directed towards clientele that can afford their rates. Having Fast Track Indoor Karting in Langley has “increased recreation opportunities for residents” (Lunn, n.d., p. 8) when looking for something fun to do in their free time. Therefore, this company is directly involved in recreation for residents who live within the community or those nearby. They provide a fun experience of karting for those who can participate.
