Library are a great public service. Many people go to the library to read books, study or use the computer. I
personally have a library card and love reading books there.
Libraries are described as a public service sector as according to Lunn they “provide recreation that because
of its nature continually reinforces values and ideals of establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to the
user” (Lunn, 2021, p 3).
Libraries are a great way to relax along with getting homework and studies done. This helps maintain a
healthy lifestyle. They also “provide those opportunities deemed valuable by society (i.e., an urban park or
open space – that because of their nature – cost compared to potential income generation – would not be
provided by the private sector)”(Lunn,2021, p 3).
Libraries provide many opportunites and allow the public to gain knowledge through computers and books.
5. Maple Ridge SPCA

Now you may be thinking what the heck does the community animal center do? The Maple Ridge BC
SPCA is an animal shelter with a variety of kids camps and programs and they alos place surrendered and
stray animals up for adoption. They have a huge impact on the community and help many animals find
families.
“To provide opportunities for recreation to disadvantaged clients: the poor, persons with physical or mental
disabilities, etc” (Lunn, 2021, p 3). Animal shelters can help animals that have had to struggle in life.
Furthermore, a dog can bring so much happiness to one family helping to contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
“To provide recreation that because of its nature continually reinforces values and ideals of establishing and
maintaining a healthy lifestyle to the user” (Lunn,2021, p 3).
Overall this is a great public service sector for the community along with helping many dogs the kids camps
it offers provides an important role in the community
6. Maple Ridge Leisure Centre

Service Sector: Public
Community centers provide services such as “fitness, sport, age-related programs, events, arts,
leadership, etc.” that are deemed a “public good” (Lunn, 2021, p 3).
This place is amazing! Maple Ridge Leisure Centre is a recreation example because it is provided by the
government and offers the general public an affordable way to enjoy recreation and leisure and “act as a
catalyst for recreation development in the community” (Lunn, 2021, p.5).
The leisure center offers many activities including swimming to the general public. Furthermore the
recreation center encourages the community “to promote health and well-being through recreation and
sport” (Lunn, 2021,p 4).
Overall the maple ridge leisure center is great for playing basketball, working out, or swimming with
friends and has a positive impact on the community in recreation and leisure.
8. Olympians Gym

“Recreation for which the consumer pays and for which the supplier expects to make a profit” (MacLean, Peterson, &
Martin, 1985, p. 220, as cited in Karlis, 2011, p. 79).
Olympians Gym is an indoor commercial recreation service that provides consumers of any age, gender and ethnic
background entertainment through fitness (Lunn, 2021). Olympians Gym website states “Olympians Gym is a tight knit
community looking to discover their full potential in the gym through bonding with like-minded individuals and learning
from those around them.
To excel in fitness, health, mind and body, you need to create the right environment filled with positive, hard working,
and encouraging allies. This is the environment at Olympians. Becoming an Olympian means pushing past your limits to
become the best version of yourself by constantly striving to improve!” (Olympians, 2021, p 1).
Similar to Professor Lunn’s quote, Olympians gym provides consumers with indoor commercial recreation services.
9. Cineplex Odeon Meadowtown

Service sector: Commercial Sector
“The commercial sector has responded to the business opportunities of leisure and recreation and has recognized the
need for innovative leisure and recreation goods, supplies, and services” ( Lunn,2021, p 6).
“Examples of commercial recreation include movie theatres, performing arts and sport events, and concerts” (Lunn,
2021, p6).
Cineplex is a great example of recreation as it is a entertainment service that consumers pay to enjoy movies in their
free time. Cineplex also has arcades as another form of entertainment and recreation.
“Commercial recreation is defined as “recreation for which the consumer pays and for which the supplier expects to
make a profit” (MacLean, Peterson, & Martin, 1985, p. 220, as cited in Karlis, 2011, p. 79). Overall cineplex is used for
entertainment and a great example of recreation in the commercial sector.
10. WildPlay

“The commercial sector has responded to the business opportunities of leisure and recreation and has recognized
the need for innovative leisure and recreation goods, supplies, and services” (Lunn, 2021, p 6).
WildPlay is a great example of an entertainment recreation activity.
WildPlay’s motto is “Platforms high above your head. Dozens of ziplines streaking through the trees. Gravity-
powered plummets that makes your heart race. A giant swing so fast it blurs your vision and more suspended
ladders, bridges, nets, and obstacle games than you can count! This is WildPlay.”
Users must pay to use WildPlay as this is a “profit orientated” business (Lunn, 2021, p6). Overall WildPlay is a great
way to have fun and is a great example of a recreation.
11. Maple Ridge Golf Course

“The commercial sector has responded to the business opportunities of leisure and recreation and has
recognized the need for innovative leisure and recreation goods, supplies, and services” (Lunn, 2021, p6).
Maple Ridge Golf Course is “provided for a cost and profit oriented. Some, especially in sport and recreation
businesses, serve public good of some kind (i.e., clearly not much “profit”) in order to retain control; primarily
for profit however”(Lunn, 2021, p 6).
This quote describes the golf course perfectly as it serves the public and in turn they make profit however
they don’t charge very much and it is considered an entertainment service.

Service Sector: Voluntary (Not for Profit)
“The five key features of non-profit organizations are that they are organized, private, non-profit distributing, self-
governing, and voluntary”(Lunn, 2021, p 8).
Albion Football Club is a non profit organized organization that is committed to youth soccer. It is “fitness, sport,
age-related programs, events, arts, leadership, etc”(Lunn, 2021, p 9).
Albion Football Club is a registered Society similar to other community sport organizations (CSO)’s such as
YM/WCA, PAC (Lunn, 2021, p 9). Albion Football Club is one of these organizations and falls under the voluntary
sector category.

Maple Ridge museum and community archives is an example of a voluntary sector. “All voluntary sector leisure
and recreation organizations have one thing in common – they rely on the efforts of members and volunteers for
sustained survival” (Lunn, 2021, p 10).

15. Maple Ridge Tennis Club

Maple Ridge Tennis Club is a not for profit example of a “fitness, sport or age-related programs”(Lunn,2021 ,p 9).
Maple Ridge Tennis Club is located in east Maple Ridge and are surrounded by mountain views and forests making
it one of the best places to play tennis anywhere!
Lunn states “Select populations; local communities; general public like-minded individuals, expanding as service
orientation expands”( Lunn ,2021,pg9). This perfectly describes Maple Ridge Tennis Club as it has a nominal fee
and many people come together to enjoy the atmosphere and play tennis. This fall under the focus clientele tab.
Furthermore, tennis is a very seasonal sport as you cannot play outdoors in wet weather consistent with Lunn’s
observation that sport “can be all the time and/or seasonal” (Lunn, 2021, p 9). Overall, the Maple Ridge Tennis
Club is a not for profit that offers a great way to socialize and exercise at the same time.
16. Ridge Meadows Baseball Association

Service sector: Voluntary (Not for profit)
“Examples of athletics and sports organizations include aquatics, athletic clubs, health clubs, hockey, yachting, etc.
Community sport organizations (CSO), YM/WCA, PAC, Neighborhood House, Boys & Girls clubs, Arts, etc” (Lunn 2021, p
9).
The Ridge Meadows Baseball Association offers coaching to young baseball players along with community volunteer
opportunities for coaches. The Ridge Meadows Baseball Association prioritizes “fun” and “learning” as many athletes are
able to enjoy recreation along with learning the principles of baseball.
Lunn states “growing the game” is good very important to the Ridge Meadows Baseball Association (Lunn, 2021, p 10).
The Ridge Meadows Baseball Association prioritizes growing the players as athletes and as people. This also applies to
the coaches as they can get certified and learn leadership qualities.
