4. FROM THE
PRINCIPAL’S DESK
At Bal Bharati Public School, Navi Mumbai, we believe that there is no substitute for
‘Education Through Action’ and that exploring people, places, cultures, economic
opportunities, and technological advancements through travel, complements and
completes the educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavor to create
responsible and dynamic global leaders and global citizens by bringing the knowledge
of the world to the classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world.
These two methods are essential to create empathy, understanding and International
collaboration.
In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to France and Spain. We
chose this program for its focus on exposing students to the rich culture and history
of two of Europe’s most-sought after destinations, France and Spain. To augment the
broader program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured students’
engagement and experience. This Student Travel Chronicle (Photo book) is an outcome
of this collaborative and exploratory module that our students partook in along with the
students of Goldcrest High School and North Point School. It captures the entire journey in
students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from the intense,
eight day interaction with two of the world’s most successful democratic nations.
I would also like to recognize the efforts of EdTerra Edventures; a Truly Educational
School Trips company that is well aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular goals
and developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff,
especially their on-journey educator, the Journey Mentor and Visa Assistance Services.
Their professionalism made the journey effortless, safe and enriching for each one of us.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to the students, who participated and engaged with
the program enthusiastically. I hope that each parent may feel proud of this highly
demonstrable publication that will keep reminding their daughters and sons of their
achievement and capabilities, lifelong.
With best wishes,
Mr. Ganesh Parameswaran

5. LETTER FROM EDTERRA
TM
A journey to foreign soil is always replete with learning and excitement for any young and
inquisitive mind. When the destinations are as rich as France and Spain, one can only imagine
the myriad ways in which Indian students may absorb and construct learning out of the many
differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of these great nations vis-à-vis our
own.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge through a
meaningful encounter with a new culture, without diluting their fun and excitement or restricting
their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program Development Team
(PDT), which is comprised of both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs
culturally neutral tools that enable students to meaningfully observe, record and articulate their
impressions. These tools are deployed through a process that encourages teamwork, meaningful
discussions, recording observations through digital media and finally synthesizing all this into a
media product that showcases the ideas and learning of the students.
This publication, France & Spain, is one such media product that captures the eight day journey of
learning of the gifted students of Bal Bharati Public School, Navi Mumbai along with the students
of Goldcrest High School and North Point School to Paris, Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona, in
images and words. This beautiful book serves as a window into two of the most beautiful countries
of Europe – France and Spain, for those students, peers and parents who could not be a part of
the journey. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students, credit for which
is rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank Bal Bharati Public School, Navi Mumbai, for their efforts
and support which made this journey of discovery possible, with a special mention to the Principal,
Mr.GaneshParameswaran,forguidingusthroughouttheprocessoffinalizingourjourneyplans
and undertaking the journey as well. EdTerra would also like to thank the accompanying teachers,
for their sense of adventure and dynamism that the French call joie de vivre. Their energy made
our jobs easy, and more importantly, made for a more memorable journey for the students. We
encourage you to read on and re-live the learning and adventures of these students through the
words and photographs that follow.
Sincerely,
Christine Massey

10. OUR JOURNEY (Bal Bharati Public School)
Written and Photographed by: Aarushi, Dharmarajan, Manan, Rohan, S.D Bhuvan,
Shanta, Siddharth, Vasudha Yuvraj
Andre Gide once said,‘Man cannot discover new
oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight
of the shore’. On this journey, we have stepped
out of our comfort zones to discover and explore
new places and most importantly, learn from
every new moment. Visits to Paris, Madrid and
Barcelona have all been unique, with one-of-its-
kind experiences in each city.
The biggest city in France, Paris is also the hub
of art, fashion and entertainment in Europe.
The city houses one of the world’s most visited
tourist sites, the Eiffel Tower. It has been the
world’s tallest man-made structure for 41 years.
Paris is also home to famous tourist sites like the
Louvre Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral, the
Latin quarter, the Arc De Triomphe, the Champs-
Elysees and the Sacré Cœur Basilica. Going to
these places gave us a totally different feel, an
enthusiasm to discover more and to travel more.
The history, architecture and the importance of
these structures in the present world has taught
us that no matter how old a historical structure
is, its impression remains etched in people’s
heart forever. The people of France were friendly
and hospitable. The French have in many ways,
become fashion icons for their unique sense of
style.
Our next stop was Spain which is located in
the Iberian Peninsula along with Portugal,
Gibraltar, Andorra and France. The country has a
fascinating history; it is the birthplace of some of
the most brilliant artists and the center of fun in
Europe.Spain is a proud country and the Spanish
are devoted to their families and their culture.
They love to enjoy every moment of their life,
which was clear to us when we went there! The
Flamenco dance was mind-blowing! In Spain,
our first stop was Madrid where we saw the
Plaza Mayor, Puerto Del Sol and the best part,
the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. What cricket
is for India, football is for Spain. The Santiago
Bernabeu stadium is known as the Mecca of
European football, so naturally we all looked
forward to seeing it. Madrid also houses the
Royal Palace of the monarch, which is mostly
only used for official ceremonies.
Our next stop was Barcelona. We drove to it via
Zaragoza over a six-hour long journey. It should
have been exhausting but in fact,it was one of the
most beautiful journeys by road since we could
see the beautiful landscapes and greenery all
around us.
Zaragoza houses the famous Basilica of Our
Lady of Pilar. It is the first church dedicated
to Mother Mary. The architecture of these
churches was really inspiring. Barcelona, the
capital of Catalonia, is a city of life, laughter and
merriment. This city depicts the work of famous
artists and inspiring architects like Antoni Gaudi.
The La Sagrada Familia by Antoni Gaudi, the La
Ramblas street and Nova Icaria beach are some
of the major attractions of Barcelona.

18. PARIS (Bal Bharati Public School)
Written and Photographed by: Abhishek, Ananya, Ayush, Mohit, Sanjana Vanshika
Paris is popularly called the ‘City of light’ and
is celebrated for an air of romance and fashion.
However, the well-lit boulevards and dazzling
bridges are not the real reason it is called the
‘City of Light’. Paris used to be called the ‘La
Ville-Lumière’, because it was the birthplace of
the Age of Enlightenment and was renowned as
a centre of education and ideas throughout the
whole of Europe. The city inspired poets and
philosophers, engineers and scientists galore.
There are a variety of reasons why Paris is so very
visit worthy. We got to know how Paris transitioned
from being a monarchy to a democratic society in
1789.Visiting the Eiffel Tower was one of the best
experiences of our trip and going there was like
a dream come true. The Tower is one of the most
visited paid monuments in France.
Seine River cruise was one of the highlights of
our trip along with the Notre-Dame Cathedral
which is in the heart of the city.
We got an opportunity to visit the world’s largest
museum, the Louvre. It is the central landmark
of the city. The Mona Lisa is showcased here,
protected by bullet proof glass and with its very
own bodyguard. We also visited the Place de la
Concorde, one of the major public squares in
Paris,theArcdeTriomphestandingatthewestern
end of the Champs-Elysees and Disneyland.
Disneyland in Paris was a perfect mix of fun,
laughter and joyfulness. We enjoyed all the
rides and were so happy to see popular Disney
characters everywhere in the park. We were
grinning from ear-to-ear when we got a chance
to talk to and shake hands with some of them. The
story-telling rides,eating a meal at the restaurant
there were such wonderful experiences.
Clicking group pictures in front of the Disney
Castle is a memory we will cherish forever.
Our team literally enjoyed delving into the
history of Paris which has so many layers and
stories. We have learnt a few travel tips on this
trip and would like to sound a word of caution for
tourists travelling to Paris. Please be alert and
beware of pickpockets by taking care of your
belongings at all times. Paris is very different
from India. The food, the culture, the language,
everything was so interesting, and we felt like
there was so much to learn about. Students
would especially enjoy Paris because of the
magnificent views, the trendy fashion and the
yummy local food.

26. PARIS - A TOURIST DELIGHT
(Gold Crest High School)
Written and Photographed by: Arista, Jiya, Sanya Tavjot
On the morning of May 8, our Emirates flight
landed in Paris and we were overjoyed. Even
though we were tired, when the tour operator
announced after lunch, that we were heading for
the Eiffel Tower, our tiredness wore off.
Paris is called the ‘City of Light’ and when we
were up on the second level of the Eiffel Tower
we could see the entire city of Paris all lit up.
We were amazed as we took in the breathtaking
views from that height.
NextwastheSeineRivercruisewherethescenery
was splendid and beautiful. We enjoyed the view
of Paris’s skyline and the narration along the way
which told us so much more about the buildings
and bridges we were seeing.
Over the next days, we visited the Arc de
Triomphe which is a gigantic monument at one
end of the most popular and expensive avenues
in Paris, the Champs-Elysees. The Champs-
Elysees Avenue in Paris tops the list of the most
beautiful avenues in the world and one of the most
exclusive shopping destinations. Even today,
it boasts of luxury flagship brands like Louis
Vuitton and Cartier among several others. From
there,we could see a beautiful,huge Ferris wheel
on the Place de la Concorde. Then we stopped
for a picture at the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Our next destination was the legendary Louvre
Museum where we saw the iconic portrait of
Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Mona
Lisa’s enigmatic smile has enthralled several
generations across the world. And it is just one
of the many exquisite paintings on display at the
Louvre. The Louvre is the world’s largest museum
and has an impressive art collection. Due to this,
it is impossible to see the entirety of the Louvre
in just one visit.
We spent the last day in Paris in Disneyland
and we were so excited to be there that it felt
like we were all five years old again.‘Bienvenue
Disneyland’, were the first words we heard
in Disneyland, which literally translates to
‘Welcome to Disneyland’. Once we entered
through the gates of this much-awaited magical
world, we knew that it was going to be amazing.
Seeing our favorite Disney characters right
before us, clicking selfies with them and the
amazing rides made our day perfect. Roller
coasters like ‘Space Mountain’ were especially
mind-blowing. Disneyland was the highlight of
our journey and the visit was thoroughly enjoyed
by all of us.

34. MADRID (Bal Bharati Public School)
Written and Photographed by: Aaditya, Arnav, Amaan, Chaitanya, Ekta, Vaidei Yatharth
Madrid can be described in so many ways. It is
the capital of Spain. It is the third largest city of
the European continent. It is located on the banks
of the river Manzanares. It has a population of
3.2 million people. However, none of them could
adequately describe the magic of Madrid. It
occupies a special place in the hearts of millions
of people who visit it every year. One surprising
thing about Madrid is that it lies at the highest
altitude of any capital in Europe,at 2,188 ft! There
is this and so much more to discover on a visit to
Madrid.
El Oso El Madrono is the statue of a bear eating
from a strawberry tree and is located in Madrid’s
Puerta Del Sol. It is the symbol of Madrid and
there are many theories as to why it is so.
The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, located in
Madrid is the home ground of one of the world’s
most successful football clubs, the Real Madrid. It
was built between the years 1944-1947. Over the
years, the Real Madrid club has won 24 trophies
and 12 European Cup titles.
The Palacio Real, commonly known as the Royal
Palace is the largest royal palace in Western
Europe. It was the official residence of the
Spanish royal family but is nowadays used only
for state ceremonies. The royal family now lives in
the outskirts of Madrid in Palacio de la Zarzuela.
Out of 3418 rooms in the palace, 24 of the most
important rooms are open to the public.
There is a Throne room in the palace which is
the official residence of the crown and it is here
that the throne of a senior figure is set up. It is
the largest and most magnificent room in the
Palace due to the superb mirrors and the rich
furnishings with which it is decorated. Tiepolo
had a great deal of imagination and painted the
ceiling frescoes with both warmth and ease. It is
used for ceremonial purposes only. The throne
is studded with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and
other precious stones.
The official Dining room is a massive room which
can hold a large number of people. It is also often
used to host dances. On such occasions, half
of the room is set up for dancing and the other
half is for dining. In addition to the wonderful
paintings on display across the palace, the
frescoes and sculptures in the palace are also
notable, created as they are by celebrated artists
like Robert Michel, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo,
Anton Raphael Mengs and many more.
We had a wonderful time in the capital city,
Madrid, and we would love to come back to
explore one of Europe’s most popular cities.

42. BARCELONA (North Point School)
Written and Photographed by: Adil, Armaan, Carol, Mahek Rahul
Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in the
world. It is Spain’s second largest metropolis and
one of its major travel destinations. This capital of
Catalonia is also known as ‘Gaudi’s city. It is cool,
cosmopolitan and delightful.
We went to see the Montjuïc Castle which served
as a prison and is on a hill from where we could
see the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. The cable
car ride to Montjuic Hill gave us stunning views
of the city of Barcelona too.
We also stopped at the Barrio Gothico. It is
located at the center of the city of Barcelona
and has beautiful buildings that date back to the
Roman era.We even spent time at Poble Espanyol,
a traditional Spanish village which includes over
100 buildings, an open-air museum and art and
crafts shopping.
Even the photo stop at Parque Guell was really
very beautiful. It is also a site built by Antoni
Gaudi. People come from different places to
visit this place. It is a beautiful landscaped park
decorated with playful modernist mosaics.
A highlight of our visit to Barcelona was the heart-
stopping Flamenco dance performance that we
watched at the end of the day!
Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia was simply
spectacular. Our guide told us that this church
was designed by the creative genius Antoni
Gaudi. This church was commissioned in 1882
and is still under construction. It has taken so long
to complete due to challenges over the intense
complexity of the design, the money needed
to fund it and a building interruption from the
Spanish Civil War. It is said that it would be
completed in 2026, the hundredth anniversary
of Gaudi’s death.
Another curious thing about Barcelona was that
there were so many miniature dogs there! This
was mainly due to the lack of green spaces for
dogs in general,small apartments,and a densely
populated urban environment.
La Rambla is probably the most famous street
in Barcelona, but in reality, it consists of five
boulevards, or ramblas, joined to make one
long promenade. La Rambla is the major center
of activities in the city and is the most famous
promenade of Barcelona, and probably in all
Spain.
We even saw a supposedly magical fountain at
the top of La Rambla. It is said that if you drink
water from that fountain, you will fall in love with
Barcelona and will surely come again. Visiting
Barcelona again would be a real treat. There are
so many beautiful places to see and experience.
Am sure everyone who comes here must be
drinking from the fountain in the hope that they
can some day come back to this marvelous city!

When it was announced that our school is taking us on a trip to Spain and France.

I had only read about till now. I am really into history due to which I was overtly
excited about going to Paris. I hope our school sends us on many trips like this in

school trip because we were going to Paris, Madrid and Barcelona and I couldn’t
wait to see the sights. The football stadium in Madrid, Disneyland in Paris…I loved
everything. I loved the cool weather, the beautiful sights, the shopping and the
chocolates. It was just awesome.

any other student, I did some research before going on this trip. I watched a lot of

I looked forward to it all and when I saw it for real it looked even better.

The Louvre Museum was filled with beautiful paintings and artifacts. I was
surprised by the size of Disneyland, it was huge and so full of unique rides. The
Real Madrid stadium was awesome and had all its official merchandise on sale.
By the end of this trip, I had never been happier with my empty wallet. It was truly

the Mona Lisa.
Armaan Sheikh
Hi! I am Armaan Sheikh, a student of Class 10 at North Point School, Navi Mumbai.
I like to travel. I was looking forward to a foreign trip to Europe for the longest
time. At first, we weren’t allowed to go, owing to our board exams, but then our
Principal agreed to send us. However, some of us got together and requested
our Principal who gave us permission to go on the trip. My friends and I were so
excited. We went to Paris and saw the world’s highest man-made structure, the
Eiffel Tower. We travelled across Paris and it was an awesome experience. Then
we travelled to Madrid and visited the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu stadium. It was
a superb trip.
Carol Ahmed
Holla! I am Carol Sarah Ahmed and I am in Class 7 at North Point School. I play
badminton and I also like to dance and listen to music. My birthday is on March
1. We went on a school trip to Barcelona, Madrid and Paris. I enjoyed Paris a lot
and especially loved Disneyland. The historical monuments we saw on this trip
were spectacular and so very interesting. Each of the monuments and sites were
beautiful in their own way. Every place that we went to, the streets were very neat.
The beauty of the streets and the cleanliness inspired me too.
Mahek
Hello everyone! My name is Mahek. I am in Class 9 at North Point School. On our
school trip to Europe, there would be a nice wakeup call in the morning. The first
thing we did on reaching there was calling our relatives and telling them we had
arrived safely. We went to level two of the huge Eiffel Tower. We went to various
places for shopping and then left for Madrid. In Madrid, we saw a magical church
which was full of mystery. Legend has it that whatever you wish for at the church
will come true. I wished that everyone gets everything in life.

Kasturi
Chattopadhyay
I am an avid geographer and my love for the world has taken me to several places.
However, the trip organized by EdTerra was a real eye opener and we were able
to see things from a completely different perspective. In both Paris and Spain, we
saw and enjoyed the local food and ambience, the children handled themselves
very well and adjusted extremely gracefully to the different cuisine on offer.
We carried back various tales from this trip, some are captured in our mobile
phones and cameras and others are etched in our memory for ever. This is Kasturi
Chattopadhyay from North Point School signing off with lots of good wishes for
all of us.
