Mr. B. D. Seymour
Principal
G. D. Somani Memorial School
At G. D. Somani Memorial School, Mumbai, we believe that there is no substitute for
‘Education Through Action’ and that exploring people, places, cultures, economic
opportunities, and technological advancements through travel, complements and
completes the educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavor to create
responsible and dynamic global leaders and global citizens by bringing the knowledge
of the world to the classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world.
These two methods are critical to create the three pillars of international success
in the modern inter-connected world: empathy, understanding and International
collaboration.
In line with this philosophy, our students recently journeyed to Germany and Italy. We
chose this program for its focus on exposing students to the rich history of two of the
greatest European nations. They visited and explored a number of historic, natural and
architectural marvels in Munich, Venice, Pisa, Florence, and Rome. To augment the
broader program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured students’
engagement and immersion. This Student Travel Chronicle is an outcome of this
collaborative and exploratory module. It captures the entire journey in students’ own
words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from the intense, nine day
interaction with two of the world’s most successful nations.
I would also like to recognize the efforts of EdTerra Edventures; a Truly Educational
School Trips company that is well aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular goals
and developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff,
especially their on-journey educator, the Journey Mentor and Visa Assistance Services.
Their professionalism made for an effortless, safe and enriching travel experience for
each one of us and for the student group.
We extend a heartfelt thanks to the students, who participated and engaged in the
programenthusiastically.Ourwillinglearnershadanenrichingexperience,theenduring
benefits of which they will reap all through their academic life and career.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
5. A journey to foreign soil is always replete with learning and excitement for any young and
inquisitive mind. When the destinations are as rich as countries such as Germany and Italy,
one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students may absorb and construct
learning out of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of
these great European nations.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge
through a meaningful encounter with new cultures, without diluting their fun and excitement
or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program
Development Team (PDT), which is comprised of both Indian and international experts. The
PDT carefully designs culturally neutral tools that enable students to meaningfully observe,
record and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed through a process that
encourages teamwork, meaningful discussions, recording observations through digital
media and finally synthesizing all this into a media product that showcases the ideas and
learning of the students.
This publication, ‘Germany and Italy’, is one such media product that captures the 9 day
journey of learning of the gifted students of G. D. Somani Memorial School, Mumbai, in
images and words. This beautiful book serves as a window into the Germany and Italy
experience for those students, peers and parents who could not be a part of the journey.
It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students, credit for which is
rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank G. D. Somani Memorial School, Mumbai, for their
efforts and support which made this journey of discovery possible, with a special mention
the Principal, Mr. B. D. Seymour, for guiding us throughout the process of finalizing our
journey plans. EdTerra would also like to thank the accompanying teachers, Ms. Alka
Thakur and Ms. Ratna Chauhan, for the sense of adventure and dynamism that the French
call joie de vivre. Their energy made our jobs easy, and more importantly, made for a more
memorable journey for the students. We encourage you to read on and re-live the learning
and adventures of these students through the words and photographs that follow.
Sincerely,
Christine Massey

LETTER FROM EDTERRA
10. OUR JOURNEY
Written and photographed by: Heet, Neel, Nikunj, Sadiq & Siddhi
Our trip to Germany started on the 25th of
April. We reached Munich via Dubai. A beautiful
place, Munich is the epitome of cultural brilliance.
In Munich we visited multiple places like
Nymphenburg Palace and Marienplatz. Our visit
also included a city tour that covered the main
highlights of the city. We also visited the BMW
Plant in Regensburg, a town close to Munich.
During our visit to Marienplatz, we witnessed
hordes of excited fans who had travelled to
Munich to see the FC Bayern and Real Madrid
match.
The very next day we visited Nymphenburg
Palace, which was the summer residence of
Bavarian Royalty. It was constructed, section
by section, by generations of Bavarian Royalty.
After our visit to the Nymphenburg Palace, we
visited the BMW plant at Regensburg. Creation
of magnificient automobiles from scratch
entranced us.
On the very next day we embarked on a long and
arduous journey from Munich to Padova in Italy.
On our way to Padova we visited the Swarvoski
Crystal Museum in Innsbruck, Vienna. During our
visit we saw various crystals and exhibits that
varied from a kaleidoscope in colour to intricately
designed forms.
We reached Padova the same day around dinner
time. On the following day, we visited the
breathtaking island city of Venice. We reached
Venice via boat. The first thing in Venice we
saw were the beauteous arched bridges that
connected the 124 islands of Venice. Then
we proceeded to see a small glass-blowing
demonstration where we witnessed how actual
Murano glass is made. Then followed the city
tour, after which we experienced the Gondola
ride. We were then given a couple of hours to
shop and explore the mesmerizing City of Venice.
The next day we made our way to Maranello to
visit the Ferrari Museum which was filled with
the finest cars in the world. We proceeded to
Pisa on the following day, where we visited one
of the ancient seven wonders of the world - the
Leaning Tower of Pisa. Famous for its leaning
structure that is structurally as sound as any
other building in this world, it was a sight to
behold.
Florence - an art hub, famous for its paintings and
architecture was where we found ourselves the
next day. After a long but exciting and beautiful
walking tour of the artful city of Florence in the
morning, we travelled to the historical city of
Rome.
During our visit to Rome, we also visited the
Vatican city, the Pope’s residence and the center
of Christianity. We saw the exquisite sculptures
by various talented artists and also by the much
acclaimed Michelangelo, on the roof of the Sistine
Chapel. After lunch, we went on a bus tour of
the City of Rome and also visited the Colosseum
which is one of the ancient seven wonders of
world. One of the biggest amphitheatres in the
world, it is where gladitor fights used to take
place. We also visited the Trevi Fountain and
stopped a bit to shop.
Finally, on the next day, we kissed goodbye to
Europe and left the European city of Rome
to return home. A fun trip overall, it will be
imprinted in our minds forever. The memorabilia
we collected and the pictures that we clicked will
always remind us of this overwhelming trip.

The journey to Germany and Italy was organized
by our school and EdTerra. We entered Munich
on 25th April. We went past the football club
Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena. Bayern Munich
also won Bundesliga this season. We proceeded
for lunch where we had our first experience with
European food which consisted of Italian pizzas.
The people who worked there were kind and
spoke Hindi too. So we were very comfortable.
After lunch, we boarded our bus and began our
city tour. We visited places like Frauenkirche and
Munich Residenz. We then went on a shopping
expedition to Marienplatz where we did some
shopping for ourselves. There were many football
fans crowding the area and chanting because
of the UEFA Champions League quarter finals
between FC Bayern Munich and FC Real Madrid
at the Allianz Arena. We then checked in to our
hotel.
On the very second day our morning call was at
6:45 am. We had our breakfast at 8:00am and
boarded our bus at 8:45 am. It was cold with a
strong breeze. Then we visited the Nymphenburg
Palace. The palace was the main summer
residence of the former rulers of Bavaria of the
House of Wittelsbach. Over there, they had a
gift shop which was on the ground floor of the
Centeral Pavillion. This is the oldest part of the
palace. The palace was a gift by Flector Ferdinand
Maria to his beautiful Italian wife, Adelaide. The
well-maintained gardens were mesmerizing to
look at and were wonderfully laid out.
After lunch, we visited the well constructed BMW
plant. The company was founded on 7th April
1916. Each and every car is constructed piece
by piece with the help of thousands of robots
and people working at the plant. They showed us
the whole process of the formation of the car
and the hardwork that goes into this process.
We had a lovely time in Munich. We hope to visit
Munich again.

Venice is a prosperous island. A majority of
the island’s houses are built directly on water
by digging and placing wooden beams directly
into the canal beds. Initially, around the 12th
century Venice was a poor island with hardly any
inhabitants as it was plagued with malaria.
After the collapse of the Roman Empire the
Romans fled to Venice as they thought that the
invading Germans would not follow them to
Venice since it had the malaria problem. As time
passed, the Romans strengthened Venice and
turned it into a prosperous, popularand rich island.
Ship trade was introduced in Venice and many
people came to live here. Since then, Venetians
have created many historical monuments such
as the bridges, St. Mark’s Church and St. Mark’s
Square. Venetians also created the Gondola
which is now a famous symbol of Venice. Venice
has many historical monuments and is one of the
most prosperous islands in the world.
We took a full day tour of Venice which first
included St. Mark’s Square. It is locally known as
Piazza San Marco or La Piazza. It is the principal
public square of Venice. All other urban spaces in
the city are called Campi (“fields”).
We visited the Grand Canal which is one of the
most important water-corridors of the city of
Venice. Then we moved on to see Doge’s Palace
and the Bridge of Sighs. Doge’s Palace is one of
the main landmarks of Venice; it was initially used
as the official residence of the Doge of Venice.
After this we walked to a Murano glass factory
where the workers amazed us with their skills.
This demonstration was a beauty to watch.
Venice has specialized in glassware for centuries.
Murano’s glassmakers led Europe for centuries,
developing orrefining many technologies including
crystalline glass. This is something we saw for
the very first time in our life. Then we enjoyed a
gondola ride. Even though the day was tiring, we
enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. We especially
enjoyed the speedboat experience and the
Gondola ride. Another highlight was the shopping
we indulged in on the island. We bought many
souvenirs to take back as memories of Venice.
This experience in Venice was truly magical.

On the seventh day of our educational trip
we travelled to the breathtaking city centre
of Florence (in Italian, Firenze). Florence was
originally a Roman colony. Florence portrays the
architectural expertise of the Roman empire.
Florence is known as the “Cradle of Renaissance”,
for its monuments, churches and buildings. The
best known sight of Florence is the cathedral of
the city, Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as
Duomo. Santa Maria del Fiore was built on the
site of Florence’s second cathedral dedicated to
Saint Reparta.
The city of Firenze’s very first building was
consecrated as a church in 393 by St. Ambrose of
Milan. The ancient structure, founded in the early
5th century underwent many repairs but was
crumbling with age. Florence started building a
new cathedral in 1296. The entire cathedral was
constructed in gothic style, designed by Arnolfo
Di Cambo. The cathedral was constructed in
green and pink and bordered with white design.
The cathedral is spread over 89000 sq. ft. It
is 153m in length, 90 meters in width and 115
meters in height. It was firstly completed in
1436 after 140 years of hard work.
The Roman Catholic Church is accompanied by a
bell tower next to it. It was believed in the olden
days that Christians have to pray every hour.
Hence, the bell tower was constructed and it
rang at the hour. The bell tower has 463 steps to
reach its top. The city square of Florence, Piazza
della Signoria has many beautiful structures
and buildings. One of the most prominent and
important buildings is the Uffizi Gallery. It was
the first museum in the world. We enjoyed the
beautiful cathedral and the art exhibition in the
city square.

42. Rome

Rome was not built in a day. We learnt this as we
explored the beautiful city of Rome. After touring
the rest of Italy, including Padova, Venice, Pisa
and Florence, we finally made our way to the
capital city of Italy, Rome. The city was filled with
lots of ancient monuments dating back to many
centuries ago.
Vatican City has a number of religious and
cultural sites such as St. Peter’s Basilica, the
Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. They
feature some of the world’s most famous
paintings and sculptures. The unique economy
of Vatican City is supported financially by the
sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos,
fees for admission to museums, and the sale of
publications.
Having visited the Vatican museums and the
Sistine Chapel first, we were able to go straight
into St Peter’s Basilica afterwards. This Basilica is
awesome with spectacular sculptures especially
Michelangelo’s Pieta. The Basilica was extremely
busy but still enjoyable. After experiencing
immense beauty within the Vatican City, it was
time to embark on a tour around Rome. We
boarded our bus and began exploring this ancient
city.
During our tour of Rome we started with Piazza
Novena which is a fine example of Baroque
Roman architecture. In the center of this square
stands the beautiful Fountain of the Four Rivers.
After travelling through the city and shopping for
ourselves, we stopped to see Trevi Fountain; this
famous fountain has appeared in several notable
films. The fountain was refurbished in 1998; the
stonework was scrubbed and all cracks and other
areas of deterioration were repaired by skilled
artisans. We made wishes by throwing coins into
the Trevi Fountain. We also enjoyed gelato at the
gelaterias nearby. It was a wonderful experience.
Thereafter, we made our way to a restaurant
where we had a pizza making workshop. We
learnt from scratch how to make pizzas, and
then we made our own pizzas and ate it too. It
was the highlight of our visit to Rome.

Florence, Vatican City and other places. I loved this trip very much and I am very

Hi! I am Sumeet Rupnawar studying in Class 6 of G. D. Somani Memorial School. I
like sleeping and playing video games. EdTerra Edvenures planned a trip to Germany
and Italy for our school. I told my father it was expensive, but he still encouraged me
to go. I had a wonderful experience on the trip.

A ten day Germany & Italy trip was executed by EdTerra, supported by G.D Somani
School. Our journey began with Munich, followed by Florence, Rome and the world’s
smallest city nation, Vatican City. The elegance, public discipline, architecture, history,
arts, general peace and systematic life of Europe have been mesmerizing. This would
not have been possible without the meticulous planning of EdTerra (Ms. Rashmi & Ms.
Christine) and our school (Ms. Ratna Chauhan), under the leadership of our Principal,
Mr. Brian Seymour, for his visionary school education through travel programs.
Hundreds of pictures, bubbly laughter, colourful dresses and cheerful disposition of all
the 27 children speak volumes of the success of this program. Speechless with joy, I
once again thank God for having given me this chance.
An overwhelming experience - our trip to Germany and Italy was fun-filled and
enjoyable. I am thankful to my Principal, Mr. B. D. Seymour for giving me this
opportunity to travel with EdTerra Edventures. International exposure definitely
broadens the vision and enhances the personality of students. It was nice to see
all the children experience a different cultural environment; see a wide variety of
people, beautiful cities, different ways of doing things and opportunities to expand
their horizons. Apart from the beautiful places that we visited - Munich, Innsbruck,
Venice, Florence and Rome, it was the warmth and support of Christine that made
this trip an amazing one!! Visit to the BMW plant was out of the ordinary. An exciting
mix of ancient ruins, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life marked our journey.
Rome was one of the most inspiring cities that we visited. I believe that the children
will cherish these memories just as I will!!
