The philosophy of DSE is a confluence of ‘Learning through Doing’ and that ‘Travel Enables Us to Learn about People, Places, Cultures
etc’.
In tune with this philosophy, our students recently participated in EdTerra’s East Coast Space Adventure. The programme’
s focus on providing enriching exposure to space exploration and technology at NASA’s Kennedy Space center, prompted us to
choose this programme. They also visited historic and modern marvels of Washington D.C., Boston, and New York City. To augment
the broader programme, we selected the Young Authors Programme which reflects an insight into the students’involvement in the
programme and their responses and reactions to various experiences. This Student Travel Review is an outcome of this collaborative
and exploratory module that our students of Delhi School of Excellence, Hyderabad, along with Ambitus World School, Hyderabad,
actively participated in. It captures the exciting journey in the students’ own words and photographs. It also showcases their learning
from their engaging journey to one of the world’s most advanced nations.

MESSAGE FROM EDTERRA

Amita Bajaj
Editor - Student Publications
Dear readers,
An educational journey to foreign lands always induces learning and excitement among young and inquisitive students. When the
destination is as diverse as the USA East Coast, one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students would absorb and
construct learning out of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of India and the USA.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge through a meaningful encounter with a
new culture, without diluting their fun and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through
its Program Development Team (PDT), which comprises both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs culturally
neutral projects that enable students to meaningfully observe, record, and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed
through a process that encourages teamwork and meaningful discussions besides recording observations through digital means,
all of which is finally synthesised into a media product that showcases the ideas and learning of the students.
This Student Travel Review, ‘USA East Coast Space Adventure’, is one such media product that captures the learning of the students
of Delhi School of Excellence, Hyderabad, on their journey to Kennedy Space Center, Orlando along with Boston, Washington, D.C.,
and New York City. This book serves as a window into the USA and above all, the inspiring world of NASA, especially valuable for those
students, peers, and parents who could not be a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the
students, the credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank Delhi School of Excellence, Hyderabad, for their efforts and support which made this
educational journey possible, with a special mention to the Secretary, Mrs. K.M. Rama Devi, for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to
thank the accompanying teachers for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their energy made our work easy, and more importantly,
made for a more memorable journey for the students. We encourage you to read and re-live the learning and adventures of these
students through the words and photographs that follow.

in the 9/11 terror attack. We also went to Times Square, which
was crowded and bustling with energy. We also went to Liberty
Island to see the Statue of Liberty, which was constructed in
late-19th century.
We also visited Boston and visited two prestigious institutes
of higher education: MIT and Harvard University. Not only did
we learn about the courses and programmes offered in their
various departments, we also got an insight into the academic
culture of these institutes. We also visited a private research
university in Cambridge situated in the Boston metropolitan
area.
Our trip to the USA was a wonderful experience. It was
adventurous as well as enjoyable. We learnt about a new
culture by visiting a different country. Going on this trip was a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all of us.
Our educational trip to the USA was an exciting experience.
During our journey, we went to Orlando, Washington, D.C.,
New York, and Boston. From the start of our journey, we were
excited to explore the marvels of this amazing nation.
After landing in Orlando, we visited Walt Disney World. It
seemed like a place that had just come out of a fairytale
setting. We enjoyed watching our favourite Disney characters
during the parade. We also visited another amusement park
— Universal Studios. Inside Universal’s Islands of Adventure,
there were so many interesting rides. There was so much to
explore within a day. Our next destination was NASA’s Kennedy
Space Center. Our visit to the KSC was very informative. We
learnt so much about space science and exploration. We also
visited Cocoa Beach and saw many people fishing and surfing
there.
Next, we left for Washington, D.C. and went for a city tour. It was
overwhelming to pass by the White House, the residence of the
President of the United States. We were fascinated to see its
brilliant architecture. We also visited the Lincoln Memorial
after seeing the Washington Monument. We were inspired by
the life-stories of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington
who had strived to make the USA a free and democratic nation.
Then, we went to New York and visited several of its important
landmarks. First, we paid tribute to all those who lost their lives

rocket in the world. We also saw the Atlantis Space shuttle
‘Orbiter’ that has conducted an impressive 33 successful
space missions. From its first mission conducted in 1985 to
the final one completed in 2011, the Atlantis has contributed
immensely to NASA’s success story. Through an audio-visual
experience, we also learnt about the mission that led to the
successful landing on the moon. The simulated shuttle launch
experience was a thrilling experience as we understood how
astronauts feel going into space. Additionally, we were exposed
to a number of research projects that NASA is leading in the
field of space exploration.
During our visit to the Kennedy Space Center, we learnt about
the history of space exploration. It taught us the importance of
grit, determination, and resilience besides the need to strive
for excellence in life. It was an unforgettable experience that
will always remain ingrained in our minds.
Inspiration + Innovation + Discoveries = Future
Exploring the mysteries of the universe at the NASA center
is like a dream come true. During our visit to the Kennedy
Space Center, we got an opportunity to learn about NASA’s
achievements in space technology. After clicking pictures with
the NASA Globe, we went to the Rocket Garden that showcased
a number of rockets used for NASA’s space missions. We learnt
about the contribution of several men and women whose
dedication and commitment has made space flight possible
for humans. The U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame celebrates the
achievements of scientists, technicians, and astronauts who
have pioneered significant space missions over the years.
Learning about numerous space missions that include Apollo,
Gemini, and Mercury, was enlightening. Later, we watched an
immersive IMAX 3D movie, which showed real footage of outer
space.
At the Kennedy Space Center, we ate lunch with an astronaut
named Barbara Morgan. She shared her valuable experience
of being on multiple space missions. It was an amazing
opportunity to pose multiple questions to her. The interaction
was mind-blowing. We also went for a bus tour of the KSC
and saw the launch pad sites, the Vehicle Assembly Building
(or VAB), the Launch Control Center (LCC) and various other
facilities. We got a chance to click group photographs in one of
the most secure places in the world. We saw Saturn V, a type of

At Walt Disney World, we met some of our favourite animated
characters. It was thrilling to watch the colourful Disney
parade. We were amazed to see Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse,
Cinderella, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Princess Jasmine. We
clicked many photographs with the most cherished Disney
and Pixar characters.
At Walt Disney World, we rode on Splash Mountain and it
was quite adventurous. The Haunted mansion was scary, but
we enjoyed it thoroughly. We also experienced The Twilight
Zone Tower of Terror, which lived up to its name. As we went
through the dark zone, we hurtled and screamed through the
drops and rises of the ride. Our visit concluded with witnessing
the magnificent display of fireworks at Cinderella Castle.
We also visited Universal Studios that left us surprised and
excited. Riding on the roller-coasters seemed dangerous, but
we overcame our fears as soon as we embarked on some of
them. We rode on The Incredible Hulk Coaster, which is known
to be one of the fastest roller-coasters in the world. Its top
speed is known to be about 108 km/hr. Another ride called
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man was a virtual reality
experience with Spider-Man leaping off several buildings while
fighting villains. The simulated experience of a free fall from
the top of a building was exhilarating.
Another amazing experience was Harry Potter and the
Forbidden Journey that took us inside the world of wizardry.
We clicked photographs at the Hogwarts Castle. We also
enjoyed drinking butterbeer at The Hog’s Head. A close
encounter with our beloved characters was like a dream come
true. Going inside the Marvel Super Hero Island was another
amazing adventure. The rides were built using highly advanced
technology. At Universal Studios, we also went on some water
rides. Jurassic Park River Adventure was one such fun ride.
Riding on Skull Island: Reign of Kong was also enjoyable. It
features some of the most impressive animatronics.
Our visit to amusement parks was truly a euphoric experience.
Both Walt Disney World and Universal Studios had such
amazing rides, shows, and other attractions. It seemed as if we
were reliving our childhood all over again.

Our journey started from Orlando from where we went to
Washington, D.C. We spent two days in the capital of the United
States. Those two days were amazing as we gained immense
knowledge.
Our first destination in Washington, D.C. was the Smithsonian
National Air and Space Museum where we saw a number
of exhibits on aviation and space travel. There were planes,
rockets, and thousands of other such artefacts. The scientific
models on display shed light on a number of concepts that
we study in Physics. Most importantly, we learnt about the
successful invention of the Wright Brothers, which marked the
advent of aerial age.
Next day, we visited the U.S. Capitol Building and the Lincoln
Memorial. The U.S. Capitol Building houses the legislative
branch of the US Government. When we visited the Lincoln
Memorial, we learnt about Abraham Lincoln’s efforts to keep
the country united in the face of civil war unrest. Further,
Lincoln was also responsible for emancipating the slaves.
Lincoln served as the President of the USA from 1861–65.
Unfortunately, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, who
sympathised with the Confederates (the group that opposed
the Union during the American Civil War).
On the city tour, we also passed by the White House, which
is the residence of the US President. This important symbol
of American democracy was built in neoclassical style of
architecture.Ittookeightyearstobuildit.Afteritsconstruction
was completed, John Adams became the first US President
to live there. Until 1902, the White House was known as
‘President’s Palace’ and ‘Executive Mansion’.
We also visited the Washington Monument, which was built
to honour the first President of the United States — George
Washington. It is an iconic monument of the Washington,
D.C. skyline. During our visit, we learnt that it is the tallest
freestanding stone structure in the world. Built of granite and
marble, its height is about 555 ft. The monument was severely
damaged in an earthquake during August 2011, however,
major reconstruction efforts were undertaken to rebuild it.
In the two days that we spent in Washington, D.C., we learnt
a lot about American history and culture. By visiting different
monumentsinthecity,werealisedthesignificanceofupholding
the values of liberty and equality. Overall, our educational trip
to the USA was a great learning experience that we will always
remember.

The last destination on our trip to the USA East Coast was New
York City. It is also known as ‘the city that never sleeps’. The
megapolis dazzled us with its glittering skyscrapers, cultural
vibrancy, and commercial hubs. Our first stop was One World
Trade Center (also known as Freedom Tower). We paid homage
at the 9/11 Memorial consisting of two huge, man-made pools
into which two giant waterfalls cascade. The walls of the pool
were inscribed with the names of all the victims of the tragedy.
It was a humbling experience to reflect on the misery of those
families who had lost their loved ones.
Our mood changed when we took an elevator to the One World
Observatory on the 102nd floor of the Freedom Tower. We
were filled with excitement as we looked out at the panoramic
view of the city’s glittering skyline and the Hudson River.
After eating lunch, we went for a bus tour of the city. The streets
were lined with cafés filled with large crowds of people. We saw
the Brooklyn Bridge during the tour. We visited the amazing
Rockefeller Center with its art and sculptures besides visiting
various shops, restaurants, and gardens. We also visited Saint
Patrick’s Cathedral, an imposing neo-Gothic church located
across Rockefeller Center.
Later, we drove past Fifth Avenue, one of the most exclusive
shopping districts in the world, and the Empire State Building
— an iconic landmark symbolising the greatness of the USA.
Our trip to New York would have remained incomplete without
visiting the famous Broadway Theatre. It was exciting to see
the huge crowds lining up for shows. Our last stop was Times
Square. We had only seen it on television until then. Times
Square is known for its digital billboards besides numerous
restaurants, shops, and photo-stops.
In New York, we were wonderstruck by the huge skyscrapers
and their stunning architecture. By the end of the day, all of
us were completely exhausted but the experience was worth
it. On the last day of our trip, we were really thrilled to visit the
Statue of Liberty. Our excitement grew as we took the ferry
to Liberty Island. The statue of Liberty was awe-inspiring and
made us reflect on the values of liberty and equality that the
USA stands for.
Our exposure to culture and history on this trip inspired us to
gain knowledge. There were so many unforgettable moments
on this journey. We are grateful to EdTerra Edventures for
giving us such an amazing opportunity.
