5. At Jankidevi Public School, Andheri, Mumbai, we believe that there is no substitute for
educationthroughactionandthatexploring people, places,cultures,economicopportunities,
and technological advancements through travel, complements, and completes the
educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour to create responsible and
dynamic global leaders and global citizens by bringing the knowledge of the world to the
classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world. These two methods are
critical to create the three pillars of global citizenship based on empathy, understanding, and
International collaboration.
In line with this mission, our Language Development Programme Teachers, Mr & Mrs Dua
accompanied our students to the UK under the Language Immersion Program. We chose
this program to provide global exposure to students through active interaction at Rugby
School. They also visited the University of Cambridge, and Stratford-upon-Avon, and some
important landmarks of London enabling them to improve their English language skills and
have a global exposure at the same time.
To augment the broader program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured
students’ engagement and immersion. This Student Travel Review is an outcome of this
collaborative and exploratory module that our students partook in. It captures the entire
journey in the students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from
the intense week long journey to one of the world’s most successful nations.
I would also like to recognise the efforts of our Language Development Programme Trainers
Mr & Mrs Dua for providing our students with a very enriching experience and also EdTerra
Edventures; a company that is well aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular goals and
developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially
their on-journey educator, the Journey Mentor and Visa Assistance Services. Their
professionalism has resulted in an effortless and safe travel experience for our students.
Each parent may take pride in this publication that will keep reminding them of their wards
achievements and capabilities, all life long.
Happy reading!

6. We are Language Trainers at Jankidevi Public School. We firmly believe that, ‘Good teachers
teach, better teachers inform, and the best ones inspire’. Thus, living by our motto, through
our ‘Language Development Program’, we strive to create the love for language by inspiring
our students to read, trigger their thirst for knowledge, and motivate them to be more aware
and informed. EdTerra’s Language Immersion Program to Rugby School, UK was the right
step in achieving the same. We are very happy that our students got a global exposure,
studying, learning, playing, and interacting with the children of the world... the bonus was
attending the Model United Nations with students from across the globe...
They were excited to be at the school where legendary authors like Lewis Carroll and
Thomas Hughes had studied and could imagine how and why Charles Dodgson was inspired
to create the wonderful Alice in Wonderland.
The cherry on the cake was definitely the visit to Stratford-upon-Avon where we witnessed
excerpts from Shakespeare’s plays at his birthplace. The students were completely awed by
the performances and we could see renewed respect, love, and understanding for the Bard’s
works.
Treading on the cobblestoned streets of Cambridge was also a unique experience. Walking
down the Trinity Lane all the way to Trinity College filled their hearts with pride.
The most awaited part of the trip was the visit to Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station and we
are sure that the picture with the trolley half in and half out of the wall is the most cherished
photograph of the trip. And so are the mementos — wands, badges, magnets, mugs, and
souvenirs they bought from the store.
Equally exciting was the visit to 221B Baker Street to meet Sherlock Holmes. We are glad our
students got an insight into the life of the legendary detective. The mannequins of various
characters from his stories inspired the students to read.
The visit to the British Museum of Natural History was very interesting and informative,
especially the Moon Museum. The return journey on the London Underground was also a
new experience and the students enjoyed humming on the tube.
Equally rejuvenating was the walk down Green Park to see Buckingham Palace and pay
tribute to the Queen. The Victoria Memorial was also memorable and the students enjoyed
the London Eye to the fullest. The bird’s-eye view of the city of London was spectacular.

9. A journey to foreign soil is always replete with learning and excitement for any young and
inquisitive mind. When the destination is as rich as the United Kingdom, one can only
imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students may absorb and construct learning out
of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of India and UK.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge
through a meaningful encounter with a new culture, without diluting their fun and excitement
or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program
Development Team (PDT), which is comprised of both Indian and international experts.
The PDT carefully designs culturally neutral projects that enable students to meaningfully
observe, record and articulate their impressions. These projects are deployed through
a process that encourages teamwork, meaningful discussions, recording observations
through digital media and finally synthesising all this into a media product that showcases
the ideas and learning of the students.
This Student Travel Review is one such media product that captures the journey of learning
of the gifted students of Jankidevi Public School, Andheri, Mumbai, who visited Rugby
School, the University of Cambridge, and Stratford-upon-Avon. This beautiful book serves as
a window into the UK and particularly, London, and especially valuable for those students,
peers and parents who could not be a part of the journey. It also showcases the intellectual
and creative capacities of the students, the credit for which is rightfully due to their parents
and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank Jankidevi Public School, Andheri, Mumbai, for their
efforts and support which made this journey of discovery possible, with a special mention
of the the Principal, Mrs. Sunita Massey, for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to thank the
accompanying teachers, for their sense of adventure and dynamism. Their energy made our
jobs easy, and more importantly, made for a more memorable journey for the students. We
encourage you to read on and re-live the learning and adventures of these students through
the words and photographs that follow.

14. OUR JOURNEY
Our excitement knew no bounds when the day of our journey
finally arrived. All of us had packed our suitcases well in advance.
We met at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in
Mumbai on the designated day. At the airport gates, we bade
goodbye to our families and hugged our parents tightly. As we
made our way into the airport, we saw that people stood in long
queues at the immigration and security check counters. However,
the staff present there was so efficient that all formalities were
completed within a short span of time. Heaving a sigh of relief, we
boarded the plane and the opened packets and boxes of snacks
that our parents had given us. We enjoyed waffles, juices, theplas
and what not... it was so enjoyable.
Once the plane took off, we went to our friends’ seats and played
endless games until we landed in Abu Dhabi. After flying for seven
more hours, we arrived in London and it seemed far more beautiful
than we had ever imagined. It took us about two hours by bus to
reach Rugby School. On our way, we caught some stunning views
of our natural surroundings.
We spent our first day in Rugby School getting acquainted with
other students who had come from different parts of the world.
Then, we went off to bed because all of us were really tired. Next
day, we went to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William
Shakespeare. We visited the house where Shakespeare lived with
his family and even learnt about some plays that he wrote there.
Next morning, we visited the University of Cambridge. On the
bus, we enjoyed singing along with our tour guide, Jesse. We
also visited the London Eye, the London Bridge, the Sherlock
Holmes Museum at 221B Baker’s Street, the British Museum, and
Buckingham Palace. The chief highlight of our day tour was riding
on the London Tube.
Our journey was an incredible experience. We created so many
memories with our old and new friends. In fact, we had so much
fun that many of us did not even feel like returning home. We
returned with a bagful of memories that we will cherish forever.
We are truly indebted to our school, our parents and most
importantly our LDP teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Dua for this wonderful
trip.

22. LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM
Founded in 1567, Rugby School is one of the oldest boarding
schools in England and located just two and a half hours away
from London. More than two centuries of Rugby School’s history
is written on the stones and other monuments around the campus
and help to preserve the legacy of the institution.
As soon as we reached Rugby School, we realised that we were on
hallowed ground. We got to know that Lewis Caroll, the writer of
Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, was a student
of this school. After spending his initial years here, he went to
study at the University of Oxford and received several honours for
his work in Mathematics.
We also learnt that that Rugby School was the place where William
Webb Ellis, a student of the school, invented the game of Rugby
by chance. He panicked during a game of football and completely
disregarded the rules of the game, picked up the ball, and began
running. This marked the beginning of Rugby, a game that now has
followers all over the world.
Our tour guide also shared another piece of interesting information.
In the earlier days, students would jump off their dormitories into
the fields where sheep grazed, resulting in clothes getting muddy.
The headmaster’s wife found the clothes to be very dirty and
instead made white uniforms for all sportspersons. This tradition
has been continuing since then.
Interacting with students from different countries at Rugby School
was a fabulous experience. In the course of a few days, we felt
like we had known them forever. Studying, playing, interacting and
even participating in the Model United Nations with students from
across the world was actually like being in a global school and it
gave us an international exposure in the true sense of the word,
and this was possible only because of our school, our dear LDP
teachers and our loving parents.
Every day of our journey to London was packed with engaging
activities as well as excursions. With every new experience, we
learnt a lot. We understood that not all learning can be imparted
through books and classroom teaching. Exploring the world
outside is integral to the enhancement of learning. Overall, our
journey to London was a fulfilling experience.

30. STRATFORD-UPON-AVON
On our educational tour to London, we went to visit Stratford-upon-
Avon, a medieval market town in Warwickshire. It is the birthplace
of the legendary poet and playwright, William Shakespeare.
Stratford-upon-Avon is also the place where Shakespeare was
buried after his death at the Holy Trinity Church. Perhaps, this is
why it is a must-visit destination for those who are fond of reading
literature.
At Stratford-upon-Avon, it almost felt like we had gone back in
time. We got an opportunity to visit the school where Shakespeare
studied and were inspired to become a playwright. Shakespeare’s
Macbeth and As You Like It were being staged during our visit. We
caught a glimpse of those performances.
We saw the house where Shakespeare was born in 1564. It was one
of the largest houses on Henley Street. The legendary playwright’s
father had served as the Mayor of Stratford and William was his
third child. We gathered this information from a short film that we
saw there. The film was based on the life of Shakespeare.
At Stratford-upon-Avon, we also learnt that Rabindranath Tagore,
the profound poet, novelist, and artist, had composed and
translated a poem as a tribute to William Shakespeare on the
occasion of his quarter-centenary celebrations. Rabindranath
Tagore is known to all of us as the composer of our National
Anthem. The poem written by Tagore has been carved into a
tablet and installed along with The Bust of Rabindranath Tagore
in a garden near Shakespeare’s birthplace. It gave us a sense of
national pride to see his work on display.
We also visited the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal that stretches
from Birmingham’s suburbs to Stratford. We saw the waterfront
and a beautiful park there. We returned with renewed respect and
admiration for the Bard’s works. We also realized the importance
of studying Shakespeare and why he is one of the greatest English
writers.
Our LDP Teachers emphasize a lot on reading and this trip
organized by them made us realize the significance of the same.
Our visit to Stratford-upon-Avon was fascinating. We returned to
Rugby School and spent the night watching movies and playing
games. All of us had a great time laughing and playing together
before retiring for the day.

38. VISIT TO CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY
Every expectation can be proven wrong. This is what comes to
our minds whenever we think about our visit to the University of
Cambridge. When we went on a tour of the prestigious university,
we were awestruck. The university is spread over a huge area
consisting of numerous schools and colleges offering courses in
several disciplines. One of the well-known institutes among them
is King’s College. We were impressed to see the architecture of the
college building.
At the University of Cambridge, we also went to Queens’ College,
Trinity College, and many other centres of learning. Just after
walking a few steps on the cobbled bridge across a shallow river,
we got to know that the university has a Boat Club and the boats
they use to ply on the shallow waters are called splinting boats.
After walking further, we saw many lamp posts along the road. We
were informed that C S Lewis was a professor at the Universities
of Oxford as well as Cambridge. He got the idea of writing The
Chronicles of Narnia at that very location. Further, we were
fascinated to know that Sir Isaac Newton was also a student of
the University of Cambridge. The famous story of the apple falling
on his head took place in his hometown while he was studying
there.
It was very inspiring to see the large number of educational
institutions in the campus. Since we take Trinity College exams
every year, it felt special to visit Trinity College and Trinity Street. It
truly filled our hearts with pride and joy.
After visiting several colleges, we spent some time walking around
the campus area with renwed respect and admiration for the Bard’s
works. We also realised the importance of studying Shakespeare
and why he is one of the greatest English writers.
The tour of the university campus was inspiring and all of us
returned with a strong motivation to work hard and ensure to
reserve a seat at one such premier institute someday. Thanks to
our parents, LDP teachers and school we are now very focussed
about our future.

photographs, and write poems. I enjoy
travelling and I have visited many
places across the world. Although
I have travelled to London before,
this experience was unlike any other.
Living the life of a boarder was a
great experience. Seeing the historic
buildings of London was wonderful
for Potterheads like me. On this trip,
I learnt that Lewis Carroll got the idea
of writing Alice in Wonderland by
looking at the large number of trees
visible near his dormitory window. We
also visited Stratford-upon-Avon and
rode on the London Eye. Overall, our
trip was an amazing experience.

My name is Shreya Gujaran and I study
inClass8,JankideviPublicSchool.Our
journey to the UK, especially Rugby
School, was a spectacular experience.
I met wonderful teachers and kind
students who were always ready to
help out. We visited the University of
Cambridge and Stratford-upon-Avon.
The teachers shared interesting facts
about William Shakespeare with us.
We spent some fun moments with
our friends while dancing and singing
English songs. When we had to leave
from London, my eyes were filled
with tears at the thought of leaving
my new friends. I will remember this
journey throughout my life.

My name is Triya Shah and I enjoy
writing essays in English. Writing for
the Young Authors Program was an
experience that I will cherish forever.
I got an opportunity to travel to
London and stay at Rugby School. It
was an incredible experience. I am
glad that our school decided to take
us on this trip. Every experience was
unique. Every person that we met
was special. Every day seemed really
adventurous. The best part was that
we got to experience everything in the
company of friends. We came back
with countless memories and I would
love to go on such a trip once again
in future.

I am Zara Thakar and I study in Class 6,
Jankidevi Public School. I am 10 years
old. It has always been my dream to
visit London and it finally came true.
It was fun to ride on the London Eye
and catch a breathtaking view of the
city. I made several new friends at
Rugby School and we all of us played
many games. We went to King’s Cross
and were amazed to see Platform
9¾. There was a huge Harry Potter
Store too. The best moments of this
journey were spent while watching
Shakespearean plays and exploring
London along with my friends. Overall,
our trip was wonderful.
I am Zaina Naviwala and I am a
student of Jankidevi Public School. I
am passionate about reading English
literature and the father of English
literature, William Shakespeare, is
one of my favourites. Despite all its
idiosyncrasies, English language
fascinates me. Besides being a
voracious reader, I am fond of
debating and elocution. In fact, I have
represented my school at several
inter-school as well as inter-house
competitions. I have won many
awards too. I felt privileged to explore
London in the company of students
from schools all over the world. It was
an enriching experience and I look
forward to more such trips soon.
