Ms. Shamita Bhattacharya
Principal
St. Andrews School, Hyderabad
At St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, we believe that there is no substitute for ‘education through action’ and that exploring places,
people, cultures, economic opportunities, and technological advancements through travel, complements and completes the
educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour to create responsible global citizens and dynamic leaders by
bringing the knowledge of the world to the classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world. These two methods
are critical to create the three pillars of global citizenship based on empathy, understanding, and international collaboration.
In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to the USA under a program titled EdTerra’s East Coast Space Adventure.
We chose this program for its focus on providing students useful exposure to space exploration and technology at NASA’s Kennedy
Space Center. They also visited historic and modern marvels of Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York City. To augment the broader
program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured students’ engagement and immersion. This Student Travel Review
is an outcome of this collaborative and exploratory module that our students of St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, actively participated
in. It captures the entire journey in students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from this engaging
journey to one of the world’s most advanced nations.
I would also like to recognise the efforts of EdTerra Edventures, a company that is well aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular
goals in addition to the developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially their on-journey
educator, the Journey Mentor, and Visa Assistance Services. Their professionalism has resulted in an effortless, safe and enriching
travel experience for each one of us and for the group. Each parent may feel proud of this publication that will keep reminding their
wards of their achievements and capabilities, lifelong.
Happy reading!

7. MESSAGE FROM EDTERRA
MESSAGE FROM EDTERRA
Sincerely,
Amita Bajaj
Editor - Student Publications
Dear readers,
An educational journey to foreign lands always induces learning and excitement among young and inquisitive students. When the
destination is as diverse as the USA East Coast, one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students would absorb and
construct learning out of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of India and the USA.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge through a meaningful encounter with a
new culture, without diluting their fun and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through
its Program Development Team (PDT), which comprises both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs culturally
neutral projects that enable students to meaningfully observe, record, and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed
through a process that encourages teamwork and meaningful discussions besides recording observations through digital means,
all of which is finally synthesised into a media product that showcases the ideas and learning of the students.
This Student Travel Review, ‘USA East Coast Space Edventure’, is one such media product that captures the learning of the students
of St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, on their journey to Kennedy Space Center, Orlando along with Boston, Washington, D.C., and New
York City. This book serves as a window into the USA and above all, the inspiring world of NASA, especially valuable for those students,
peers, and parents who could not be a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students, the
credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, for their efforts and support which made this educational
journey possible, with a special mention to the Principal, Ms. Shamita Bhattacharya, for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to thank
the accompanying teachers for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their energy made our work easy, and more importantly, made
for a more memorable journey for the students. We encourage you to read and re-live the learning and adventures of these students
through the words and photographs that follow.

know that One World Trade Center is the tallest building in
the Western Hemisphere. The view of New York City from its
100–102 floors was splendid.
Our journey started on 29th September, 2019 and went
on until 11th October 11, 2019. We flew from Hyderabad
to Orlando. The first day was full of fun as we visited the
Kennedy Space Center, a field centre of NASA. We learnt a lot
about space programmes and received information on future
programmes. Next day, we also had lunch with an astronaut Mr
Winston E Scott, which was awesome. We also went on a bus
tour of the facility and saw the shuttle launch pads.
Our next two days were occupied with amusement parks, Walt
Disney World and Universal Studios. Watching the Disney
parade and riding the roller-coasters was spectacular. It was
like heaven on earth for all the children. Visiting these places
had been everybody’s childhood dreams.
After that, we went to the capital state — Washington, D.C. and
visited the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum where
we got to see the actual plane that the Wright Brothers flew.
There is a piece of moonrock that is exhibited there for anyone
to see and touch. We also saw several important places like
the U.S. Capitol Building, the White House, the Senate, and the
Lincoln Memorial. That day in the afternoon, we drove to New
Jersey and spent a night there.
From New Jersey, we went to New York where we saw all the
exciting, world-famous places like the Statue of Liberty, Times
Square, and the One World Observatory. We were thrilled to

tightened and cleaned but fuel tanks were not reusable as they
were supposed to be destroyed mid-air to avoid damage to
human settlements.
Next day, we had lunch with an astronaut, Mr Winston E Scott,
where he told us what all astronauts face in space in order to
adapt to the surroundings. He told us about the number of
missions he had done, crew he had worked with, and many
other things. Later, we asked a few questions about what
inspired him to become an astronaut, how many years of
training was he given, and other such queries. We even took a
picture with him. Afterwards, we went to a rocket simulation.
After the entire tour was done, we felt that being an astronaut
or working as one of the members in the LCC is not a very
easy job. To become an astronaut, one must be determined,
hardworking, and should have an optimistic thinking at all
times.
Space looks very interesting and it is fun to explore and learn
about it. However, an astronaut’s life is very difficult. Today, we
went to the Kennedy Space Center to learn about rockets, the
health and hygiene routine followed in the space shuttles, and
the life of an astronaut in space.
At the KSC, we also learnt about the different types of buildings
presentinthefacility.TherewerebuildingsliketheVAB(Vehicle
Assembly Building) and LCC (Launch Control Center). In both
these buildings, the rockets are made and launched. We went
for a bus tour, where we saw all these buildings.
While the tour was going on, we observed that there was
liquefied hydrogen and oxygen gas. The liquefied hydrogen
gas is used as it has high-calorific value, which is the amount
of heat released while burning one kilogram of a substance.
Oxygen is added while the launching takes place, in order to
release water vapour. This water vapour reduces the sound
energy, as it is very harmful. We also looked at how rockets
were taken from the VAB to the launch pad.
We watched a movie about the Apollo 11 mission, which took
man to the moon. This rocket is the result of all the various
attempts made by NASA in order to carry out research on
the moon. Before Apollo 11, there was a rocket, Apollo 7 that
was designed to be reused. After using it, screws had to be

After the two-day tour of the Kennedy Space Center, we
were given a little break and then, we were taken to famous
amusement parks in the USA, namely Walt Disney World and
Universal Studios. We spent one day in each of the amusement
parks.
At Walt Disney World, we went to the Magic Kingdom. We saw
the Disney character parade and it was one of the best parts of
the trip. We spent a lot of time in the theme parks. Cinderella
Castle was very huge and we saw much more than what we
had expected. Walt Disney World has many exciting rides for
people of all ages. We also took a picture with Mickey Mouse.
Other famous Disney characters like Goofy, Donald Duck, and
Jasmine were also present there. We went back to the Magic
Kingdom through a ferry ride. At the end of our visit, we got to
see a spectacular display of fireworks, which provided a perfect
end to our day.
We spent a whole day at Universal Studios and the Islands
of Adventure. The most exciting ride was The Incredible Hulk
Coaster, which was a high-speed roller-coaster ride and it
thrilled us. We also went to water rides, which were the most
entertaining ones. One fun water ride was Jurassic Park River
Adventure, which is themed on the famous film franchise.
We saw people who had dressed themselves as the Avengers
and we clicked many pictures with these people. Besides the
Avengers, there were other cartoon characters as well. On
our way, we met a rock who could speak, sprinkle water on
its friends, and we had a little fun with him. Finally, we visited
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. They were successful in
making an exact copy, which made it look so real. There were
various shops selling a variety of Harry Potter merchandise.

During our trip, we visited Washington DC, the capital of the
United States of America. We visited many places such as
the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, The White
House, the U.S. Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, and the
World War II Memorial.
We reached Washington, D.C. by flight from Orlando on 3rd
October. We stayed at Hampton Inn, Washington, D.C. During
the first day of our stay, we visited the Smithsonian National
Air and Space Museum. The Smithsonian Institution is a
group of museums and research centres administered by the
Government of the United States. It was founded on 10 August,
1846, for the ‘increase and diffusion of knowledge’. The
institution is named after its founding donor, a British scientist
named James Smithson. After moving out from the museum,
we had lunch and checked into the hotel.
The following morning, we visited The White House, the U.S.
Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, and the World War
II Memorial. The White House is the official residence and
workplace of the President of the United States. It is situated at
Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Capitol Building, often called the Capitol, is the home
of the United States Congress or the seat of the legislative
branch of the U.S. Federal Government. It is located on Capitol
Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Though it does not lie in the centre geographically, the Capitol
serves as the origin point for the district’s street-numbering
system and the four quadrants.
The Lincoln Memorial was built to honour the 16th president
of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln. It is located
on the western end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
across from the Washington Monument. Henry Bacon was its
architect.
The World War II Memorial is dedicated to the American
soldiers during the Second World War. The memorial consists
of 56 pillars and a pair of small triumphal arches surrounding
a square and fountain. It was built on the former site of the
Rainbow Pool at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool between
the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. For the
next part of the journey, we visited New York City by bus.
This trip was a great experience for all of us as it brought us all
together and helped us in getting to know each other. It also
helped us in understanding the importance of teamwork and
being responsible apart from gaining knowledge about the
country and its administration. We would like to thank EdTerra
for providing us this opportunity to visit the United States of
America. We really enjoyed it.

We travelled from Washington, D.C. to New York on the
seventh day of our journey. When we entered an underwater
bridge tunnel known as the Hampton Bridge, we knew that the
distance of some miles was left.
As soon as we entered New York, we saw tall buildings and
the weather was pleasant. The roads were big and clean.
Some of the buildings were old and tall. We also visited the
One World Observatory and went on the 102nd floor. It took
70 seconds to go up to that floor and while coming down,
it only took 60 seconds. We got to know that it is the tallest
building in New York. After that, we went to one of the busiest
pedestrian crossings in the world, Times Square. That place
was so crowded. We could find people of different countries,
cultures, and religions. It was interesting to know that about
50 million people visit Times Square every year. We explored
Times Square and had the best time of our lives.
Next day, we went to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty.
It is huge and is one of the best statues ever made. The Statue
of Liberty is a great symbol of freedom and equality — the
values that the USA stands for. We spent around three hours
on Liberty Island and then, we left for Boston.
Our group had a memorable time in New York City. We want to
thank EdTerra for organising this journey.

Our journey by EdTerra Edventures
to the USA was amazing and it
ignited the minds and hearts of
students as they learnt more about
foreign countries. I was sceptical
about going there but once I went
there, I totally loved it. In Boston,
the trees were ready to invite us
and the fall season. It was heavenly.
The Kennedy Space Center was the
best.Visiting Walt Disney World and
Universal Studios reminded us of our
youthful days and adventurous spirit.
Washington, D.C., the powerhouse
of the USA, was amazing to see. In
NewYork,the Statue of Liberty made
us ponder over continuous human
efforts. I want to thank EdTerra and
our Journey Mentor,Ms Jyothi Gupta,
as they made our trip lively, lovely,
and memorable.
The confirmation of my journey to
the USA ushered along with it mixed
feelings of excitement, joy, and fear.
This adventurous trip has helped me
overcome some of my weaknesses,
explore the world with a new
perspective, and learn about the
lifestyles, cultures, and traditions of
the inhabitants of the USA. The KSC
has taught me that aspirations have
no bounds. Walt Disney World has
garnished my life with more colour,
cheerfulness, and beauty. Universal
Studios has made me more vibrant
and high-spirited. The Statue of
Liberty has reiterated to dream big
and reach for the stars. Boston is a
replica of God’s marvellous creation.
This journey is definitely going
to be one of the most cherished
experiences of my life.

The day I got to know that I would
be travelling as a lead teacher with
a group of 40 students to the USA, I
feared a bit in my heart.I really thank
God for my team of teachers and
the school management for being
such a support at every step. The
mixed feelings of thrill, excitement,
and responsibility continued with
a smile on face and confidence in
heart as we started the journey from
Hyderabad to Orlando. Our visit to
the KSC was joyful. The kids enjoyed
a lot at Walt Disney World and
Universal Studios.The Air and Space
Museum gave us extensive learning
about aerodynamics. Stepping into
the world-famous Harvard University
was awesome. Looking after the
students was challenging, but the
trip was amazing and insightful.
