Student Travel Review
Co-authored by students as part of
EdTerra’s Young Authors Program
Sincerely,
Ms. Shamita Bhattacharya
Principal
St. Andrews School, Hyderabad
At St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, we believe that there is no substitute for ‘education through action’ and that exploring places,
people, cultures, economic opportunities, and technological advancements through travel, complements and completes the
educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour to create responsible global citizens and dynamic leaders by
bringing the knowledge of the world to the classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world. These two methods
are critical to create the three pillars of global citizenship based on empathy, understanding, and international collaboration.
In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to the USA under a program titled EdTerra’s East Coast Space Adventure.
We chose this program for its focus on providing students useful exposure to space exploration and technology at NASA’s Kennedy
Space Center. They also visited historic and modern marvels of Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York City. To augment the broader
program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured students’ engagement and immersion. This Student Travel Review
is an outcome of this collaborative and exploratory module that our students of St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, actively participated
in. It captures the entire journey in students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from this engaging
journey to one of the world’s most advanced nations.
I would also like to recognise the efforts of EdTerra Edventures, a company that is well aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular
goals in addition to the developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially their on-journey
educator, the Journey Mentor, and Visa Assistance Services. Their professionalism has resulted in an effortless, safe and enriching
travel experience for each one of us and for the group. Each parent may feel proud of this publication that will keep reminding their
wards of their achievements and capabilities, lifelong.
Happy reading!

Dear readers,
An educational journey to foreign lands always induces learning and excitement among young and inquisitive students. When the
destination is as diverse as the USA East Coast, one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students would absorb and
construct learning out of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of India and the USA.
For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge through a meaningful encounter with a
new culture, without diluting their fun and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through
its Program Development Team (PDT), which comprises both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs culturally
neutral projects that enable students to meaningfully observe, record, and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed
through a process that encourages teamwork and meaningful discussions besides recording observations through digital means,
all of which is finally synthesised into a media product that showcases the ideas and learning of the students.
This Student Travel Review, ‘USA East Coast Space Edventure’, is one such media product that captures the learning of the students
of St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, on their journey to Kennedy Space Center, Orlando along with Boston, Washington, D.C., and New
York City. This book serves as a window into the USA and above all, the inspiring world of NASA, especially valuable for those students,
peers, and parents who could not be a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students, the
credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school.
EdTerra Edventures would like to thank St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, for their efforts and support which made this educational
journey possible, with a special mention to the Principal, Ms. Shamita Bhattacharya, for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to thank
the accompanying teachers for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their energy made our work easy, and more importantly, made
for a more memorable journey for the students. We encourage you to read and re-live the learning and adventures of these students
through the words and photographs that follow.

rain. Our tour guide, Mr Kevin gave us a thorough background
of the city and took us to all the amazing places. The hustle
bustle of the city, the busy Times Square, the United Nations
Headquarters, and the Statue of Liberty — all the places were
so fantastic.
Thereafter, we went to Boston, which seemed opposite to
NYC because it was so serene and calm. It was an enriching
experience as we visited Harvard and MIT. Lastly, we went to
the airport to part our ways with that country but we were
delighted that we got this opportunity.
A journey is a travel from one place to another, which takes
patience, planning, hours of moving, and mixed emotions. On
the first day, we landed in Orlando and we were jet lagged and
tired. Our excitement was at its peak when we reached Walt
Disney World. The weather was perfect for an outing. We got
to see all the Disney characters and the rides were amazing.
The next day of our trip was very different as we went to the
Kennedy Space Center, a field centre of NASA. We also had
lunch with an astronaut, Ms Barbara Morgan, which was like
a dream come true. After that, we had the fabulous experience
of going to Universal Studios. We were brave enough to go on
thrilling roller-coaster rides. At the end of the day, we could not
feel our limbs, but we were content with the places we saw and
activities we did.
Washington D.C., the capital of the United States of America
is a historic city with several monuments including the iconic
Federal Government’s three buildings, namely The U.S. Capitol
Building, the White House, and the Supreme Court. It is also
a prominent cultural centre due to the presence of several
monuments and museums.
On the first day of our visit to New York City, we went to the One
World Observatory. It was a surreal experience as we stood on
the 102nd floor and got a bird’s eye view of the city. We learnt
that One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the
Western Hemisphere. NYC looked even more beautiful in the

On the second day, we had lunch with a famous astronaut, Ms
Barbara Morgan. She was pleased with our inquisitive nature
as the students asked her many questions. It was indeed a
proud moment for us to meet such a great personality. We
understoodthatastronautshavetofaceanumberofdifficulties
to survive in space. The shuttle launch experience was amazing
and marked a great end to our educational tour.
When we reached Florida, we were excited to visit the Kennedy
Space Center, a field centre of NASA. The Kennedy Space
Center was established in 1962. Since 1968, it has been
NASA’s primary launch centre for spaceflight by humans. It is
situated in a vast area spread on the banks of Banana River.
We were pleasantly surprised to see the bonding of nature
with technology. The astronauts shared their workspace with
about 6,000 species of flora and fauna. Our expectations were
completely different from how it should have been and how
it turned out to be, as we never expected that such a space
facility could coexist with nature.
We saw the whole place on the bus tour and our guide
explained to us everything that we saw. We were astonished
to see the Vehicle Assembly Building, which is the largest
single-storey structure in the world. After the bus tour, we were
mesmerised to see the Rocket Garden. We also visited various
shuttle launch pads and Saturn V Center. We got to know that
Saturn V is the most expensive rocket to be ever built.
Everything reminded us of how much humankind has
progressed and where we have reached from early human
stage to a fully-fledged, advanced civilisation equipped with
modern means of technology. It was interesting to know that
we visited one of the biggest space facilities available.

Walt Disney has touched the lives of many dreamers, children,
and adults who grew up in the world of imagination, fantasy,
and dreamland. We feel connected to his dream as we
experienced the theme park ourselves. Walt Disney World is
probably the happiest place on the planet. We started our joy
tour from the ferry ride at Magic Kingdom. There are several
zones inside the theme park. There are different types of shows
and character parades going on every day. The star of the
show, Mickey Mouse, remains the most iconic character even
at the age of 91. His existence invokes the idea that all of these
smaller story worlds are part of something bigger, something
uniquely magical. The ‘Disney parade was the most exciting
and thrilling part of the amusement park. We also enjoyed
watching the spectacular display of fireworks over Cinderella
Castle. It was a day spent well.
Universal Studios in Orlando is another exciting amusement
park, especially because it offers thrilling rides and other
fun activities. We went inside Super Hero Marvel Island to
meet some of our favourite superheroes. The visitors can
also see behind-the-scenes of filming motion pictures by
any production under this banner. The most famous place
of Universal Studios is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
with its popular ride — Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike
Adventure. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is another
exciting roller-coaster ride. The other thing that we enjoyed is
Dr Bruce Banner’s hidden beastly side that dwells within him.
Riding The Incredible Hulk Coaster was so exhilarating.
While Walt Disney World lets you see the yesteryears of
cartoons and Disney characters, on the other hand, Universal
Studios takes you to the advanced world of movie production
and Marvel characters. The Marvel characters fight like a pro
and sense dangers in advance. Overall, we enjoyed visiting
amusement parks a lot. It was like a dream come true for all
students.

Curiosity was at its peak when we started from Baltimore to
Washington D.C, one of the most powerful cities of the world
and the capital of the United States of America. It was a long
drive, but it did not rob us from our excitement to visit all the
iconic monuments that we see on the television all the time.
Firstly, we went to the iconic Smithsonian National Air and
Space Museum. We got to know how the astronauts live and
work in space. The most interesting part of our visit was to see
the 1903 Wright Flyer other than all the other exhibits. We
could also see and touch a piece of moonrock at the museum.
Next day, we visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial, which
was built to pay tribute to the soldiers who fought against
North Korea in order to help South Korea. In Washington,
D.C., we also visited the Lincoln Memorial to learn about the
important role he played in the formation and unification of
the United States.
On our visit to Washington, D.C., we learnt about the legislative
branch of the United States Government. The Federal
Government of the USA has a bicameral legislature. It consists
of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Both the houses are chosen through direct elections. The two
houses are collectively known as the U.S. Congress. There are a
total of 535 voting members with 435 members of the House
of Representatives and 100 Senators. The U.S. Capitol Building
houses the legislative branch, one of the three branches of
the Federal Government. We were excited to see the buildings
from where power is exercised in the United States.

New York City is a popular tourist destination. It is also known
as ‘the city that never sleeps’. When we visited that place, it
upheld its image and name. It is the most populated as well
as the most diverse places in the United States of America.
People belonging to varied religions, races, and ethnicities live
here who speak a number of languages. In 2012, the gross
metropolitan product of the New York metropolitan area was
about $1.3 trillion with a population of nearly 20.3 million.
New York is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn,
Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Some of these five major
areas are divided by rivers and thus connected via a bridge
or a ferry. It is also the first capital city of the USA. New York
City is home to the famous Times Square where thousands
of tourists come all round the year. It is estimated that about
50 million visitors come to Times Square annually. Today, it is
recognised as the global centre for finance, media, arts, and
entertainment. We shopped a lot at Times Square.
The Statue of Liberty National Monument is situated on Liberty
Island in New York Harbour. It represents freedom and the USA
as a nation itself. We also visited the One World Observatory
from where we saw the whole city and many other places
standing on the 100–102 floors. We relaxed at Central Park
and took many pictures. The expensive and glamorous Fifth
Avenue was a sight to behold. For every person who is fond of
shopping, it is a dream destination.
We enjoyed the food that we had in New York. The most
exciting thing was that one Indian meal was included in the
food every day.

  • 5. Sincerely, Ms. Shamita Bhattacharya Principal St. Andrews School, Hyderabad At St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, we believe that there is no substitute for ‘education through action’ and that exploring places, people, cultures, economic opportunities, and technological advancements through travel, complements and completes the educational experience. This philosophy matches our endeavour to create responsible global citizens and dynamic leaders by bringing the knowledge of the world to the classroom as well as encouraging students to go out into the world. These two methods are critical to create the three pillars of global citizenship based on empathy, understanding, and international collaboration. In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to the USA under a program titled EdTerra’s East Coast Space Adventure. We chose this program for its focus on providing students useful exposure to space exploration and technology at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. They also visited historic and modern marvels of Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York City. To augment the broader program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured students’ engagement and immersion. This Student Travel Review is an outcome of this collaborative and exploratory module that our students of St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, actively participated in. It captures the entire journey in students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from this engaging journey to one of the world’s most advanced nations. I would also like to recognise the efforts of EdTerra Edventures, a company that is well aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular goals in addition to the developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially their on-journey educator, the Journey Mentor, and Visa Assistance Services. Their professionalism has resulted in an effortless, safe and enriching travel experience for each one of us and for the group. Each parent may feel proud of this publication that will keep reminding their wards of their achievements and capabilities, lifelong. Happy reading! • 7. MESSAGE FROM EDTERRA MESSAGE FROM EDTERRA Sincerely, Amita Bajaj Editor - Student Publications Dear readers, An educational journey to foreign lands always induces learning and excitement among young and inquisitive students. When the destination is as diverse as the USA East Coast, one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students would absorb and construct learning out of the many differences and similarities that mark the cultures and people of India and the USA. For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge through a meaningful encounter with a new culture, without diluting their fun and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program Development Team (PDT), which comprises both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs culturally neutral projects that enable students to meaningfully observe, record, and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed through a process that encourages teamwork and meaningful discussions besides recording observations through digital means, all of which is finally synthesised into a media product that showcases the ideas and learning of the students. This Student Travel Review, ‘USA East Coast Space Edventure’, is one such media product that captures the learning of the students of St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, on their journey to Kennedy Space Center, Orlando along with Boston, Washington, D.C., and New York City. This book serves as a window into the USA and above all, the inspiring world of NASA, especially valuable for those students, peers, and parents who could not be a part of the program. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students, the credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school. EdTerra Edventures would like to thank St. Andrews School, Hyderabad, for their efforts and support which made this educational journey possible, with a special mention to the Principal, Ms. Shamita Bhattacharya, for guiding us. EdTerra would also like to thank the accompanying teachers for being so dynamic and enthusiastic. Their energy made our work easy, and more importantly, made for a more memorable journey for the students. We encourage you to read and re-live the learning and adventures of these students through the words and photographs that follow.

  • 12. 7 12 rain. Our tour guide, Mr Kevin gave us a thorough background of the city and took us to all the amazing places. The hustle bustle of the city, the busy Times Square, the United Nations Headquarters, and the Statue of Liberty — all the places were so fantastic. Thereafter, we went to Boston, which seemed opposite to NYC because it was so serene and calm. It was an enriching experience as we visited Harvard and MIT. Lastly, we went to the airport to part our ways with that country but we were delighted that we got this opportunity. A journey is a travel from one place to another, which takes patience, planning, hours of moving, and mixed emotions. On the first day, we landed in Orlando and we were jet lagged and tired. Our excitement was at its peak when we reached Walt Disney World. The weather was perfect for an outing. We got to see all the Disney characters and the rides were amazing. The next day of our trip was very different as we went to the Kennedy Space Center, a field centre of NASA. We also had lunch with an astronaut, Ms Barbara Morgan, which was like a dream come true. After that, we had the fabulous experience of going to Universal Studios. We were brave enough to go on thrilling roller-coaster rides. At the end of the day, we could not feel our limbs, but we were content with the places we saw and activities we did. Washington D.C., the capital of the United States of America is a historic city with several monuments including the iconic Federal Government’s three buildings, namely The U.S. Capitol Building, the White House, and the Supreme Court. It is also a prominent cultural centre due to the presence of several monuments and museums. On the first day of our visit to New York City, we went to the One World Observatory. It was a surreal experience as we stood on the 102nd floor and got a bird’s eye view of the city. We learnt that One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. NYC looked even more beautiful in the OUR JOURNEY Written and photographed by: Aashutosh, Abhiram, Adarsh, Aditya, Aishwarya, Ajitesh, Anishka, Esha, & Kushal

  • 14. 7 14 The Observatory Deck is the closest one can get to, for witnessing a rocket launch
  • 15. 7 15 Excitement before amusement — Disney has certainly figured out the business of entertainment
  • 16. 7 16 We learnt about different stages of development of NASA’s space exploration through exhibits at the KSC
  • 17. 7 17 We were amazed to see how Universal Studios had created immersive experiences for film fans

  • 20. 7 20 KENNEDY SPACE CENTER Written and photographed by: Eshaan, Eswar, Goathri, Gongathi, Heeraj, Immanuel, Issac, Kiranmai, & Krishna On the second day, we had lunch with a famous astronaut, Ms Barbara Morgan. She was pleased with our inquisitive nature as the students asked her many questions. It was indeed a proud moment for us to meet such a great personality. We understoodthatastronautshavetofaceanumberofdifficulties to survive in space. The shuttle launch experience was amazing and marked a great end to our educational tour. When we reached Florida, we were excited to visit the Kennedy Space Center, a field centre of NASA. The Kennedy Space Center was established in 1962. Since 1968, it has been NASA’s primary launch centre for spaceflight by humans. It is situated in a vast area spread on the banks of Banana River. We were pleasantly surprised to see the bonding of nature with technology. The astronauts shared their workspace with about 6,000 species of flora and fauna. Our expectations were completely different from how it should have been and how it turned out to be, as we never expected that such a space facility could coexist with nature. We saw the whole place on the bus tour and our guide explained to us everything that we saw. We were astonished to see the Vehicle Assembly Building, which is the largest single-storey structure in the world. After the bus tour, we were mesmerised to see the Rocket Garden. We also visited various shuttle launch pads and Saturn V Center. We got to know that Saturn V is the most expensive rocket to be ever built. Everything reminded us of how much humankind has progressed and where we have reached from early human stage to a fully-fledged, advanced civilisation equipped with modern means of technology. It was interesting to know that we visited one of the biggest space facilities available.

  • 28. 7 28 Walt Disney has touched the lives of many dreamers, children, and adults who grew up in the world of imagination, fantasy, and dreamland. We feel connected to his dream as we experienced the theme park ourselves. Walt Disney World is probably the happiest place on the planet. We started our joy tour from the ferry ride at Magic Kingdom. There are several zones inside the theme park. There are different types of shows and character parades going on every day. The star of the show, Mickey Mouse, remains the most iconic character even at the age of 91. His existence invokes the idea that all of these smaller story worlds are part of something bigger, something uniquely magical. The ‘Disney parade was the most exciting and thrilling part of the amusement park. We also enjoyed watching the spectacular display of fireworks over Cinderella Castle. It was a day spent well. Universal Studios in Orlando is another exciting amusement park, especially because it offers thrilling rides and other fun activities. We went inside Super Hero Marvel Island to meet some of our favourite superheroes. The visitors can also see behind-the-scenes of filming motion pictures by any production under this banner. The most famous place of Universal Studios is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter with its popular ride — Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is another exciting roller-coaster ride. The other thing that we enjoyed is Dr Bruce Banner’s hidden beastly side that dwells within him. Riding The Incredible Hulk Coaster was so exhilarating. While Walt Disney World lets you see the yesteryears of cartoons and Disney characters, on the other hand, Universal Studios takes you to the advanced world of movie production and Marvel characters. The Marvel characters fight like a pro and sense dangers in advance. Overall, we enjoyed visiting amusement parks a lot. It was like a dream come true for all students. • 36. 7 36 Curiosity was at its peak when we started from Baltimore to Washington D.C, one of the most powerful cities of the world and the capital of the United States of America. It was a long drive, but it did not rob us from our excitement to visit all the iconic monuments that we see on the television all the time. Firstly, we went to the iconic Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. We got to know how the astronauts live and work in space. The most interesting part of our visit was to see the 1903 Wright Flyer other than all the other exhibits. We could also see and touch a piece of moonrock at the museum. Next day, we visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial, which was built to pay tribute to the soldiers who fought against North Korea in order to help South Korea. In Washington, D.C., we also visited the Lincoln Memorial to learn about the important role he played in the formation and unification of the United States. On our visit to Washington, D.C., we learnt about the legislative branch of the United States Government. The Federal Government of the USA has a bicameral legislature. It consists of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. Both the houses are chosen through direct elections. The two houses are collectively known as the U.S. Congress. There are a total of 535 voting members with 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 Senators. The U.S. Capitol Building houses the legislative branch, one of the three branches of the Federal Government. We were excited to see the buildings from where power is exercised in the United States. • 44. 7 44 New York City is a popular tourist destination. It is also known as ‘the city that never sleeps’. When we visited that place, it upheld its image and name. It is the most populated as well as the most diverse places in the United States of America. People belonging to varied religions, races, and ethnicities live here who speak a number of languages. In 2012, the gross metropolitan product of the New York metropolitan area was about $1.3 trillion with a population of nearly 20.3 million. New York is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Some of these five major areas are divided by rivers and thus connected via a bridge or a ferry. It is also the first capital city of the USA. New York City is home to the famous Times Square where thousands of tourists come all round the year. It is estimated that about 50 million visitors come to Times Square annually. Today, it is recognised as the global centre for finance, media, arts, and entertainment. We shopped a lot at Times Square. The Statue of Liberty National Monument is situated on Liberty Island in New York Harbour. It represents freedom and the USA as a nation itself. We also visited the One World Observatory from where we saw the whole city and many other places standing on the 100–102 floors. We relaxed at Central Park and took many pictures. The expensive and glamorous Fifth Avenue was a sight to behold. For every person who is fond of shopping, it is a dream destination. We enjoyed the food that we had in New York. The most exciting thing was that one Indian meal was included in the food every day. NEW YORK Written and photographed by: Krupa, Michael, Mohana, Omkar, Pruthvi, Sahitya, Shlok, Surya, & Sudhakara
