These two methodsareessentialtocreateempathy,understandingandInternationalcollaboration. In line with this mission, our students recently journeyed to Italy and Greece. We chose this program for its focus on exposing students to the rich culture and history of two of Europe’s most-sought after destinations, Italy and Greece. To augment the broader program, we selected the Young Authors Program, which ensured students’ engagement and experience. This Student Travel Chronicle is an outcome of this collaborative and exploratory module. It captures the entire journey in students’ own words and photographs. It even showcases their learning from the intense, eight-day interaction with the world’s most successful democratic nations. I would also like to recognize the efforts of EdTerra Edventures; a Truly Educational School Trips company that is well aware of co-curricular and extra-curricular goals and developmental needs of students. We acknowledge the contribution of their staff, especially their on-journey educator, the Journey Mentor and Visa Assistance Services. Their professionalism made the journey effortless, safe and enriching for each one of us. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the students, who participated and engaged with the program enthusiastically. A journey to foreign soil is always replete with learning and excitement for any young and inquisitive mind. ‘When the destination country is Italy, so fabulously rich in history and architecture, one can only imagine the myriad ways in which Indian students may absorb and construct learning out of a meaningful encounter with its people and culture. For EdTerra, an educational journey is about enabling students to construct knowledge through a meaningful encounter with new cultures, without diluting their fun and excitement or restricting their wandering, curious minds. EdTerra achieves this through its Program Development Team (PDT), which is comprised of both Indian and international experts. The PDT carefully designs culturally neutral tools that enable students to meaningfully observe, record and articulate their impressions. These tools are deployed through a process that encourages teamwork, meaningful discussions, recording observations through digital media and finally synthesizing all this into a media product that showcases the ideas and learning of the students. This publication, ‘Italy and Greece’, is one such media product that captures the 8 day journey of learning of the gifted students of Campion School, Mumbai, in images and words. This beautiful book serves as a window into the Italian and Greek experience for those students, peers and parents who could not be a part of the journey. It showcases the intellectual and creative capacities of the students, credit for which is rightfully due to their parents and school. OUR JOURNEY Written and photographed by: Jevin, Kabir, Mrudgandh, Naman & Soham The journey to two of the most historically and culturally rich European countires, Italy and Greece, was the most mesmerizing trip for us. Italy along with Greece is known to be the birthplace of western culture. Both these countries are famous for their art and architecture, which is magnificently displayed in their museums and monuments. In Italy, the first place to experience art was Rome. On a chilly Thursday morning, we started our journey by visiting Trevi Fountain in Rome. It is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. It is a fantastic work of art. It is a famous belief that if we throw a coin over the shoulders into the water, all our wishes will come true. After visiting the fountain, we attended a workshop on pizza making. We made delicious pizzas under the guidance of a master chef. Our first day was a blast and we really enjoyed it. Our next day started early with a loud wakeup call at 6:45 am. Soon, we were ready to visit the famous city of the Pope, Vatican City. We were joined by our guide who gave us the tour of the Vatican Museum.This museum had many painting of famous artists. Following this, we explored the city of Rome. We visited the Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum which we explored from the outside. The entire city of Rome was like a history book that had come to life. On our way from Rome to Bologna, we visited the enchanting city of Pisa. At this wonderful destination, we saw the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Here, we were told the reason of the tower leaning. The reason was that the tower was constructed on soft ground and the ground had difficulty in supporting the weight of the tower. Hence, when they started constructing the third floor the tower started leaning. Bologna provided us with a refreshing rest at night and we geared up the next morning to visit Modena. Here, we headed to the Ferrari Museum, where we got valuable information about the life and work of the creator of Ferrari cars, Enzo Ferrari. We also saw an exhibition of the modern and old cars designed by Ferrari. We even took a tour of the Ferrari factory where the posh Ferrari cars are made. We ended this magnificent tour at the private race track of the Ferrari drivers. After the Rome, we set off for our journey to the beautiful and captivating city of Venice; its history and its architecture is mesmerizing. We were told that Venice is made up of 118 islands. Venice is famous for glass creations and we got an opportunity to visit a glass factory. We also saw two most famous bridges in Venice. It was an amazing experience for each of us to see a popular and fascinating city like Venice. Once we finished exploring Venice, we drove to Milan where we visited the famous Milan Cathedral. Then we took a flight to Athens, the capital of Greece. The next day we drove to Delphi to explore the ruins of the Temple of Apollo. We were transported to a completely different world there. We also visited the Delphi Archaeological Musuem. The last day was the best as we joined huge crowds to visit Athen’s most famous monument, the Acropolis. The view of the city from the Acropolis is a memory we will have in our minds and hearts forever. 07

ROME
ROME Written and photographed by: Aseem, Chirayu, Hanumesh, Siddhaanth & Vivaan One of the most visited and highly complex cities in the Italy is Rome. We started our tour by visiting the Trevi Fountain. This fountain is a remarkable work of art which is more than a sculpture. Legend has it that if you take a coin in your right hand and throw the coin over your left shoulder into the fountain, all your wishes will come true. After visiting Trevi Fountain, we made our way to a workshop for making pizza. We learned the tricks of pizza making, and then made pizza for ourselves. It is true, that when we cook something with our own hands, it is the tastiest food. And so was this pizza. Tastiest in the world. Total Italian bliss! This was it for the day. The very next day we left for Vatican City. It has the most huge, impressive and beautiful church, St. Peter’s Basilica. We learnt about the history of the church, paintings and sculptures. It was an amazing and remarkable museum. We also learnt about two types of statues, viz, Classical and Hellenistic. After this, we went to various churches and chapels and then to the Colosseum which is believed to be the biggest and grandest amphitheatre which was used for gladiator fights and games. It was a popular site for spectators to view the mock sea battles (for only short time), hunting animals, executions, re- enactments of famous battles and dramas based on Classical mythology. The theatre was used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later re-used for different purposes such as housing for poor people, conducting workshops, quarters for religious orders, a fortress, a quarry and even as a Christian shrine. It was a magnificent and spectacular sight. Unfortunately, we couldn’t go inside. We, then, moved on to the Spanish Steps. We learnt about the history of the Spanish Steps. Then, we split into groups to climb these steps. While walking and climbing these steps, we imagined what it would have felt like to be a Roman emperor. How overwhelming would it have been for emperors to view Italy from these steps! Rome is known for its fashion labels, and we saw many outlets in the area of Spanish Steps. Some of us bought purses for our mothers. This was the last leg of our tour in Rome which was very interesting and enchanting. At the end of our visit, we learnt that Rome has an enchanting history, with many hidden secrets to discover and stories to tell! But the question is, “ARE WE READY TO LISTEN”? 15

MODENA
MODENA Written and photographed by: Aditya, Daniel, Pruthvi, Rian & Soham Modena is an ancient city, famously known for its automotive industries, as it is filled with many sports car making factories. Today, we got an opportunity to visit the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena, followed by a visit to the neighbouring town of Maranello, where we visited the Ferrari Factory, the Ferrari Museum and the Ferrari race track where F1 drivers practice. At the Enzo Ferrari Museum, we watched a short movie on the life of the creator of Ferrari cars, Enzo Ferrari. His story and journey was an inspiration to us. He was an Italian motor racing driver and an entrepreneur who had a unique design sense, and has created some of the best cars in the world. We saw different models of Ferrari cars - LA Ferrari California, 458 Italia, replicas of the engines (V8, V12), (V6 for Maserati) and many more. Some car models were dating back to 1948. The racing history of Ferrari cars are beyond imagination. In Maranello, we boarded a bus that toured us around the Ferrari Factory. We saw the different parts of the factory where different parts of the cars are created. During the tour, our guide told us about the main buyers of Ferrari cars being from United States of America, China, Russia, United Kingdom and India, and in Europe, from, Germany, Italy and France. They produce about 30 cars a day. It takes 6 weeks to produce a car and another 8 months to deliver it. We also came to know that in comparison to Ferrari who produce 300 engines, Maserati produces 1000 engines in a year. The engines of the Ferrari cars are produced in two factories in Modena which are huge and the only two of its kind in the world. It also has a research centre and a team of 3,400 engineers who work in these factories. It was interesting to know that Ferrari cars and their parts are not available in advance. They are made on orders and are then handcrafted. Once the cars are ready, they go for test drives which are conducted by specialized people. The competitors of Ferrari cars are Lamborghini and Ducati. The F7 drivers come to Italy before the season for training. The street Ferraris are tested on the Fiorano Circuit racing track, while the F1 is tested in Barcelona. Our tour to one of the world’s famous sports cars was thrilling and overwhelming. We enjoyed this part of our trip the most. 23

VENICE
VENICE Written and photographed by: Agastya, Ambar, Tanish, Vidit & Shourya After visiting the beautiful city of Modena, we embarked on a beautiful drive to Padova. Enroute we stopped for lunch at Pisa, where we got time to visit the Square of Miracles and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We continued our drive to Padova and reached in the evening. The next morning, we made our way to the boat boarding area, and once aboard the speed boat, we soon reached the enchanting city of Venice, made of 118 islands and 400 bridges. As we proceeded, we saw a huge equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of united Italy. Before his rule, Venice was an independent city. We gradually moved towards St. Mark’s Square. We were all ears when our tour guide told us about the history of Venice. She described to us the Clock Tower and its relevance to the island. She pointed out two statues and a bell on top of the Clock Tower, and told us that the statues were called the Moors and they ring the bell every hour, for the past 2000 years. Initially, the process of ringing the bell was done manually, but in the year 2000 this was updated and made automatic. Below this level is the winged Lion of Saint Mark holding a bible. This is also a symbol of the city of Venice. At St. Mark’s Square, we saw the Doge’s Palace, also known as Palazzo Ducale. This is one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice. This palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Republic of Venice. Later, this palace was opened as a museum in 1923. Next, we visited a famous Murano glass factory. Here, we got a chance to see the centuries- old tradition of glassblowing and transforming them into magnificent glass sculptures. We then shopped for some glass products from the factory showroom. After a sumptous lunch, we went for a much- awaited gondola ride. A gondola is similar to a canoe, except that it is narrower than a canoe. It is propelled by a gondolier, who uses a rowing oar, which is not fastened to the hull, in a sculling manner and acts as the rudder. The Grand Canal is the main waterway of Venice and the major water-traffic corridor in the city. Water buses and private water taxis are the main mode of public transport available for local people. After enjoying the gondola ride, we spent some time shopping for souvenirs at the gigantic St. Marks’s Square. After the wonderful experience at Venice, we waved goodbye to this glorious city and headed back to Padova. 31

ATHENS & DELPHI
ATHENS & DELPHI Written and photographed by: Hiranyam, Manvir, Shantanu, Vedaant & Viraj Once we completed the first part of our journey of exploring Italy, we made our way to sunny Greece. We landed in Athens, and the following day we traveled to the navel of the earth, Delphi. This historic city was also known as the sanctuary of Pythia, the oracle or the priestess who was consulted about the important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. Pythia was highly-regarded, for it was believed that she channelled prophecies from the Greek God Apollo himself. Delphi is a very beautiful place which has tremendous architecture and a great history. We visited the Delphi Archaeological Museum, which is home to extensive artifacts unearthed during excavations at Delphi and nearby areas. It is operated by the Greek Ministry of Culture. As, we walked around we saw various ancient structures that are made of stone. There are also numerous statues that are broken, but nonetheless beautiful. Later, we followed the path along the Sacred Way to the Sanctuary (temple) of Apollo, the path which was followed by the ancient pilgrims. On the way to the Temple of Apollo, there are many ancient treasuries and monuments. The Temple of Apollo has always been the focus of Delphi, be it during ancient times or in the current world. We saw a statue of a Charioteer of Delphi, also known as Heniokhos. It is the best-known statue surviving from the Ancient Greece and is considered one of the finest examples of ancient bronze sculptures. This charioteer has the most beautiful eyes.The site was marvellous and the museum was amazing. The museum is filled with paintings, inscriptions and statues. They are all detailed to the minutest fold. Our team, ‘Viraj and the Chipmunks’ trekked throughout the site. We were diligently following our guide, Depi, a Greek lady who knew the history and the significance of the place thoroughly. We loved the Temple of Apollo which is famous for its oracle. Ancient Greek temples are mostly famous for the oracle it contains, where pilgrims from all over ancient world would come to have their fortunes told. After Delphi, we explored the city of Athens. Our guide gave us interesting information about the city. the icing on the cake was our visit to the pride of Athens, the Acropolis. We were amazed by the structures within the Acropolis, including the Temple of Athena Nike and the Parthenon. The site was very, very crowded and we ere pushed up in a crowd and came down to the entrance in a crowd. We loved this trip and were awestruck by the beauty and wish to see such beautiful places again. By the end of this day, we felt that it is better to enrich our soul with beauty and calm our minds by visiting such magnificent places than to follow the normal routine of our daily life. Places like this take us to a different world where life was very different from our current modern world. 39

I am an expert in computer coding. When I got an opportunity to visit Italy and Greece, I grabbed it at once. The trip was indeed very informative and gave me an insight into the life of kings, emperors and popes. I truly enjoyed my trip. My name is Soham Gawade. I am from Campion School, Mumbai. I love playing cricket and football. EdTerra Edventures planned a trip for us to Italy and Greece. Before leaving for the trip, I learnt many things such as being independent and packing my own bag. This was something I never learnt before. As this was my first trip abroad, I was a bit nervous. When we reached Italy, we visited several beautiful places like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Vatican City, also known as the City of the Pope, and many more. My favourite hobbies are travelling and reading about animals. History is one of my favourite subjects. I like observing magnificent structures like Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world. I am a keen learner and always interested to learn the culture of different places. Travelling to Italy and Greece enhanced my thinking capability and satisfied my curiosity. I acquired abundant knowledge by surfing through the museums and witnessing ancient history through my own eyes. The love for my favourite subject has grown with this. My travel with EdTerra Edventures will always be a notable part of my life. Hey! I am Hanumesh Jaiswal from Campion School. I study in Class 8. EdTerra Edventures, a well-known student travel company, planned a trip to Italy and Greece for my school. When I first heard about the trip, I was very excited. My love to explore new places gave me more reasons to go on this trip. I play cricket and football. My favourite subject is mathematics and I love to solve sums. I am an animal lover especially dogs and cats. The best thing about this trip was the way we were taken care of and treated, which impressed me the most. My hobby is to play cricket. During my trip, the thing I liked most is the Trevi Fountain in Rome and the gondola ride in Venice. I was stunned to see Michelangelo’s painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. I also loved making my own pizza during our pizza making workshop. The view from the top of the Spanish Steps was incredible. Overall, my trip was fabulous. The most twisted point in our journey was when our flight from Milan to Athens got cancelled and we took another flight. Siddhant Samant Hey! I am Siddhant from Campion School. Activities such as reading and writing interests me a lot. Acting is an important part of my life, as I belong to the India’s most famous Bollywood city. My passion for acting has given me opportunity to act in two movies till now. People around me mostly remember me for my wide knowledge and my sense of humour. I also like poetry and stories. I like subjects like science and literature. I aspire to study in IIT. Though, I have kept my option of becoming an actor open. I totally enjoyed my trip with EdTerra to Greece and Italy.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS Vivan Shah 53 Hey! My name is Vivan Shah. I love cricket and swimming. Our school, alongwith with EdTerra Edventures, planned a trip to Italy and Greece. I was very excited and thrilled about it. My parents came to the airport to drop me. We were a total of 25 students from our school. We went to many places like Spanish Steps, the Vatican City and many more. This trip was a perfect example of gaining knowledge through experience. I am thankful to my parents, my teachers and my team for making this journey successful. I am blessed to have visited these beautiful countries. It was an unforgettable experience.
MODENA Aditya Betgeri Daniel Fernandez Pruthvi Jain It has always been a dream for me to explore places but when I got a chance to travel with EdTerra Edventures, it was an irresistible offer, and a big gift for me. The trip took us through the history of Greeks and Romans, the wonderful discoveries, architecture, culture, trade and glory of ancient Europeans. It further became exciting when we were asked to form groups to do our projects. I also got a chance to fulfil my wishes at Trevi fountain in Rome. I loved this tour which was filled with wonders, love, learning and overall fun. EdTerra is truly a wonderful organisation which understood our needs and was ready to help us. Hey! Playing football and cricket excites me. The journey to the European continent was amazing! It was very tiring though. But traveling with friends brought back the energy in me. In Italy, we visited places like Rome, Modena, Venice, Bologna, Vatican City and Milan. In Greece, we went to Athens and Delphi. While exploring Greece, we learnt a lot about goddess Athena and Greek architecture. I am impressed by their history and wish to travel to similar places in the future. I really had a great time. Hey! My name is Daniel Fernandez and I study in Campion School, Mumbai. I love being in the midst of nature and in the outdoors. I play football and basketball. I go for swimming too. EdTerra Edventures took us on an educational trip to Italy and Greece. We travelled by Emirates from Mumbai to Rome, via Dubai. It was an incredible flight. In Rome, we first saw the Trevi fountain and we ate Italy’s famous gelato. We visited the Vatican City the next day. We also saw the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. My trip was totally marvellous. I wish to come back and visit these places again and explore more. I am also happy to get the chance to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain. We visited six places in Italy including Rome, Vatican City, Modena, Bologna, Venice and Milan. The two places we visited in Greece were Athens and Delphi. This was my first International trip without any family members accompanying me. Wow! I had a great time throughout and had lot of fun with my friends and my team (RASDAP). We giggled and chuckled and cracked a great number of jokes together. THIS WAS THE GREATESTTRIP OF MY LIFE.

51 Agastya Pandya Ambar Juneja Hi! My name is Agastya Pandya. I am from Campion School. I study in Class 6. I love to travel and explore new places. This year when our school planned a trip to Italy and Greece with EdTerra Edventures, I was sure of grabbing this opportunity. But, at home, I had to work hard to convince my parents to agree for this trip. Wow! They finally did. This was my first trip with EdTerra Edventures. We visited many places in Italy like Rome, Modena, Padova, Venice, Athens, Pisa, Delphi and saw some amazing sculptures, artifacts and architecture of ancient times. This was a great experience for me to learn and see many amazing artifacts of the past, which have many stories to tell. I would like to thank my school, EdTerra Edventures and our teachers for this trip. I am Ambar Juneja from Campion School. I am 12 years old. I live in Mumbai. I love reading and playing video games. My name is Shourya Saraf. I study in Class 6 in Campion School. I love to play badminton and I look forward to becoming a badminton player in the future. I want to set up a big business of my own and keep my family happy. I have good leadership qualities. I am quite fond of literature and this trip enriched my literature further. Travelling is an important part of my life. Thus, I will always cherish my trip to Greece and Italy. I wish to work with EdTerra when I grow up. Tanish Gupta I amTanish Gupta, a responsible 12 year old boy, studying at Campion School, Mumbai. I represent my school in cricket. My favourite subject is science, though biology is my most preferred subject. I am a good speaker. Technology excites me and that is the reason I took part in K-12 camp’s gaming course. I like to do many things in my life such as exploring new places, going outdoors, watching action movies, listening to pop music, eating chocolates and pizzas and meeting friendly people. My zeal to travel made me come to Italy and Greece. Moreover, Italy is famous for its pizzas, pastas and gelato whereas in Greece the people are very friendly. I felt privileged travelling with EdTerra to Greece and Italy. I am 11 years old and I study in Campion school, one of the best schools in Maharashtra. I am a vivid reader and love fantasy and mythical stories. I also love writing. I want to publish my own book. EdTerra has made my wish come true. Now, I love writing even more. 51 Hiranyam Gupta Maanvir Kamani Hi! My name is Hiranyam Gupta. I am very fond of reading. After our final exams, we were told about a trip to the most beautiful places, Italy and Greece. I heard a lot about these places and was very excited to go. During this trip, we walked a lot and our tiny feet were tired. This trip was very special for me as I was travelling without my parents. I have never been away from them. So, this was bit scary for me. But I overcame my fear and travelled without them. I would miss them and felt home sick at times. On this trip, we were the noisiest group and enjoyed making noise. My name is Maanvir Kamani and I and I am from Campion School. I study in Class 7. I love playing sports like football, basketball and cricket. I am also a good singer and a good speaker. My favourite subject is science. I also like playing video games as they help me to relax. Our trip to Italy and Greece was an enjoyable experiences. The places we visited had a really nice ambience and we felt welcomed and comfortable. ABOUT THE AUTHORS 58 ATHENS AND DELPHI Shantanu Chavan Hey! I am Shantanu and I study in Class 7. My hobbies are playing cricket and going swimming. When I came to know about the trip to Italy and Greece, I was instantly geared up to be a part of it. We visited Rome, Modena, Padova, Venice, Athens, Pisa and Delphi. Some of the famous sites we visited during our journey were the Colosseum, Spanish Steps and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This was a really good experience for me, as I learnt a lot about their ancient history, beliefs and stories. I feel grateful to my school, EdTerra and our teachers for arranging this trip. It is the best example of experiential and visual learning. The stories I heard and the places I visited will always be in my memory. Vedaant Poddar Hello! I am Vedaant Poddar from Mumbai. I was very excited when EdTerra Edventures came to our school. They came to invite us for a 9 day educational trip to Italy and Greece. They told us about the places they planned to take us to, and also played a quiz with us. Our amazing journey started with Rome. We first went to Trevi Fountain. Here, there is a superstitious belief that if we throw a coin with our right hand over the left arm, all our wishes will come true. I enjoyed each and every place we visited and was amazed to see the beautiful architecture, artifacts and rich history of each place. EdTerra gave me the chance to go on an enjoyable yet educational trip to Italy and Greece. I love reading and writing a lot. And this trip gave me the perfect opportunity to combine learning with fun. I researched about each place which was mentioned in our itinerary and learnt about its historical significance. 51 ABOUT THE AUTHORS 60 TEACHERS CELIA ANN ROBINSON I am working with Campion School for the last 32 years and coordinating the Pre Primary and Primary sections for the last 15 years. I am extremely passionate about all that I do and take opportunities thrown at me seriously & with utmost sincerity. I was delighted to be a part of this trip to Europe in May 2018. It was a wonderfully organised trip by EdTerra; every detail was looked into so as to make it a tour worth remembering for all. Ms. Christine, who accompanied us, was always available and saw to our well being on the entire tour. The entire trip left us mesmerized and awestruck!
