2. Existing Product
One of existing products that I take inspiration from when planning for my music
video is this K-pop group called BTS and they came out with the song called run and
the music video concept is a key inspiration of my music video. What I have analysed
about the music video is that concept overall is about seven of the friends living life
and having fun with different moments of them partying and running around like
teenagers or young adults do in their prime. And this is very similar to what I have in
plan for my own music video. The music videos has different close ups of each
member of something happening to them something wild or crazy but then it pans to
a long shot but then again close up shots of all seven of them running across the
field. Adding to that there is also another shot in the music video of on outsiders
point of view when walking in to the room and seeing all seven members partying
but as soon as you walk in it goes slow motion which is a very interesting effect to
have. Another that I have noticed in this music video that the overall colour grading
of this music video It is quite gloomy or it is in the dark side of the neutral palette
which in contrast to the events in the music video you would expect it to be bright
coloured to fit the mood but it is neutral based but it's very fitting to the music video.
With that being said there isn't much professional lighting throughout this music
video it Seems to me there's normal lighting that you would have in your house in the
music video which can make this music video more home like which I think that was
the message or the theme the BTS was trying to show in this music video even with
the outfits they are very casual jeans, cardigans, a T-shirt and etc. It is very casual
which makes it more relatable to the audience as you watch it.
3. Existing Product
A second existing product that I take influences from is the One Direction Night Changes
music video as it has the type of shots I would like to have in my music video. the camera
shot that we see throughout the music video is from the point of view of One Direction
significant other as this type of shot makes the music video more relatable Or you're actually
in the shoes of the significant other but One Direction are showing their affection too. This
shot is what I plan to have in my music video but in my music video as it will be shots of the
two best friends hanging out with each other but from each others point of view of how
they see each other. And similarity that I see with the existing first product and with this one
is the outfits Very standard outfits they're not too extravagant they're just typical outfits
you'd see a normal person wear and in every change of member the scenario, the location
changes, the theme also changes and lighting changes but it still is very relatable to watch as
you're looking from the One Directions significant others point of view.
Throughout the scenes all scenarios with each direction member something horrible happens that would ruin
the day or make the day uncomfortable for the significant other point of view. Which again gives it its relatability
that the audience would like to watch or to continue watching the music video through. put to those horrible
situations there is a funny connotation to it of how the members react or the event ends up being. In one
instinct Liam pain goes on a ride with his significant other and he's starting to feel sick then after the ride he
starts to show the emotion of gagging which was a funny connotation to the event but could have been a
horrible thing if it was dealt with in real life and as Ive stated previously that it gives a lot of relatability to the
music video
4. Existing Product
The last existing product that inspiration from is Olivia Rodrigo
second single déjà vu. The colour scheme of this music video has
a lot light blues which everything look brighter, in one of scenes
she is in a pool but it painted with white clouds very interesting
location to use but simplistic but in those same there is VHS
rewind effect used in this which this could be a potential effects
I could use in my music video. The outfits throughout the music
video are comfortable not dramatic aside from the beautiful
green Olivia and actress wear in the music video. And I also
noticed with the location it does change quite and there is story
line throughout the music video too but that not really fitting to
my music video.
5. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
- I have noticed that all the music videos have a relatable and
normal concept throughout the music videos but shown in
different ways.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on
work?
– I will take The concept aspect of all three music videos
into my planning out the plot of the music video.
7. SURVEY PLANNING/RESULTS
- I have formed a Microsoft Form that I posted on my personal Instagram for people to fill out
and get an overall perspective of my initial target audience that is 16 to early 20s of what
they like in music videos or ask in general do they watch music videos and if they do what
makes a music video appealing to them as a viewer.
- Overall I got 10 responses to my survey as that is just enough for me to make overall judgement
of what kind of music
The first question was asking about age, I
had to ask how old my audience is who are
taking the survey to confirm or either
change my target audience to my music
video and in result my initial target
audience is very fitting to the results that I
see right here my target audience was 16
two early 20s and I got the results of pop
everyone being in the late teen years
almost 20 which is a good start to the
survey.
8. Audience research
- With the second question there is conflicting opinions
but there isn't overall answer To this question of how
often do people watch music videos. I asked this question
to get an idea of how often people watch music videos as
time has gone on music videos I feel in my opinion are not
taken as seriously as they used to be so asking this
question would give me an overall idea as to even making
the music video for my fmp the right option.
- The third question I asked what their favourite music
genre was just to see if the song choice for the fmp is
suitable to the target audience With the results showing
here there is conflicting answers which I think I needed to
make this question of multiple choice question with
different genres listed and ask the audience to decide
which one they like the most out of the list instead of a
writing out type of question is the evidence show about
asking people to write out that question can lead to
Conflicting answers as shown.
For all with these questions my product may appeal
to most of the target audience as age wise as time
wise but genre wise is conflicting it maybe half and
half.
9. Audience research
The fourth question I asked in the survey was ‘what makes a music
video interesting to you’. I think that's an important question to
ask my target audience this the type of question so I have an idea
of what I should include in my own product so that it meets then
target audience that I am trying to present my project to. And with
this question there's an overall theme of colour. Seeing that my
target audience like to have colourful or want to see colour in the
music video I have to bare that in mind and think about what kind
of colours I would want to put in my music video and it has made
me realise that I need to keep the constant thought of making my
music video colourful while I am editing in my production stage of
the FMP.
The first question I asked how long should I music video last an I
got an overall answer of two to three minutes with one person
voting for three to four minutes which in my case for my music
video the song the song choice is not very fitting to the overall
answer to this the survey. As this could be a weakness in my
project as the Song choice lasts about a minute and a quarter this
could lead to my audience not really liking of house shorts the
music video lasts.
10. Audience research
- Six question I ask in the survey is what are things that you
would like to do if there wasn't a pandemic going on and I
ask this question to get an idea the type of scenes that I
plan to have in my music video are fitting to the target
audience. Overall I got a common answer of hanging out
with friends which makes me confident that my product in
my music video will appeal to the audience because the
whole plot of my music video is about events of two friends
living the life if there wasn't a pandemic as they've moved
on from high school and are now in college.
Question 7, I ask in your opinion to rate how badly the
pandemic has affected your life from one being not at all
and 9 being completely and in results I got high numbers
and only 1 number below the average of 6 or 7. I ask this
question because I wanted to know how badly my target
audience have been affected by the pandemic as I am a
fellow teenager myself it has affected my social life and
my life in general so I wanted to see if that was a common
emotion that everyone was feeling and with my music
video this could bring light into the situation that we're
currently facing and it will most likely appeal to the
audience of how life could be like without the pandemic
11. Audience research
Question eight I ask do you like when music
videos have graphic or effects on the music
videos, the overall answer was yes but not too
much and there was a few of the results that said
yes love it. I asked this question to confirm my
idea that I didn't want to put too much graphics or
effects to the music video and this result has
confided into my idea and it will appeal to the
audience that I don't put too much effects in my
music video.
The last question I asked was do you like when music
videos have storylines the majority have said
sometimes and a few said yes which this result in
comparison to my idea is somewhat of a confirmation
that my idea is appealing to my target audience as my
music video will have events but not in order of what
life could be like for teenagers without the pandemic
as some of the survey takers said sometimes it does
give me uncertainty about if actually my music video
will be setting to the target audience.
13. Interview 1
Question 1: What do you think about music videos?”
- “ I think music video are cool way for artists to form or to show a visual aspect of songs they have
released so that their fans and new audiences are coming to watch can have an understanding of what
message they artist is trying to give through their music and music video.”
Question 2: What makes a music videos interesting to you?
- “I really like when music videos have interesting effects (graphic) to it but not too many because having
that tends to overwhelm me, Another thing that I like about music videos is having very vibrant colours
because the music video looks so much brighter and can also be captivating. But I like seeing music videos
with different types of lenses and one I see very that I like is the fisheye lens I really enjoy it because I think it
is makes the music video more distinct to the rest.”
Question 3: What makes a music video not interesting to you?
- “Having a storyline but it isn’t a clear storyline, for me personally it is very frustrating when I see music
videos there is a storyline but it either doesn’t make sense because too much is going on or they hyper
focus on something that we audience have acknowledged or have to acknowledge but the music video
doesn’t explain why that certain thing is significant.”
14. Interview 2
Question 1: What do you think about music videos?
“I think the use of music videos is a creative way to show meanings of songs from artist which I really enjoy. I
really like music videos but I will admit that I don’t watch them that frequently, I only watch them for a very
amount of artist’s music videos. I just felt like as time has gone on music videos have become generic in my
personal opinion.”
Question 2: What makes a music videos interesting to you?
“ Graphic effects and bright colours are cool for music videos that tend to intrigue me into watching a music
videos but saying that I don’t like music videos that are too bright or to have too many effects as that can too
much I would like a good balance of both. I also really like storylines, I don’t mind when storylines are
complicated I like to analyse and see the meaning to symbolism inserted by the artist in the music videos as the
symbolism has a deeper meanings to it which enjoy a lot.”
Question 3: What makes a music video not interesting to you?
“ I have dipped a little about this in the second question and yes I don’t really like when music videos don’t have
to many graphic effects being used and when then the music is too bright as you can tell where the saturation
had been increased to a thousand, I can’t stand that. Also I don’t like when music videos don’t look like good
quality, when everything is blurry in the music video and the highest quality you can go to is 480p is one of the
most annoying situations to come across when you click on a music video
15. Interview 1
- Overall this gives the ideas about my target audience know the significance of why music video are
made and how important music videos can be for music artist.
- I have been given the confirmation that I am on the right track about the plot of music video what
kind effects, camera lens being used and the bright colour grading I am planning to have in my music
video.
- This also give the prompt of how I should not have a confusing storyline to my music video as that
can give a negative reaction from the audience.
- My product will appeal to the audience as the song choice short and quick and I am not planning to
have too many different scenes in the music video, some of the scenes of the music video will be
shot be with a fish eye lens which the interviewee has expressed that enjoyed having shots like that
in music videos.
16. Interview 2
With this interview the person has big knowledge about music videos
and their significance which will beneficial as the person will know
the plot and or message of the music video. The person I interviewed
expressed about not liking music videos that were in low quality and
which makes very uninterested of watching the music video and I
have to take that in mind as my music video I want it to be in the best
quality it could be. The person also expressed their love for storylines
in music video and how it peaks interest in them as that is contrast to
the first interview I had where that person expressed that they don’t
enjoy storylines which means my product will cause mixed emotions
of reacting to my music video. As some section of my audience will
enjoy the fact there somewhat of a storyline but not a obvious one
which could frustrating.
