Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
What was the theme of your project and what
attracted you to it?
- My theme for the first project of my second-year was based the 2 weeks of research I had done for fanzines,
looking and analyzing existing fanzines and had concluded that with my own fanzine for this project would consists
of various themes throughout my fanzine as I will be talking abut different topics about the toxicity of social media,
such as cyberbullying as bullying is very different from cyberbullying as the bullying happens virtually and that kind
of bullying has been increases and continues to grow I would like to give more information and bring the light to this
topic as this is very harmful for young teenagers. That was a section of what the overall theme is of fanzine is
bringing light/ making awareness of the dangers of the use social media when not used moderately and how that
can be harmful as teenagers grow and develop into adults. My product is giving information about the social media
struggles may be faced with teenagers as they usually will not say that there is an issues, I thought my fanzine
would be a good idea to bring awareness to teenagers themselves about this issues. As a teenager myself I know
the struggles my peers will deal with social media and how ingrained social media has been apart of upcoming
generation, I thought I should make a product topics that not really addressed in detail not made aware to young
people who consume and use social media often.
What research did you undertake and how did it help
develop your project?
- The factual project research was me researching about two main topics which were already made fanzines and
social media and the negative effects it has had on young teens and adults, I needed to develop my knowledge of
fanzines and seeing how fanzines can presented in different ways. By the use of a website called issuu.com of where
people upload their digital magazines/fanzines, I mainly tried researching fanzines but ending up analyzing more
digital small magazines as some of them were quite similar and on theme to what I was planning to do for my fanzine.
I analyzed these magazines by their front cover and what aspects of the front cover I like about and how that would be
inspiration to what I was intending to make for my own fanzine. As I was analyzing these magazines, I had come to
the conclusion that my front was going the most graphically designed in a way to attract but make appealing to my
target audience as the front cover is the initial page that people will see and make the decision to continue to read on.
How did you develop and improve your
ideas throughout the project?
I initially started off with a mind map of various ideas of the fanzine of where the negative sides of social media was
one of them as other ideas such doing the dark side of K-pop and documentary about the struggles of being
independent artist and trying to get a name for yourself as a small artist. With all three ideas I slightly expanded
what topics I could address within and as I was expanded my ideas, out of the three ideas the negative side of
social media was on the idea I was able to come up various to address in the fanzine, as my fanzine was going
targeted towards teenagers and young adults which I am a teenager I will have already have an idea of how toxic
and negative social media can be. With having an initial ideas of what topic, I could address I could envision how
the fanzine would be presented, I was starting to see in the way of concept of it with wanting my fanzine theme to
be trend with what target audience would be and I very quickly decided that I was going to do fanzine about
dangers of social media.
Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
How did you feel about the project before you started?
- I initially felt excited to this project as this was going to be my first print-based project, I was really looking
forward into seeing how my ending product would come out. I was bit nervous as I didn’t focus print in my
first year by choice, as I was given project in relation to print and to critique the ending products of my print
products were not good and I was not that bothered as I was mainly focusing on film, but now in second
year I have decided to be focus print and it is quite a scary feeling in doing a different side of this course
that a little experience to, it was a frightening but exciting feeling for this project.
What do you think about your project development and how did it help you to
refine your idea?
Researching in this project was the main, essential and crucial part of this project as I was able to receive more
knowledge on the concept of fanzines and how fanzines or magazines can be designed in various ways with
being able to analyze the magazines and fanzines, that was where I got majority of my insight of fanzines and
how I was able to picture my own fanzine in the developing. Another point, being able to research about the
topics I was going to address in my fanzine and be able to find statistics and additional information about the
topics from valid sources to back up the points I was going to address in the fanzine overall, I think researching
about product design of how fanzine and magazines can be created and designed in various ways helped me
be able to gain knowledge on the variety designs and information I could explore with my own fanzine which I
think this was massive factor when it came to creating my fanzine. As time progressed and researching
fanzines on issuu I was able to envision how my fanzine would look like.
Did you collaborate on your project or engage contributors, etc?
- In this project, I had great help from a teenager who is the target audience’s age that I had
interviewed for this project as it also a requirement to have an interview in fanzine which was
something I never done before media as it was interesting experience to ask questions and receive
answers that I was not expecting. I had a 17-year-old teenager as the person to interview for my
magazine as they have been on social media at such a young age, I thought they were the best option
to be apart of fanzine as my fanzine is about the negative side of social media and asking teenager
about their experience on social media and how has affected good or bad and or both you as a person
and what changes would you make about social etc. The person I has interviewed has contributed to
my fanzine very well, their answers were well detailed to the point where I had to make a second
interview page which was good for me for my fanzine as I was going over the amount pages needed
for the fanzine and even thought I got rid one of my double pages I still had over the minimum required
for making a fanzine.
Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
What were the good points about the project/task and what did you learn from
them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
- The good points about this project, was being to develop my skills in photoshop as I spent first of media doing
film, I think this project was a good opportunity to evolve my editing skills as I watched tutorials on YouTube to
gain more skills in Adobe Photoshop with trying different affects when it came to doing experiments for transition
to production week where I will be creating my own fanzine. The experiment week was also another crucial part
of this project as it was trial and error of what I could and couldn’t do in Photoshop and improve my skills before I
started in production for this project. The experiments consisted of four but three out of four were Photoshop
related experiments and the fourth experiment was an interview experiment, the experiments photoshop were
photo and text editing one of experiments I thought it had gone well is the social media experiment although I
never used this type of effect in my actual fanzine but with this experiment I was to use the liquify tool in
Photoshop as I have never really used when I had to do a print based project in my first year so it was interesting
way ti alter text and I thought it looked really good. The second experiment was the one I really liked too as it
was another good point of this project where I had made a cool effect on a photo, and I didn’t have any issues to
it.
What challenges did you face and how did you respond to them? Try and think of at
least 3...
• The massive challenge and I think is the only challenge I had to face in the whole process of this
project was coming back to college and having some of my work being wiped of the computers as
that was a chunk of my work gone and being so far into my production period it was a difficult time to
balance out continuing with my production and having to redo my work.
How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of poor, satisfactory, good
or excellent...justify your rating] What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
I think the overall look to my fanzine would be at a satisfactory level as I don’t think it is a poor looking
fanzine, as it has elements of where it looks really well edited such my front cover as I think that is the
most appealing aspect of my fanzine but the overall pages of my fanzine, I think needed more
information as it was an informative fanzine in that criteria that was what my fanzine was lacking and I
think design wise I think I should’ve gone a little more creative with pages as this is a fanzine and
there are no rules as to how to present the fanzine I think I should have done more interesting
graphics and designs in pages, I definitely think that my fanzine could have been in the good section if
more interesting were used/made in fanzine but overall my fanzine I think meets the satisfactory level.
How did you design appeal to your target audience?
My fanzine had themes and colours very much on trend to my target as I planned my fanzine to be,
such having colours throughout fanzine like sage green in fanzine as sage green the colour is very
popular withing the target which are young teens and young adults and I think colours and themes
throughout my fanzine was an important part to appealing to the target audience as that they look
through the fanzine and the way themes and colours have been presented, it brings more attention to
theme to keep reading and will see, read and process what I have to say in my fanzine which was
important issues that needed to be addressed and or brought light to.
Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful?
My fanzine was mainly bringing awareness to social media issues that young teens and adults face
when using social media and how negative that can be for their mental health but how the negative
side of social media can affect young teens in their developing stages into adulthood, as with my
fanzine showed statistics for certain issues as catfishing, cyberbullying etc. And I think with I was able
to bring light to how many people have been affected with these types of issues when talking about
social media that have been addressed and it begs the question to how many more people that have
affected but never expressed those problems as for a while social media was very much been praised
but the unspoken actual harmful reality of what social media really is. I think I had an attempt on trying
to convey my messages on the harsh reality or serious issues of social media but there was a lack of
information for a fanzine that was about brining awareness and being informative.
What feedback did you get from your peers and viewings?
- The most common trend with receiving feedback from my peers was that all of them really enjoyed
the look of the front cover of my fanzine as it said in majority of the feedback that it was an interesting
front cover, they really liked the two purple to blue circles surrounding Avani's head and how I used
magazine letters to spell out social media. They also liked the social media written repeatedly and
placed as the background of the front cover made it look more interesting which acknowledged in all
my feedback overall, my peers had expressed that my front cover was simplistic but well present and
graphically designed where they are intrigued to see what is going on in my fanzine. Again, with all of
the feedback I got the only improvement I was given was with the ‘social media the good and bad’
double pages I could have presented the article on the pages in a more interesting way, and how I
should have more graphics onto those pages to them, the pages looked quite plain. With improvement
I got I definitely agree with that as looking and analyzing my pages those double pages are in the
weaker side of fanzine and there are reason as to why I think my fanzine meets at a satisfactory level
as I think I could have done more graphically on that such making tweets posts presenting the articles
but just in general could have used different social media templates to present my information and that
would’ve made those pages look better.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
If you were making a similar project in the future, what would you do differently?
- The main thing I would change is that remembering to save all work onto one drive and or in hard
drive so that I am not spending my production time on trying redo my work. But aside from that I think I
would change about this is that I would add more information on all pages as I look at my fanzine, I
wish I had added more information as this fanzine was supposed to be an informative fanzine, so if I
was going to make another informative fanzine that what I would do differently.
How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please identify the
appropriate resources and courses. For example, webpages, tutorials, books, short
courses and qualifications.
To develop my skills for future project is that I would my spare time and the study days of when I am
not in college is watch tutorials to enhance my editing skills for future projects as I am focusing on print
for second year as I was focusing on film last year as my editing skills in photoshop is lacking, I would
like to improve my editing skills for the next upcoming projects.
