2. 33 people answered my survey which helped finalise my ideas. This
survey has not only allowed to have an insight into my target
audience and their expectations, yet also other demographics who
have preference with other music genres. Even so, it would still be
difficult for me to entice them as they do not enjoy to listen to the
genre. I decided to share my survey through social media as this was
most accessible for anyone who I wanted to answer and anyone who
was able to. Here is what I found:
3. WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?
Even though I expected a majority of the respondents to be female,
which is beneficial anyway due to them being part of my target
audience. Some males did answer, allowing to have an insight into the
opinions of both gender.
4. WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION?
I felt it was necessary to ask the occupation of my respondents as my
target audience is specifically young High School students. A majority
of my respondents were however students, which has given me an
advantage when taking my survey into consideration.
5. WHAT IS YOUR AGE?
Again, I felt identifying the age of my respondents would allow me to
carefully look at the different responses from different age groups. The
age group of college students answered my survey most, most likely
because I asked my friends to answer, and I feel this helps because they
are similar age to my target audience.
6. DO YOU WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS?
I decided to ask this question so that I knew which responses I
could take into consideration, 30% of my respondents said that
they don’t watch Music Videos. Even though this would be a
shock to some, music videos are supposed to supplement the
lyrics and some would most likely rather to listen to the song.
Regardless, some of my respondents may have assumed that as
my survey was titled ‘Pop music video survey’ that my question
was specific to pop. I also decided to look closely at the
respondents who don’t watch music video, in order to see what
they do not enjoy about music videos.
7. DO YOU LIKE TYPICAL POP MUSIC
VIDEOS?
I then decided to ask a question specific to my music video. 40% of
respondents answered ‘no’ to whether they liked typical Pop videos, even
though we would not expect this due to Pop being the ‘popular’ genre,
over time pop has still stayed the most listened to genre, yet others have
become more recognised and listened to. Similarly to my responses, I
decided to look closely at the respondents answers who answered ’no’ to
liking pop videos.
9. When looking at the answers of this question, I was pleased
with how several of these responses can be related to my music
videos narrative. For instance, a majority of the answers argued
that a music video is a visual for the song’s lyrics, also that they
hope to see a narrative which they can engage with. Even
though I will take these answers into consideration whilst
filming, I do feel the narrative that I have created fits with the
lyrics of my music video and can be engaged with. Also,
because my target audience are young teenage females they
are more likely to engage with my narrative, as stereotypically
they can find it relatable.
11. KATY PERRY- DARK HORSE
The contents also quite
eccentric, helping it to
be recognisable and
memorable
A lot of lip-
syncing, fitting
with the pop
genre
Takes on a twist in
history to make
the music video
memorable
Arguably relatable
for pop’s target
audience
Katy’s lyrics suggest she
is no longer in a
relationship and has
become stronger from
the difficulties of
breakup.
Her music video does link
with this, highlighting her
power
12. BEYONCÉ- 7/11
Not typical to
Beyoncé nor the
Pop genre
Beyoncé normally
creates unique and
professional music
videos yet 7/11 allows
her audience to
somewhat have an
insight into her personal
life
Beyoncé's’ audience
would also most likely
find this video
memorable
The lyrics of this song
are minimal, which is
not typical to her
music, fitting with the
music video as its
quite simplistic and
therefore memorable
13. ED SHEERAN- THINKING OUT LOUD
Relatable for many
target audiences, the
video also links with
the lyrics
Especially individuals in
relationships
More of a relaxing mood,
contrasting to what we
commonly see in pop
music videos, making it
attractive for fans of
different music genres
The style of dancing
(Ballet) is also not common
to the pop genre
The video centers Ed, making him
more recognisable and giving his
target audience more incentive to
watch Thinking Out Loud
14. IN WHAT LOCATION WOULD YOU
EXCEPT TO SEE A MUSIC VIDEO?
Majority of respondents for this question answered America, a city or
Britain. I have already decided to film in Manchester, giving me
confidence that this is the right choice. I really wish to connote City
life in my music video as I feel a younger audience find this attractive.
15. WHAT MAKES A MUSIC VIDEO GOOD TO
YOU?
The responses of this question were mixed. A lot of answers were that
they hope the song’s lyrics fit with the music video and that the
narrative is engaging, which I have found to be a common response in
this survey. From completing this survey, I do feel confident about my
created narrative, I must ensure I take the responses of this survey into
consideration when filming and editing.
