Music Video survey analysis
Q1: What is your gender?

In order to gain a basic
understanding of my audience, I
needed to know the gender of
the person filling out the survey.
The graph shows that more
males participated in the survey.
However, I already had an idea of
what I would like my music video
to contain and I feel it would be
better suited to a female target
audience.
Q2: How old are you?

Most people who answered my
questionnaire are between the
ages of 15 and 17. Therefore I
will aim my music video at this
age group because I have
gathered most information from
people pertaining to this age.
Q3: What is your working status?
As most people who answered
my questionnaire are between
the ages of 15 and 17, the
majority of them are in full time
education. A small minority
(15%) of these also work part
time jobs at the out of school
hours. I have already decided
that the age group I will aim my
music video at are going to be
between 15 and 17, and this
question has revealed that most
of these will be in full time
education. I have also learnt from
this that people are likely to
watch music videos after school
or on weekends.
Q4: What is your favourite genre of music?

This question enabled me to find
out whether my target audience
is mass or niche. The music video
I have chosen is in the genre of
rock, therefore I am aiming the
video at a mass audience. This
would help the video’s success
because most people in my
target audience would watch it.
Q5: What type of music video do you like the best?

In this question I had to specify
what performance, concept, and
narrative music videos are due to
the fact some people may not
know what they are. The results
have shown that nobody who
filled out the survey want to
watch a concept video; therefore
I will stay away from this because
I want to please my target
audience. I would like my video
to tell a story (narrative) so as to
keep viewers watching to find
out what happens in the end.
Q6: On which platform do you prefer to watch music videos?

This question shows I will aim my
product at Audience 2.0. The
results show that most people
watch music videos on their
computer.
The anomaly is someone who
selected ‘Other’ and said ‘all’ –
the question may have been
misread as it asks the person
filling out the survey to select the
option they prefer to watch
music videos on.
Q7: How often do you watch music videos?

The results of this question show
that most people watch music
videos 1-5 times a week.
Q8: What do you think about the idea of combining my music video
and ancillary products with elements of a film genre?

I already had the idea of combining my
video with elements of a film genre, but I
needed to be sure of what my target
audience would want. The results show
that most people think the idea could
work or that it’s a good idea. I will
definitely stick to this idea because no
one said it wouldn’t work.
Q9: What film genre do you think will fit best with a rock music
video?

With the idea from the previous question
in mind, I wanted to know what film
genre my audience thinks will fit best
with my rock music video. The most
popular answer was action, and the
second most popular was horror. Already
knowing what music I was using, I think
horror would be best suited to it. I also
think it will fit better with the band’s
visual style.
Q10: Why do you watch music videos?

I think this is one of the most
important questions in my survey.
In order to know what I want to
include in the video, I wanted to
know what the audience’s
reaction might be. The most
popular answer was to be
entertained, and therefore I must
keep my audience hooked
throughout the video.
Conclusion
From this survey I have found out that my target audience will be between the ages of 15
and 17. I will aim more towards a female market because I feel the initial ideas I have will
be more suited towards them. They will all be in full time education, whether that is at a
school or college, and may be working a part time job after school on weekdays and/or at
weekends. The music I am using is a rock song, conforming to most of the participants’
favourite genre. I will go against the majority of the results on the 5th question because I
want my video to follow a narrative. This way I think more people would actually watch it
rather than just listen to the music. They will want to know what happens at the end of
the video so will continue to watch it until the end.
The survey showed that my idea of combining my music video and ancillary products with
elements of a film genre could be a good idea, therefore I will stick to this and think a
horror-based video would be best. This is because the results of the final question showed
that people want to be entertained when they are watching it.
