2. What kind of link do you like to
see between a music video and
the song?
This question was designed to see what kind of music
video the audience liked in general. The results show
that the majority of the recipients preferred to have a
video which represents the mood and style of the
song, this is what I had planned for my video initially
and so enables me to stick to some of the same ideas.
The other results are much less favoured by the
audience and so I will not need to take these results
into consideration as I have an obvious result to
follow.
The way I will use this in my production will be by
using colours, lighting and mise en scene that match
the mood and feel of the song, this mood will be
determined by a later question to find what kind of
style I will be representing in my video.
3. Do you prefer to see a narrative
or visual video?
The use of this question was to find out whether I
should be focusing on a narrative based video or more
of an aesthetic video. The results are a 50/50 split and
so not much can actually be gleaned from this
however it does mean that whatever option I choose
it should be well suited for the audience.
I will most likely choose a visual video since that it is
what my original idea was however if needed, I can
change the video to have a basic narrative.
A visual video would be achieved by having a variety
of shots with different compositions and styles put
together to make the video visually appealing to the
audience.
4. Do you like the characters in the
video to be the same as the
audience of the song?
From this question I was hoping to find what kind of
actor I should be using in the video. The results show
a very strong pattern favouring the actors to be the
same as the audience. From looking at the
demographic of the EDM (look at the previous post), I
can see this is a young, white male. This will probably
be the basis of choosing my actor for the video as it is
shown to be a clear idea the audience like.
The other results show that 30% don’t mind who the
actor is and so by whoever I choose for the character,
It wont bother these members of the audience. One
person said they disagree with the majority however I
think this can be ignored since that it is a too small
result to act upon.
The way I will use these results is by taking
consideration when choosing my actor/s so that they
will appeal to the audience and successfully represent
the song and dance genre.
5. What outfits do you like the
actors to wear?
By the use of this question it will show me what kind
of clothing I will need to use when planning and
shooting my production. The results show that most
of the answers are favouring plain clothes and clothes
suited to the song. I could actually use both ideas in
my final video as it will consist of many different shots
and so I could mix up different clothing styles for each
shot therefore appealing to as many people as
possible.
10% suggested using casual clothes and none decided
it doesn’t matter. Both these results are fairly
insignificant since that not enough results for these
answers were received and so I will not use these
ideas for the video.
When choosing the clothing for my video I will include
some clothing to be plain such as basic white, grey
and black t-shirts and some clothing to be
representing the EDM genre such as brightly coloured
outfits and designs since that this is the kind of
clothing that is linked with festivals and clubs.
6. What setting do you like to see
for a video?
This question was designed to find out where I should
be planning to film my video in order to start looking
for the necessary locations. The results show a variety
of spread answers, 40% said that it needs to match
the style of the song and so this means I will need to
look at what kind of locations would be best at
recreating the atmosphere and mood of the song.
Another 40% said many locations would be needed
and that they should switch between them
throughout the video, this is a common convention
that I’ve seen in other videos where there will be
many different settings that are shown from different
shots and is an effective way of stopping the video
become boring. Also there is an even split between
urban and rural locations which doesn’t give much
closure on what setting to use however of combined
with the idea of different locations, the two
contrasting settings could work well.
I can glean from this, that by using a mix of urban and
rural locations which suit the style of the song I will be
able to achieve an effective video which has a lot of
interest.
7. How would you describe the
chosen song?
In order to make sure my music video reflects the mood of the song, I
first need to find out what the mood of the song is from this question.
The results show a wide variety of moods and so I will group the
common answers for easier analysis.
”Strange but cool” & “It has some disturbing/spooky features but with
house song sounds.” – These answers suggest that the song is a mix of
common club sounds and a “Strange” mood.
“Electronic” & “Clubby” – These results show that the song has
conventional dance music aspects.
“Dark” – This answer links into one of the previous answers of being
“Disturbing”, this is quite a difficult mood to reflect but with
consideration it can be done.
“happy” & “Jazzy and Groovy.” – This shows that there is a lighter side to
the song and so helps balance out the ‘darker’ moods.
“im not sure”, “nothing” & “Doesn’t really have a mood for me” – These
results don’t show any results that could be used to plan the video
When planning the video I will need to consider all the results given. The
results that suggest the song being clubby means that I will need to
conform to certain conventions of EDM music videos. The dark and
disturbing moods means that I will need to have some abstract shots
and disorientating camera angles to reflect this vibe. The happy feeling
means that I can use some high key shots to present a lighter side to the
song.
8. If you had to choose a colour to
suit the song, which colour would
you use?
This question had two purposes, to determine a
colour scheme for the video and to give a better
description of what mood the song is showing. The
most popular colours were blue and purple, these are
colours associated with EDM music and so will fit well
for the music video. Also they are cold colours and so
supports the dark and mysterious mood from the
previous question. The yellow and orange are not as
popular but have 30% of the results and a good
contrast against the blue and purple. They give
connotations of happiness and so would provide a
good colour scheme for the high key shots.
The way I will use these colours is by selecting
clothing and props to match these colours, also by
adding filters in the editing stage and by using colour
grading I can apply these colours to tint the footage
to give it certain connotations.
9. Do you think a day shoot or a
night shoot would fit the song
better?
This question shows me what time of day I should
plan to do my filming for the music video. The
majority of the results suggest a night shoot would be
better, I will most likely follow this as the night shoot
would work well with a blue/purple tint filter however
I can still use day shoots for other shots and maybe
apply an orange/yellow filter to represent the lighter
mood of the song.
By using the night shoots I would be able to better
achieve the spooky and dark mood I am aiming for
and so I think the majority of the shots will be filmed
at night.
10. Do you find that a repetitive
video would become boring for
this song?
The aim of this question was to help me decide if I
should continue with my initial idea of a repeating
shot video or whether that idea will be too boring and
the audience will lose interest. The results suggest
that it could work as long as there is not too much
repetition occurring. This will allow me to stick with
my previous idea however I must ensure that I have a
wide variety of shots that are all different if I want this
idea to work.
I think the idea of having the exact same shot with
slight changes each repeat will most likely not work
however I could do something similar by maybe doing
the same shot but in different locations or have other
short shots inbetween the main shot.
11. After hearing the song, do you
think a narrative or video is
better suited to the song?
This question is similar to the second question
however it is more focused on the chosen song rather
than being a general question. I am glad that I
included this in the questionnaire since that the
original question didn’t produce any helpful result.
The results from this question show that a visual
video is better suited to the track and so my initial
ideas will work still. However since that 40% said they
would prefer a narrative video, I think that it would be
a good idea to include a very loose narrative. It may
only be a very weak plot but it will still keep some
interest on the video.
12. What have I learned from this questionnaire?
This questionnaire has given me a clearer idea on what I am aiming to achieve when
producing my music video in order to appeal to the target audience and maximize
the viewers. Most of the results have shown that my initial ideas are still valid to use
and provided more of a closure on what my plan is whereas the other questions
have shown me what mood and emotions I am trying to represent and convey in
the final production.
I will use these results and analysis‘s when planning, filming and editing my final
product to achieve the highest quality production I am able to produce.
