➢ Communication
➢Why we need it?
➢Oral communication
➢Verbal or non-verbal?
➢Examples
➢Types of oral communication
➢Advantages and disadvantages of oral
communication
➢Communication is A
two way interaction
between A sender and
A receiver.
➢The sender sends and
receiver receives and
the process continues
called communication.
▪ According to camp and Satterwhite (2002) we need
communication for following needs
➢OBTAINING INFORMATION BY ASKING
One can get information by
communicating with others.
➢TO INFORM & GUIDE
ONE CAN BE GUIDED BY COMMUNICATING.
➢TO INFLUENCE
ONE PERSONS COMMUNICATION SKILLS CAN INSPIRE OTHERS
TO WORK BETTER.
➢TO DEVELOP BETTER RELATIONSHIPS.
COMMUNICATIONENABLES BETTER UNDERSTANDING
BETWEEN PEOPLE. E.g.in Business, family, public relations and
all other such terms.
VERBAL OR NON-VERBAL?
Oral communication is basically a kind of verbal
communication but non-verbal communication using
body language where feelings are expressed through
facial expressions, gestures and body movements often
goes hand in hand with oral communication especially
during face-to-face interactions which include:
Appearance
Posture
Eye contact
Nervousness
Dressing
▪ It is a communication via spoken language and
expression of ideas and sharing information orally.
➢Face to Face conversation.
➢Meetings
➢Voice Mail ➢Telecommunication
➢Formal communication
➢In-formal communication
➢Formal communication is a kind of official
communication that we self organize.
➢It is pre-defined and systematically planned.
➢We make and follow the rules in such
communications.
➢Class room lectures, interviews etc
TYPES:
➢Upward communication
➢Downward communication
➢Horizontal communication
UPWARD COMMUNICATION
o A
Communication
From Subordinate
People Or
Workers To The
Superior Ones.
oFrom Down
Towards Up
This type of communication
is from superior ones
towards inferior ones.
E.G the MS in a Hospital
ALL other doctors in that
hospital
Nurses and patients
oA kind of formal
communication in
which the
communication is
planned between
people sitting
face to face.
oE.g.A business
meeting in an
office.
➢This type of communication can be held at any time
and any place.
➢It can be an unplanned conversation with your
friends, family and colleagues.
➢E.g. a conversation with your family at the break
fast table or with your friend in a street.
TYPES:
➢Lateral communication
➢Diagonal communication
➢Grapevine communication.
➢The communication among the people living or working at a
same level. E.g.colleagues working under same organization and
post.
➢In large
communications various
departments need
communication support
from each other.
➢This kind of
communication is under
an area where people of
different departments
or fields share
information.
➢Talking or giving feed
back about something or
any person behind its back
is called Grapevine
communication.
➢The information spreads
among all the channels of
communication either low
or high.
Formal communication
▪ Passes through predefined
channels.
▪ It is an official
communication.
▪ Due to long chain and
predefined time it
consumes a lot of time.
▪ It is a systematic form of
communication.
Informal communication
▪ Moves freely in all
directions.
▪ It is non-official
communication.
▪ It can be immediate as it
don’t needs predefined
time.
▪ Employees can discuss
work related issues which
saves a lot of time.
➢TIME SAVING
IT saves the time of writing and typing a message.
you just have to speak your idea or piece of
information you have to share.
➢MORE RELAIBLE AND FLEXIBLE
Orders and commands from the Boss can be easily
explained to the workers in time and more relaible
work can be done.
➢QUICK FEED BACK.
We can give quick feedback to any presentation or
task performed in front of you. Rather than typing
and sending it, Quick feed back will enable the
person to perform better and judge the quality of
work.
➢IT CAN INFLUENCE
OTHERS:
Motivational speeches
are definitely better
delivered orally.
Written speeches are
not such influential.
Oral speeches are
more influential.
➢NOTHING IS AUTHENTIC
As in oral
communication we
only speak orally
so nothing is
written hence
nothing authentic.
➢ In Formal Communication Messages Can Be
Distorted Due To Long Chain.
➢In Informal Communication There Is Nothing Secret
Left as Informal Communication Spreads Very
Rapidly.
➢NOTHING IS
OFFICIAL.
No documentation is
held in oral
communication
hence nothing can
be done officially.
