3. 1st Conditional
We use the 1st conditional to talk about what
could happen in a real/possible situation.
Real/possible situations (for you)
– play video games tonight
– text your friends
– do homework
– buy food
4. 1st Conditional
The 1st Conditional has two clauses -
The if clause and the will clause.
If I get home early, I will play a video game.
If he eats dinner early, he will call his parents.
• CLAUSE 1 = If + subject + present simple
• CLAUSE 2= subject + will + base verb
6. 1st Conditional
Situation: You made plans yesterday to go to the
movies with your best friend tonight (so this is a
real situation). It is now 3pm and you don't feel
well. You call your friend and say:
If I feel ill tonight, I will stay home.
If I feel okay, I will see you at the cinema.
8. 2nd Conditional
Talks about situations that are
– not real or likely to happen
– imagined or
– impossible.
For example:
Flying to Paris tonight.
Winning a million dollars.
All students getting 100% in a writing test.
9. 2nd Conditional
The second conditional also has two clauses
If I flew to Paris tonight, I would stay for a month.
could
If clause : The if clause uses the PAST simple
if + subject + past simple
The second clause uses would + the base verb
subject + would + base verb
(instead of would you can use other modal verbs in the past
form)
10. 2nd Conditional
Here are some examples of using the 2nd
conditional. They are situations that are not likely
or are impossible to happen. Can you guess
why they are not possible?
• If I were him, I would study harder.
• If everyone caught the train, the environment would be
cleaner.
• If he were taller, he could play basketball.
• If I won a billion dollars, I might buy a plane.
11. 2nd Conditional
In a group, try and think of any situations that
would require the use of a 2nd conditional.
Try writing some of your own 2nd conditionals.
Now write some 1st conditionals for a review.
13. Your friend is getting ready to go
on a date and you think they look
terrible. Would you tell them?
14. You are driving late at night.
Nobody is around and you hit a
dog with your car. Would you
stop and check the dog?
15. You are asked on a date by
someone who is incredibly good-
looking and rich, but VERY
stupid. Would you accept?
16. You have the opportunity to find
out the exact time, date and
manner of your death. Would you
want to know?
17. You are offered $1,000,000 but
you have to lose one of your
senses (sight, smell, hearing,
touch, taste). Would you accept?
18. If you found the answers for the
final exam at university, would
you share them with you
classmates?
19. If in one day you could speak
English perfectly but you would

21. If you had the opportunity to
spend one day as a member of
the opposite sex, would you take
it?
22. If your best friend’s partner is

you tell your friend?
23. If you had to choose…
I would prefer to live in a modern
flat, BECAUSE if I lived in an old
flat, I’d need to repair a lot of things
and it would cost a lot of money.
