We can often say things in two ways:
Active : Many Koreans eat kimchi.
(Here the focus (the subject) is the person.
Passive: Kimchi is eaten by many Koreans.
The focus (subject) is on the object not the
person
Passive (present simple)
We can use the passive when
1) we don't know who does the action or its not
important who does the action.
Notice that the object of the active sentence
becomes the subject of the passive sentence
Active: They make big donuts here.
Passive: Big donuts are made here.
2) When who or what causes the action is obvious.
Active: Scientists predict worse weather.
Passive: Worse weather is predicted.
Making the Present simple Passive
Uranium is used to make nuclear power.
English is taught every day.
BE verb + past participle
is used
is taught
Using BY in passives formation
We can use BY if we want to put the doer
(i.e. who does the action) in.
Worse weather is predicted by scientists.
Computers are fixed by Thomas.
Delicious donuts are made by that bakery.
